Yellow gold paired with pearls is considered by many to be far more striking than silver, platinum or white gold. hen you hear the phrase “colour your world”, you probably think of a multitude of shades, especially when choosing a watch!

This makes it difficult to choose a timepiece that reflects your personality. There’s one colour, though, that goes with everything – black. A black watch is a real eye-catcher on the wrist right now and is likely to endure. It gives the right depth to many outfits and can be worn with almost anything in your wardrobe. Whether it’s a reliable choice to fall back on or because it’s the quintessence of elegance, black is always a good option. And the same is true in the watch industry: a black watch always works and blends easily into any outfit,” says watchmaster Ivo Stromsik. Your own design: If you have a creative eye, this can be a great way of making a piece truly unique. It could be a symbol with which you’re associated, an ornate monogram or a doodle of something the recipient values as much as you do. Our final piece of advice is to keep it short, sweet and simple. Depending on the size of the piece of jewellery, space for engraving will likely be limited, so try to avoid going for an intricate design or an entire song being engraved on the inside of a ring! It may look great on screen, but when scaled down to a workable size, it will probably be illegible and look cramped.

CONNECT WORDS BY SMITHA SADANANDAN

These rings rock! Founders Nina Dzhokhadze and Natia Chkhartishvili of NeverNoT have brought out a capsule line of rings inspired by their trip to Las Vegas and touring the Seven Magic Mountains in the Nevada Desert. “Public art is redefining the identities of places around the world and Seven Magic Mountains was seen as a place that celebrates and supports the work of interesting artists, while also drawing attention to Las Vegas as a city evolving into a keeper of the arts. The art inspires the design of the stone rings, which resemble the rocks in the Seven Magic Mountains,” says Dzhokhadze. The Show N Tell Stone series celebrates the brand’s aesthetic – big, bold, colourful and daring. “The enamel technique is almost transparent and gives the form a lot more depth. We've used coloured gemstones like amethyst, topaz and citrine to add a pop of colour and lend contrast to the rings,” explains Dzhokhadze. The designer duo will be adding more colourways soon with at least seven colourful options to choose from. “These rings are all limited-edition and, at the moment, exclusive to the Threadstyling platform.” The stone rings launched last month will be available on the brand’s website by the end of January.

Zodiac memories Zodiacs have been a meaningful part of Briony Raymond’s collection since the fine jewellery designer launched her signature medallions in April 2019. The offering has since been expanded to include signet rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and now the Memoir Zodiac lockets. “While zodiacs are inherently personal, the new locket makes for an entirely one-of-a-kind jewel with the incorporation of birthstones and treasured photographs,” says Raymond. All the zodiac pieces, including the lockets, incorporate botanical elements into classic zodiac motifs as an ode to the “delicate balance between the grounding presence of earth and the other-worldliness of astrology.” The birthstones that the designer incorporates into the lockets are a way to “further personalise each piece”.

Cocktail dour Here are some gorgeous cocktail rings that pack quite a colourful punch. Perfect for 2022, these statement rings are from Arman Sarkisyan, Colette, Emily P Wheeler and Nak Armstrong.

Wavy bands Jesse Marlo Lazowski’s new wave bands for her fine jewellery brand, Marlo Laz, include an array of stackable rings. “The wave shape of the ring is inspired by the Japanese pattern known as seigaiha and reflects the duality of tranquillity and power thus the bands stack like a perfect yin and yang,” says the creative director/designer. The bands, available in several widths, can be customised with birthstones or the wearer’s zodiac sign, either with a bezel band or surrounded by hand-painted enamel.

Graceful design Grace Lee’s signature clean silhouettes transform the new Helix collection into chic wearables. Particularly eye-catching are her Helix ring in well-crafted coil forms. “The Helix rings was created as one of our "one"-ring options when brides wanted one ring instead of the traditional engagement ring and wedding band combination,” says the Los Angeles-based jewellery designer. The Helix rings are available in gold versions as well as stone variations, including single large diamonds, multiple diamonds and pieces set with coloured gemstones like emeralds and sapphires.

Artful allure British designer Liv Luttrell has launched the newest editions of her work, comprising four sculptural silver rings that celebrate the ancient process of lost wax carving. The rings have been crafted in collaboration between Luttrell and her goldsmith. Each ring has been made using the traditional process of wax carving by hand and cast into responsibly sourced silver with a mixed high-polish and brushed finish. The rings are celebrations of shape and

For the love of vintage cars Brazilian jeweller Ara Vartanian’s latest Biela collection is inspired by his love of cars and aptly named Biela, meaning “connecting rod” in Portuguese. Throughout the design process, Vartanian – a vintage car collector – sought inspiration from the intricate internal parts found in car motors. He often finds similarities between the mechanical elements and the jewels once the pieces are finished. The fan earrings from Biela reference the shape of a car’s radiator and mirror the designer’s novel design approach. Sustainability and social responsibility are of the utmost importance to the brand’s ethos and mission. The emeralds, rubellites and Paraiba tourmalines used in the Biela collection are therefore sourced from Conscious Mining mines – an initiative started by the designer which identifies mines that uphold the highest standards of environmental and social practices.

Rainbow hues British jeweller Pippa Small’s bright new offerings, entitled Earth’s Rainbow, are crafted using multi-coloured gemstones gathered from all corners of the globe. Small seeks inspiration from one of the most natural forms and rediscovers the profound impact that colour has on the human psyche. Single-stone rings, cord necklaces and earrings – handmade in India – are set with small, tumbled rainbow-coloured stones such as aquamarine, flame orange hessonite, pink tourmaline, spring green tourmaline, lemon quartz, African amethyst, tanzanite and apatite. The gemstones are set among warm gold in snug drop earrings, long cords, pendant clusters, stud earrings, vibrant beaded necklaces and Greek rings.

Combining soul and style Ghanaian-born independent jeweller Emefa Cole’s Heritage-Afrika series consists of four dynamic pieces that embody the nature of breathing new life into old objects in stunning ranges of colours, tones and textures. The “Broken Calabash” ring, a hero piece from the collection, resembles a traditional African calabash made from gourds. Well-used, loved and broken calabashes are often repaired to create an even more beautiful vessel with abundant character. This way of breathing new life into old objects has inspired Cole's black rhodium-plated silver vessel ring, which has

An enchanting collection Emerging fine jeweller Kaltham Al Majid founded her brand, Kaltham’s Pavilion, in 2018 with the desire of representing “Qatari culture and values in an elegant way by incorporating tradition, culture and nature” in her creations. Her newest line, Enchanted Garden, finds its inspiration in two beautiful creatures – butterflies and fireflies. “I find fireflies really magical, especially the way they light up the area with their glow. As for butterflies, they're beautiful, colourful and come in all shapes and sizes. So I designed pieces inspired by the butterfly in many forms and colours,” says the Doha-based designer.

The 20-piece line, featuring rings, necklaces, earrings and bangle bracelets, is accented in gemstones such as tanzanite, emeralds, pink sapphire and blue sapphires. “I love these colour combinations; they're very much inspired by the garden, seen both at night and in the morning. In each collection I employ signature cuts; the key gemstone cuts include pears and round brilliants,” adds Al Majid, whose pieces are primarily made in Hong Kong.
