Previous Issue, Ramadhan 2015
CEO MESSAGE Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu The sacred month of Dhul Hijja is upon us once again and brings with it a blessed opportunity to bring us closer to Allah. Marking the end of the Islamic calendar, the first 10 days of Dhul Hijja carry a special status giving us the opportunity to increase our good deeds and rewards. In this blessed month pilgrims from across the world congregate in Mecca and stand side by side, united by their faith all for the sake of Allah the almighty, testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, reciting:
“Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner. Here I am O God in Truth, here I am.” Like the glorious month of Ramadhan, Dhul Hijja teaches us self-discipline, sincerity of prayer and the importance of repentance. Also during this month that Allah unites all Muslims in a way that is very humbling and resonates with the ummah. Hajj is most particularly significant to the concept of unity in that it brings nations and tribes together from distant lands
before their Creator. Hajj strengthens the foundations of brotherhood amongst people and societies as nothing else can in such a remarkable manner. With this in mind, we have a fantastic line-up of programmes for you this month that aim to give you the full experience of Hajj. Alongside the usual live coverage that we bring to you directly from Makkah and Madinah, we also have programmes that will give you in depth explanations of Hajj itself. In addition to this there will be live Q&A sessions with a variety of learned scholars to answer your questions and uplift your Iman. The team here at Islam Channel work around the clock to bring an array of wonderful programmes for you so please remember the Islam Channel team in your Du’as. We thank Allah for granting us another opportunity to reap his rewards and blessings, and I pray that Allah guides us all so that we may amplify the benefits of the beautiful month of Dhul Hijja.

Hajj is total submission to Allah. It is a journey of purification, taking the body and the mind on a pure experience to attest to the oneness of Allah, testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Him, declaring throughout the journey:
“Here I am, O Allah, here i am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and sovereignty, You have no partner.”
The term Hajj in the Islamic context means for one to go on pilgrimage seeking the Ka’ba to perform the ‘Manasik’. The Manasik are specific actions and utterances that Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him did whilst performing Hajj, such as circulating the Ka’ba seven times, walking between Safa and Marwa seven times, standing in Arafah, throwing the pebbles in Mina and so on. The significance of Hajj is outlined in the Quran and Hadeeth. Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala says:
“..And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way..” Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him also taught us the significance of Hajj through various ahadeeth. It is Narrated in Sahih Al Bukhari that the Prophet peace be upon him said: 10
Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
“Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers dutifully and perfectly. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) To perform Hajj To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.”
Hajj is a journey of establishing the Oneness of Allah, strengthening ones Iman and disciplining one’s self. Obeying the exact commands of Allah in dress
code, actions and chants, being patient with the long process and having the best of manners throughout the whole process, avoiding being angry whilst going through the struggles of Hajj, all to reach the ultimate reward of having all sins forgiven. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says:
“..so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj.” And the Prophet peace be upon him said:
“Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s pleasure and
does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.” The heart yearns to be in front of the ka’ba, solely seeking the pleasure Allah. We raise our hands to Allah asking Him to grant us a blessed pilgrimage and that He accepts it and grants us the full reward. Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel

8th Dhul Hijjah Start of Hajj The first official day of Hajj is 8th Dhul Hijjah in which pilgrims travel from Makkah to Mina. Prior to this, pilgrims put on Ihram and complete Umrah (if performing Hajj Tamattu’). They spend the day and night in large tents.
Makkah Al Mukarramah
STAGES OF HAJJ
Mina
9th Dhul Hijjah From Mina to Arafah and Muzdalifah Pilgrims leave in the morning and travel to the plain of Arafat. This is known as the ‘Day of Arafat’ where pilgrims stand or sit near the Mount of Mercy asking Allah for forgiveness, devote time to prayers and repent for their sins. The Prophet (saw) said: ”The best du’aa is the du’aa on the day of ‘Arafah and the best thing I and the Prophets before me have ever said is: Laa Ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa Shareeka lah!” [Malik and at-Tirmidhi] After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah which is between Arafat and Mina. It is here where they collect small stone pebbles to be used the following day. The Pilgrims must stay in Muzdalifah until they pray Fajr and must leave before the sun has risen.

10th Dhul Hijjah Proceeding to Mina and then Makkah On the third day, pilgrims move back to Mina to Jamrat al-Aqabah and throw stone pebbles at pillars and remember the story of Shaytan when he tried to persuade Ibrahim (alayhis salam) not to sacrifice his son. The stones represent Ibrahim’s rejection of Shaytan and his steadfastness. It is here that men shave their hair and women trim their hair. Meat is slaughtered and given away to the poor. This is symbolic of Ibrahim who was ready to sacrifice his son upon Allah’s command. This day also marks Eid ul Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice). The prohibitions imposed by Ihram are now removed, except for sexual relations. (Husband and wife may not enjoy conjugal relations until after Tawaf al-Ifadha – the Circumambulation of the Kaaba, central to the Hajj rites.)
Makkah Al Mukarramah
Pilgrims return to Makkah and perform Tawaf around the Kabah which is known as Tawaf al Ifadhah. Tawaf al-Ifadha is an essential element of Hajj. The pilgrim circumambulates the Kaaba seven times and then offers prayers (rakaat) behind Maqam Ibrahim; performs Sa’y between Safa and Marwah and drinks water from the Well of Zamzam. The Hajj Tawaf (Tawaf al-Ifadha) having been completed, the state of Ihram is completely ended and all restrictions are lifted including those relating to sexual relations with one’s spouse.

11th-13th Dhul Hijjah
Makkah Al Mukarramah
Returning to Mina from Makkah Pilgrims return to Mina after Dhuhr and spend the 11th, 12th and 13th day of Dhul Hijjah there in which they stone the three Jamaraat starting with the smallest using 7 pebbles for each. The three pillars will be stoned in a set order, performing ramy al-uula, ramy al-wusta and ramy al- kubra.
Farewell Tawaf in the Holy City of Makkah The pilgrim then may return to al Masjid al Haram to perform the Farewell Tawaf after ramy on 12th of Dhul-Hijjah, or he may stay till 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, performing ramy for the third time, before returning to al Masjid al Haram for the Farewell Tawaf. On the 12th or the 13th, Pilgrims return to Makkah and make a farewell Tawaf. Sa’ee does not form part of the Farewell Tawaf. All pilgrims are required to leave the country by 10th Muharaam which is around a month after Hajj. Departing for home The Hajj is now completed and the pilgrim can leave the Holy City of Makkah promptly for his next destination. (Hajj al-Tamattu’ has an extra stage after performing the Welcome Tawaf and Sa’y i.e. the third step Ihram for Hajj al-Tamattu’ which is not included in Hajj al-Ifrad and Hajj al-Qiran.)

Sheikh Mohammad bin Salih Al Uthaymeen
From the bounties that Allah bestowed upon His righteous servants are seasons of worship that the believers should make the maximum from, and from these seasons are the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijja. We are taught the significance of these ten days from the Quran and the Sunnah. Allah, Mighty and Exalted, says in the first two verses of Surah Fajr: By the dawn; By the ten nights Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) states: “The ten nights here are the ten days of Dhul Hijja as reported by Ibn Abbas, Ibn Al Zubayr, Mujahid and others”. And Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala also says:
… and mention the Name of Allah on appointed days…
16
Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
Ibn Abbas mentions that what is meant by “appointed days” is the ten days of Dhul Hijja. The Prophet peace be upon him says:
2. Fasting
“No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul Hijja).”
3. Takbeer (Allahu Akbar), Tahleel (La ilaha illa Allah) and Tahmeed *AlhamduliLah)
And he also said:
“No good deeds done on other days are superior or loved more by Allah than those done on these ten days, so increase in them your Tahleel (La ilaha illa Allah) , Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and Tahmeed (AlhamduliLah)”. The great scholar Ibn Hajar mentions the following regarding these blessed ten days, in his seminal work, Fath al-Bari: “ What is apparent from the cause of these days being the most significant is the combination of all the major acts of worship in it being encouraged and rewarded immensely, such as prayer, fasting, charity and Hajj. And we do not find this level of encouragement and immense reward elsewhere”.
Some actions that are liked by Allah during the first ten days of Dhul Hijja 1. Prayer
Hunaida bin Khalid narrates that his wife heard from some of the wives of The Prophet: “ The Prophet peace be upon him used to fast the first nine days of dhul Hijja, the day of Ashura and three days from every month.”
And this is from the hadeeth from Ibn Umar where The prophet peace be upon him states: “..so increase in them your Tahleel, Takbeer and Tahmeed. ”Al Imam Al Bukhari states: Ibn Umar and Abu Huraira may Allah be pleased with them used to go out to the market during the first ten days of dhul Hijja and they used to praise Allah loudly, and the people there would be encouraged by them and they would start praising copying them ”. The sheikh also said: “Umar may Allah be pleased with him used to raise his voice praising Allah in the masjid in Mina, this used to encourage the people in the masjid to do the same as him, and the Takbeer will reach the market and the people in the market also start to praise Allah, until the whole of Mina throbbed.” 4. Fasting on the day of Arafah One should make sure that they observe the fast on the day of Arafah. The Prophet peace be upon him says regarding the reward for fasting that day:
I have sincere hope that Allah will forgive the sins of the past year and the year to follow. The Prophet peace be upon him also said:
Making sure that one prays on time and increases their Nafila prayers as it is from the best means of getting close to Allah. Thawban may Allah be pleased with him narrates that he heard the prophet peace be upon him say:
There is no day that Allah saves a slave from the hellfire more than he does on the day of Arafah.
“Prostrate to Allah plenty, as for every prostration you make Allah will raise you towards him a level, and he erases with it a sin of yours.”
We pray to Allah asking Him to help us utilise these days worshipping Him to the best of our ability.

‘Verily, Ibrahim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities), or a nation, obedient to Allah, Hanif (i.e. to worship none but Allah), and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and those who joined partners with Allah). (He was) thankful for His (Allah’s) Favours. He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a Straight Path (Islamic Monotheism - neither Judaism nor Christianity). And We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he shall be of the righteous. Then, We have sent the revelation to you (O Muhammad (pbuh) saying): “Follow the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanif (Islamic Monotheism - to worship none but Allah) and he was not of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters and disbelievers).’ [Al Nahl 120 – 123] Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his tafsir: “Allah The Almighty is praising His slave, His Messenger and His close friend Ibrahim ‘alayhil salaam, the leader of the Monothiests and the father of the prophets, and He is exonerating him from the beliefs of the polytheists, and the Christians and the Jews. Sufyan Al Thawri narrates on the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud: The word Ummah in the verse means one that teaches goodness. Imam Malik narrates on the authority of Ibn Umar: The word Ummah means the one who teaches the people their religion.” We learn that Allah orders The Prophet peace be upon him to follow Ibrahim peace be upon him as a role model. The difficulties, hardships and tests that he went through proved him to be worthy of the great praise that Allah the almighty grants him in the Quran, and labels him as a Khaleel (A close friend). Allah The Almighty makes Makkah, the Ka’ba, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and the religion of Islam all a result of the Dua of Ibrahim peace be upon him. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him says: “I am Allah’s servant (as written) in the Mother of the Book, and verily the seal of Prophets when Adam was still kneaded in his clay. I shall tell you of the meaning of this. (I am) the prayer of my father Ibrahim and the glad tidings proclaimed by `Isa to his people and the vision of my mother who saw that a light issued from her illuminating the very palaces of Syria, and so do all the mothers of Prophets see, Allah’s blessings be upon them.”
Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
19
This Dua was made when Ibrahim took his wife with her new born baby to an isolated barren land, and left them there with a few dates and some water as a test from Allah. Indeed, this Dua is guidance for the whole of humanity, and understanding it and saying it will help one to remain steadfast. We pray that Allah makes us from them.
“And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said: “O my Lord! Make this city (Makkah) one of peace and security, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.”’
“O my Lord! They have indeed led astray many among mankind. But whoso follows me, he verily is of me. And whoso disobeys me, still You are indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
“O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Ka’bah at Makkah) in order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat). So fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks.”
“O our Lord! Certainly, You know what we conceal and what we reveal. Nothing on the earth or in the heaven is hidden from Allah.”
“All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has given me in old age Isma’il (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac). Verily! My Lord is indeed the All-Hearer of invocations.”
“O my Lord! Make me one who performs As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat ), and (also) from my offspring, our Lord! And accept my invocation.”
“Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and (all) the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established.” [Ibrahim, 35 – 41]

THE DAY OF ARAFAH The Day of Arafah is the second day of the Hajj Pilgrimage, falling before Eid al Adha. The standing at Arafah praying and seeking forgiveness is of paramount significance, reminding us of the Day of Resurrection, of how we will all stand equal before Allah.

Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
At dawn, the pilgrims in Makkah will make their way from Mina to gather on a hillside and plain nearby, called Mount Arafah, which is where Prophet Muhammad gave his farewell sermon in the last year of his life. Often they will set out after sunrise to attend the Khutbah of Arafat which takes place just before Dhuhr prayer. It was on this day, referred to also as the 9th of Dhu’l-Hijja or Yawm Al-‘Arafah that the following verse was revealed to the people of Makkah, when Allah (SWT) says:
“This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favour on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion” (Quran 5:3) There are many blessings that are to be had on this day, with Muslims often fasting together and spending additional hours in supplication
and contemplation, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad who was reported by Muslim to have never missed fasting on this day. We are told in various Ahadeeths that fasting on this day expiates sins committed the year prior and the year following it:
"Fasting on the Day of 'Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year” (Reported by all except al-Bukhari and at-Tirmidhi) However, fasting is prohibited by Muslims who are on the Hajj itself as a mercy to ease the difficulty of their pilgrimage. The Day of Arafah is said to also be a day on which people are saved from the fires of Jahannam. In Sahih Muslim it was narrated from Aa'ishah that Prophet Muhammad said:
'There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, 'What do these people want?' Our Prophet
mentioned that:
"The best invocation on the day of Arafah, and the best of all the invocations I ever offered or other Prophets (peace be upon them all) before me ever offered is; "There is no god but Allah: He is Unique; He has no partner, the whole universe is for Him and for Him is the praise, and He has power over all things." The Day of Arafah is expected to be around October 3rd this year, subject to the lunar calendar.

Allah wants to forgive us. He the Almighty always grants us chances and opportunities to turn back to Him, so whenever Allah gives us a chance to return to Him we must take it. We all know that ‘Humans make mistakes’, so what should the approach of a Muslim be towards transgressing the limits and boundaries set by Allah? Firstly, we need to know that this life is a test, Allah says:
“(It is Allah) Who has created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving;“ One may ask, if this life is a test and all humans make mistakes, what is the solution if making mistakes is inevitable in a world where we exist to be trialed? The solution is very simple; it was narrated that our prophet peace be upon him said:
“All mankind make mistakes, and the best of them are those who rectify them.” So the secret here is to repent and to go back to Allah. He The Almighty says:
“And those who, when they have committed Fâhishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allâh and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but Allâh - and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.” As this life is a test, mistakes are inevitable, and we must repent. We should also know that repentance should be instant, the first thing that Allah mentioned regarding those who believe and will be forgiven for their sins, is that they “remember Allah”, then they “ask for forgiveness”. In a verse before this, Allah orders us to hasten in seeking forgiveness, He says:
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord; and a Garden, the extensiveness of which is (as) the heavens and the earth, it is prepared for Al-Muttaqún.” But the sin can sometimes be so great, so will Allah forgive? Allah answers:
Say: “O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh: verily, Allâh forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
35
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“I advise you to be shy of Allah, in the same manner that you shy away from sinning whilst you are in the presence of a righteous man.”
Because this life is a test, we aim to achieve the highest rewards, and avoid mistakes at all costs, and this is the challenge. So how can one overcome desire? 1.
36
Keep Allah in mind Always know that Allah is watching, He will reward if you overcome, and He will punish if you fall and don’t repent. Don’t forget that Allah is always there for you, so don’t deny yourself the honour and right to ask for His help. Sometimes we do try and come up with excuses for ourselves, such as “Allah will forgive you if you repent so just sin and repent later”, “Allah knows what you are going through, it’s difficult, He will understand why you are sinning, so sin, and repent later”. This leads us to our next point.
2.
Be shy of Allah. Our Prophet peace be upon him advised us: “I advise you to be shy of Allah, in the same manner that you shy away from sinning whilst you are in the presence of a righteous man.”
3.
Because you Love Allah, obey Him. How
Hajj Brochure 2015 | Islam Channel
can one claim to love Allah and not obey Him. How can one claim to love anyone and not listen to them? 4.
Remember that you will be held to account
Remember the day when Allah will ask the hell fire if it was full, and the hell fire will respond asking if there is anymore. And it’s not just waiting till the Day of Judgment for a punishment, as what we will gain in this life and the next will be based on our actions. If there is a sin that you did, repent. Know the mistake, regret it, ask Allah sincerely to forgive you, and aim to not go back to it. It being hurting someone, or breaking any boundary that Allah has set. This is the month of Dhul Hijja, and there is no other month that Allah forgives more humans in than this month, so let us try our best to renew our intentions and repent for all of the minor and major sins that we have committed. I pray Allah grants us sincere repentance and accepts from us our actions.

Nasrine Abdirachid explores the significance of ‘Udhiya,’ its conditions and philosophy.
“Say (O Muhammad): Verily, my Salah (Prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists). He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims”. [Quran, Surah Al-An’am: The Cattle, 6:162]

The origins of Udhiya
The importance of Udhiya
It seems the word sacrifice often carries negative connotations, but in reality to sacrifice merely means to sincerely give something up and offer it to Allah. While there are numerous sacrifices you can make for the sake of Allah, such as leaving a place that is detrimental for your faith or breaking a bad habit; offering an animal in the name of Allah and for His sake is a very important act in Islam.
References to sacrifice are often found in the Holy Qur’an alongside commandments to perform obligatory ‘Salah’ (Prayer). Allah says in the Qur’an:
‘Udhiya’ (also known as Qurbani) is the Arabic word for ‘sacrifice’, namely the sacrifice of an animal, of cattle, for the sake of Allah. To sacrifice an animal is regarded as an act of worship in Islam. The origin of this noble act can be traced back to the story of the Prophet Ibraheem and his son, the Prophet Ismaeel (peace be upon them). Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh) received a commandment where he was instructed to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah. Upon telling his son about the commandment, Prophet Ismaeel (pbuh) did not hesitate and encouraged his father to fulfill his responsibility. Faithfully and willingly, he and his son were eager to please Allah and perform the act, but due to His abundant Mercy, Allah replaced Prophet Ibraheem’s (pbuh) son with a goat just as he was about to complete the sacrifice. Their response was to rejoice and praise Allah. The significance and philosophy of Udhiya is that, it is an act of complete and total submission to Allah. Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh), who was willing to sacrifice the life of his son, was eager to prove his devotion to Allah in spite of the grief it may have caused him. For us, the act is intended to prove your willingness to wholeheartedly adhere to and obey a command of Allah. In addition, reflecting upon Ibraheem‘s (pbuh) test, we should glorify and thank Allah for not being put through such a testing trial.

“So turn in Prayer to your Lord and sacrifice”. [Qur’an, Surah Al- Kawthar: The Abundance, 108:2] For it to be found next to one of the most important acts of worship, shows the significant weight the act of sacrifice carries in Islam. It is a prescription upon every sane and capable Muslim. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so, should not come to the place where the Eid prayer is offered”. (Ibn Majah). The conditions of Udhiya As with all other acts of worship, Udhiya carries conditions. There are six conditions that the offering must meet. 1. The animal should be from a breed that is herded, known as ‘an’am’ (animal of cattle); these include camels, cattle, goats and sheep. 2. The animal must be of mature age. This is an animal considered to be of adult age. This is five years old for a camel, two years old for a cow and one year old for a sheep. However, if one cannot find an animal of mature age, it is permissible to offer a sheep of premature age, which means of six months and above. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Do not sacrifice anything but an adult animal, unless it is difficult for you, in which case you may slaughter a six-month old lamb (jadh’ah)”. [Sahih Al-Muslim] 3. The animal must be free from defects that would invalidate it as an offering. There are four specific defects that apply according to
the recorded tradition of the Prophet (pbuh): i. Obvious defects of the eyes, including a sunken eye or a deformed eye, as well as signs indicating that the animal is blind in one or both eyes (such as discoloration or cloudiness). ii. Clear illness; if an animal exhibits symptoms of illness such as appearing disoriented, fever, open wounds or skin ailments are all regarded as clear illnesses. iii. A limp is also a considered a defect, particularly, if the animal is unable to support itself upright properly. iv. Emaciation or lack of nutrition is another defect that invalidates the offering. [Muwatta Imam Malik] 4. The animal being sacrificed must belong to the person offering it. It must not be a stolen or confiscated animal, or one that has been obtained under false pretences. If the animal does not belong to the person offering the sacrifice, then permission must be sought from the owner. This condition applies because one must not disobey Allah in an attempt to please Him. 5. The animal being offered for sacrifice must not have rights associated with another, such as being a loan or on mortgage. 6. The animal must be sacrificed on the days as specified by the ‘Shari’ah’ (Islamic Divine Law and Moral Code). These are the four days in the Islamic month of ‘Dhul Hijjah’, specifically the day of ‘Eid Al-Adha’ (festival of sacrifice) and the three days thereafter. Any sacrifice offered before the Eid day or after the three days is not valid. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever slaughters (his sacrifice) before the prayer, it is meat that he has brought to his family, but that is not the sacrifice”. [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Once an animal has been offered as sacrifice, its meat is eaten and given in charity and according to most schools of thought, it is obligatory to give some of the meat of the animal as charity and eating some is highly encouraged, while some may be given as gifts. This is because Allah says: “Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor having a hard time”. [Qur’an, Surah Al-Hajj: The Pilgrimage, 22:28] The Shaafa’is said it is favoured that: “He should eat one third himself, feed one third to whomever he wants, and give one third in charity”. [Nayl Al-Awtaar, 5/145; Al-Siraaj Al-Wahhaaj, 563] The beauty of Udhiya Udhiya is an act of worship done solely to receive Allah’s pleasure; to do something entirely for His sake and attain the rewards. The Prophet (pbuh) was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, The Most High, what is Qurbani?” ‘He replied, “It is the sunnah (tradition) of your father lbraheem”. ‘They asked again, “What benefit do we get from it?” ‘He answered, “A reward for every hair (of the sacrificed animal)”. ‘They asked, “And for wool, O Messenger of Allah?” ‘He replied, “A reward for every fibre of the wool”’. [Ibn Majah] Often described as the Sunnah of the Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh), the origins of this noble act teaches us many lessons to learn, such as having complete trust in Allah, The Most High, complete submission to His word and commands, and displaying with our actions the love we have for Him in our hearts. May we all be among those who sacrifice spiritually, mentally and physically solely for the sake of Allah and reap the promised rewards of those who do. Ameen.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF EID-UL-ADHA IN ISLAM Sara Morad, Information & Public Affairs Officer
Eid-ul-Adha - also known as the Eid of Qurbani (sacrifice) is the Eid that follows the performing of Hajj (pilgrimage), which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
T
he significance of Eid-ul-Adha venerates Prophet Ibrahim’s ultimate sacrifice of his son upon the command of Allah SWT. This act of loyalty and dedication was a test to Prophet Ibrahim as when he went to kill his son, considering this now his duty, Allah SWT replaced his son with a sheep. Eid-ul-Adha celebrates and commends this pure act of Prophet Ibrahim, and his obedience to Allah SWT. This sacrifice is honoured by the sacrifice of an animal on Eid-ul-Adha (usually a goat, sheep or cow), and is divided into three equal portions for distribution amongst friends, family and the poor. The day begins with the Eid prayer (Salat-ulEid), which is usually performed in congregation in order to thank Allah SWT for his blessings. Muslims generally wear either their best or new clothes and unite to celebrate. They greet each other with the traditional greeting “Eid Mubarak”, which means “Eid blessings”, and again, a tradi-
tional feast is prepared, which is enjoyed with family and friends. Sometimes children are given gifts or money by their elders, and charity is also generally given to those who are less fortunate. This Eid is generally referred to as the bigger of the two Eid’s, as the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim was prepared to make in His devotion to Allah SWT is seen as immense. If Prophet Ibrahim was prepared to sacrifice His son in reverence to the command of Allah SWT then why shouldn’t we at least go some way in providing for the children of Islam? Donate to Muslim Aid today and take part in our Eid gift programme to provide gifts to some of the world’s most impoverished children and orphans. The thawaab (blessings) you may get in return could far outweigh what you choose to bequeath. Muslim Aid is delivering its Qurbani programme in the UK and internationally. THE STORY OF
ZamZam
A
llah always tests his Prophets to make sure that they are strong. One day Ibrahim (AS) went to his wife Haajar (AS) and told her to get herself and her baby Ismail ready for a long journey. He took them on a long journey, walking and walking for a long time, until they reached the desert of the Arabian Peninsula & came to a dry valley having no fruit, no trees, no food and no water. The valley had no sign of life. After Ibrahim (AS) had helped his wife and child off the camel, he left them with a small amount of food and water which was hardly enough for two days. He turned around and walked away. His wife hurried after him asking: “Where are you going Ibrahim (AS), leaving us in this barren valley?” He did not answer her and continued walking. She repeated what she had said, but he remained silent. Finally she understood that he was not acting on his own idea. She realised that Allah had commanded him to do this. She asked him: “Did Allah command you to do so?” He replied: “Yes”. This great wife said: “We are not going to be lost, since Allah is the one who commanded you, He will not forsake us”. Ibrahim (AS) was very sad while he was walking home because he had left his wife and son in a place with no other people. He then raised his hands and prayed a special prayer for Haajar (AS) and his baby. (please see page for more detail) Haajar (AS) began to drink from the water that
Ibrahim (AS) had left so she could feed Ismail her milk. Soon, the water was finished and both she and her baby began to cry, so she went to a close hill called Al-Marwa and hoped that she might find somebody, but she did not find anyone. She kept running from Al-Marwa to the other end called Al-Safa seven times! When she reached Al-Marwa for the last time she heard a voice, and so she kept quiet to hear where the voice was coming from. She heard the voice again and said: “O, whoever you may be! You have made me hear your voice; have you got something to help me?” And behold! She saw an Angel digging the earth till water flowed from that place. She ran to the water and started to make something like a basin around it and filled her water-skin with water. Some people traveling through Makkah saw birds flying around Al-Marwa and thought the birds might be flying around water. These people were common travellers, and they knew that there wasn’t water in that part of the desert, however they wanted to make sure, so they sent someone to go and find out and to their amazement they were surprised to find a well there! When they arrived at the small well, they found a woman there with a baby. They asked Haajar (AS) if they could drink from it. Haajar (AS) allowed them under the condition that they pay her. The tribe accepted, and from that day onwards many people came to live with Haajar (AS) and Ismail. Now she and Ismail were not alone any more. Haajar (AS) was right, Allah did look after her and her child, just like she believed, and Ibrahim (AS) passed the test.

THE PROPHET
FAREWELL SERMON
Delivered on the 9th Dhul-Hijjah 10AH in the ‘Uranah Valley of Mount ‘Arafah in Makkah
T
he Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wasalam) used to meet the angel Jibreel (AS) every Ramadhan and read verses of the Qur’an which had been revealed. On the 10th AH, Jibreel (AS) said they would read the Qur’an twice, which the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wasalam) understood to mean that his life was coming to an end. During the same year he prepared for Hajj and on 4th of Dhul Hijjah he made his well known speech which came to be known as the Farwell Sermon. Below are some extracts from this: O’ Ye people! Allah says, O’ people, We created you from one male and one female and made you into tribes and nations, so as to be known to one another. Verily in the sight of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most God-fearing. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white

Verily your blood, your property and your honour are sacred and inviolable until you appear before your Lord, as the sacred inviolability of this day of yours, this month of yours and this very town (of yours). Verily you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for your actions. O’ people! Verily you have got certain rights over your women and your women have certain rights over you. It is your right upon them to honour their conjugal rights, and not to commit acts of impropriety, which if they do, you are authorised by Allah to separate them from your beds and chastise them, but not severely, and if they refrain, then clothe and feed them properly. Behold! It is not permissible for a woman to give anything from the wealth of her husband
to anyone but with his consent. Treat the women kindly, since they are your helpers and not in a position to manage their affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for verily you have taken them on the security of Allah and have made their persons lawful unto you by words of Allah.
which will never lead you astray, the Book of Allah, which if you hold fast you shall never go astray. And beware of transgressing the limits set in the matters of religion, for it is transgression of (the proper bounds of) religion that brought destruction to many people before you. Verily, the satan is disappointed at ever being worshipped in this land of yours, but he will be pleased by obedience in any thing (short of worship that is) in matters you may be disposed to think insignificant, so beware of him in your matters of religion.
O’ people! Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, has ordained to every one his due share (of inheritance). Hence there is no need (of special) testament for an heir (departing from the rules laid down by the Shari’ah). All “There is no superiority for an Arab over Behold!
