VOLKSWAGEN T-CROSS COMING TO SOUTH AFRICA IN 2019 In the second half of the year, Volkswagen will introduce its first compact SUV to the model line-up. The T-Cross will join the Tiguan and Touareg in the Volkswagen SUV model range and advance the company’s offensive strategy in the growing SUV segment. In 2018, the compact SUV segment consituted 8.7% of the total market. Where most segments have shrunk, the compact SUV segment grew year-on-year from 2014 to 2018. In 2014, the segment accounted for 19 027 of new vehicle sales, whilst in 2018, the sales volume increased to 31 982 units, which equates to a 68% growth. This is one of the many reasons that attracted Volkswagen in the segment. The T-Cross is based on the same MQB platform as the new Polo. The T-Cross slots into the Volkswagen product portfolio under the Tiguan. The vehicle is 4 237mm long, boasts a wheelbase of 2 551mm and is 1 584mm metres high. While it is a compact SUV, the T-Cross is practical with 377 litres of boot space. This can be expanded to 455 litres if the second row of seats is moved forward. By folding the rear seats flat, the carrying capacity is increased to 1 281 litres.

A host of standard as well as optional driver assistance features will be available in the T-Cross. The T-Cross will be available with optional LED headlightswith wheel sizes of up to 18 inches. The interior of the T-Cross is similar to that of the new Polo and will be offered with optional Active Info Display. Volkswagen’s compact SUV is a great value for money; the starting price of the T-Cross will be below R300 000.

The T-Cross will be available for preorders from the second half of the year and will officially be launched into the South African market towards the end of the year. As from 2020, Volkswagen will add another SUV model in the line-up for the South African market. The premium, sporty and stylish T-Roc, which is the first Volkswagen SUV that is available to order in two-tone paintwork, will make its way into the local market next year.

MAHINDRA LAUNCHES NEW XUV300 spec to the local compact SUV segment. “At Mahindra, our driving purpose is ‘Rise’, which we interpret as the way we challenge conventional thinking and innovatively use our resources to drive positive change in the lives of our stakeholders and communities across the world. “The XUV300 is the latest product of that philosophy and combines fresh thinking and our best engineering and design talent. We are very excited to see how our new compact SUV will not only wow customers in our second home - South Africa - but will allow them to Rise!” says Mr Arvind Mathew - Chief of International Operations Mahindra & Mahindra has entered the next phase of its evolution with the launch of the bold and dynamic Mahindra XUV300. Built on the group’s global X100 platform, the XUV300 (pronounced-

XUV-three-double-O) carries its larger sibling’s cheetah-inspired design language into a new generation of vehicles. It also introduces a new range of engines and an unmatched level of

Mahindra Ltd. South Africa is the first international market outside of India to launch the XUV300, which lands here with both petrol and diesel drive-trains and the choice of a W6 or W8 trim level.

NEW FORD EVEREST DELIVERS ENHANCED DESIGN, COMFORT AND PERFORMANCE

Ford is making its sophisticated Everest seven-seater sport utility vehicle (SUV) more appealing and upmarket than ever with a range of styling, suspension and feature upgrades, complemented by the introduction of the advanced new 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo and Single Turbo engines that recently debuted on the New Ford Ranger. As Ford’s premium offering in the rapidly growing SUV market, the New Everest puts the emphasis on quality, refinement and luxury matched to exceptional space and practicality. “The Everest has given Ford an important foothold in the SUV segment which continues to grow in South Africa and around the world as buyers opt for versatile, family-oriented vehicles that suit their active lifestyles,” says Doreen Mashinini, General Manager Marketing at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa. “With the New Everest, we have raised the game further by introducing subtle yet effective styling updates for the eyecatching exterior, providing a more refined and luxurious cabin environment, adding several new trend-setting technologies to the already feature-packed range, and building on the outgoing model’s superb

comfort and ride refinement with a revised suspension set-up. “As with the New Ranger, we are delighted to introduce the new-generation 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo and Single Turbo engines to the Everest range, paired with the advanced new 10-speed automatic transmission - a combination that sets new benchmarks for performance and efficiency in this segment.” The existing 2.2 and 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engines continue to do duty in certain models, paired with the current six-speed automatic transmission.

SANDERO’S REFRESHED DESIGN EMPHASIZES EXCLUSIVITY & CAPABILITY The modern and refined RENAULT SANDERO range has become synonymous with a host of features and fitments exclusive to its class. Powered by a Turbo engine, the Sandero boasts a host of safety features as well as smart technologies as standard across the range. Locally produced, the affordable newcomer was in tune with customer needs and market trends. Introducing its Sandero range, Renault promised a package that would meet the need for affordable motoring and outright value in a tense economic climate. Since its inception in 2009, the Sandero has evolved dramatically with numerous quality, feature and styling enhancements. With its fresh line-up, the Sandero has continued to enjoy ever-increasing success; recording sales of over 58,000 units to date, representing the lion’s share of the PC market (YTD being 27%). In celebration of its success, Renault South Africa is proud to introduce the new enhanced Sandero Stepway PLUS, to replace the current flagship model. It promises delivery against the ever-popular Stepway genetics PLUS more. Introducing this Sandero range maintains the same construct; Sandero Expression remains the entry level model, followed by a mid-level Stepway Expression derivative, with the New Stepway PLUS leading the line-up as the flagship model.

4 PRETORIA OLD MOTOR CLUB

The first main event on the Pretoria Old Motor Club’s 2019 calendar took place on Sunday the 10th of March when the annual American day was held. A wide variety of American cars was on display, with a few that drew a lot of attention. One of the most beautiful cars was a 1964 Ford Thunderbird, owned by Mario Coetzee. This car has a lot of unique features, like a steering column that moves from left to right to make it easier to enter or exit the car. Its foot-operated parking brake is also automatically released whenever the car is started. The car is completely original and is fitted with the same 390 cubic inch (6,4 litre) V8 engine as the contemporary Galaxie. Another exceptional feature is the beautifully crafted ignition key featuring the contemporary American Ford badge in three colours. This is the type of attention to detail that makes this car special. Its (Right): Chevrolet Bel-Air: Jamie Douglas’s 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air looks original but has had a 350 cubic inch V8 engine fitted to it.

aerodynamic, almost futuristic styling is another outstanding feature. Another beautiful Thunderbird was one of two cars owned by long-term Ford enthusiast Albert Etsebeth. His car is a 1956 model, one of the original versions. This car was imported from the United States of America after its bodywork, chassis and upholstery were restored; Albert restored its mechanical components. The second car Albert displayed, was a 1953 Ford Crestline Sunliner. The Sunliner was the convertible version of the Crestline and this car, which has a side-valve engine of 3,5 litres, is totally original. The Ford Mustang was the most instantly successful car in history, but because it was only made in left hand drive until recently, only a few of the original versions made it to South Africa and it was never officially marketed here until three years ago. Nevertheless, two were on display. The differences between the 1965 and 1966 models were very apparent because one of each was on display. Lucius Ford has owned an immaculate 1965 Fastback

with the 289 cubic inch (4,8 litre) V8 engine and an automatic transmission for about twenty years. A distinctive feature of this car is its Rally Pack instrumentation, which includes a rev counter and is mounted under the strip speedometer. Although the car is in an original condition and is fitted with contemporary extras like hubcaps with spinners and air conditioning, a new radiator, imported from the USA, has been fitted, along with stainless steel wiper arms. The other original Mustang was a 1966 convertible that could not be more different. The six-cylinder engine was not as much in demand as the V8’s, and the same could be said about the three-speed manual transmission with a floor gear lever than this car came with. There is a different radiator grille from that of the 1965 model and a new feature introduced for 1966 was a new instrument panel with round dials. One car that drew a lot of attention was Seth Phalatse’s heavily modified 1960 Chevrolet Impala four-door hardtop that was manufactured in Port Elizabeth. The bodywork is original but just about nothing else is. It has been fitted with a 383 cubic inch (6,3 litre) engine with Edelbrock tappet covers and a Holley four-barrel carburettor. A very interesting feature is its Evans Waterless Coolant system, which does without water cooling. Seth also fitted rims with 100 spokes each and he admits that these are not very easy to clean. The most modern exterior (Above, left): The four-door Studebaker Lark was a popular car in South Africa but the two-door model, like this one owned by Dietlov Börner, is extremely rare. (Left, from left): Lucious Ford has had his immaculate Ford Mustang Fastback for twenty years; Mario Coetzee’s 1964 Ford Thunderbird’s aerodynamic styling could have been considered futuristic; Seth Phalatse spent nine years restoring his 1960 Chevrolet Impala.

(Above): Albert Etsebeth’s 1956 Ford Thunderbird had its bodywork and interior restored before it was imported to South Africa. (Below): The Ford Crestline Sunliner was the convertible version of the Ford Crestline; Albert Etsebeth’s car was built in 1953.

modification is LED/xenon headlamps, which fit into the headlamp bezels. Some interesting features in the interior are climate control and alloy pedals. The restoration project started in 2006 and the car was ready in 2015. Another Chevrolet that was manufactured in Port Elizabeth, but which is extremely rare nowadays is the 1953 Bel-Air. Jamie Douglas owns one of these models, and he has fitted the 350 cubic inch (5,7 litre) engine from the De Ville and the Turbo Hydramatic automatic transmission that model came with. Jamie has all the original documentation, including its owner’s manual. The upholstery is original, but the bodywork has been resprayed. One of the American manufacturers that did not survive, was Studebaker, yet many of them are still running and the owner’s club is extremely active. Besides a very rare model, a 1958 Commander coupé, two Larks were on display. The four-door model was quite popular until it was replaced by the Daytona, the last Studebaker to be introduced. However, the model that drew a lot of attention because of its rarity was Detlev Börner’s 1961 Lark VIII two-door. The next event on the Pretoria Old Motor Club calendar is the Vintage and Veteran car and bike day on the 14th of April.

8 RENAULT CLUB ZA

Story by late André Dippenaar The Rand Renault Club evolved out of the old Johannesburg Renault Club in the late 70’s. I joined them in 1975 and had good times in the beginning but soon the membership started to dwindle and I realized that the club will not last much longer. I got a few existing members together and decided to revive the club in 1977. I also suggested renaming the club to “RAND RENAULT CLUB” so that not only people from Johannesburg could be members but also people from the whole Rand were welcome. Soon membership grew to over 20 members and we also came up with better venues for meetings and outings to make it more family orientated. We changed the T-shirts to Rand Renault Club but kept the iconic R8 Gordini on the front and we also put the latest logo on the back of the T-shirt because of newer members to also feel part of the club although some did not own an “old” Renault. We also got Renault SA involved and were invited to attend the 1978 South African Grand Prix to see the new Renaults in action. We also started to hold functions

RAND RENAULT CLUB HISTORY such as dinner and dances, “concourse D elegance” and family picnics. People started to notice and also invited to show our cars at events around the Rand. (Hotrods, car shows, etc.) Two innovative members designed a banner to put up at events and I noticed that it still in use. (It was made by Jack and Linda Louw). I also represented the RRC in France in 1980 where we were given a tour of the R5 and R18 assembly plant by the CEO of Renault in Africa which included a lunch at a chattau outside Paris nog al. We were then given his chauveur and his R30 TS for the rest of the day! We also attended the French Grand Prix at Paul Richard with sponsored Entrance and Grandstand tickets. Sadly Renault didn’t win that day… Two events that stands out during the time that I was a member was a Durban Dash we did as a club and meeting up with the Durban crowd. Being the time where petrol was not available on weekends, we

were lucky that one of our Renault friends, Hennie Verwey, owned a service station appropriately named “Gordini Motors” and he filled us up for the return trip. The second event that stood out was a long weekend at Van Reenen where most of the Renault clubs was in attendance. It was a blast we played games did a gymkhana and we did had a few pints because washing the cars was a big job… Rand Renault Club 1983 – 2005 As told by Colin Black: “I think it was either June or July in 1983 when I called Koos van Dyk, the then chairman of the Rand Renault Club and asked him about joining the club and how I should go about the process, what application forms to fill in, etc. I had just acquired a 1962 Renault Dauphine which I intended to restore and felt that joining the club would be appropriate. I was surprised to be invited to

RENAULT CLUB ZA 9

Koos’s home in Roodepoort and who would then explain the process. I was further surprised when i arrived that evening to be met by Koos, Jannie van Rooyen, André Dippenaar and Jack Louw. Anyway as it transpired that evening I was asked if I would like to take over the running and administration of the club as it was at that stage only existing in name. I agreed as I always believed (and still do) that there had to be a home for enthusiasts of classic Renaults. I then set about organising a venue (the President Hotel) in Johannesburg to have an inaugural meeting to be attended by interested people. I placed an invitation in local newspapers and personally call all of the contacts from the existing club to invite them and see if i could get some renewed interest going. I also wrote a draft

SINCE 1975

constitution in the meantime to present to the attendees at the inaugural meeting and elect an interim chairman and committee on the “new” Rand Renault Club. This meeting was held on the 4th Thursday in September 1983. I was duly elected as chairman with Albert Louw and Ogies van Rensburg nominated as committee members. Renault Club ZA 2005 In 2005 it was decided to rename the club once again to Renault Club ZA to include members from all over the country and make it easier to get hold of the club on the internet. Western Cape still operates their own club known as the WP Renault Club who is still very active and share their website with the Renault Club ZA. Visit www.renaultclub.co.za to see more on club events. Forty four years later the club is still in existence and is a member of SAMCA(South African Motor Club Association). The Club has enjoyed leadership under various chairmen. The current chairman is Marius Marais and continues to embrace the vision of

ensuring that the classic Renaults grace the South African roads for the future generations to enjoy! Renault Africa’s Relations Renault Africa arranged a evening at a drive-in in Pretoria, booked the whole place for Renaults only. They went on to screen Renault’s 1st win on home soil (1982). Good events like that made being a member of motoring club assisted by manufacturer such an enjoyable experience and staying a member.

Special gratitude to André and Colin for saving our Club In loving memory of André Dippenaar who lost his battle with cancer in 2016 Chairman, Vice chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, editor, etc.. 1977-1983 Any old members please contact Marius Marais on 082 563 8807 if you have more stories to add to the club history.

RANDELLS RANCH

(…wys jou net ‘n Ford Capri is ‘n staatmaker-kar).

12 BENONI HERITAGE VEHICLE & ENGINE CLUB

2018 HERITAGE DAY AND NATIONAL DRIVE IT DAY Drive to where? Drive to your local Museum. Heritage Day was declared for 24 September of each year in the new South Africa. That included that all museums should be open on that day. The Heidelberg Motor Museum at that time opened on Heritage Day with the Friends of the Museum being involved as tour guides and drivers of the museum cars taking visitors on short trips. Soon Heritage Day was also made into a SAVVA National Drive It Day. This was to display your historic vehicle to the public by driving it on the road on that day. The Friends of HMM would drive their historic vehicles to the museum and park them in a display area for the visiting public to see. This went on very well for many years till 2004 when the museum finally closed. The James Hall Museum of Transport was also hosting a similar event as HMM

on Heritage Day. Myself and some other members of the Historic Transport Association would drive to JHMT on the day with our historic vehicles and park them in the grounds. We would also act as tour guides to the visiting public. This year members of Benoni Heritage Vehicle & Engine Club asked member Shawn Tyler to have the Shawn Tyler Transport Museum open on Heritage Day. The Museum was open and some

motor clubs were invited to take part. The museum was not open to the general public. About six motor clubs took part and members parked their historic vehicles in a display area next to the museum hall. Visitors could view the museum exhibits plus the cars on display. Lunch was in a form of a picnic lunch with a braai fire. The weather was good and the event was well attended and enjoyed by all. Next year we are planning the same event but with more motor clubs as more parking ground will be available. We hope the event grows over the coming years. Motor clubs taking part were, BHVEC, HTA, Just Wheels, MOCSA, Mental Mini, A7CSA and others.

BENONI HERITAGE VEHICLE & ENGINE CLUB 13

50 YEARS The Mercedes-Benz W114/5 came out in 1968. It is a collectable car in SA and more so in Europe. It was very much a ‘new’ design being a car with new body- and suspension design but with the same type of engines used in the previous models. The W114/5 cars replaced the W110 short body Fintail models. The W110/1 is even more collectable today. The W114/5 was replaced by the W123 in 1976 – very collectable today. The W114/5 cars had a new body design, which was more ‘boxy’. They were also called the box saloons. Although not very boxy it still had a classic look. It was also hard to distinguish between the more rounded W108 S class cars. The W114/5 came in three body styles: - The 4-Door Saloon, 2-Door Coupe and the 4-Door ‘Long’. The body was unitary, (body and chassis one piece). Only the 4-Door Saloons were assembled in SA. The others were imported from Europe or UK. The interior was very spacious - taking five people. The cars came out with a large variety of petrol and diesel engines. The W114 cars had petrol engines of 2.3L, 2.5L & 2.8L inline driving the back wheels. The 2.5L & 2.8L engines had the petrol injection option. The W115 cars had the four and five cylinder petrol or diesel inline engines. Petrol was the 2.0L, 2.2L & 2.3L SOHC four cylinder engines. Diesel was 2.0L, 2.2L,

OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ W114 & W115 SERIES

2.4L SOHC four cylinder engines & 3.0L 5 cylinder SOHC engine. The six cylinder petrol engines used was an upgrade from the original 2.2L used in 1951. The four cylinder engines used, was an upgrade from the original 1.9L used in 1956 for petrol and 1958 for diesel. The five cylinder engine was the same design with the fifth cylinder added on.

Brakes on the cars were twin circuit four wheel discs with park brake on the back wheels. Transmission was a 4-Speed manual or 4-Speed automatic gearbox driving the back wheels with a two or three piece prop shaft. All electrics were Bosch and the petrol and diesel injection was also Bosch. The four cylinder petrol engines used side draught carburetors and the six cylinder petrol engines used down draught carburetors. Steering was by manual or power assisted steering box. Air-condition units were optional on some models. The cars from 1968 to 1973 were called

series one and the cars from 1974 to 1976 were called Series 2 or facelift models. The Series 2 had a lower bonnet line with a wider grille and no quarter window on the front doors. The series two also had a new design back light cluster cover. One could not interchange front fenders, bonnet and grille between the two model series. Not all engine sizes were used in both series of cars. To get finer details, consult a detailed technical manual. The W114/5 cars in motor sport: The W114 2.8L with M110 DOHC engine petrol injection was the top of the range in performance. The six cylinder coupe and saloon cars are used today in Historic Racing and W114/5 coupe and saloon cars are used today in Historic Regularity Rallying. The cars are very much user friendly and not difficult to maintain and restore by the owner driver. Using a workshop manual is very important when working on these cars. There are many clubs and interest groups one can join. For the marque, the Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa is your best option if own or planning to own one or more of these fine cars. Club information is on the internet.

Proud & Sound Day The Proud and Sound Day is just but one of the planned activities during 2019 that was hosted on the 30th March 2019 at Krugerkroon. Dean Blackwood was the entertainer of the day to spoil our visitors and participants, 90.6 did life broadcasts on radio throughout the day and HiFi Specialists sponsored the sound measurements and provided certificates to the participants, clearly an event with some celebs that joined the fun and the support from car owners that demonstrated their commitment to take care of the legacy’s entrusted to us. The owners of the cars were interviewed and cars were judged by a group of participants that had a challenge on their hands to identify the winners amongst many beauties. Below is a summary of the winners. • Winner of the Proud – XR6, 1980 model: Owner, Johan Grobler, of this beautiful, original XR6, bought the car during 1991 and in the good old days used it as they called it, to “dice”. The car was

the 2nd car Johan bought, in those years for an astronomic R8000. During 2005 Johan decided that he’s no longer going to race with the car and start to give her TLC. What makes this car more valuable is that it is still 100% original. Asking Johan wether he will sell her, immediately, his answer was NO!! – (FOTO’s) • 2nd Proud – Comaro 1983: Owner Johan Grobler • 3rd Proud – Ford Galaxy 1967: Owner Louis Kruger (Foto) This Proud & Sound Day, was the first in its kind hosted by Krugerskroon and can

be recorded as a success, we’ve decided that it will certainly become a yearly event. The judges really had a hard time deciding which beauty is going to walk/ride away with the trophy’s.

HAVING ICE CREAM With this hot summer weather, and February being Valintine Month, us TRIUMPH folks arranged an Ice Cream Run, as a grand finale to our Valentine program for all our lovely ladies.

(Above and left): LA Venezianna Ice Cream makers originated as a family business in Belguim, but the original Ice Ceam Father moved to SA, and passed his skills onto his son, who has continued this great family bussiness. La Venezianna is situated just outside Magaliesburg, and hosted our Triumphs and POMC friends for this rather special Ice Cream run. (Above): Triumph Stag also did duty at the rather early Girls High Matric Dance, and as always was quite a hit.

LATE GREAT MOTOR ASSOCIATION 17

LATE GREAT MOTOR ASSOCIATION AT

ANGELA’S PICNIC Story by Peter Liddle

Held on April 7th, in it’s 38th year, hosted by SAMCA .The event takes place at Delta Park, Linden. As the name suggests, it’s a picnic. This is what contributes to this show being so unique. With cool and overcast weather on the day, it did not dampen spirits of all the classic car clubs and car owners from attending this event. So too did LGMA club members come out in large numbers to display their vehicles and to socialize with fellow club members and classic car enthusiasts. The turnout of classic cars did not disappoint. The variety on display was wide as the horizon. Jaguar’s Merc’s , MG’S , Ford’s , Chevy’s , muscle cars to exotics and everything in between. Even Micro cars such as a BMW Issetta was on display. This has got to be one of the top car shows held annually in Gauteng. So if you did not attend this year, diarise it for 2020. It’s usually held the first Sunday in April. To all club members who had the classics on display, THANK YOU. It truly was a enjoyable day with you all.

My motor gediens.

Daar het ek by ‘n ou Laerskoolmaat oornag. So terug 2 dae. Brandstof verbruik was 13 kilometer per liter. Groete Ernst Kleynhans LID VAN HOëVELD OU MOTOR KLUB

ALAN LANGESTRASSEN

MEMORIAL SHOW Elke tweede Saterdag in Februarie word hierdie skou in Walkerville gehou.

CHAMPIONSHIPS Late last year I received an invitation to go and participate at the Planet 32 Slot Car World Championships in Most in the Czech Republic in June, and I just couldn’t pass up on the opportunity. It is always a great way to meet new people and learn more about our hobby and how other countries go about racing slot cars. The event was held over four long days that included practise sessions, qualifying and two race classes. Both classes were run with modern day GT cars in an AM class and a PRO class. The AM class was close to standard cars with 22500rpm handout motors and a few alterations allowed, and the PRO class could be modified a lot with a maximum motor specification of 50000rpm. In general, I’m quite happy having achieved two 18th place finishes in both classes on my first ever individual world championships. I have met the most amazing people and learned a lot, and the two clubs that hosted us for the event hospitality was absolutely world class. I hope that I will be granted future opportunities to go and race again.

John van Vledder is only too happy to give people decent pictures of their cars. ohn van Vledder is always keenly active even being on pension and is always seen at Piston Ring Club taking photos of the stunning vehicles on display...

22 MIDVAAL RACEWAY

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Midvaal Race track has been in existence since the late 80s and has ever since been a go to place for the Vaal triangle and surrounding Petrol heads. It’s not only a 2.4 km circuit race track but also has a motocross track and a newly redone drag strip. The drag strip was redone 2017 with the help of some local sponsors and Petrol heads and since then plenty Horse Power was made and records broken.

MIDVAAL RACEWAY 23

Midvaal Raceway in Meyerton, South Africa saw three of the main protagonists in the 2019 Liqui Moly INEX Legends championship share the race victories during an entertaining third round. It was the youngest competitor in the field, Jagger Robertson who took the honours on the day on Saturday, March 23. This he achieved with one race victory and two further podium finishes despite having to work his way through the field. The morning’s draw for the Race 1 grid saw Justin Robertson line up in pole position from where he took a flag-to-flag win. Jagger Robertson drew 11th position from where he briskly worked his way to third place in the running order by Lap 3; where after he and Willie Erasmus engaged in an entertaining tussle for the runner-up position. The Robertsons made it a father and son one-two with Erasmus finishing in third position. Further back Sean Moore finished in fourth place while keeping Chris Hoy and Richard van Heerde behind him. This battle initially also featured Ian Upton who started in third position, but a racing incident between himself and Moore relegated him to the back of the field and a lap down. Jason Loosemore was another strong contended during the early stages of the race but retired on Lap 3 after the oil pressure on his INEX Legend started to drop. The afternoon’s second race saw Jagger Robertson starting in pole position on grid inverted from the morning’s draw. The race was however red-flagged on the opening lap following an incident between Andre Larsson and championship debutant Danielle Loosmore. Larsson spun on the exit of the right-handed sweep at the end of the long back straight; leaving him parked sideways on the racing line and in the path for Loosemore. There were however no injuries and both drivers were ready to compete in the day’s final race. Following the

JAGGER ROBERTSON VICTORIOUS AS LIQUI MOLY INEX LEGENDS ENTERTAINS MIDVAAL CROWD restart, it was Jagger Robertson who took a flag-to-flag win ahead of Erasmus. Jason Loosemore was back in running behind the wheel of a spare car which he already set up during Friday’s practice sessions. He rounded out the podium ahead of Justin Robertson. Hoy held off Johan van de Venter and Ian Upton to finish in fifth place. The afternoon’s third race saw the customary grid formation based on an inverted order of the points scored for the day. Larsson and Jason Loosemore headed up the field. Loosemore soon made his way into the lead with the rest of pack jostling for position. Erasmus emerged as the main challenger while recording a host of flying laps to eat into Loosemore’s lead. On Lap 8 Erasmus took the lead, but in the closing stages of the race Loosmore repassed him to take the victory by 0.185 of a second. Jagger Robertson again had to work his way through the field from 11th place on the grid to finish in third position; just ahead of 10th place starter Justin Robertson. Hoy completed his trio of fifth place finishes ahead of Upton. Jagger Robertson took the overall win for the day with Erasmus in second place. Justin Robertson rounded out the podium ahead of Hoy. Van de Venter’s strong form in the midfield saw him taking fifth place while Morne Roux ended the day in sixth place. Justin Robertson took the Masters Class win ahead of Van de Venter and Roux. Willie Erasmus won the Professional Class

with Hoy and Jason Loosemore as runnersup. In the Semi-Professional Class Jagger Robertson took the win ahead of Bruce Gomes and Danielle Loosemore. Justin Robertson retained the lead of the championship following the day’s racing, but now finds himself only five points clear of Erasmus. Jagger Robertson and Jason Loosemore now occupies the third and fourth places respectively. Unlike the rest of the leading quartet, Erasmus is the only one not to record a win in 2019 thus far; a testimony of his consistency at the top of the order. Moore finds himself in fifth position despite struggling with pace throughout the last two races of Round 3. Upton rounds off the top-six. Justin Robertson, Erasmus and Jagger Robertson respectively leads the Masters, Professional and Semi-Professional class-standings. INEX Legends Racing South Africa would like to thank the following partners for making the 2019 season possible: Liqui Moly, Autozone, Big Boss Auto, Rubro and Global Roofing Solutions. Round 4 of the 2019 Liqui Moly INEX Legends championship will take place at the Phakisa Freeway in Welkom, South Africa on the weekend of April 26-27.

24 ZWARTKOPS INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY - PASSION FOR SPEED 2019

FANTASTIC SPECTACLE, CLOSE RACING, A LARGE CROWD & GREAT WEATHER Written by Paul Blackburn Those are the things for which Saturday’s 18th annual Passion for Speed extravaganza at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria will be remembered. Topping the day in terms of spectacle were the two races for SKF Pre-1966 Legend V8 Saloon Cars. Race one saw Lee Thompson (Ford Galaxie) and Jeffrey Kruger (Chevelle) retire with mechanical gremlins while involved in a close dice. Meanwhile Sarel van der Merwe spun out of the lead while fighting with Hennie Groenewald (Mercury Comet). That left Groenewald to win, closely followed by Jonathan du Toit (Chev Nova), Peter Lindenberg (Shelby Mustang), Michael Stephen (Chev Belair), Michiel Campagne (Ford Galaxie), a recovered Van der Merwe and Mark du Toit (Ford Fairlane). A miffed Van der Merwe blasted through the field from the back in race two. By lap five he was disputing the lead with Groenewald. By lap seven he was ahead,

and he stayed there to win, followed by Groenewald, Jonathan du Toit, Lindenberg, Stephen, Campagne and Kruger. The day’s main event, the 45-minute Castrol race for Pre-1969 Le Mans Sports and GT cars, went to Mark and Jonathan du Toit in their Daytona Ford. They were followed by Michael Stephen and Jeff Kruger (Chevron B8), Peter/Paige Lindenberg (Shelby Daytona), Thomas Falkiner (Ford Mustang), Jan Kling (Ford GT40) and Johan de Bruyn (Porsche 911). The Index of Performance category went to Robyn Kruger/Stiaan Kriel (GSM Dart) from Falkiner and Allan Garrow (Cobra V8). Vic Campher (Volvo 122S) took the first SKF Under Two-litre race from Alfa Romeo Giulia drivers Marc Miller and Trevor Tuck. Miller won the next time around, leading Tuck and Roger Houston (Alfa Romeo Giulia). The opening SKF Little Giants race went to Chad ten Doeschate (Alfa Sprint) followed by Marco Taylor (Alfa GT Junior) and Gary Lennon (VW T34). Lennon won race two, followed by Taylor and Colin Elstrop (TVR Grantura). Larry Wilford (Lola T70) took both the Auto Truck & Tyres races for International Sports Prototypes, leading home Jonathan du Toit (Chevron B8) and Neil Lobb (Lola T70). A 32-strong grid tackled the opening race for G&H Transport Extreme Supercars. Charl Arangies won in his Aston Martin Vantage V12, leading home Gavin Cronje (McLaren 673) and Simon Murray (Lanborghini Gallardo). Cronje took the

McLaren to the second race victory, chased to the flag by Franco Scribante (Porsche 977 Turbo) and Arangies. Darron Gudmanz (Ford Capri V8) dominated the first race for Pre-1980 Saloon Cars, chased by Alan Green (Ford Escort) and Riaan Bothma (Chev Camaro). Gudmanz won race two as well, this time followed by Willie Hepburn (Ford Capri V6) and Green. Brendon Parker (Datsun Coupe) won the first Midvaal Historic race from Jackie Morrison (Ford Escort) and Seef Fourie (Datsun 160Y). Regard van Zyl (Alfa GTV6) took race two ahead of Brendon Parker (Datsun Coupe) and Rene van Rensburg (Ford Escort). Matt Nash (Van Diemen) won the first race for Historic Single Seaters, ahead of Chris Clarke (Titan) and Richard Wilson (Lotus 27). Nash won race two as well, this time followed by Wilson and Paul Richardson (Dulon). The first Charlies Super Spar Pursuit handicap race went to Tegan Leyshon (Ford Escort), followed by Kobus Brits (Porsche 911R) and Carlos Gameiro (BMW 325). Rob Clark (Citroen Club) won the next time, pursued by Johan Swanepoel (Alfa Berlina) and Werner Hartzenberg (Porsche 928). The opening INEX Legends heat went to Jason Loosemore, leading home Sean Moore and Gerhard Roux. Justin Robertson won race two from Loosemore and Willie Erasmus, with race three going to Jagger Robertson, ahead of Charl Roux and Loosemore.

30 MOTORSPORTKUNS

JUAN MANUEL FANGIO kampioenskap gewen.
