Regarding homeschooling, there are some things I’d change if I could and a few things I’ve learnt to do differently. Homeschooling parents often find themselves lost and frustrated when they try to model their homeschools on traditional schools. Find what works for your homeschooling family In the end, homeschooling

The anxiety of a homeschooling parent is real. There are constant worries about whether you’re doing everything right or whether they’re missing out on anything. To top it off, the whole world will have an opinion about how to homeschool your children. Try to avoid feeling so nervous about missing something that you don’t enjoy the homeschooling journey and all the amazing home instruction that goes with it. It’s a process and you and your children can all learn together. You can also learn what works for each other on the way. With homeschooling there’s always trial and error, but that’s part of the journey. Embrace the moments, the occasional mess and the benefits.

From experience with traditional schools, you’ll have phrases such as “grade levels”, “assessments” and “percentages” bouncing through your head. While certain people will ask about milestones concerning your child’s age, it’s important to remember that each child learns at their own pace. Ho meschooling doesn’t need to force your children to rush to a certain level through stress and tears. Homeschool curricula often allow is about what works for your family. At the beginning of our homeschooling journey, I was so focused on the activities other homeschooling families enjoyed that I didn’t notice whether those things worked for us. Regardless of whether all your friends use a certain curriculum, if it doesn’t work for you, that’s OK. If your current curriculum works amazingly, you don’t need to buy a new curriculum simply because other homeschool moms rave about it. If inspirational homeschooling podcasts suggest a certain schedule or method, but you know your kids aren’t going to benefit from the change, that’s OK too. Determine what to do for your homeschool by first determining the reasons for your choices.

There are many types of disorders within various categories and each child’s condition may be different. Here are four of the most common speech disorders that speech therapists treat in children:

Speech disorders can range from mild to severe. Some are present at birth, while others develop over time. Some are part of a neurological function, while others stem from injury or disability

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)

peech is one of the main ways in which children communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas with others. The act of speaking requires the precise co-ordination of multiple body parts, including the head, neck, chest and abdomen. A speech disorder refers to any condition that affects a child’s ability to produce sounds that create words. This disorder can disrupt a child’s ability to communicate and learn from others.

CAS is a communication disorder affecting the motor programming system for speech production. Speech production is difficult –specifically with sequencing and forming sounds. The person may know what they want to say, but there’s a disruption in the part of the brain that sends the signal to the muscle for the movement necessary to produce the sound. That leads to problems with 1

Children, teenagers and adults may suffer from these abnormal movement patterns of the face and mouth. They occur due to an abnormal growth and development of facial muscles and bones, the cause of which is unclear. An OMD, also known as a “tongue-thrust”, is characterised by improper tongue, jaw and lip positioning during swallowing, feeding and speaking. Children with an OMD often present with mouth breathing, low tongue posture (resting the tongue on the low teeth versus the roof of the mouth), malocclusion and forward protrusion of the tongue, or tongue-thrusting during swallowing. Children may also demonstrate a variety of other concerning symptoms. Treatment of OMD focuses on learning the appropriate resting posture of the tongue, habituating a new swallowing pattern and then correcting any speech sound errors. 2

Apraxia of speech can be discovered in childhood (CAS) or might be acquired, resulting from a brain injury or illness in both children and adults. When CAS is relatively severe, your child may need speech therapy three to five times a week. As your child improves, the frequency of speech therapy may be reduced.

An articulation disorder is a speech sound disorder in which a child has difficulty making certain sounds correctly. Sounds may be omitted or improperly altered during the course of speech, such as making the “th” sound instead of an “s” sound, or a “w” instead of an “r”. Young children will typically display articulation issues as they learn to speak, but they’re expected to “grow out of it” by a certain age. If the errors persist past a standard developmental age, which varies based on the sound, then that child has an articulation disorder. The most common articulation disorders are in the form of a lisp. Treatment options may include speech therapy exercises that focus on building familiarity with certain words or sounds, as well as physical exercises that focus on strengthening the muscles which produce speech sounds.

Stuttering and other fluency disorders Stuttering can come in a number of forms, including “blocks” characterised by long pauses, “prolongations” characterised by stretching out a sound and “repetitions” characterised by repeating a particular sound in a word. Stuttering isn’t always a constant and it can be exacerbated by nervousness or excitement. It can be developmental, meaning it begins during early speech acquisition, or acquired due to brain trauma. No-one knows the exact causes of stuttering in a child. It’s believed to have a genetic basis, but the direct link hasn’t yet been found. Children with relatives who stutter are three times more likely to develop stuttering. Stuttering is also more typical in children who have congenital disorders, such as cerebral palsy. Individuals who stutter may feel tension in their bodies and may even avoid situations or words that could trigger their stuttering. Secondary physical behaviours may include excessive eye-blinking or jaw-tightening. This occurs when speech is disrupted by involuntary repetitions, prolonging of sounds and hesitation or pausing before speech. Like any other speech disorder, it requires therapy and practice to treat or manage. Speech disorders can affect a child’s self-esteem and their overall quality of life. Fortunately, speech therapy, breathing exercises and sometimes anti-anxiety medications can help improve speech and reduce symp toms. If you’re concerned about your child’s speech development, talk to a GP or child and family health nurse.

Children grow out of speech problems While children’s speech development takes time and a young child doesn’t pronounce most words accurately the first time they say them, parents shouldn’t hold onto the idea that their child will grow out of a speech disorder. There’s cause for concern when a fouryear-old child’s speech is difficult for other people to understand. Children who don’t speak clearly are lazy Given the repeated misunderstandings and frustration that children with speech difficulties face, it makes no sense to suggest that they’re lazy. The truth is that most children with speech disorders respond well to intervention by a speech pathologist. Speech disorders are caused by tongue-tie While tongue-tie does exist (when a person has a short lingual frenulum), a review of research found no evidence to suggest a causative link between tongue-tie and speech problems.

Speech therapy doesn’t work Several studies show that speech therapy is an effective method for helping children develop their communication skills. One study of over 700 children with speech difficulties showed that speech therapy had a significant positive effect. 4

inding fun things to do in winter can be a challenge, especially for older kids and teenagers. And leaving your cosy fire and snuggly socks behind to venture out isn’t always at the top of your priority list. Thankfully, we’ve found plenty of ways to keep kids busy and prevent boredom this winter. Doing some of these activities together might be fun for the whole family. Winter certainly has its perks, but cold weather comes with its own set of challenges. It can be helpful to create a list of fun things to do when your child complains of being bored or you catch them spending too much time on their electronic devices

Here are our 10 best indoor suggestions: Play board games Playing board games together as a family bumps up the fun factor. Not only do these games lure kids away from their electronic devices, but they can also be educational, giving kids lessons in decisionmaking, consequences and strategic thinking. Better still, encourage kids to make their own board game. Give them a big sheet of cardboard, pencils, rulers, crayons, a dice and counters, and let them have fun creating it. Suggestions: a haunted castle (with pitfalls such as dungeons and monsters on certain blocks and advantages such as secret 1

Some suggestions for indoor herbs include chives, mint, rosemary, oregano and thyme. All you’ll need are potting soil, seeds or starters and a few pots (which the kids can paint or decorate).

Make a movie Is there anything more fun for kids than watching themselves? Come up with a simple plot, get some props and costumes together and write a loose screenplay. Older kids can help edit, too. Then screen it for everyone. Bring the spa to you Plan a spa session, complete with massage hydrant, relaxing music and chill time. Soak your feet, moisturise, trim and paint your nails, try a different hairstyle and make healthy smoothies. OK, not literally, but in this imaginary playtime scenario, you’re the client and your kids are the ones doing the pampering. You can switch roles after a while. Hopefully, you’ll get a halfway decent massage out of this game and the kids will love pampering you and being pampered by you in turn. Make a donation bin Take advantage of time indoors and contribute to a cause by getting rid of stuff you no longer use. Go through old clothes and toys as a family and encourage your kids to donate toys they no longer play with to other children who will. Set up a “donation bin” in the centre of the house and get to work. When the weather clears up, you can take them to charities and donation centres. In addition to clearing out clutter, this can also help teach kids about giving. Break out the summertime tent (or build a fort)

Try a classic treasure hunt or scavenger hunt to get the kids moving. Create a clue to find a location or item, then have another clue waiting at that spot. That tip leads to the next spot, and so on. Place a treasure, such as a toy or treat, at the final destination. This self-directed activity empowers the child to complete a task on their own (or co-operatively, if playing with others). At the same time, they learn about sequencing, which is the importance of following steps in order.

Sure, camping is more of a summertime activity for most families, but if you bring the tent into the living room, you can also bring some of that fun with you during the winter months. If you don’t have a tent, use sheets or boxes to build a fort in your living room and deck it out with pillows, rugs and even snacks inside. Paint a chalk wall This activity has somewhat permanent effects, but with the help of your kids, pick a blank wall in either their bedroom or a playroom to paint with chalk paint. Once it’s dry, be sure to leave chalk nearby so kids can go to town with their chalk artwork.

“When it comes to preventing sexual abuse, it’s never too early to educate your children. Parents have the responsibility to ensure that they safeguard their children in every way possible.

“We’re overwhelmed with children being neglected and abused,” says Meissenheimer. “As parents, we try our best to protect our children from harm, but we don’t always know how to approach such sensitive subjects.

“Another aspect to keep in mind is that sexual abuse often goes hand in hand with secrecy,” she adds. “Children are told not to tell “Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that our children have autonomy over their own bodies, even from a very young age.”

Meissenheimer uses a traffic light analogy which can be applied in two ways – with regard to areas on the bodies that are touched, as well as the manner in which a child is “It’stouched.widely accepted that the parts of a child’s body which are covered by bathing suits are their private parts and shouldn’t be touched by any person,” says Meissenheimer. “This is the red area on their bodies. You could consider putting in perspective for your child – mommy or daddy sometimes need to touch them there when they’re helping them take a bath if still young, or a doctor might need to look at these areas if they’re sick or hurt.

Considering the manner in which a child is touched, Meissenheimer again applies the traffic light system. “Red is any form of touch that a child doesn’t like, such as when a friend or sibling pulls their hair or pinches them. Orange refers to touch that makes a child feel uncomfortable or uncertain. This can include being touched in a way that isn’t necessarily unpleasant, but the person is someone the child doesn’t trust or feel comfortable with. Green means ‘go’! This is all forms of touch that children find enjoyable, such as tickling, hugs and kisses from people they trust.”

Meissenheimer advises remembering that all children’s traffic lights can look different, as kids have different tolerances to touch, just as adults do. “Some children might enjoy cuddling with a parent, while others will shy away,” she explains. Teach your child to gauge their own tolerance to touch and respect it.

We often teach our children about “stranger danger”. Unfortunately, when it comes to sexual abuse, the perpetrator is more likely to be someone a child knows who has access to them. Let your child know that they can stand up to any person who makes them feel uncomfortable, even if it’s a family member or a close friend. Take note

Orange refers to areas that are danger zones – in other words, areas close to their genitals. This includes their thighs, tummies and backs. While it isn’t necessarily wrong to touch a child in these areas, these are often the places where children are first tested to see their reaction to touch in a process called grooming. Teach your children that if they’re uncomfortable with any form of touching, they have the right to move away and tell any person, even an adult, to stop. Green areas of the body refer to areas that are safe to touch, such as the hands, feet or head. Though these are considered safe areas, a child still has the right to remove themselves from any form of touch that they don’t like.”

Reading is the foundation for success, not only in studies, but throughout a lifetime. Cultivating a love of reading in your child from an early age is one of the greatest gifts you can give them way home) promised hours of unalloyed pleasure. Unfortunately, the wonderful habit of reading is lost and few children these days spend their free time curled up with a good book. They prefer to play console games or spend hours in front of the computer screen. If they do read, it’s likely to be on a comparatively soulless Kindle.

Of course, digital information has benefits, including sharpening our eye-hand skills, but holding a book and flipping through pages provides important stimulation for a child’s sense of touch. They focus on understanding the content, rather than sitting and wondering what image the next click of the mouse will produce. Reading is the key to education

Many of us thought that the advent of the Internet necessarily meant the extinction of the written word, but reading has actually assumed an even greater place in our lives.

For parents and babysitters, reading or being read to is a special way of enjoying quality time with the young team on a daily basis. Book clubs and storytime at libraries bring together children from all groups. They develop listening skills and get the opportunity to re-tell what they’ve heard and share their own opinions with other kids in their age group.

A love of reading is cultivated by reading aloud from infancy. Make storytime a special time. Make funny voices, open your eyes wide and whisper when reading a tense passage. However, you don’t always have to read – sometimes it’s fun to come up with your own stories, or begin one and have each child continue to a certain point before the next one takes over.

Words are building blocks needed on all levels of life – from writing a letter to a friend to setting up a slide show to be understood by hundreds of delegates. Digital devices play a very important role in our daily lives, but parents should encourage their children to read printed books.

Worry happens when we keep thinking about negative things, uncertain outcomes or things that could go wrong in the future. Such things can result in our being afraid and therefore being stressed. Since worry often makes us fearful, it’s very often accompanied by the same physiological response we experience when we’re under true stress. As a result, we’ve come to conflate the two into one thing.

Stress can be defined as a physiological reaction to something in the environment that the individual believes to be greater than what they can cope with: in other words, something to be feared. The physiological reaction to stress is commonly known as “fight or flight”, which developed in humans in reaction to fearful situations, such as being chased by a wild animal or coming across a snake in one’s path.

A true stress response is healthy when it’s triggered by a genuine event that creates fear for our lives.

What do we worry about?

Humans worry about anything that went wrong in the past, what could go wrong in the future and whatever’s uncertain. Our brains are wired to see the negative in anything to protect us, so we can basically worry about anything.

Signs of stress and worry in children

Clearly, we need to address worry to avoid long-term stress. This is as true for adults as it is for young people and children.

Grouping the things that children worry about into themes can be helpful for assisting them. These themes are broadly: worry related to self, worry about school and family, peer relationships, as well as worry about the social and economic conditions in which they find themselves.

Younger children may not always be able to express that they’re worried and stressed, so it’s important to watch for indirect signs that this is what they’re going through. From an early age, it’s worth developing the vocabulary of emotions with children, so they can identify their feelings more clearly. In pre-schoolers and older children, signs of stress could include behavioural changes such as a short temper, aggression, tearfulness or moodiness. An inability to concentrate on tasks, nervous habits that start suddenly and withdrawal from friends and family are all signs that a child is experiencing stress. These behavioural changes could also disrupt normal home and school routines. Stress can also become apparent in physiological changes. Changes in appetite, sleep patterns and sleep problems (including bedwetting and nightmares) are signs that a child is stressed. A stressed child may also complain of headaches and stomach aches.

Having identified that your child is stressed, there are a few things you can do to help. Identify whether the stress is because of negative thoughts or because of worries about an event, person or experience.

They can use a distraction like exercise or a sense-filled activity (smelling a flower, dancing or listening to music) to help them redirect their thoughts. How can I get him to slow down and work methodically? – Vicki, Secunda In my experience, children who constantly rush through work/tests/ assignments usually do so because they feel challenged. Instead of trying to grasp a specific topic, question or task, they hurry through their work simply to get it done and out of the way. Others, especially children with ADHD, may want to get their work done as soon as possible before they lose their train of thought or forget the answers. Is your son challenged by the academic content or afraid he might forget the answer or specific details of the task? Does he feel intimidated by the content and embarrassed to say so? Try the following two strategies:

o Did you understand what you needed to do for this assignment? o If you didn’t understand, did you ask for an explanation before you did the assignment?

• Have him self-check at the end of each task/test/assignment. Put a basic checklist together of what he should double-check and let him mark items off, or initial each one as he does so. This could be specific for each subject/task or a general checklist for all work. Here are examples of what the checklist could contain:

If you take this into consideration, the average attention spans for teenagers should be:

• 14 years old: 28-42 minutes

• 12 years old: 24-36 minutes

• 16 years old: 32-48 minutes These, of course, are only generalisations, because how long a child is truly able to focus is largely determined by factors such as how many distractions are nearby (especially their cellphones), how hungry or tired the child is and how interested they are in the activity. Cognitive ability (ie, how strong their ability is in terms of the different types of attention spans) also plays a role. Since the onset of Covid-19 and the subsequent social restrictions, additional stress and much more time spent on screens, many kids and teens are having increased difficulty focusing and staying on task. Here are two easy strategies that will help with focus: Teach your child to plan ahead when they’re working on difficult tasks. A child who feels overwhelmed by the project/ task they’re working on will check out and get distracted quickly. At the beginning of the task/ project, help them identify potential stumbling blocks. For instance, if question 3 seems especially difficult, start with that one and help your child figure out how to approach it. Build in short brain breaks for tough tasks. Your teenager might be able to give 50 minutes of focus to a project when it’s broken into two 25-minute chunks with a five-minute break in between. Try working in a quick exercise to get their heart beating faster in between those two chunks of work (eg walking around the house or going for a five-minute bike ride). Exercise is a great way to activate the brain and a child’s ability to comprehend and memorise.

Choice Homeschooling students have access to more subjects than those typically offered in schools. In a traditional school, pupils at FET level (Grades 10-12) are usually restricted to choosing only a certain number of subjects or subject combinations, depending on the resources available. Logic and reasoning are also required to figure out how to use our resources and time to achieve our aims. Each goal has to be broken down with a logical starting point. We need to identify the resources needed to achieve it, prioritise it over other plans or activities and adapt to any sudden changes. That kind of understanding and the effort that goes into planning aren’t easy. Yet reflecting on how they do things and what they can do to improve helps children do things they sometimes dislike, understanding that this will help them move forward and eventually achieve their aims.

Fun ways to develop logic and reasoning skills Our everyday lives provide ample opportunities to use our logic and reasoning skills. Share your thinking process with your child as you work towards solving a problem, draw conclusions and come up with solutions in your day-to-day life. Verbalise and explain your thinking process and provide opportunities for your child to contribute and ask questions (an important part of the process).

For children of all ages, games such as Sudoku, tic-tac-toe or chess are fun ways of improving their logic and reasoning skills. Using pattern recognition games and visual teasers is another way to help children analyse what they’re seeing and identify a solution. When it comes to younger children, parents can limit their exposure to breaking news. Parents can control the amount of information this way. Try not to let your children experience the news without you. That includes letting the TV or audio play in the background. For kids under seven, keep the news away. Turn off the TV and radio news at the top of the hour and half-hour. Read the newspaper out of range of young eyes that can be frightened by the photographs (kids may respond strongly to pictures of other kids in jeopardy). Pre-school kids don’t need to see or hear about things that will only scare them, especially because they can easily confuse facts with fantasies or fears. So what can we do as parents to help them deal with all this information?

If parents don’t discuss scary news or current events with them, children might let their imaginations run wild. Or they may learn about news in a way with which you’re uncomfortable. No matter how old our kids are, threatening or upsetting news can affect them emotionally. Many can feel worried, frightened, angry or even guilty – and these anxious feelings can last long after the news event is over.

How do we prepare and protect kids from all the scary news out there, whether it’s a war overseas, a school shooting or a global pandemic? Processing bad news can be difficult for adults, let alone for children. Here’s how to help them receive it with the least trauma

When something scary is happening, look for the helpers. You’ll always find people who are helping. Focus on the positive –how people are gathering and taking care of each other. There’s evidence that talking about helpers really does make a difference to the way kids see their world. We also have to show them how we’re helping too, so take positive action together. You might consid er bringing your child to a peaceful rally or protest, collecting donations together or writing to an elected official. A sense of agency can dra matically reduce a child’s anxiety.

frightening media, some stories are simply too big to avoid. And as kids get older, if they don’t hear about it at home, they’ll almost certainly hear something from their friends. Parents should choose a quiet moment to check in with their kids, perhaps at the dinner table or at bedtime. Give kids facts and context. Check-ins also allow you to debunk memes, myths and misconceptions, which is crucial in the social media maelstrom. One of the most important things parents can do in this scary climate is tell kids the facts. For example: “No, we haven’t started World War III.” Allow your kids to ask questions about what they’re seeing, how they’re feeling and what they think. Give them a safe space to reflect and share.

Ultimately, children pick up on cues from adults and parents/ caregivers must model appropriate reactions to the events on the news. Information should be shared calmly and concisely with your child. This helps them feel comfortable discussing hard topics with you. Don’t dismiss their thoughts and feelings. Listen to what they have to say. Respond with supportive and honest comments. Validate any emotions your child shares with you, as validation helps encourage further conversation. When they ask why something happened, resist the temptation to label anyone “bad guys” or “evil”. It’s not helpful and may increase fears and confusion. Instead, talk about people being in pain, being angry and making bad choices. There’s one important thing parents shouldn’t be afraid to say: “I don’t know why this happened.” Sometimes parents don’t have the answers to all the questions and it’s ok to admit it. Being honest with our children about not knowing all the answers builds trust, so that when we do have answers, those answers are accurate and truthful.

Look up information together. For younger kids, use ageappropriate websites and discuss what you see or find together.

One of the best ways of teaching your kids the value of a rand is with pocket money. Asking them to do the dishes or cut the lawn teaches them to work for what they want (and helps you too!). Encourage teens to get a part-time job so they can start earning a regular income and begin making financial decisions. Once your kids are earning their own cash, co-create a budget. Explain to them about needs and wants. Explain that food is essential, but toys or games are a treat. That way, they’ll start learning how to prioritise. With cashless payments on the rise, younger kids might not realise that money leaves your account every time you tap your card, phone or watch. Print out your bank statements and run through a week’s worth of spending to give them the full picture.

“Every child is different and they respond to learning styles differently too, so understanding their ‘money personality’ will help you know how best to engage with them,” says renowned Australian money educator Vanessa Stoykov. Stoykov, who wrote the 2018 financial guidebook The Breakfast Club for 40-Somethings: A Novel Approach to Unlearning Money and Reinvent Your Life (Wiley), says the three personalities are: The hustler – someone who’s always seeking ways of making money and improving their financial situation. The saver – a person who enjoys being thrifty and saving their cash. The spender – someone who spends all the money they get.

“It’s invaluable for parents to be open about what they can and can’t afford. This helps children understand that they need to work for money and save their earnings to be able buy the things they want.”

“You’ll get the child who wants a Louis Vuitton bag. We need to teach them that before they spend all their money on such things, they should divert some of it into their savings,” she says.

Piggy-banks are an easy way to introduce the idea of savings, because young kids can see their money grow over time. For kids older than seven, open a savings account. This will give them control and accountability, which is the best way to learn. At this point, start teaching older kids about online banking, savings goals and interest. Explain that banks usually have different interest rates and choosing a higher interest savings account could help grow their money faster.

If your child’s a spender, it’s important to teach them to still save money, as this is the personality that’s the hardest to shift once it becomes ingrained, explains Stoykov.
