EMERALD SPEED FESTIVAL - PREVIEW
The Monkey made me do it
Emerald Speed Fest – Emerald Resort and Casino Event postponed to 28, 29 February to 1 March 2020 The Emerald Speed Fest, originally scheduled for the 28th and 29th September 2019, has been moved to a more desirable date in early 2020. The Emerald Speed Fest is a motorsport and motoring lifestyle event that will take place at the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vanderbijlpark. The event, presented by Messe Frankfurt South Africa, will now take place 28, 29 February to 1 March 2020. Challenges posed by the current security concerns in Gauteng which present a potential travel risk to competitors and spectators and date clashes with other local motorsport events prompted the change of date. “A date in early 2020 has proven to be a more desirable option for this exciting new motorsport event. The safety of competitors and spectators is a prime concern and the new date will also ensure that all competitors in local motorsport will get an opportunity to participate in this unique event” stated Shaun Swart, Head of Business Development for show organizers Messe Frankfurt South Africa. “Messe Frankfurt South Africa is fully committed to deliver a safe and successful event and the new date provides a better platform to achieve this objective. We would also like to thank our event partners and the venue for the overwhelming support of the exciting new motorsport event” added Messe Frankfurt South Africa CEO Joshua Low. High-performance race cars, modern road-cars, historic race cars and supercars will compete in a time challenge along a 1.6km (1 mile) strip of tar at the Vaal Resort. The event will offer competitors a challenging high-speed run competing, in classes, for a variety of prizes totaling close to half a million rand in value. Spectators will witness these high-performance road and race cars in action as well as also enjoy a variety of displays and refreshments. The pit area will be open to the public. Classic Car displays as well as motoring and motorsport related exhibitors will add to the excitement of the event. Visitors will also benefit from the family orientated features and attractions Emerald Resort has to offer. KYALAMI 9 HOURS 2019 3
PORSCHE AND OLSEN WIN KYALAMI 9 HOUR Porsche and Dennis Olsen are the 2019 Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli champions after a dramatic conclusion to this year’s title showdown at the revived Kyalami 9 Hour. South African fans had waited 37 years for their endurance classic to return, but the hiatus was more than worth it. A race mostly run in bright sunshine ended under the cover of darkness and in a cloud of spray when the action finally resumed following a two-hour-long Safety Car period caused by heavy rain. History will recall Frikadelli Racing’s pole-winning 911 GT3 R shared by Olsen, Nick Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet enjoying a perfect day that included fastest lap (Tandy) and victory, which also secured Porsche the Manufacturers’ crown, Olsen the Drivers’ title, and the winning crew Kyalami’s original 9 Hour trophy. But it was far more complicated than that… Walkenhorst Motorsport’s Christian Krognes, Mikkel Jensen and Nicky Catsburg recorded BMW’s best result of the season with second, while long-time race leaders Richard Lietz, Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen completed the podium in their GPX Racing Porsche. Seven drivers entered the season finale with a chance of winning the title, while Porsche had to overcome a 22-point deficit in order to beat Mercedes-AMG. And it received a helping hand early on when GruppeM’s entry, which also featured Drivers’ Championship leader Maxi Buhk,
retired on lap one with an engine issue. That opened the door for Maxi Goetz and Olsen who began the day six and 10 points, respectively, behind Buhk. Sustained pressure from the other four protagonists – Frederic Vervisch, Dirk Werner, Matt Campbell and Christopher Haase – failed to materialise. Instead, it was GPX’s Porsche – eligible to score Manufacturers’ points but without a Drivers’ contender among its ranks – that made much of the running despite initially appearing behind Jordan Pepper’s doublestinting Bentley on the timing screen. A Safety Car period to retrieve Strakka’s crashed Mercedes-AMG – the manufacturer’s second nominated car to retire within the first three hours – left GPX out front from Walkenhorst’s BMW,
which had steadily climbed the order after starting 16th, and Frikadelli’s Porsche. Instead, SPS Automotive Performance’s Mercedes-AMG took up the chase. Maxi Goetz, Yelmer Buurman and Luca Stolz found themselves out of sequence after an early pitstop to remove debris from their car’s radiator, but had the speed thereafter to keep pace with the Porsche and BMW. And when their strategies converged, there was barely two seconds between them. However, a biblical lightning storm and torrential rain were about to play their part in deciding both titles. It arrived with two-and-a-half hours left on the clock and prevented any green flag running until 25 minutes remained. When racing finally resumed, SPS’s Buurman was out front and in prime position to seal the Manufacturers’ title for Mercedes-AMG and Drivers’ crown for Goetz. But that all changed within one lap of the restart when Lietz, Tandy and Catsburg muscled their way past. Lietz then duly moved aside for Tandy, whose extra points were enough to give Olsen the Drivers’ crown. Catsburg also dispatched the GPX Porsche, but was unable to catch Frikadelli’s example over the closing stages. Several pitstop infringements prevented Audi Sport from challenging, but Christopher Haase, Markus Winkelhock and Christopher Mies still finished fourth after making the most of the late wet running. SPS slipped to fifth while Oliver Jarvis, Edoardo Liberati and Alex Imperatori completed the top-six in KCMG’s #18 Nissan, which was a top-six candidate throughout. KUS Team 75 Bernhard (Porsche) and R-Motorsport (Aston Martin) completed the overall top-10. The 2020 Intercontinental GT Challenge campaign begins at the Bathurst 12 Hour in Australia (January 31 – February 2).

4 KYALAMI 9 HOURS 2019
A PIECE OF HISTORY RE-WRITTEN Written by Nick Beukes In November of 1962, during the fifth 9-Hour Race at Kyalami, David Piper’s green Ferrari GTO raced to victory, with co-driver BRM test driver, South African Bruce Johnston, and so set the benchmark for ten years. He won the 9-Hour five times in his Ferraris and once in 1969 in his Team Perfect Circle Porsche 917. After a near death crash in Steve Mc Queen’s production of “Le Mans” created at real speed, David lost the lower half of his right leg which ended his professional motor racing career. Luckily for us here in South Africa, David kept his promise of ‘being back’ and for many years we enjoyed some historic racing at Zwartkops and Killarney with what was then known
as the David Piper Day, only a few years ago the name changing to the Passion for Speed being held at Zwartkops International Raceway. 2020 will then also see the 19th Passion for Speed back at Zwartkops and Killarney respectively. Now, getting back to David; in 1969 he won the Kyalami 9 Hour race in a Porsche 917. In 2019, a very special piece of history was made when Team Perfect Circle was reborn through the hard work and effort that André Bezuidenhout, who, along with his long standing friendship with David Piper, needed to put a strong team together for this special 9 Hour event. His first stop was his arch nemesis and rival, Franco Scribante. Franco, together with Silvio Scribante then made up the three-man team drivers. They then went about their business by engaging Simpson Racing in the UK who would supply them with their weapon of choice in the form of

a 2013 Porsche 997 GT3R. Incidentally this was also the oldest car entering the race at Kyalami 2019 event. Once the machinery and the driver entries were submitted, André Bezuidenhout approached Wayne Riddle to administer and stitch all the elements together that made up this very special Team Perfect Circle. As part of this historic moment, André approached David, who is now in his early eighties and his knowledgeable wife, Liz, to join this event in person to enjoy and relive his 50 year anniversary of his win in 1969 with the Porsche 917. Straight after the Festival of Motoring being held at Kyalami annually for the past few years in a row now, Denis Klopper, who is part and parcel of this prestigious event too, was approached by Kyalami 9 Hour Pty (Ltd) to assist as the Race & Circuit Activations Manager for the Kyalami 9 Hour race. Denis then liaised with all SRO circuit related matters pertaining to the 9 Hour race itself. This in turn also meant that Denis, who has been involved with Kyalami events for many years, was tasked to assist with the historic side of the 9 Hour. The historic parade made out part of this historic event and Denis managed to have a Gunston livery Lola T70 (Pole position in the 1969 race), together with the Porsche 917 of Team Perfect Circle, who was second on pole for the 1969 race doing the parade lap in the same formation of these two cars starting the parade lap in 2019 in the same order. About thirty of South African historic race and road cars made up the parade and legendary cars such as Tony Viana Winfield BMW, a Lucky Strike livery Chevron and other locals could be seen reliving some good memories of Kyalami in its heyday. Denis also mentions that the Tony Viana
BMW will be going to Goodwood in 2020, indeed an honour to be able to have a truly South African car represented there. Denis asked well known friend, Pim Pieterse, who are both involved with the upcoming ESF event in early 2020, to set up a promotional stand at the Kyalami 9 Hour, where Pim had his Porsche 917 (now in the Team Perfect Circle livery), as well as the Lola T70 in the ESF livery, on show and as part of the parade.
Pim, on his side though, had upon reading that the Team Perfect Circle was going to be revived, sent a Whatsapp message to André Bezuidenhout, offering his personal Porsche 917, which by the way, is probably the only road going 917 in South Africa and actually on the Continent of Africa, making the car available to use into whatever format they as Team Perfect Circle desired, so as to commemorate the 1969 winning car. Pim got a very big ‘Yes’ from André to use his Porsche 917 as a replica of the winning Porsche 1969 car. Kobus Jonker, race engineer for Franco, together with his engineering team, did a proper body-off of chassis project on the Porsche and paint stripping was meticulously done to get the car fully refurbished and restored to represent the 1969 Porsche with the exact livery of the Team Perfect Circle winning car of David Piper and Richard Attwood. In the 2019 race itself, racing their 2013 Porsche 997, the dream unfortunately came to a premature end when, after about three and a half hours, which, at that stage the race was under a safety car full course yellow, the Porsche would not accelerate when the track went back to green. After the pit stop it was determined that the gearbox would not find third gear and subsequently it was decided by the team to retire the car. The dream however, is not yet over as plans are already in place for the team to continue participating in the 2020 GT3 Intercontinental GT3 season. But we will definitely have more info on that in a future edition of the magazine. We wish Team Perfect Circle the best of luck with their Endeavour.
6 PRETORIA OLD MOTOR CLUB
JAPANESE CARS AT POMC 2019 On Sunday the 10th of November, the Pretoria Old Motor Club held its last event of 2019, with classic Japanese cars and motorcycles on display. The first Japanese vehicle that proved really popular in South Africa was the Datsun 1200 bakkie of the early to mid1960’s, and when Car Magazine tested it for the October 1964 issue, it was given the nickname “Mossie maar man” (small but tough). They are getting rare but an immaculate 1964 model, owned by Derek Nell, was on display. He bought it from a farmer’s son and is the third registered owner. The bakkie is still in an original condition, but its interior has been restored and its air cleaner and camshaft have been painted the original colour. The only resemblance between this bakkie and the Datsun 1200 sedan was the model designation. The sedan was introduced in 1971 and became very popular; the range was also available in a coupé and a bakkie in South Africa. However, a very special version of the 1200 was on display. A two-door sedan was available in some markets, including the United States of America, but it was not available in South Africa. Andrew Langham owns one of the few that were imported to Zimbabwe and made it to South Africa. The 1200 two-door was based on the De Luxe and was known as the 1200 R, but Andrew’s car is very different. He modified it according to the 1200 GX specifications, which means that his car has the twincarburettor engine, the instrument binnacle containing a rev counter and the threespoke sports steering wheel, to mention a few features. He also had disc brakes and 13-inch Minilite alloy rims fitted. The rear side windows were difficult to find; he had two that were intact but when one was broken, he had to find another one.
Fortunately, he came across somebody who had stripped a similar car for motor racing and fitted the windows from that car. He also restored the differential. He used the spares from a GX sedan which he had bought. Andrew owns other Datsun models as well, including a 1200 GX Coupé and a 120 Y station wagon, another extremely rare model in South Africa. The Mitsubishi Tredia Turbo was the first turbocharged car that was available in South Africa, but they are very rare nowadays. Willem du Plooy has owned one on more than one occasion and has since bought another one. This car has done 300 000 km and has proven to be totally reliable. It is one of about six that are still running, which is strange for a car that was supposed to be aimed at the mass market. Not all cars on display were in concours condition, and they don’t need to be either. Bill Flynn’s Toyota Hilux 4x4 double cab was manufactured in 1988 and is fitted with the very popular Toyota 2,2 litre 4Y engine that was used in the Hilux and HiAce for many years. Although it has shown obvious signs of wear and tear, its engine is still original and has done 500 000 km. Bill uses this vehicle for work and has no intention of selling it. A completely different Toyota bakkie that has attracted attention for a few years now, is Johan Stapelberg’s 1972 Corona Mark II, which was based on the contemporary Corona 1900 Mark II sedan. It was a more refined alternative to the original Hilux. However, Johan ‘s bakkie, which he bought for R 600 many years ago, has been heavily modified even though it looks just about original. Its engine has been replaced by the one fitted to the Toyota Corolla 1,8 TRD in the 1980’s and its drum brakes were replaced with front disc brakes. This meant that the original
rims could not be used, therefore he had Minilite rims fitted. Johan Smith is a Mazda Rotary enthusiast, and he owns a Mazda Capella RS racing car, a model that has become very rare in South Africa. However, the car he displayed, was a 2004 Mazda RX8, fitted with the six-speed gearbox. The car is completely original and has only done 99 000 km. He bought the RX 8 from the first owner six years ago. A few motorcycles were also on display, including three classic models owned by Meyer Erlank. The Suzuki GT 750 was a liquid-cooled model with a two-stroke engine and was manufactured until the mid-1970’s. It was available in colours like blue, orange and green, but Meyer reverted to the original black colour. The only item he could not restore and had to replace, was the exhaust system. The Yamaha RD 400 was a two-cylinder two-stroke model and built the 1976 model he displayed from three different motorcycles. As a result, the frame and engine numbers do not match. In those days, Kenny Roberts was a very successful Grand Prix motorcycle rider who raced for Yamaha. The yellow, black and white livery of Roberts’s racing motorcycles became iconic and Meyer painted his RD 400 in the same colours. The third classic motorcycle Meyer displayed, was another two-stroke Yamaha, the legendary RD 500, which was developed for Grand Prix motorcycle racing. There was a very small difference between the RD and the RZ 500 that preceded it; the changes were mainly cosmetic. The RD came with a silver frame, but Meyer had his painted black. The motorcycle’s fairing was in a poor condition, but that has been restored and painted, along with the fuel tank. The first event for 2020 will be the American day on the 8th of March.
PRETORIA OLD MOTOR CLUB 7
AIR COOLED SHOW 2019
The annual show for cars with air-cooled engines was held on Sunday the 6th of October at the premises of the Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC) in Silverton. The ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle was the most common vehicle on display, but two very special models attracted a lot of attention. They were two of the very last to be manufactured in the world, having left the factory in Mexico in 2003. They were registered as 2004 models as the new model year commences in July every year. These models, known as the Ultima Edicion, were fitted with the 1,6 litre engine with fuel injection, the same engine management system as the Golf 1 and a catalytic converter. The cars almost did not make the exhibition because they were held up at the harbour for three weeks. The least expensive four-wheel-drive vehicle in South Africa in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s was the little Steyr-Puch Haflinger, that hailed from Austria but was assembled by Autolec Industries in Wadeville, close to Alberton, for the South African market until 1972. Three were on display, one of them owned by Carl Theron, one by his son and the third, which has been changed a little bit, by Charles Leach. Charles is a bird watcher and he has had new door panels, which can take a pair of binoculars, a specially adapted canopy and wooden rails. To him, user-friendliness is more important than originality, although only minor changes have been made. Gerhard Ryksen runs a museum for air-cooled Volkswagen models and he displayed two vehicles he restored. The Fleetline Kombi was introduced to South Africa in 1974 and was a split-window model that looked like the original Kombi but was fitted with a modern 1,6 litre engine from the contemporary Beetle. Gerhard has restored one, which was complete but still needed an engine. He also painted it in the original Penrod Yellow colour. In 1976, a few big changes were made to the
Volkswagen Kombi and Microbus range. The Fleetline was discontinued; a model featuring its bodywork but the nose and one-piece windscreen of the Kombi 1600 L was introduced in its place. The engine of the Microbus range was enlarged from 1800 to 2000cc. Gerhard also displayed a Microbus 2 000 Executive manufactured in that year. The paintwork needed some attention, but the Microbus was painted in its original white colour. Gerhard used parts from seven other vehicles to complete this restoration project. The TM 539 engraving in its windows suggests that it spent some time in Middelburg Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), as TM used to be the registration letters for this town. An amazing number of VW Beetle Cabriolet models, all converted by the German coachbuilder Karmann, are in South Africa, and Jaco du Toit displayed four of them. The oldest of these was a white 1958 model with a few modern features, like flat wheel covers and flashing indicators in the place of the semaphore indicators. Jaco intends to restore it to its original condition, except for the indicators. Another cabriolet on display was a 1500, which is a 1972 model according to him, but is still fitted with the steering wheel that was standard equipment on South African VW Beetles until 1971. He has owned it for three or four years but does not know who imported it originally. Adriaan Loedolff was an enthusiast of the Volkswagen Type 3 models, which consisted of the Fastback, the Variant (also known as the Squareback) and the sedan. Adriaan owned an example of each model but he died last year. One of the cars he owned, was a 1600 sedan, manufactured in 1969, its last year of production. Adriaan overhauled the engine of this car with Bill Noble. After Adriaan’s death, Tyron Morris bought this sedan, and displayed it. Another air-cooled model that has always been a classic is the Porsche 911,
several of which were on display. The Cabriolet was only introduced in the 1980’s, as an additional model to complement the Coupé and Targa models. Natie Ferreira has owned this 1987 Carrera 3,2 Cabriolet for three years. This car was imported from Miami in the American state Florida in 1990. Nothing has been done to the car, but its alloy rims are not original, and according to him, they make the car look more distinctive. Not all air-cooled cars are from Volkswagen or Porsche. One of the most unusual air-cooled cars was the Messerschmitt KR 200, owned by Anton van Zyl. He always wanted to get hold of one and found his 1960 model in Louis Trichardt in Limpopo. His restoration was made a lot easier by a person in Port Elizabeth. He had a lot of spare parts and insisted that Anton buy everything. The KR 200 was the most successful Messerschmitt model and was manufactured until 1963. The current Fiat 500 has been one of the most successful cars inspired by a legend of yesteryear, and one of the original 500’s was on display. Morné Liebenberg owns a 1960 model 500 D for twelve years. This car has been imported as a right-hand drive and has been restored to its original condition.

10 RENAULT CLUB ZA
CLUB YEAR END FUNCTION The Renault Club ZA ended a great year spending the weekend of 7-8 December at Lavender Hills Guest Farm in Parys. The venue is a perfect place for club events with good accommodation and a well-equipped lapa. Sharon, who manages the farm, does a perfect job to ensure that everyone enjoys their stay. The long awaited summer rain also paid us a visit, with our faithful friend ‘load shedding’ too. We had booked the Lapa for the weekend and the roof on the “stoep” provided enough shelter from the rain for the entire club to sit and “kuier” with adequate space to still fit the braais. Although the rain persuaded most members to leave their older Renaults at home, there were a couple of more modern Renaults normally not seen at classic car outings. Phil and his family braved the weather and attended all the way from Pretoria in his 850cc Renault R4. Basil and Mary surprised us all arriving in his yellow R10 not normally expected out in the rain. We have done things slightly different this year from a normal treasure hunt to make a more relaxed atmosphere and give people more time to mingle and enjoy the
surrounding area. During load shedding I drafted a list of items that could be found in Bree Street’s wide variety of shops. With all who attended having a cell phone with Whatsapp it made things easy to create a group through which the event could be managed and instructions for the day communicated to individuals. Saturday morning before everyone went for breakfast in town, me and Gina allocated two items that each couple had to bring back from their day’s exploration. These items ranged from a 7”single, hair crunchy, 1962 1c coin, candy apricots, fishing lure, vintage Kiki, duck whistle, antique wooden washing peg and Frankie’s Ginger Beer. Some articles were not available in town and it was quite amazing to see the innovative plans people came up with to substitute these items. Some realized when spending money in a franchise store that since 2002 the 1 and 2 cent coin were withdrawn due to inflation and they had to go to antique
stores to find a 1962 one cent coin. We ended off the evening with a social braai and catching up on the good old times. Sunday morning we all booked out and went for breakfast in town again before every one went their separate ways. The committee want to thank all our loyal members, without your support this would not be possible. From the 1st edition of SA Car Clubs Magazine the club and members were part of the magazine and want to congratulate Nick Beukes and his team on the 10th birthday of SA Car Clubs Magazine and hope to share this wonderful platform for many years to come.

In 2009, Ralph Kernes raced a Blue Renault Clio III, 2.0 Sport. He raced this car Nationally, in Production Cars. During 2009, he also built up a Red Clio III 2.0 Sport, Race car. This car he raced in MPC (Modified Production Cars) in 2010. In 2010, Ralph and Xavier Gobille, the then CEO of Renault South Africa, each drove one of the 2 x Clio III’s on the Zwartkops Raceway. What an awesome experience. In October of 2009, in the very first edition of this Magazine, the Editor, Nick Beukes, wrote / printed an article on Ralph. Today, ten years later, Ralph is in possession of each and every magazine, that Nick has printed / published. He has lever arch files, with plastic sleeves, each housing one issue. He has recently started the third file, as each file only holds 40 issues. Ralph had sold the Red Clio to another Privateer, and by end 2018, Big Boss were in possession of this Beauty. Near the end of 2018, Wayne Robertson, from Big Boss, offered to sell Ralph back the Red Clio. One condition, he started racing it at the beginning of 2019, even before he paid Big Boss one cent. Ralph collected the vehicle from them, and set about spraying the inside of the Red Clio, and getting it “Ralph – Ready” for the 2019 season. Stickers were updated after his first race, to better cover the car. He raced His Red Lady, in the Clubman’s MPC series, where he has won 1ST in his class, and 2ND Overall in Index of Performance. Ralph’s very first race was in 1989, after being cleared of Testicular and Lympho Cancer. This year, Ralph has been Cancer Clear for 32 years, and has raced now for 30 years, missing just 2 or 3 years, when he had no car to race.

Oukar groete, Pieter Grobler.
SA CAR CLUBS MAGAZINE
celebrates 10 YEARS
Thank you for your support!
22 SHAWN TYLER TRANSPORT MUSEUM
SHAWN TYLER MUSEUM Everybody knows the name Shawn Tyler by now through his amazing Vintage museum that is published in the SA Car Club magazine regularly since Issue 22, but few really know the man behind the scene. So we’ve decided to bring you a bit of nostalgia by celebrating the 10 years of the magazine, also the fact that Shawn has been part and parcel of the magazine since Issue 22 way back in 2013. Shawn is also proudly in possession of each and every edition of SA Car Clubs Magazine from Issue 1 up to the latest edition. He has created through his passion, a piece of memorabilia in its own by preserving a piece of car clubs history in his museum as all the copies are neatly stacked in order in his magazines/books section of the museum. A bit of the man himself, is that Shawn is a modest man to say the least and has a great sense of humour. He is the kind of the guy that when asked “what is the one item in your museum that you like the most?”, he will not be able to tell you because he loves all of his collections, whether it be his vintage cars, model cars, ancient petrol pumps, hood ornaments, or number plates from all over the world, in all one can say he is an over-all transport collector... This is the true mark of a man who doesn’t let his personal belongings rule his life because it is not so much the items themselves that matters to him, but what they stand for and, most importantly, the history behind them and where they originated from, who they belonged to, why they were made, etc. It’s their endurance through the times that
makes Shawn’s enthusiasm towards them tick. Without making this article too long a story, Shawn bought his first car, a 1961 Chevy Bakkie (Canadian), from his brother in law, Luigi Zanna, in Pietersburg (now known as Polokwane). Shawn’s father also owned a couple of cars back in his day, but always ended up selling them. Not wanting to exactly follow his father’s footsteps in this regard, Shawn made it his mission in life to always keep his cars and antiques. So perhaps we have Shawn’s father to thank for the amazing museum that Shawn now owns and continuing to grow... In Shawn’s interview back then, I asked him if there was any car that he would still like to own and he came back with a very interesting response. He says that if he ever had the money (modesty coming through again), he would like to own a Hispano Suiza. That dream is still alive... Note: As part of the featuring cars in Shawn’s featuring article in Issue 22, these two beauties were part of the feature, namely his 1952 Opel Kapitan and a 1930 Ford Model-A Pick-Up Soft-Top. In the next edition of SA Car Clubs, Shawn will be showing off some of his latest developments regarding the museum and we will feature some racing memorabilia which has been added to his collection over time. I am looking forward visiting him at his museum. Shawn, thank you for being part of the magazine for all these years, may our friendship en mutual enthusiasm for all things wheels continue into the next 10 years of the magazine.

THE PISTON RING CLUB - EVENTS
SA Car Clubs
THE PISTON RING CLUB Written by Thys Venter I noticed this Mercedes Benz 190SL for the first time at Vorlaufer Cars standing in a corner. The car was partially restored at the time, but it was clear that the restoration came to a stop. As I always believed that the 190SL is one of the best-looking cars of that era, I expressed in interest in acquiring this car. In April 2016, I received a call from Wally Vorlaufer, who told me that the owner of the car did not want to proceed with the restoration and that the car was available. Once we finalised the price, the car was collected, and we commenced with taking stock of what we bought. The bodywork Engine and transmission were already restored, but the interior was missing. The car was produced in 1957 as a left-hand model with a factory hard top. These cars were sold with two options, a convertible or a hard top. The hard top originally was more expensive than the soft top, but the soft top is now obviously more desirable, and most hard tops have now been converted to soft tops. It was decided to keep the car as original as possible. The colour was kept as Blue-Grey and the hard top was retained. Many parts were missing, and we compiled an item list of all the parts that were needed to complete the car. We realised very soon that the seat frames that came with the car, were from another vehicle. After searching unsuccessfully for a set of front seats, we were eventually left with importing a set of newly manufactured seat frames from The Netherlands at a very high price. The interior kit was imported from the US. After we received the car in our Workshop at Route 101 Classic Car Centre in Jet Park, the vehicle was stripped down to evaluate the quality of the work done on the car and to determine what parts were still required to complete the restoration. The main challenge when restoring a 190 SL, is to determine the exact configuration of the car as it left the factory. There were regular upgrades on these vehicles, especially on the earlier models. The 190 SL design was conceived in the USA when the Distributer Max Hoffman convinced the board of Mercedes Benz in Stuttgart to produce a production version of the 300SL racing car along with an accompanying smaller sports car. Both models were to be made available at the New York Autoshow in February 1954 – five months later! It was Max 10 Hoffman • ISSUE 84 who “sold” this idea to Mercedes Benz based on his assurance that he would import and sell these cars in large quantities. The stars of that show were the two SL Models and paved the way for future business success in America. I need to thank Piston Ring for recognising this vehicle by awarding a Chairman’s Choice award on Continental day.

24 STUDEBAKER CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA
We had an excellent turn out for the Special invites and deciding on the winners proved to a difficult task, as they were all well deserving.
THE 18TH ANNUAL
STUDEBAKER CLUB CAR SHOW The Show Day is always booked a year in advance or rather; the last Sunday in October is confirmed as the date. Now this year we should have consulted the crystal ball, the 27th would be the date where the Springboks played Wales in the world cup Rugby Semi Final. I mention this as we always have a wonderful turnout of cars and spectators and this year was no different, but there were many that stayed at home to watch the semi-final. So with reduced numbers and a hastily set up Large Screen TV at the tearoom, you can imagine that there weren’t many people looking at the immaculate cars between 11 and 12:30. It was all worth the sacrifice and I am not sure that many will remember the 19-16 score. But we all remember the 32-12 score when the Springboks won the world cup for the third time beating England the following Sunday.

28 BENONI HERITAGE VEHICLE & ENGINE CLUB
40 YEARS OF THE FORD GRANADA MARK TWO In issue 40 & 41 of SA CAR CLUBS Magazine in 2013 I did the story of 40 years of the Ford Granada Mark One. The Ford Granada Mark Two is a collectable motor car, and popular in Europe. The Ford Granada Mark Two was introduced in South Africa in 1978 and discontinued in 1985. Not a completely new design but just a new design from the floor pan upwards. It was a design for the 1980s cars of the boxy shape. The shape was just different. The Cortina Mark Four and the Escort Mark two were also designed of similar style away from the Coca-Cola style. Although almost all the suspension and mechanicals used were from the Mark One. The floor pan, seats, carpet, front doors and door panels are carried over from the Mark One. Similar changes for the Cortina and Escort. The Mark two has a unitary body and chassis with sub-frames carrying the fully independent suspension. The Front Suspension consists of a lower control arm with upper wishbone on each side. There is also a front anti-roll bar. The rear suspension consists of a trailing A-frame lower wishbone carrying the rear upright on each side. Twin circuit brakes with discs at the front wheels and
drums at the back wheels with the hand brake working the back wheels. There were three body styles used. Two and four door saloons and a estate. In SA only the four door saloon was produced. Production in SA was under the local content program. The Mark Two came out with a choice of many engines consisting of 1.7L & 2.0L 4cyl petrol. 2.0L, 2.3L.2.8L & 3.0L V6 petrol engines. 5.0L V8 petrol engines. 2.0L, 2.1L & 2.5L 4cyl diesel engines. In SA there was the 2.0L 4cyl Pinto engine, the 3.0 V6 and the 5.0L V8. The Mark Two also came out with a choice of two types of gearboxes, a 4 & 5 speed manual and a 3 speed automatic. Steering was by manual or power rack & pinion. In SA the entry level car was the GL and the top of the range was the Ghia. In 1980 the GL became the GLE as the interior and bumpers were upgraded. The model with the V8 engine was produced by Basil Green Motors as the Granada Perana and sold by Ford Dealerships. The Ford Granada Mark Two drove and handled very similar to the Mark One car. The cars had a very comfortable ride and was a car made for long distance touring. Many parts are interchangeable
between the Mark Two and Mark One. There are not many Ford Granadas around in SA anymore and body parts are very rare. Another great car by Ford which will still be around for many years. All Granadas are driver owner serviceable with a few components needing specialist service. Rust is not as a big problem as the Mark One, as the Mark Two had less body trim. But rust will always be a problem.
For more information on both motor clubs feel free to contact Basil Chassoulas Email: basil.ecurie@gmail.com Tel: 082-851-3052
BENONI HERITAGE VEHICLE & ENGINE CLUB 29
PRE AND EARLY POST WORLD WAR TWO
RACING IN SOUTH AFRICA South Africa had its first Grand Prix in 1934 and almost every year after that for many years hosted a Grand Prix. Most of this very interesting history has been accurately recorded in Classic Car Africa magazines from 1994 to 2004. Most of the articles by Frank Hoel. Greg Mills has written many books on post WW2 racing in South Africa. Historic Racing is very well supported in South Africa today of vehicles from the 1950s to about the 1980s. Pre 1950s motor car racing is nonexistent at the moment. Rallying of Cars and Motorcycles from Veteran up to Classic is strong. These rallies are run under SAVVA Rules by SAVVA affiliated Motor Clubs. Benoni Heritage Vehicle and Engine Club a member of SAVVA is interested to host some pre 1950s motor car racing run under the SAVVA Motorsport dispensation. The events will not be full flat-out racing but a regularity race just like a regularity rally. The rallies are run on public roads. The
regularity races we hope to run on closed roads and on race circuits. How it is going to work is as follows: The competitor will do laps on a circuit at a speed he has chosen or given like 60, 80 or 100 Km/h. He will be timed by a hidden marshal on every lap. The penalty points will be the actual time over the chosen time. A heat of a race could be about ten laps and say make the best eight laps count. More details as we progress. BHVEC is planning the first race for about October 2018 to commemorate 70 years of the first St John Crusader 100 ran at Germiston Rand Airport on 30 October 1948. We are looking for entries of any type of motor cars from veteran right up to the early 1950s. We most welcome any RACING SPECIALS of that era. If interest is shown we can grow the event to more modern motor cars. Categories can be: Racing, sports, GT, racing specials and saloon cars. Replicas most welcome.
BHVEC want to run these events as a cheap form of racing using your RCL on the back of your membership card. There might be a entry fee required. BHVEC hopes to bring the older motor cars back into the sport. It also hopes to be a very safe way of racing to protect participants and motor cars. Most important is to have fun with sportsmanship and a racing theme.
(Above and top): An Austin Seven Single Seater Special of that era being restored by John Barty.

LATE GREAT MOTOR ASSOCIATION
AT KADIMA CONGREGATION They say “sharing is caring“ and that is just what we as a club did on 3 November 2019. A Church fete and charity event was organised by the Church. We as a club was invited to support the day and the events of the day. To say it was hot is an understatement. A summer heatwave was in full effect. Fortunately there were a couple of stalls that sold coldrinks and ice cream and there was some shade to hide from the heat. There were fun activities such as tug of war, Mr. Beerbelly as well as Mr and Miss Kadima. Thank you to all club members who gave donations in the form of non perishable food as well as clothing. If anybody wishes to make a donation please contact. 011 477 4909 or email oord911@yahoo.com. Place of Refuge is a registerd NPO. Thank you to the organisers, public and Club members who supported the day.

38 TRACK ATTACK SERIES
2020 TRACK ATTACK SERIES Why the Track Attack Series? Well, We all want to race competitively and have fun on the day, simple as that! Rules and Regulations are put in place to make sure that everyone is on the same page. No 50 shades of grey areas! The Technical team will ultimately make sure that you are classed CORRECTLY. The 2020 Track Attack Series is bringing fun, competitive racing to everyone with a safe car, no matter make, model, performance, spec or how expensive/cheap it is. This series will put YOU against YOU... Yes, you will be your toughest competition while having a great time with friends. The Series will consist of 6 different “tracks, 7 Events (Including Prize Giving) during the year divided into 7 Classes... (did you expect anything else?) Details of the classes will be released shortly but you can expect : NOTE: ONLY 77 Spots available per event! So you better make sure you get your entries to avoid disappointment! You will be racing for the Ultimate Prize of R100,000! Yes, R100k! We are NOT splitting the money into various classes as each and everyone will stand the same chance to win the money. Ultimately we are looking for the best well rounded racer! I know this is confusing many, let me explain. You will be racing yourself on the day, we will be comparing your times against, you guessed it, your times. Consistency is KEY! We will be calculating the final result based on YOUR performance against yourself PLUS a small % of your Final Class position PLUS a small % of your OVERALL position. This means that you cannot try and be smart and perfectly consistent by going slow, you still need to go all out for top spot. (the only way to be consistent is to be on the limit) Prizes will still be for overall and class winners on the day and the Big Cash prize will be for the Series winner... Are you ready for the Challenge? For more info, visit: www.trackattack. co. za
MOTORSPORTKUNS 39
Persone wat in my kuns belangstel kan my kontak op selfoonnommer 082 906 2825, of e-pos by johanrabe1@gmail.com
