Eivissa

La ciudad de Ibiza, “Eivissa” en catalán, es una de las más antiguas de Europa. Fundada en el 654 a.C., creció hasta ser una importante ciudad fortificada y con el tiempo se convirtió en la capital de las islas Pitiusas (islas de pinos), Ibiza y Formentera. Hoy en día viven más de 40.000 personas en Eivissa, lo que supone un tercio de la población de la isla. La ciudad antigua, Dalt Vila, se asienta firmemente por encima de los tejados de Eivissa, única, protegida de ataques piratas por siete baluartes, inexpugnable y aún hoy el alma de la ciudad. En el punto más alto

se alza la catedral, iluminada por la noche y visible desde muy lejos. La fortificación fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1999. Los antiguos muros rodean un laberinto de casas y callejuelas estrechas y serpenteantes, aún hoy un pequeño pueblo en medio de una ciudad.

Unas 700 personas viven aquí su vida mediterránea: ropa tendida, parloteo de mujeres, juegos infantiles y por todos los rincones ese jugueteo único de luces y sombras. Cada año tiene lugar la Feria Medieval y el Festival de Jazz con este hermoso telón de fondo. Los ávidos por la cultura pueden disfrutar del Museo Arqueológico o del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Desde 1938 Eivissa es gobernada de nuevo desde el fuerte, ya que el Ayuntamiento se encuentra dentro de este barrio medieval. Hubo un tiempo en que la gente vivía únicamente dentro de las fortificaciones, hasta que las casitas blancas aparecieron más allá de las murallas y formaron la ciudad antigua de hoy, con su aire romántico. A los pies de la entrada principal a Dalt Vila se encuentra el encantador Mercado Viejo, un mercado ibicenco de verduras rodeado por cafés y bonitas tiendas. La zona del puerto, La Marina, late con las corrientes de turistas y por la noche con la marcha de las fiestas. Por toda la zona tiendas, puestos de souvenirs y restaurantes

atraen a los visitantes. La gente se sienta en las terrazas, fascinada por las bellezas nocturnas que pasean. Lo travestido y lo chic se mezcla en excéntricas comparsas que presentan las famosas discotecas de Ibiza. El Paseo Vara de Rey supone una atractiva frontera entre el barrio histórico y el moderno distrito de

Eixample. Muy cerca de toda esta actividad, en Puig des Molins, se descubrió una necrópolis enterrada, un enorme cementerio de la antigüedad que contiene unas 4.000 tumbas. Es la excavación más importante de la isla. Enfrente de la ciudad antigua centellea el puerto de recreo de Marina Botafoch. Unos 450 yates se balancean en el agua frente a boutiques de marca y restaurantes para gourmets. Son posiciones privilegiadas con unas vistas espectaculares, especialmente cuando hay los fuegos artificiales durante las

festividades. Un pequeño ferry une el paseo marítimo con sus puertos deportivos Marina Botafoch y Marina Ibiza con el puerto viejo de Ibiza ciudad, al pie de Dalt Vila. En el exclusivo barrio detrás de Marina Botafoch se puede visitar la legendaria discoteca Pacha y el Casino de Ibiza, que está ubicado en el Ibiza Gran Hotel. A las afueras de Ibiza las playas urbanas son muy agradables, Figueretes al suroeste y la más tranquila Talamanca en el noreste.

Ibiza Town, “Eivissa” in Catalan, is one of Europe’s oldest towns. Founded in 654 B.C. by the Carthaginians, it grew to an important fortress town and eventually became the capital of the Pituses (‘pine islands’), Ibiza and Formentera. Today more than 40,000 people live in Eivissa, that is roughly 1/3 of the whole island’s population. The old town Dalt Vila sits firmly above the rooftops of Eivissa, protected from pirates by seven bastions, unique, impregnable and still the soul of the town. At the highest point stands the

cathedral, lit up at night and visible from far away. The fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Antique walls surround a labyrinth of houses and narrow, winding alleyways. A small village in the middle of a city still today. Around 700 people live their Mediterranean life here: washing lines, chattering housewives, laughing children and everywhere this unique game of light and shadow. Every year the Medieval Festival and the Jazz Festival take place against this authentic backdrop. Culture vultures can also appreciate the Archaeological Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum. Since 1938 Eivissa is again governed from the fort, making the Town Hall a part of this Medieval quarter.

Once, people lived inside the fortifications only. Then the white-washed houses grew beyond the gates, and formed the old town of today with its romantic flair.

In front of the Fortress entrance is the charming Mercado Viejo, an Ibicencan vegetable market surrounded by cafés and pretty shops.

The harbour area La Marina pulsates with streams of tourists and, at night-time, a wild party life. The entire old town is full of boutiques, souvenir stands and restaurants enticing visitors. People sit in bars, fascinated by the “beautiful people” of the night who pass by. Travesty and chic merge in the eccentric parades to present Ibiza’s famous nightclubs. The Boulevard Vara de Rey forms a glamorous border between the historical quarter and the modern district Eixample. Close to this hustle and bustle, at the Puig des Molins, an underground necropolis was discovered; an enormous graveyard of antiquity containing around 4,000 graves. It is the island’s most important site. Opposite the old town glistens the swanky yacht-harbour Marina

Prime positions with priceless views – especially when there are fireworks during city holidays. A small ferry links the Paseo Marítimo and its yacht harbours with the old port of Ibiza city, at the foot of Dalt Vila. In the exclusive district behind Marina Botafoch one can visit the legendary Disco Pacha and Ibiza’s Casino which is located in the Ibiza Gran Hotel. On the outskirts of Eivissa the town beaches bring much joy – Figueretes in the southwest and the calmer Talamanca in the northeast.

Museum zeitgenössischer Kunst. Seit 1938 wird Eivissa wieder von der Festung aus regiert, das Rathaus ist Teil der mittelalterlichen Szenerie. Einst lebte man nur innerhalb der Burgmauern, dann wuchsen die weiß gekalkten Häuser über die Tore hinaus, bildeten die heutige Altstadt mit ihrem romantischen Flair. Vor dem Festungstor verführt der Mercado Viejo, ein ibizenkischer Gemüsemarkt, umgeben von Cafés und schmucken Geschäften. Im Hafenviertel La Marina pulsieren die Touristenströme, tobt nachts das schrille Partyleben. Überall locken Boutiquen, Souvenir-Stände und Restaurants. Man sitzt in den Bars, ist fasziniert von den Schönheiten der Nacht, die vorbeiziehen. Travestie und Chic vereinen sich zu einer exzentrischen Parade, präsentieren die berühmten Clubs Ibizas. Der Boulevard Vara de Rey verläuft als glamouröse Grenze zwischen den historischen Vierteln und dem modernen Stadtteil Eixample. Unweit des geschäftigen Treibens, am Puig des Molins, wurde eine unterirdische Totenstadt entdeckt. Ein gewalti-

ger Friedhof der Antike, rund 4.000 Gräber umfassend. Der bedeutendste Ausgrabungsort der Insel. Gegenüber der Altstadt glänzt die mondäne Marina Botafoch. Rund 450 Yachten schaukeln vor Edelboutiquen und Gourmet-Restaurants. Wahre Logenplätze mit kostbarem Blick – vor allem, wenn es bei Feierlichkeiten ein Feuerwerk zu bewundern gibt. Eine kleine Fähre verbindet den Paseo Marítimo und die Yachthäfen von Marina Botafoch und Marina Ibiza mit dem alten Hafen von Ibiza-Stadt, am Fuße von Dalt Vila.

Im exklusiven Stadtviertel hinter Marina Botafoch besucht man die legendäre Disco Pacha und das Casino von Ibiza. das sich im Ibiza Gran Hotel befindet. An der Peripherie Eivissas tragen die Stadtstrände zur Lebensfreude bei – Figueretes im Südwesten und der ruhigere Talamanca im Nordosten.

Sant Josep

Sant Josep es el municipio más grande de Ibiza, lleno de perfiles diferentes y de naturaleza impresionante. Son muchos los mitos

y leyendas en torno a Es Vedrà, la roca gigantesca al Suroeste de la isla que se eleva 385 metros sobre el mar. Hay excursiones en barco que se acercan todo lo posible a las empinadas paredes, que devuelven el eco de las llamadas de los pájaros. Vista desde Cala d’Hort, Es Vedrà parece aún más espectacular y abrumadora. Aquí, encima de la bahía, se encuentra la Torre del Pirata, Es Savinar, construida en el siglo XVIII para avisar de la cercanía de piratas. Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort, la excavación arqueológica de un asentamiento Púnico-Romano, también es de importancia histórica. Las primeras piedras fueron depositadas en el siglo V antes de Cristo. Desde Cap des Jueu hay caminos que llevan hasta

Sa Pedrera (Atlantis), extrañas formaciones rocosas que dan la impresión de ser paredes semihundidas. Sin embargo, se trata de cortes hechos en la roca para sacar grandes bloques, seguramente para construir la fortaleza de Eivissa. Es más fácil llegar hasta allí en barco desde Las Salinas o Sant Antoni. Siguiendo la costa hacia el Norte se pueden encontrar bellas calas, desarrolladas por el turismo pero aún encantadoras: Cala Vadella con sus pintorescas casetas de pescadores, Cala Tarida con su larga y hermosa playa, escarpada y de aguas cristalinas. Poco antes de Sant Antoni, Cala Compte y Cala

La Ibiza ancestral se despierta en Sant Agustí des Vedrà: muros azotados por el clima, magníficas fincas, tabernas y galerías se aglutinan sobre una colina. El pueblo más antiguo de la isla, o al menos eso dicen. También merece la pena un viaje a Es Cubells: desde aquí se puede ver un amplio panorama de mar y costa rocosa, con pequeñas tabernas escondidas llenas de encanto. Más hacia el Este está Cala Jondal, donde muchos yates descansan, en parte por los exclusivos restaurantes de la playa.

Aquellos que buscan paz y silencio adoran los rojos acantilados de la bahía de Sa Caleta. Este fue el hogar del primer asentamiento fenicio. El Poblado Fenicio, declarado Patri-

monio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, aún muestra restos de los muros. En el punto más sureño de Ibiza, las lagunas salineras centellean mientras flamencos rosas tuercen sus delicados cuellos. Ses Salines es una reserva natural, y fuente de ingresos a la vez. La sal es símbolo de riqueza, aún hoy. Esto se demuestra en la Playa de ses Salines, frecuentada por ricos y famosos. Sant Josep is Ibiza’s largest district, where impressions are manifold and nature is breathtaking. Myths and legends surround Es Vedrà, the gigantic rock in the southwest, which rises 385 metres above the sea. Boat tours go right up to the steep walls, which echo with the screeching of birds. Seen from Cala

d’Hort, Es Vedrà appears daunting and even more spectacular from above the bay. There stands the “Pirate tower”, Es Savinar, built in the 18th century to report on approaching pirates. Ses Païses

de Cala d’Hort, the archaeological excavation of a Roman-Punic settlement, is also of historical importance. The first stones were laid in the 5th century before Christ. From the Cap des Jueu, paths lead down to Sa Pedrera (Atlantis) – bizarre shore formations create the impression of sunken walls. But it is here where thick blocks were cut out of the rock, presumably to build the stronghold in Eivissa. It is easiest to get here by boat from Las Salinas or Sant Antoni. Following the coastline northbound, you can find delightful coves, touched by tourism, but charming all the same: Cala Vadella with its colourful fishermen’s huts, Cala Tarida with its beautiful beach, long

and craggy with crystal clear waters. Shortly before Sant Antoni, Cala Comte and Cala Bassa are popular beach destinations. Or how about a mountain hike? The village Sant Josep de Sa Talaia leans against Ibiza’s highest elevation, the plateau summit Sa Talaia, measuring 475 metres. A hike with stunning views. The markers begin in Sant Josep, which is also well worth seeing, especially the village square with its attractive fortified church. Ancient Ibiza awakens in Sant Agustí des Vedrà: weatherbeaten walls, magnificent fincas, inns and galleries group together on a hill-top. The oldest village on the island, at least that’s what they say. A trip to Es Cubells is also worthwhile: from here you can see a wide panorama of ocean, rocky coast and tucked-away taverns which provide pure pleasure. Further to the east lies Cala Jondal, where many a yacht is anchored, partly due to the exclusive beach restaurants. Those seeking peace and quiet love the red cliffs in the bay of Sa Caleta. This was the home of the first

Phoenician settlers. The Poblat fenici, declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, still shows relics of the walls. At the most southern point of Ibiza, salt plains glisten and pink flamingos bend their necks. Ses Salines is a nature reserve and source of income at the same time. Salt stands for wealth, still today. A point proven at Salinas beach, which is frequented by the rich and famous. You can sit in beach bars amongst the dunes and people watch. Just next to it and comparably beautiful: Es Cavallet, with its nudist beach. Lots of action and parties can be found at the nearby Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza’s newest and largest tourist centre.

vögeln hallt. Auch von der Cala d’Hort aus betrachtet wirkt Es Vedrà gewaltig, noch spektakulärer von oberhalb der Bucht. Dort steht der „Piratenturm“ Es Savinar, erbaut im 18. Jahrhundert zur Meldung nahender Seeräuber. Von historischer Bedeutung ist auch Ses Païses de Cala d’Hort, die Ausgrabungsstätte einer punisch-römischen Siedlung. Ihre ersten Steine legte man im 5. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Am Cap des Jueu führen Pfade hinab nach Sa Pedrera (Atlantis) – bizarre Küstenformationen erwecken den Eindruck versunkener Mauern. Doch hier wurden dicke Blöcke aus dem Fels geschnitten, vermutlich für den Festungsbau in Eivissa. Am besten ist der Platz mit Booten erreichbar, die von Las Salinas und Sant Antoni starten.

Folgt man der Felsküste nach Norden, öffnen sich reizvolle Buchten, touristisch erschlossen,

aber mit Charme. Die Cala Vadella mit ihren bunten Fischerhäusern, die Cala Tarida mit ihrem schönen Strand, lang und zerklüftet, vor glasklarem Wasser. Kurz vor Sant Antoni sind Cala Comte und Cala Bassa beliebte Badeziele. Oder soll es eine Bergtour sein? Der Ort Sant Josep de Sa Talaia lehnt sich an Ibizas höchste Erhebung, das Gipfelplateau des Sa Talaia erreicht 475 Meter. Eine Wanderung mit überwältigenden Aussichten. Die Markierung beginnt in Sant Josep, das auch ein sehenswertes Örtchen ist, vor allem der Dorfplatz mit seiner hübschen Wehrkirche. Das ursprüngliche Ibiza erwacht in Sant Agustí des Vedrà: Verwitterte Mauern, prächtige Fincas, Gaststätten und Galerien gruppieren sich um eine Hügelkuppe. Das älteste Dorf der Insel, so sagt man zumindest. Lohneswert ist auch ein Ausflug nach Es Cubells: Im weiten Panoramablick zeigen sich Meer und Felsküste, versteckte Lokale bieten puren Genuss. Weiter östlich liegt die Cala Jondal, in der manche Yacht ankert, auch wegen der exklusiven

Strandrestaurants. Ruhesuchende lieben die roten Felsen der Bucht von Sa Caleta. Hier war die Heimat der ersten phönizischen Siedler.

Das Poblat fenici, zum Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO erklärt, zeigt noch die Mauerreste. Am südlichsten Zipfel Ibizas glitzern Salzfelder, und rosa Flamingos neigen ihre Hälse: Ses Salines ist Naturreservat und Ertragsquelle zugleich. Salz steht für Reichtum, immer noch. Das zeigt sich am Salinas-Strand, den gerne Prominenz besucht. Man sitzt in Strandbars zwischen den Dünen und lässt die Szene auf sich wirken. Nebenan und vergleichbar schön: Es Cavallet mit seinem FKK-Bereich. Trubel und Partyvergnügen bietet die nahe Playa d’en Bossa, das neueste und größte Touristenzentrum Ibizas.

Sant Antoni

Fueron los romanos quienes descubrieron la bahía de Sant Antoni, la más profunda incisión en la costa ibicenca, que ofrece amplias vistas hacia el mar Mediterráneo occidental. Lo llamaron “Port Magnus”, gran puerto, hecho que aún perdura en el sobrenombre “de Portmany”. Hoy en día hoteles y atracciones turísticas bordean la costa todo a lo largo de un paseo. Hacia el Sur se encuentran las playas urbanas Arenal y Es Pouet. En la Punta des Molí se alza un molino restaurado que se ha convertido en centro cultural

y museo. En la zona norte de la bahía se ha establecido firmemente un lugar de encuentro: la gente se congrega en la Punta de ses Variades, en bares ya famosos como el Café del Mar, para admirar las más bellas puestas de sol de la isla. Más alejadas de la ciudad se esconden románticas bahías rocosas, y el pe-

queño Aquarium Cap Blanc, conocido como “la cueva de las langostas”. En el pasado los pescadores almacenaban sus trofeos allí. Ahora este acuario natural encandila al visitante con espectáculos de luz y música clásica.

Quien busque el “Huevo de Colón” lo encontrará en Sant Antoni: en la rotonda de la entrada principal. Es un emblema de la ciudad en cuyo centro hueco se asienta un modelo de la carabela “Santa María”. El monumento fue erigido en 1992 para conmemorar las celebraciones del 500 aniversario del descubrimiento de Las Américas. Justo detrás está la Plaça de Ses Fonts, un agradable lugar donde pasear, con palmeras, fuentes y bares con terraza. Hacia la derecha se llega hasta el centro histórico de la ciudad, donde las calles peatonales llevan hacia una antigua iglesia fortificada. Los amantes de la noche aprecian el muy británico

West End, donde los bares y discotecas se suceden, llenando las calles de luces y ritmos. Detrás de Sant Antoni, en dirección a Santa Agnès, una señal indica la Cova Santa Agnès. Aquí se halló una capilla subterránea –para rituales precristianos– con reliquias púnicas, romanas y árabes. Otra cueva, bien escondida, se encuentra en Cala Salada: la Cova de Ses Fontanelles, donde hay pinturas rupestres. No está confirmado, pero podrían ser trazos de cazadores prehistóricos o de torres de vigilancia cartaginesas. Más hacia el Norte nos adentramos en la Ibiza auténtica, encantadores pueblos rodeados por una impresionante naturaleza. En febrero Santa Agnès de Corona es un mar de almendros en flor. It was the Romans who discovered the bay of Sant Antoni – the deepest incision into Ibiza’s coastline, giving a wide view onto the western Mediterranean Sea. They called the place “Port Magnus”, great harbour, which is still discernible in the second part of the town’s name, “de Portmany”. Today hotels and tourist attractions line the shore, next to a long promenade for lengthy strolls. Towards the south lie the town beaches Arenal and Es Pouet. At the Punta des Moli stands a restored windmill which has been converted into a cultural centre with a museum. On the northern side of the bay a meeting place has been firmly established: people hang out at the Punta

de ses Variades, in famous bars like the Café del Mar, and applaud the most beautiful sunsets on the island. Further out of town, romantic rocky bays are tucked away – and the little Aquarium Cap Blanc, known as “Lobstercave” by the locals. In the past fishermen stored their catch here. Now the natural aquarium enchants visitors with light shows and classical music. Whoever seeks the „Egg of Colombus“ will find it in Sant Antoni: by the roundabout at the main entrance. It is the town’s landmark and inside its hollow core sits a model of the ship “Santa Maria”. The monument was erected in 1992 to

commemorate the 500year celebrations of the discovery of the Americas. Right behind it is the Plaça de ses Fonts, a pretty place to stroll with palm trees, fountains and street cafés. On the right-hand side you can reach the historical town-centre, where pedestrian streets lead to an old fortified church.

Night owls appreciate the very British West End: bars and pubs, nightclubs and discos line the pavement, filling the streets with lights and beats.

Behind Sant Antoni, in the direction of Santa Agnes, a sign points to Cova Santa Agnes. An underground chapel – for pre-Christian rituals – was found here containing Punic, Roman and Arabic relics. A further cave, well hidden, is near Cala Salada: the Cova de ses Fontanelles, where there are cave paintings. It is not yet confirmed but they may be traces of prehistoric hunters or Carthaginian watchtowers. Further in the North lies the original Ibiza, charming villages surrounded by impressive nature. In February Santa Agnès de Corona is a sea of almond blossom. Hikers and mountain bikers like to tour around Sant Mateu. If you leave Sant Antoni to the South (towards Eivissa) you can find the pottery village Sant

Rafel. It was deemed an “area of cultural value” by the island’s government. Rightly so, because the pottery produced here is amongst the prettiest of Ibiza’s souvenirs.

Es waren die Römer, die Sant Antonis ausladende Bucht entdeckten, den tiefsten Einschnitt in der Küstenlinie Ibizas, der einen weiten Blick freigab auf das westliche Mittelmeer. „Port Magnus“, nannten sie den Ort, großer Hafen, das ist immer noch im Beinamen „de Portmany“ erkennbar. Heute schmiegen sich Hotels und Touristenattraktionen um die Ufer, und eine lange Strandpromenade, die zu Spaziergängen einlädt.

Sie präsentiert, in südlicher Richtung, die Stadtstrände Arenal und Es Pouet. An der Punta des Molí wacht eine restaurierte Mühle über dem Treiben, ein Kulturzentrum mit Museum wurde hier errich-

tet. Auf der nördlichen Seite der Hafenbucht hat sich ein Szenetreff etabliert: Man sitzt an der Punta de ses Variades, in berühmten Bars wie dem Café del Mar, und klatscht zu den schönsten Sonnenuntergängen der Insel. Weiter

stadtauswärts verstecken sich romantische Felsbuchten – und das kleine Aquarium Cap Blanc, bei Einheimischen als „Langustenhöhle“ bekannt. Früher buchteten Fischer hier ihre Fänge ein, jetzt verzaubert das Naturaquarium mit Lichtspielen und klassischer Musik. Wer nach dem „Ei des Kolumbus“ sucht, wird in Sant Antoni fündig: Es ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt und steht an der Haupteinfahrt im Kreisverkehr, mit einem Modell des Schiffes „Santa Maria“ im hohlen Kern. Das Monument wurde 1992 zur 500-Jahr-Feier der Entdeckung Amerikas aufgestellt. Gleich dahinter beginnt die Plaça de ses Fonts, eine hübsche Flaniermeile mit Palmen, Brunnen

und Strassencafes. Zur Rechten gelangt man in den historischen Stadtkern, wo autofreie Gassen um eine alte Wehrkirche führen. Nachtschwärmern gefällt das britisch geprägte West End: Bars und Kneipen, Nachtclubs und Discotheken reihen sich aneinander, füllen die Straßen mit Licht und Beats. Hinter Sant Antoni, in Richtung Santa Agnès, weist rechts ein Schild zur Cova Santa Agnès. Eine unterirdische Kapelle, die vermutlich vorchristlichen Riten diente – man fand hier punische, römische und arabische Relikte. Eine weitere Höhle befindet sich, gut verborgen, im Umland der Cala Salada: In der Cova de Ses Fontanelles sind Felsmalereien erkennbar, Spuren prähistorischer Jäger oder karthagischer Wachposten, das ist noch nicht geklärt.

Corona steht im Februar in einem Meer aus Mandelblüten. Wanderer und Mountainbiker erkunden gerne die Touren rund um Sant Mateu. Verlässt man Sant Antoni in Richtung Süden (Eivissa), grüßt das Töpferdorf Sant Rafel. Es wurde von der Inselregierung zum „Gebiet von künstlerischem Wert“ erklärt, aus gutem Grund: Die hier gefertigten Töpferwaren zählen zu den hübschesten Mitbringseln Ibizas.

Weiter im Norden offenbart sich das ursprüngliche Ibiza, charmante Dörfchen in imposanter Natur. Santa Agnès de

Sant Joan

Escarpados acantilados, profundas y azules aguas, frondosos bosques de pinos, los paisajes que definen el municipio de Sant Joan son salvajes y románticos. Tras una pequeña cadena montañosa se oculta el pueblo vacacional de Portinatx. Las costas rocosas flanquean el puerto natural, un faro se alza negro y blanco sobre el mar y pequeñas terrazas de restaurantes proporcionan encantadoras vistas a la bahía. Desde Portinatx una preciosa carretera secundaria serpentea a través de la Serra de la Mala Costa, paraíso de los senderistas, con frecuentes vistas panorámicas del Norte de la isla. Por aquí se llega a Sant Joan de Labritja, un lugar que desprende el encanto de un pueblo de montaña, anidado entre colinas y terrazas agrícolas, con una iglesia hecha de piedra natural entre jardines. La carretera continúa con sus curvas aún más impresionantes hacia Cala de Sant Vicent. Aquí la playa está bordeada de acantilados escarpados, mientras la isla Tagomago –destino para excursiones en barco– se asienta sobre el horizonte.

Sobre la bahía se encuentra la Cova des Culleram, misteriosa y sombreada, un lugar de culto donde los cartagineses adoraban a su diosa Tanit. A lo largo de la costa hacia el Sur se suceden playas de arena oscura con sus propios encantos: las pequeñas cuevas de S’Aigua Blanca acogen a los nudistas mientras Es Figueral recibe a los turistas más convencionales. La carretera de Sant Joan a Eivissa, o “Ruta para Gourmets” es famosa por sus delicias culinarias. Acogedoras tabernas sirven guisos caseros ibicencos y comodidad a los amantes de la buena vida.

El interior de la isla fascina por otros motivos. Aún se practica la agricultura de forma tradicional, y a menudo se ve a la gente del campo con sus vestidos típicos de otros tiempos. En medio de los campos de tierra roja se encuentra Sant Llorenç de Balàfia. La plaza elevada de la iglesia permite

una vista magnífica sobre el idílico mundo rural, donde destacan edificios blancos y tres torres de piedra. Pertenecen a Balafia, un pueblo fortificado del siglo XVI, hoy en día en manos privadas. El nombre es de origen árabe: Balafia significa “que hay agua”. Los campos de naranjos y limoneros bordean la carretera hasta Sant Miquel de Balansat. Por encima de las luminosas fachadas se alza la joya del pueblo: la iglesia fortificada, donde a menudo se practica el baile payés. Quienes buscan el sol han de visitar el Port de Sant Miquel, mientras para los interesados en la cultura está la Cova de Can Marçà. Dicen que esta cueva, labrada por las corrientes y cascadas de agua, tiene unos 100.000 años. Se ofrecen visitas guiadas acompañadas de luces y música de forma regular. La vista desde la terraza de la cueva a la isla Murada con sus aguas turquesas es espectacular. Orange and lemon groves line the road to Sant Miquel de Balansat. Above the luminous façades rises the village jewel: the fortified church, where folk dances are often performed. Sun seekers visit the Port de Sant Miquel, those interested in culture the Cova de Can Marçà. The dripstone cave with authentic trickles and waterfalls is said to be around 100.000 years old. The nearby Cala Benirràs, where “God’s Finger” rises from the waves and sailing boats bob up and down, is a gorgeous setting for sunsets. Santa Eulària

Santa Eulària recibe a quien la visita con encanto, gracias a la pintoresca entrada al pueblo, pasando la iglesia en la colina llamada Puig de Missa y el pequeño puente romano. Este Viaducto Romano cruza el Riu de Santa Eulària, el único río de las islas Pitiusas. El río fluyó hasta el siglo XX, trayendo riqueza a los árabes, que utilizaron esta valiosa fuente para desviar el agua por sistemas de riego hacia los campos, permitiendo la agricultura a gran escala.

Hoy en día este coqueto pueblo costero tiene un hermoso paseo marítimo, que permite caminar entre flores y palmeras hasta el puerto de recreo, con sus bares elegantes y soleados. En el sentido contrario se llega hasta el estuario del antiguo río, hoy en día invadido por el agua del mar. El centro del pueblo es para disfrutar. El Passeig de S’Alamera está flanqueado por tiendas y cafeterías, y en

la Calle Sant Vicent se encuentra por doquier el placer del paladar, restaurante tras restaurante.

Sobre los tejados de la ciudad moderna se alza el origen de Santa Eulària, orgulloso y noble, en el Puig de Missa. Las casas tradicionales se unen a la iglesia fortificada para formar un enclave muy valioso de tradición, incluyendo también el Museo Etnológico, en una finca restaurada. Aquí la Ibiza de ayer está al alcance de los dedos: trajes tradicionales, artículos cotidianos de entonces, muebles y una vieja prensa de aceite que muestra cómo se solía obtener el aceite de oliva. Los amantes del arte disfrutarán del pequeño Museo Barrau, con pinturas de Laureà Barrau, un artista impresionista que vivió en Ibiza a comienzos del siglo XX. Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, un bonito pueblo en el corazón de la isla, también pertenece al municipio de Santa Eulària. Está rodeado de campos de frutales, como indica el sobrenombre “de Fruitera”. En el centro del pueblo sus abundantes cafeterías y restaurantes pueden seducirte a dejar pasar ahí las horas. Los amantes de la cultura también apreciarán Santa Gertrudis por sus subastas, galerías de arte y tiendas de antigüedades y artesanía.

Santa Eulària greets visitors charmingly: the entrance is simply picturesque, past the church on the hill called Puig de Missa and the small Roman arched bridge. The Viaducto Romano crosses the bed of the Riu de Santa Eulària, the only river in the Pitiuses. The river flowed until the 20th century and brought wealth to the Arabs, who diverted this costly source with irrigation systems to the fields. This enabled

farming on a large scale. Today the well-kept seaside town boasts a seafront promenade. Passing lanterns, palm trees and flower beds you can stroll to the yachting harbour, with its chic, sunny drinking spots. Or in the opposite direction you can reach the estuary of the old river,

which has now been filled with saltwater. In the centre of town one can indulge. The Passeig de S’Alamera is framed by shops and cafés, and in the Carrer Sant Vicent, it’s all about worldly pleasure which is why local residents jokingly refer to it as “munchies mile”. Above the modern town stands the origin of Santa Eulària, proud and lofty on the Puig de Missa. Indigenous farmhouses merge with the fortified church to make up a valuable piece of tradition, including also, in a restored finca, the Ethnological Museum. Here the Ibiza of yesterday is close enough to grasp: traditional costumes, household arti-

cles, furniture and an old oil mill which impressively shows how olive oil used to be obtained. Art lovers will appreciate the small BarrauMuseum with paintings by Laureà Barrau – an impressionist who lived in Ibiza at the beginning of the 20th century. Sports fans should take the back road to Eivissa. There shines the succulent green of the golf course in Roca Llisa, which has 25 holes. Before that on the left is Cala Llonga, a bathing cove with a wide beach. From here a boat tour is available: via Santa Eulària to the holiday-makers’ haven Es Canar, where there’s a large, weekly Hippy-Market. Niu Blau beach is appreciated for its tranquillity. The town centre with its many cafés and restaurants can seduce you to happily while away the hours. Lovers of culture also appreciate Santa Gertrudis for its auctions, art galleries and shops selling antiques and handicrafts.

Kunstfreunden gefällt das kleine Barrau-Museum mit Bildern von Laureà Barrau – ein Impressionist, der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts auf Ibiza weilte. Wer es sportlich mag, begibt sich auf die Nebenstrecke nach Eivissa. Dort leuchtet saftiggrün der Golfplatz Roca Llisa, der sich durch 25 Löcher auszeichnet. Zuvor lockt links die Cala Llonga als Badebucht mit breitem Sandstrand. Von hier aus bietet sich eine Bootstour an, über Santa Eulària bis zur Ferienhochburg Es Canar, wo wöchentlich ein großer Hippie-Markt stattfindet. Ruhe und
