Minister to address the Consumer Goods Council Summit 2014 Manghoze, CEO of the CGCSA. “The summit advisory panel, consisting of top executives from a number of major South African consumer goods industry businesses, aims to give delegates a rich and relevant agenda, reflecting the true expectations of retailers, suppliers and third-party service providers. Over 35 speakers have been confirmed for the summit, which will focus on unlocking stakeholder potential and finding practical solutions for various challenges. “A concerted effort has been made to have a mix of international and local speak-

ers, with a maximum of 45 minutes per session,” adds Manghoze.

and New York’s diamond trade is unique. However, it never ceases to amaze me that in spite of the close relationship between our centres, when we hold these events, many people meet one another for the first time,” he says. Kaufman adds that the format of the diamond weeks in New York and Israel therefore proved to be very successful. Approximately 100 Israeli diamond firms will be able to participate in the event. “We expect we’ll be done quite quickly once the registration starts,” says Moti Fluk, Head of the event’s Organising Committee.

The Consumer Goods Council of SA (CGCSA) has announced that the Minister of Trade & Industry, Rob Davies, will be a keynote speaker at the CGCSA Summit scheduled for 28 and 29 October at Vodaworld in Midrand, Johannesburg. The minister will be speaking on the role of business and government in implementing the National Development Plan and the role of the CGCSA over the next 20 years. “We’re pleased to invite past and new delegates to this year’s instalment,” says Gwarega

The Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) and the Diamond Dealers’ Club of New York (DDC) will hold the third edition of the Israel Diamond Week in New York from 10-13 November on the trading floor of the DDC at 580 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. The annual event is a joint initiative of the DCC and IDE and aims to boost the trade between the two bourses’ members, to renew business between local suppliers and their clients and to lower the threshold for diamond-buying jewellery manufacturers and retailers who wish to gain access to the club.

“The New York diamond business community and the Israel diamond industry are interdependent,” says IDE President Shmuel Schnitzer. “Israel is a key supplier of higher-quality goods to the American market, while New York – and particularly the the DDC – is the gateway for diamond supplies coming from Israel. For many of our members, the DDC, located in the heart of Manhattan’s gem and jewellery district, is like a second home.” DDC President Reuven Kaufman concurs. “Undoubtedly, the synergy between Israel’s

Chris van Rensburg appointed new JCSA Chairman Chris van Rensburg from Studio C was recently appointed as the new Chairman of the Jewellery Council of SA for the next three years. In addition, Duncan Crosson, CEO of NWJ, was appointed Vice-chairman.

In view of his appointment, Van Rensburg has relinquished his position as Chairman of the Jewellery Manufacturers’ Association of SA (JMASA). Colin Campbell from the Ekurhuleni Jewellery Project was appointed new Chairman of the JMASA for the ensuing year, while Evert van Engelenhoven from Umjindi Jewellery in Barberton was appointed Vice-chairman.

DÉbut of the Apple Watch Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch, a personal device which features new technologies and what the company describes as a “pioneering user interface that honours the rich tradition of precision watchmaking”. The watch uses a specially designed and engineered “digital crown” that provides an innovative way to scroll, zoom and navigate. It also enables the user to send and receive messages, answer calls to an iPhone and – using “digital touch” – send something as personal as their heartbeat. Apple Watch has also introduced comprehensive health and fitness apps. “Apple introduced the world to several category-defining products: the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad,” says Tim Cook, the organisation’s CEO. “Now, once again, it’s poised to captivate the world with a revolutionary product that can enrich people’s lives. It’s the most personal product we’ve ever made.” Jony Ive, Apple’s Senior Vice-president of Design, says the Apple Watch incorporates an entirely new user interface and blurs the boundary between physical objects and touch. “We’ve created an entire range of products that enable unparalleled personalisation,” he notes. The digital crown on the watch also serves as the home button and a convenient way to access Siri. The Retina display on the device features “force touch”, a technology which senses the difference between a tap and a press, providing a new way to quickly and easily access controls within apps. The Apple Watch also introduces the “taptic engine” and a built-in speaker which, together, discreetly enable an entirely new vocabulary of alerts and notifications that can be both heard and felt. Apple custom-designed its own S1 System in Package to miniaturise an entire computer architecture onto a single chip. In addition, the watch features Wi-Fi 802,11 b/g and Bluetooth 4.0 to pair seamlessly with an iPhone. Apple Watch comes in three distinct collections — Apple Watch, Apple Watch

Sport and Apple Watch Edition — available in 38 mm or 42 mm. Enclosures are crafted from custom alloys of polished or space black stainless steel, space gray or silver anodised aluminium and 18ct rose or yellow gold. Apple has also created an entire range of watch straps: the high-performance elastomer Sport Band, the Milanese Loop in a flexible magnetic stainless steel mesh, the Leather Loop in soft, quilted leather which conceals magnets for quick fastening and adjustment, the leather Modern Buckle, which closes with a solid metal clasp, the leather Classic Buckle and the stainless steel Link Bracelet. The charging system combines Apple’s MagSafe technology with inductive charging for a quick connection that snaps into place. Apple Watch comes with 11 watch faces, ranging from the traditional analogue to the dynamic timelapse face, the astronomy face with its interactive, real-time 3D model of the earth, sun, moon and planets and the solar face, a contemporary sundial. Smart replies and dictation allow the wearer to respond quickly to messages and with handoff, they can start a message on an Apple Watch and transition to an iPhone. The device shows current location, stock tickers, a calendar and an app designed to provide metrics for a dedicated workout session. Apple Watch uses the accelerometer, a built-in heart rate sensor, GPS and Wi-Fi from the wearer’s iPhone. The device will be available in early 2015 and will be compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus running the latest version of iOS 8. – Rapaport

Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair The 33rd Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, the world’s largest timepiece event, ended on 7 September with more than 19 000 buyers, up 2% over the previous year. Buyers from a number of key and emerging markets recorded significant growth, including the UK (23%), France (14%), Germany (7%), the Chinese mainland (8%), India (37%), Korea (30%) and Thailand (28%). The fair, staged at the Hong Kong Con-

vention & Exhibition Centre, is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers’ Association and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries. “The Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair is the largest show of its kind in the world and attracts buyers from around the globe year after year,” says HKTDC Deputy Executive

Director Benjamin Chau. “Developing original designs and promoting brands are still the way to go and Hong Kong’s excellent watch and clock products are well placed to capture the opportunities. The highly acclaimed Salon de TE returned after its début last year and once again showcased a fine selection of exquisite watches that attracted buyers attention.”

First Texas-Israel Diamond Show The first Texas-Israel Diamond Show, which took place on 29 and 30 September in San Antonio, was an exciting event for both sides. The show, sponsored by the Texas Jewelers’ Association (TJA) and the Israel Diamond Institute (IDI), was an unprecedented opportunity for Israeli diamond exporters and Texas jewellers to meet face to face and do business. The show was held in conjunction with the TJA 2014 Convention and was the first time that jewellers in Texas and the surrounding states were offered diamonds directly from the source. The event showcased 28 leading diamond companies from Israel, offering stones in every

size, shape, colour and price point in both loose diamonds and luxury jewellery. The show was timed to enable local jewellers to stock up on diamonds before the holiday season. The event also offered ample opportunities for after-hours and informal networking between vendors and buyers. The IDI-sponsored gala dinner on 28 September was a highlight of the TJA Convention, and was followed by a festive Texas-Israel barbecue, featuring the best of Texan and Israeli cuisine. “The USA is our largest market and we were happy to see that diamond jewellery sales are on the rise. We chose to hold the first Israel Dia-

mond Show there because we believe in the vitality of the Texan market,” says Nissim Palomo, IDI Chief Marketing Officer. “We had to limit the number of companies due to a lack of space, but many more showed interest.” TJA New Member Manager Rex Solomon says: “We were thrilled by the response we received from jewellers in Texas. I’m especially delighted with the number of new TJA members who’ve joined our association and who attended the IDI Trunk Show. This event drew interest from a large number of Texan retailers who recognised the advantage of having so many diamond vendors in one place.”

Petra recovers 232ct diamond Petra Diamonds recovered a 232,08ct D type II white diamond at Cullinan mine. The stone is of exceptional size and clarity, according to the company, and is yet another very large, high-quality diamond recovered at that mine. In February, Petra sold a 29,6ct blue diamond from the mine for US$25,6 million (or

US$862 780 per carat). In June, the company recovered a 122,5ct blue diamond, which is currently for sale. Petra intends to offer the recently discovered diamond for sale in the second quarter of its fiscal year and will notify the market once a date has been finalised. – Rapaport

Jacob & Co’s annual exhibition hosted in Monte Carlo

“This year’s exhibition was by far our most successful to date. We couldn’t have imagined how much the beautiful surroundings of the Hotel Hermitage would add to the experience,” says founder and Chairman of Jacob & Co, Jacob Arabo. “We’re delighted with the overall outcome of our time in Monte Carlo and are very much looking forward to returning there in years to come to share again collections with our clients and new friends.”

Luxury timepiece and jewellery house Jacob & Co enjoyed great success with its annual summer exhibition of rare high jewellery and timepieces in Monte Carlo. The exhibition, which was open to the public from 5-23 August, launched with a private gala event for 500 guests at the historic Hotel Hermitage overlooking the Monte Carlo marina. The Salle Belle Époque ballroom provided an ideal setting for the exposition of extraordinary jewellery collections from around the world and critically acclaimed timepieces from the company’s Geneva, Switzerland watch enterprise. Loyal clients, new customers and global VIPS gathered throughout the event to view the celebrated collections.

BRAND HISTORY

The actual products employ a wide range of techniques and materials that only some pen manufacturers possess to enhance the body of the pen. These include the 5th-century process of die-casting, deep-drawing, low-relief engraving, hand-etching, enamelling, fretwork to create pleasant colour contrasts and traditional brushpolishing for the finish. The fountain pen became an accessory which made a fashion statement. Thanks to its colourful design and the special jeweller’s technique for which the brand is renowned, the pens have distinctive features, such as the octagonal shape of the rotating sphere at the tip, precious metals such as gold and silver, the inclusion of gems and even celluloid (the most distinctive material used by the brand), as well as galalith. The Montegrappa range is divided into two families: the regular range is composed of glamorous accessories that can be utilitarian, in that they make the daily task of writing more enjoyable, while the limited editions are a blend of craftsmanship and beauty inspired by the passion of creativity. The writing instruments of today are the eventual development of the reed and quill pens, utilitarian in that they were used for daily tasks. Historically, refill quill pens and dip pens were used. In the dip pen, the nib was metal and had capillary channels, rather like a fountain pen. These pens were mounted in a holder generally made of wood, but it had no ink reservoir. It had to be repeatedly recharged with ink while the user was drawing or writing. It still has certain advantages over a fountain pen: for example, it can be used with waterproof pigmented inks such as India or acrylic inks, which are used in illustrative calligraphy and comics. However, it was the process of dipping, which could result in “blobs” of ink splattering a page, that in time led to an inspiration. American Lewis Edson Waterman was so annoyed at losing a business contract because of a rather messy document that he was prompted to invent a fountain pen with a reservoir which has a feed. After his death, his improvement was expanded aggressively by his nephew and its invention played a vital role in the development of the industry. Montegrappa has played its own part in the history of the 20th century for signing important documents: Italian King Victor Emmanuel II and dictator Benito Mussolini both used its pens. In later decades, Russian President Boris Yeltsin symbolically gave his power to his successor, Vladimir Putin, in 2000 by handing him his Montegrappa pen.

Mightier than the sword “The pen is mightier than the sword” is an adage which has been attributed to many personalities over the centuries. One was Thomas Jefferson who, in a letter dated 1792, wrote: “Go on then doing with your pen what at other times was done with the sword.”

Claiming to be the oldest manufacturer of writing instruments is the Italian brand Montegrappa. The heart of the brand is its “Italianness”, which is hardly surprising. Still situated today in the historic building of its birth on the banks of the River Brenta in the affluent town of Bassano del Grappa – from which it obviously takes its name – in the north of Italy, the brand was founded in 1912, initially as a manufacturer of gold nib and fountain pens during a turbulent period in the country’s history. It was a by-product of the region’s social mores, as it made the transition from the 19th to the 20th century with changes in working conditions, moving from the agrarian to the urban modus vivendi. Fortuitously, the brand benefited from a pool of talented local craftsmen, a workforce able to produce finely crafted objects with style, panache and their drive to achieve excellence. The product was originally named Elmo and the aim was to produce a finely wrought product with a certain flair. The Bassano factory was in a key position during World War I, as many soldiers used Elmo pens when writing letters to their families back home. Among them were two great future nov-

14

elists – Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos – both of whom were volunteer ambulance drivers at the front. They were known to have used these pens, making them a part of the history of an important decade of the 20th century.

In the 1930s the company blossomed, enjoying a golden era at the height of the public’s taste for luxury goods. The fountain pen had replaced dipping pens. The house of Bassano, known for its creativity, enhanced its pens by using a variety of colours and materials, while the Italian heritage added a distinctive style.

Innovative tools and equipment on display This year’s Jewellex Africa, Africa’s premier jewellery and watch showcase, took place from 2-4 August at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg and saw a number of innovative tools and equipment on display. Performance you can count on This year, Innov-x Africa displayed the Olympus Innov-X XRF series. Within seconds, it provides alloy chemistry and carat classification with one non-destructive, non-intrusive test. “With the current high value of gold, quantifying its fineness and purity is more critical than ever,” says Brett Holdstock of Innov-x Africa. “Whether importing precious metals, selling or producing jewellery, fabricating metal or recycling scrap metal, you need a fast, highly accurate way to determine caratage [gold content] for quality control, pricing and usage purposes.” Furthermore,

The PUK precision welding device, displayed by Cape Watch Tools & Jewellery Supplies, is a compact and versatile TIG impulse welder with which fine and minute welds can be carried out under a microscope. The operating principles and spectrum of possible applications are very close to those of laser welding. This similarity means that the exact positioning of small, stable spotwelds or welds in hard-to-reach or deeplying positions poses no problem. In contrast to soldering, the area of the piece affected by heat is very small when working with the PUK – so small, in fact, that problem-free welds adjacent to precious stones or pearls can be done with ease. Even the finest welds can be undertaken. Utilising the welding microscope, handling pieces of work right down to 0,2 mm is now possible. As it did last year, his family business, Raffaele D’Amato Jewellers, will again add sparkle to the sixth annual Carpe Diem School Gourmets and Gourmands with a regal necklace befitting an empress – linked perfectly to the event’s theme, “Antiqua Roma”. Nunes has always believed in enhancing the quality of life of those in the local community, especially the children. Raffaele D’Amato Jewellers subsequently donated a diamond to be auctioned off during Carpe Diem School’s premier fund-raising event in 2013, Gourmets and Gourmands. The sublime pear-shaped diamond, with a total carat weight of approximately 1,06, colour grade G and clarity grade SI3, was auctioned off for R40 000. Nunes then donated a second diamond to be auctioned off at the event. This stone had a total carat weight of approximately 0,56, colour grade K and clarity grade SI3. “At Raffaele D’Amato Jewellers, the art of knowing precious stones, eternal and

divine, is based on decades of expertise,” explains Nunes. “The designs fuse the elegance of the precious stones used with iconic contemporary designs.” The auction of these exceptional diamonds was a great boon for the pupils of Carpe Diem School, as the money raised through them was allocated to the development of a therapy room. When Nunes decided to design a necklace to be auctioned off at the 2014 Gourmets and

Gourmands, he had no idea that the piece would encompass so much of his team’s creativity and craftsmanship. The timeless and inimitable design of the necklace is matched with stunning tanzanite and diamonds. Every ounce of the 18ct white gold, excluding the clasp, is handcrafted. The piece is adorned with 1,95ct tanzanite and 1,47ct diamonds. The retail value of the necklace is approximately R95 000. “The inspiration for the design was amplified by the antique Roman theme of the event and, of course, my Italian background,” says Nunes. “It had to be something exquisite, exuding Italian flair.” Raffaele D’Amato Jewellers was originally established in 1957 in George by master watchmakers Raffaele D’Amato and his son, Deryck Nunes. D’Amato, who was an Italian prisoner of war, came to SA to make a better life for himself and, later, his family. Nunes opened the first store in Paarl and later joined his parents in George. Today the tradition of superb craftsmanship is continued by Michél Nunes, third-generation master jeweller and designer of note. Since the death of his father in 2008, he has been supported in the business by his multi-talented mother, Marlene. Nunes joined the business in 1989 after completing his BA Creative Arts degree in jewellery design at Stellenbosch University, followed by his FGA in coloured gems and diamonds from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, as well as lecturing in jewellery design at Stellenbosch University. In 1990 he won the Elegant Man of the Year design award for his “Elegant Time” brooch and was one of five designers assigned by De Beers to design for the Just for You “Woman With Style” competition. Jewellery design is an everchanging and expanding art form and Nunes maintains an active interest in current design and gemmology developments. He is a member of the Diamond Dealers’ Club of South Africa.

BRAND MANAGEMENT

Ball Watch Company now in SA August saw the local launch of Ball Watch Company timepieces by Luxco Importers. Since 1891, Ball Watch has been producing mechanical timepieces that comply with the most stringent criteria for precision, quality and reliability. As a pioneer of chronometric standards and with a rich past closely associated with the history of American railroads, Ball Watch remains one of the most respected and best-established watch brands in the USA. After presenting a chronometer certified water-resistant to the extreme depth of 3 000 m in 2011, Ball Watch has now unveiled a major technological innovation in the design of diving watches with the new Engineer Hydrocarbon Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU). The NEDU is the unit of the US Navy responsible for rolling out operational diving and decompression rules for the country’s armed forces. It assesses the systems and procedures involved in surviving hyperbaric and diving environments. Applying the same principle of “Safety First” adopted from its very beginnings by Ball Watch for its timekeepers, the NEDU’s experiments have enabled new procedures and equipments to be developed to increase diving safety. In particular, the NEDU established the decompression timetables which are a vital reference for all divers. In the same way, at the end of the 19th century, Ball Watch played a pioneering role in watchmaking by laying down chronometric standards used as the basis for today’s standards. Ball Watch has therefore dedicated to the NEDU this new model, which is a powerful chronograph that is both sporty and stylish. All aspects of this timepiece have been designed for use by

tion process for powerful luminous paint on the ceramic bezel indications. The water-resistance of this model is guaranteed to a depth of 600 m, thanks to the rugged construction of its case, which is 17,3 mm at its thickest for a diameter of 42 mm. The chronograph functions are also fully operable underwater, thanks to the water-resistant design of the pushers. The case-back is stamped with a diver’s motif echoing NEDU’s official emblem. A world first in watchmaking, the automatic helium release valve has been directly incorporated into the crown. This patented Ball innovation has eradicated a potential surface liable to warp under the effects of water pressure, thereby improving the chronograph’s water-resistance even further. The crown itself is fitted with a patented protection system that is used on all Engineer

professional divers, for whom every second may be of crucial importance. Particular attention has been paid to the rotating bezel and its ergonomic contours, ensuring precise handling, even when wearing diving gloves. The bezel’s unidirectional rotation avoids the dire consequences that could result from any accidental movement when counting down time underwater. Designed in chromed pure black ceramic, the bezel is exceptionally resistant to corrosion, scratches and ultraviolet rays. Additionally, the numerals and gradation have been oversized to make them immediately legible. A pioneer in ceramic processing, Ball Watch again uses its innovative applica-

Hydrocarbon models. The heart of the watch houses the benchmark chronograph calibre with a Ball RR1402-C automatic movement that can measure and indicate a lapse of time of up to 12 hours. To remain visible even in the darkness of the deep, the dial’s indexes, hands and pushers are naturally fitted with luminous micro-tubes of 3H gas. This state-of-the-art Swiss technology, the iconic signature of all Ball watches, requires no external source of light or energy, while being up to 100 times more efficient than conventional luminous paints. The Engineer Hydrocarbon NEDU is also protected from shocks with a force of up to 7 500 G and magnetic fields to an intensity of 4 800 A/m. Apart from the standard rubber strap used on all diving watches, it is fitted with a stainless steel and titanium bracelet, with Ball’s patented triple-folding buckle.

Brand honours motor-racing A special Porsche limited edition of 919 professional timepieces was unveiled by Genevabased brand Chopard to celebrate Porsche’s return to Le Mans. Named the Superfast Porsche by Chopard, this flyback chronograph is based on the Superfast’s chronograph’s bodywork. The dial echoes various details of the Porsche 919 Hybrid which competed in the Le Mans LMP Endurance World championship in France in June this year. It is stamped with the 919 logo at 9 o’clock. The 24-hour endurance race was the 82nd running of this event, won by the No 2 Audi driven by Swiss-born Marcel Faisler. Besides marking the

22

return of the Porsche family to this legendary championship, it also reinforced Chopard’s commitment to automotive motorsport. The timepiece is presented in steel and the dial indications are hours, minutes, small seconds, date, chronograph seconds hand, 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The chronometer is certified by the COSC. Entirely designed, developed and produced in-house by Chopard, it has a mechanical self-winding movement with an approximately 60-hour power reserve and features bridges with a unique see-through engine finish. The chronograph movement is fully integrated and features a column wheel.

Chopard is a privately owned company producing luxury products of jewellery, watches and accessories. Its relationship with motorsport dates back to 1988, when it partnered with the classic Mille Miglia car race in Italy. The brand has maintained the tradition of developing a newedition sports watch collection every year. The watch brand is also renowned for its Happy Diamonds theme. As of this year, its watches are presented in six product families. Chopard is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, an organisation formed to reinforce consumers’ compliance in the jewellery industry.

With the earrings clustered together, the piece is distinctly retro. There are also far daintier pieces, and others which are exuberant and almost “bib-like”. As Friedman points out, a woman who wears one of Travel broadens the mind, as the saying goes – and for Kevin Friedman of brand Frankli Wild, his travels are reflected in his work. He’s visited 40 countries in the past two years and his exposure to different cultures has changed his perceptions, as well as his approach to designing jewellery. “You can’t help but be inspired by your environment when you’re in foreign surroundings,” he says. Bleu becomes Blanc Inventiveness and innovation, as well as passion, are part of Cartier’s credo. Ballon Bleu de Cartier was added to its watch family seven years ago and has been a spectacular success. Always produced in silver or gold, no stainless steel models have been made. Ballon Bleu had many unconventional features, including its shape, which was not quite round, but had a curved bottom and top, its crown set with the blue sapphires which gave the design its name. It came in a variety of styles. Encouraged by its success, the prestigious brand now presents a variation on this theme. Ballon Blanc, in an 18ct, rhodium-plated 30 mm case of white gold, has a ribbon of five rows of brilliant-cut diamonds nestling grace-

24

fully in the curve of the dial. The blued steel hands are sword-shaped. Instead of the blue sapphire on the crown at 4 o’clock, this is set with a flash of diamonds, the rounded sapphire crystal amplifying the time. The bracelet consists of five rows of cut (or smooth) diamonds. The movement is quartz and the watch is water-resistant to 30 m. There is also a version in 18ct pink gold set with 0,70ct of diamonds, the crown with 0,20ct, and a bracelet in matching pink gold. The Ballon Blanc is a jewellery watch which offers a fresh approach to the Ballon Bleu. It has the same pebble-shaped case, yet creates a new face for itself. It is a blend of the past and the future and combines the arts of jewellery and watchmaking.

BRAND MANAGEMENT

Nixon and the S Keren Watch Group join forces Nixon, a premium watch and accessory company, joined forces with the Cape Town-based S Keren Watch Group in March this year. “It was mutually agreed that with the support of the S Keren Watch Group, this partnership would elevate Nixon to becoming a brand leader in the southern African jewellery, fashion, lifestyle and sports retail market,” says the S Keren Watch Group’s Andrew Roberts. “Founded in 1998 in Encinitas, California, USA,

Nixon focuses on making the little stuff better,” explains the brand. It began with a small line of teamdesigned, custom-built watches sold exclusively in specialty boardsport and fashion retailers. It has since grown into a brand sold in many top-line jewellery outlets. Currently distributed in over 90 countries, Nixon’s product range has grown to include select soft and leather goods, custom audio products and more.

A bold new approach A few years ago, Swiss brand Movado boldly decided to adopt a fresh, modern approach at an entry-level price for a design that would attract new consumers to its offerings. Thus the Movado Bold collection was born, which maintains the legendary single dot in the 12 o’clock position (high noon). With bright colour accents and new textures, in black and TR90 composition material or stainless steel cases and matching coated leather straps, the collection was an immediate success, particularly in the USA, where the first models to come off the production line were completely sold out. This left no supplies available for other countries. “It’s not part of the Movado range – it’s an accessory. Its major success was a portent of Movado Bold’s future,” says Darrell Lazarus, Divisional Manager of distributor Premier Time Corporation. The production problem is now a thing of the past, so the new-look

Movado Bold is available in SA and Lazarus is confident it will entice savvy, young, fashionconscious consumers. Movado Bold retains the DNA of its famous brand, as evidenced in the iconic details and aesthetic approach (the single dot and no numbers), which were influenced by the functionality of the Bauhaus movement of the early to mid-20th century. The design is still considered one of the most important examples of the Bauhaus style in the USA and is integral to the Movado company image. The new collection is priced from R5 000-R8 000 and includes exciting, new materials such as black or white TR90 polymer link bracelets. Its dials have new textures, a sleek metallic sheen or

Madison Avenue in New York City houses many iconic brands – and they now have new neighbours at No 50, the first Seiko boutique in the USA, which houses Seiko timepieces such as Astron and Grand Seiko. This was announced in mid-October by President and CEO of the Seiko Watch Company, Shinji Hattori. The boutique will also unveil collections never seen before in the USA, such as Galante, Credor and the Perspex collections. The opening event was attended by 150 high-profile guests, including Seiko partner and

New titanium bracelets on masculine models and cushion-shaped designs which feature inner rotating reflector rings are among the styling details. Even special editions are included, as are matte aluminium cases in cool new colours and sporty silicon straps. All are waterresistant to a minimum of 30 m and feature Swiss quartz movements and scratch-resistant K1 crystals. The word “movado” means “always in motion” – an apt description of both the company and its products. Established in 1881, the company is located at La Chaux-deFonds, with its headquarters in the renowned watchmaking region of the Swiss Jura.

LITTLE GEMS

ily” would be a good description – but it can change colour if treated, according to popular belief. For years it has been coveted by royalty and ecclesiastics. It was known as the stone of cardinals and often used in bishops’ rings, while Russian empress Catherine the Great was said to have sent thousands of miners to look for amethysts in the Urals, where it was mined. Some amethysts pale almost to colourlessness in daylight. The reason for this is not yet known, but radium radiation can return them to their original colour. This can happen if the stones are exposed to certain lights or sudden changes of temperature. Other gemstones in varying hues of purple include sapphire, spinel, tanzanite and tourmaline. The colour range includes violet, heliotrope, lavender, magenta, mauve, mulberry or even a reddish-purple – and in the case of our diamond, pink. It is a colour best set in platinum or silver. In the traditional meaning of colours, purple is related to imagination and spirituality. It symbolises power, nobility, leadership and ambition. A survey has revealed that 75% of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to any other colour – and that includes my youngest great- grand - daughter Gabriella, aged four. In terms of personality, if you have a preference for purple or violet, it is thought to mean that you are sensitive, compassionate, understanding and supportive of others. You are a free spirit (like Gabriella) who dislikes being part of a crowd and doesn’t like to copy others – or have others copy you. In ancient times, a dye obtained from the mucous secretions of certain predatory sea snails was named royal purple, Tyrian purple or even Tyrian red. It was reddish-purple and came in various shades, did not fade easily as a result of weathering or sunlight and was prized by the Romans as an item of luxury trade. A similar species of sea snail is found today on the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa. To conclude on a whimsical note, in 1905, the poet Gelett Burgess wrote the following clerihew about the colour purple: “I never saw a purple cow. I never hope to see one; But I can tell you anyhow I’d rather see than be one.”

The colour purple Purple is a colour of many light and dark shades, most strikingly in the quartz family – but it is not usually associated with diamonds. Yet an internally flawless, vivid purple-pink, pear-shaped gem of 8,41ct will appear on auction in Hong Kong this month, worth an estimated US$12,8-$15,4 million. Alice Weil explores the myths and fascination of this colour.

28

It was discovered in the 19th century and is located in geode rocks, the most significant deposits being in South America (Brazil and Uruguay), with the third most significant supply in Madagascar. The Brazilian treasure trove yielded a piece weighing 200 g which is on display in the Washington Museum. Amethyst is a sensitive purple colour – an “extravagance in violet of the quartz fam-

Sotheby’s believes this is the most eceptional diamond of this colour to appear on auction in recent years and ranks among the most durable gems ever seen on the block. The stone was cut from a 19,54ct rough which was mined by De Beers, with the final cutting completed in New York. Vibrant and concentrated in colour, it is expected to command the highest price per carat for a pinkcoloured diamond. It has been graded by the GIA as “fancy vivid”, the highest grade for a coloured stone. Ever since the first discovery of pink diamonds in Indian mines centuries ago, these coloured gems have been coveted by rulers and prized by connoisseurs. The rich deposits of famed Golconda mines yielded the Daryai-Noor, a shimmering, pale pink diamond of approximately 185ct which was table-cut, its pavilion consisting of large step-facets. Its present location is uncertain. Many believe it to be in a vault of Sonali Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh, while others say it can be found among the Iranian Crown Jewels in Tehran. But not many ordinary mortals can aspire to owning a gem of the calibre being auctioned. So the next best thing in purple would be an amethyst, a gemstone that has been revered through the ages.
