Dear respected brothers and sisters, Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu My sincere greetings to Muslims around the world during this auspicious month of Ramadhan. The month of Ramadhan offers us a unique opportunity to earn Allah’s pleasure. It is a month in which mercy descends upon us, our sins are effaced, and our dua’s are responded to. We should capture every moment of this month and be grateful to Allah that we have been given yet another chance to enjoy the blessed month of Ramadhan.
Fasting is an experience with the entire Muslim Ummah. It gives us a sense of togetherness and creates the strongest of bonds. With the same merit let us not forget the millions of needy Muslims around world who are in state of distress far worse than any of us can imagine. Fasting helps us understand the suffering and pains of the needy and we also learn how to be more kind and generous. Ramadhan is also the month that the Ummah increases in their charitable acts and the rewards for this generosity are multiplied. The Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi assallam) said, "The best charity is that given in Ramadhan." Alhamdulillah, last Ramadhan over 10 million pounds was raised through Islam Channel charity live appeals through the continuous support of the Islam Channel viewers.
This is the best of months as the Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa salam) said in his sermon on the eve of Ramadhan “…Allah has decreed this month the best of all months. The days of this month are the best among the days, and the nights the best among the nights, and the hours “There have been a number of events over recent the best among the hours.” We times which should remind us of the importance of should do our utmost to observe being united as an Ummah. “ the rites which reflect our obedience to Allah and bearing in mind that we do so only for the sake of Allah. Essentials to ensure we spend a fully rewarding Ramadhan Suhoor - Suhoor is distinctive of the Ummah, it is timed between the
middle of the night and dawn. There are blessings in Suhoor ...”Eat Suhoor, for there are blessings in it.” (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Eating Suhoor would be fulfilled by eating a small or large quantity of food, or even just by drinking a sip of water as mentioned in the Hadith of Abu Said al-Khudri. However, the best of Suhoor is eating dates since the Prophet (pbuh) said: “How excellent are dates as the believer’s Suhoor.” (Abu Dawood, Ibn Hibban and al-Baihaqee; Sahih).

Qur’an - The Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet (pbuh) as a source of guidance for mankind during the month of Ramadhan. In this month, try and rekindle your relationship and understanding with the Qur’an. Take time to recite whilst reading the meaning also, so that you may connect with the words of Allah (swt).
Taraweeh - Performing Taraweeh in congregation during the month of Ramadhan is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). To complete recitation of the Qur’an takes place over the period of Ramadhan and additionally there is a lot of reward for praying in Jama’ah.
Last 10 Days - Not only are the last 10 days a sad reminder for us about how quickly this holy month has passed, it is also regarded as the days of salvation from the Hellfire. Spend increasing amount of time supplicating and asking for the ultimate protection. Within the last days there is also the Night of Power, it was also on this night in which the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) received the start of the revelation from Allah. It is recommended to make long qiyam (recitation) prayer during any of the odd nights in the last 10 days.
Night of Power - the Powerful Night of Ramadhan, otherwise known as Laylat al-Qadr. On this night (usually the last ten days of Ramadan), Muslim men and women gather to engage in prayer and Qur’an recitation, asking for forgiveness and seeking reward: “Whoever stands in night prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of solely his true faith (Iman) and seeks the divine reward, then his previous sins are forgiven.” (Al-Bukhari).
Charity - Due to the multiplying of good deeds during Ramadhan, it is recommended that one chooses to offer Zakaat or charitiable donations. It is often said that charity is deeply beneficial for one’s spirituality for it can bring many blessings such as barakah to one’s wealth, family or prevention of calamities. More information on zakaat can be found on page 44.

Welcoming Ramadhan As the blessed month of Ramadhan arrives, we can appreciate that we are of those fortunate enough to be in the midst of this bountiful month: a month of effort, reward, repentance and revival. In preparation for this holy month the companions of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) used to pray to Allah six months prior to its start, they would do so to extend their lives so that they would be able to fast during Ramadhan. This is the level of bounty in this month, a level unprecedented and difficult for the human mind to grasp. The sahabah would continue to ask Allah to accept their fast six months after in fear that their efforts would not be accepted. This is the level to which we aspire.
As vast or petty the distance may seem this is the month to draw closer and what a great method through which to do this than to fast. Our intentions this Ramadhan are of the upmost importance. They should be for the sake of Allah and to seek His pleasure. Approaching this month with the proper intentions will mean we can Insha’Allah reap its benefits. Many of us will make the intention before fasting but we should also make the correct intention for the everyday tasks that that we carry out during this month and in that way these everyday tasks will transform into acts of worship which we will be rewarded for in multitude. Make sincere intention and commit to ensure that you take full advantage of these benefits.
According to the “Oh you who have believed, decreed upon you is Companion `Ubadah ibn fasting as it was decreed upon those before you al-Samit, the tradition of that you may become righteous [Muttaqun].” (2:183) the Prophet Muhammed (sallahu alayhi wa salam) was to say upon entering this month: We pray that this month allows us to set Allahumma sallimnee li ramadhana the foundation for the coming months and wasallim ramadhana wa sallimhu minnee that we are able to use it for its wonderous mutaqabbilan. (Oh Allah, greet and save benefits. Prophet FAREWELL SERMON
T
he Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wasalam) used to meet the angel Jibreel every Ramadhan and read verses of the Qur’an which had been revealed. On the 10th AH Jibreel said they would read the Qur’an twice, which the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wasalam) understood to mean that his life was coming to an end. During the same year he prepared for Hajj and on 4th of Dhul Hijjah he made his well known speech which came to be known as the Farwell Sermon. Below are some extracts from this:
Verily you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for your actions. O’ people! Verily you have got certain rights over your women and your women have certain rights over you. It is your right upon them to honour their conjugal rights, and not to commit acts of impropriety, which if they do, you are authorised by Allah to separate them from your beds and chastise them, but not severely, and if they refrain, then clothe and feed them properly. Behold! It is not permissible for a woman to

I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray, the Book of Allah, which if you hold fast you shall never go astray.”
O’ People! Every Muslim is the brother of every other Muslim, and all the Muslims form one brotherhood. And your slaves; see that you feed them with such food as you eat yourselves, and clothe them with the clothes that you yourselves wear. Take heed not to go astray after me and strike one another’s necks. He who (amongst you) has any trust with him, he must return it to its owner. O’ people! No Prophet would be raised after me and no new Ummah (would be formed) after you. Verily I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray, the Book of Allah, which if you hold fast you shall never go astray. And beware of transgressing the limits set in the matters of religion, for it is transgression of (the proper bounds of) religion that brought destruction to many people before you. Verily, the satan is disappointed at ever being worshipped in this land of yours, but he will be pleased by

Worship your Lord; offer prayers five times a day; observe fast in the month of Ramadhan; pay readily the Zakaat (poor due) on your property; and perform pilgrimage to the House of God and obey your rulers and you will be admitted to the Paradise of your Lord. And if you were asked about me, what would you say?” They answered, “We bear witness that you have conveyed the trust (of religion) and discharged your ministry of Prophethood and looked to our welfare.” Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) lifted his forefinger towards the sky and then pointing towards people said: “O’ Lord: Bear Thou witness unto it.

Tips for a Healthy Ramadhan During the long summer days of Ramadhan, it is imperative that we nourish and replenish our bodies with the right food groups to give us a varied and balanced diet, and to avoid problems like headaches, low blood sugar and lethargy.
What to do...
DO start suhoor with a light meal: Eat whole wheat, oat cereal or whole wheat bread. This group is a good source of complex carbohydrates, which are a good source of energy and provide some protein, minerals, and dietary fibre.
DO break your fast with three dates: According to Prophetic Sunnah this is the best way to break your fast. Dates are an excellent source of fibre, sugar, magnesium, potassium, and have carbohydrates which will aid the body in maintaining health. The carbohydrates found in dates also make the fruit a slower digesting food.
DO replenish your body with plenty of water and juices: During the summer months, it is important to get your 1.2 litres of fluid every day as recommended by the Department of Health. This can avoid symptoms like headaches, loss of energy and nausea.

What to avoid... AVOID eating your entire day’s food intake at suhoor! The body has regulatory mechanisms in place that activate during fasting. Eat foods that take longer to digest to ensure you have enough energy during your day.
AVOID sugary drinks: Many soft drinks are high in sugar and calories and can make you more likely to gain weight. It is recommended to check nutritional labels, and if water is too plain for the taste buds, we suggest flavouring your water with lemon, lime or oranges!
AVOID direct exposure to sunlight: wearing a hat when out, using sunglasses to reduce the effect of glare from the sun can all help to reduce the likelihood of headaches and dehydration.
AVOID intensive sporting activity: In moderation is fine but try to avoid heat especially between 4pm and 5:30pm time for which the body needs fuel.
AVOID oily and over-spicy food: This is a common mistake for many of us. This type of food is high in cholesterol and leaves us hungry and wanting more. The control of heartburn or belching can be aided by avoiding these foods. Reducing your caffeine intake and stopping smoking can also be of benefit. Feed your body with the right nutrients to maintain a healthy balances diet.

The night of Lailat al Qadr Allah humma innaka afuwun tohib bul afwa fa’afu anni (tirmidhi)
DU’AAS FOR RAMADHAN Below are some key Du’aas to be recited during Ramadhan to ensure we gain as much reward and benefits from this special month as possible. We should make du’aa in abundance and seek Allah’s support and forgiveness in all matters. Remember one of the most blessed times during this month to make dua is just before we break our fast (iftaar)!
Du’aa for keeping the fast Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri ramadhan. Meaning: “I intend to keep the fast tomorrow in the month of Ramadhan.” Du’aa for breaking the fast Allahumma laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ‘alaa rizqika aftartu. Meaning: “O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance.”
Upon breaking the fast in someone’s home Aftara ‘indakumus saa’imuna, wa akala ta’aamakumul-abraaru, wasallat ‘alaikumul mala’ikat. Meaning: “May those who are fasting break their fast in your home, and may the dutiful and pious eat your food and may the angels send prayers upon you.”
Meaning: “O Allah! You are the Forgiver and You like forgiving so forgive me.” Recommended Du’aa by the Prophet (PBUH) Allahumma innaka ‘awfuwwun kareemun tuhibbul ‘awfa fa’fu ‘annee. Meaning: “O Allah, You are the best forgiver, beneficent and merciful. You love forgiveness so forgive me.” (at-Timidhi) When you are fasting, and someone is rude to you Inni sa’iimu, inni sa’iimu Meaning: “I am fasting, I am fasting [Sahih al-Bukhari, Fath al-Bari of Al-Asqalani;” 4:1-3, Muslim; 2:806]
Recited at intervals of taraweeh prayers Subhana dhil Mulki wal Malakuti, subhana dhil izzati wal adhmati wal haybati wal Qudrati, wal kibriyaa’I wal jabaroot Subhanal Malikil hayyil ladhi, la yunaamu wa la yamutu, subbuhun, Quddusun, Rabbul malaa’ikati war-rooh la ilaha illal lahu, nustugfirullahi nas ‘alukul jannati, wa na udhubika min an-naar. Meaning: “Glorified is the Owner of the kingdom of the earth and the heavens; glorified is the Possessor of honour and magnificence and awe, and power and greatness and omnipotence glorified is the Sovereign, the Living who does neither sleep nor die. O all Glorious, All Holy one, our Lord and the Lord of the Angles, and the soul. There is no God but You, forgive us, grant us paradise, and save us from (hell) fire.” We should also remember to make du’aa for the Ummah and for those who are suffering in various countries. The Prophet (sallahu alayki wa salam) said: ‘Whenever you make a supplication for another believer and he is not present, an angel will say ‘and same to you.’ (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)

Making the most of Ramadhan Imagine this Ramadhan is to be your last; wouldn’t you want to make the most of it? Here are 10 ways that can help you work towards a successful Ramadhan and ultimately increase your Emaan.

Increase the time you spend with your Qur’an, read the beautiful book of guidance at least once a day. Why not upload the Qur’an onto your phone, IPod or MP3 player with a recitation by a Qari whom you find inspirational?

In addition to your annual Zakaat perhaps you could sponsor a child or find a project such as funding schools in developing countries where you can have regular engagement. Such charity gives you an emotional connection to the recipient and will help you in being content with the blessings that God has provided you.

Appreciate and be more thankful of the blessings you receive, and so incorporate ‘Alhamdulillah’ into your life. Thanking and praising Him for the small bounties in your life leads to gratitude and contentment. The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) said “Alhamdulillah is the statement of appreciation and that when the servant says Alhamdulillah, God says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’’’ (Ibn Abi Hatim)
Ramadhan has the potential to reset your spiritual compass and give your life renewed direction, to work towards this how about creating a list of the ways you wish to improve your life spiritually and in other ways. Making these Intentions function like targets and goals for you to meet and work towards.

05 Invite others to dine with you for a simple iftar and accept the invitations of others for that is one of the five rights a Muslim has over another Muslim (Bukhari & Muslim).
Be the one to forgive and move on as it is the month of mercy, if we expect mercy from our creator we must forgive one another likewise. Put those you love first and empathise with their emotions, as the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) said, “Love for your brother what you love for yourself.” (Muslim)
09 07 Find a quiet and peaceful time everyday to reflect on your day, what did you learn? What was the positive and negative parts of the day? And how you could of done it better? Even on bad days we should remember every new dawn brings new opportunities.
08 Control your anger at all times, those who control their anger are described by the Qur’an thus, “Those who spend (in God’s cause) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress their anger, and who pardon men, verily, God loves those that do good.” (3:133-134).
Patience is most important especially nowadays when we try to do too many things at once. Take things slow and learn to focus and prioritise your work. If times become tough try using support of friends or family.
10 Lastly, it is easy to fall into the trap of keeping yourself busy when you are fasting so that you do not feel hunger or thirst. However, one can only really gain the full significance of the month by developing focus on the hunger and thirst and examining what it is trying to teach us. Try to get rid of any distractions, identify what is a negative drain on your focus and remove it. Abu Huraira related that the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) said: Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except wakefulness (Darimi).

Introducing your Children to Fasting It is not compulsory for children to fast during Ramadhan until they reach the age of maturity. However, in many families, younger children enjoy participating in our holy month of Ramadhan. It is common for children to take part in Ramadhan in other ways, aside from the daily fast. They may collect money to donate to the needy, help cook meals for iftar or read the Qur’an with the family in the evening. At the end of Ramadhan, children are often indulged with gifts of sweets and money on the day of Eid al-Fitr.

Chorba The soup is essential during the Ramadhan, to break the fast along with milk and dates.
Preparation time: 20 minutes Cook time: 60 minutes Serves 4

3 tbsp olive oil 4 chicken drumsticks 500g of chopped tomato and half a tbsp of tomato concentrate 1 diced large onion 2 diced garlic cloves 1 diced carrots 1 potato cut in 4 1 little courgette cut in chunks 1 diced celery stick 2 tsp of ras al hanout 1 tsp of sweet paprika and salt 2 pinches of cumin and pepper 2 pinches of turmeric or 1 pinch of saffron 1 chicken stock 200g of canned chickpeas 1 cup of vermicelli 2 tbsp of fresh coriander leaves
1. Place the oil in a large pan, add the chicken, the onion, garlic and fry to seal all over. 2. Add the all the vegetables (except tomato), the salt, all the spices, the chicken stock and 1tbsp of coriander and stir for a few minutes. 3. Add the tomato, stir 10 min over low heat and add 2 litres of water. 4. Bring to boil then reduce heat, cover and simmer 40 minutes on low heat 5. Add the chickpeas into the pan. 6. Take the chicken from the pan, remove all the meat from the bones, shred, put it back into the pan and simmer for another 10 minutes. 7. Add the vermicelli until done 8. Add the 2 tbsp of coriander 9. Simmer 1 minute and re-season if desired 10. Serve hot! Tip: Add few drops of lemon just before eating, it brings out the taste!

Maakouda Maakouda batata are delicious Moroccan potato patties or fritters. They are very popular in Moroccan families and this crispy dish might be eaten as starters or as a side.
Preparation time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves 4 Preparation
Ingredients
1. Boil the potatoes in salted water until they become soft.
1 kg of potatoes
2. Drain the boiled potatoes, peel them, let them cool and mash them with a fork.
1 onion finely chopped
3. Mix the mashed potatoes with the onion, garlic, herbs and spices. 4. Make small balls from the paste and press them by the palm of hand.
2 minced garlic cloves 3 tsp of chopped fresh coriander and/or parley 1 tsp of salt
5. Dip the patties in the eggs (optional) then in flour.

6. Fry them in very hot olive oil on both sides until they are golden brown.

Ingredients 6 tbsp of extra-virgin olive oil 2 large Spanish onions, thinly sliced 1 large pinch of saffron threads 4 meaty lamb shanks (about 1 pound each) Salt and black pepper 1 tbsp of Ras-el-hanout 1 tbsp of sweet paprika, plus more for dusting 2 tsp of ground cumin 400g of chopped tomatoes 1 tsp of fresh parsley and 1 tsp of fresh coriander 3 medium boiling potatoes, cut into chunks 3 large celery ribs, cut into chuncks 2 large carrots cut into chunks 2 red peppers cut into chunks 3 medium courgettes cut into chuncks 400g of chickpeas, rinsed and drained 400g of couscous 2 tbsp of butter 2 tbsp of slivered mint leaves Harissa, for serving

Preparation 1. In a very large pan, fry the onions with the olive oil until they soften. Stir occasionally. 2. In a small bowl, crumble the saffron into 2 tbsp of hot water and let stand for at least 10 min. 3. Season the lamb shanks with salt and black pepper and dust with paprika. 4. Add the lamb shanks to the pan and cook over moderate heat. Turn occasionally until the shanks are well browned. 5. Stir in the 1 tbsp of paprika, the cumin, the ras-el-hanout and cook 1 min. 6. Add the tomatoes and 3 quarts of water and bring to a boil over moderately high heat. 7. Add the saffron and its soaking liquid, the parsley, the coriander and a large pinch of salt. 8. Reduce the heat to low, cover partially and simmer until the lamb is tender, about 2 hours. 9. Transfer the lamb shanks to a large plate and cover with foil. 10. Add the potatoes, celery and carrots to the pan, cover and simmer over moderate heat during 10min. 11. Add the red peppers and courgettes and simmer uncovered during 10 min. 12. Remove from the heat, set aside 1 cup of the cooking liquid and stir in the chickpeas. 13. Remove the meat from the lamb shanks and cut it into 3/4-inch pieces. Return the meat to the stew. 14. In a large pan, melt the butter, add the couscous and cook over moderate heat, stirring, during 3 min. 15. Stir in 2 cups of water, the reserved 1 cup of cooking liquid and a large pinch of salt and bring to a boil. 16. Cover, remove from the heat and let stand until the liquid has been absorbed. Fluff with a fork. 17. Season the lamb stew with salt and pepper and mound the couscous on a large, high-sided platter.

Baklawa Sweet and crunchy, this dessert is perfect for all the family.
Preparation time: 40 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Preparation 1. Mix the almonds with the sugar, the cinnamon in a bowl. 2. Add the orange blossom water until that hold together well and set aside. 3. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. 4. Carefully unwrap the phyllo dough from the plastic sleeve. 5. Cut the sheets in half with scissors or a sharp knife if necessary, making sheets larger than your pan. 6. Brush your pan with butter. 7. Layer six sheets of phyllo, making sure to brush each with melted butter. 8. Add the nut mixture in an even layer. Pat it down with a spatula to flatten. 9. Layer another 6 sheets of phyllo always brushing each with melted butter. 10. Score the top layer of phyllo, making sure not to go past the top filling layer. 11. Cut the baklawa into diamond shapes, jab a whole blanched almond on each diamond, and brush with butter. 12. Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for about 45 minutes or until the phyllo turns a rich golden color. 13. Meanwhile, heat the honey in a saucepan and simmer over medium high for about 10 minutes. 14. Remove the honey from the heat and stir in with a little orange blossom water or the lemon juice. 15. Allow the syrup to cool slightly. 16. When the baklawa is out of the oven and still warm, ladle the syrup carefully into the pan. 17. Baklava can be refrigerated or stored at room temperature. Tip: Replace 500g from the almonds with coarsely ground nuts, walnuts or pistachios to savour new tastes!

Eid al-Fitr Eid al-Fitr is a day of joy as it’s a day of thanks to Allah. He offers us the opportunity to fast during one month with all the rewards associated with this act, so let’s take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy the day of Eid al-Fitr! Below are some of the Sunnahs of the Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) related to Eid which we should try and carry out:

Zakaat al-Fitr Zakaat al-Fitr is the name given to charity which is distributed at the end of the fast of Ramadhan. It has two main purposes: provide the fasting person the means of making up for their errors during the month of fasting and to allow poor and needy groups of society to feast and rejoice for the sake of Allah (SWT). The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “The fasting of the month of fasting will be hanging between earth and heavens and it will not be raised up to the Divine Presence without paying the Zakaat al-Fitr.”
Who is entitled to Zakaat al-Fitr?
When do I pay my Zakaat al-Fitr?
5. Freeing captives / slaves (Fee al-Riqab)
Zakaat al-Fitr is obligatory for Muslims, and once missed, cannot be made up. In order for it to be accepted as Zakaat, it must be given before Eid prayers: “Whoever pays it before the time of prayer, it is an accepted Zakaat, and whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just a kind of charity (sadaqah).” (Abu Dawood, 1371)
How much do I donate? The amount of Zakaat is the same for everyone regardless of age and income. The minimum amount is one Sa’ (two handfuls) of food, grain or dried fruit for each member of the family, although it is more common nowadays to send equivalent money abroad. Many masjids and charities recommend donating £4-£5 for each member of the household including children, and this is given by the head of the house before the day of Eid. It is important to note that Zakaat al-Fitr is different to the Zakaat on income (Zakaat al-Maal) which equates to 2.5% of your assets.
