CEO MESSAGE Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu Labbaik, Allahummalabbaik (O my Lord, here I am at Your service, here I am)- these are the words which are uttered every year by millions as they come to worship their Lord. As we enter the Hajj season, I hope those of you who are blessed enough to repeat these words, enjoy the fruits of the experience of a lifetime. Hajj is the blessed and spiritual journey where Muslims of different ages, cultural backgrounds and nationalities from around the world unite through invitation from the Almightly, to visit His house and have the opportunity to be granted forgiveness in the most blessed of places. Hajj is also a time to reflect and make dua. This year the Ummah has experienced much pain. The Syrian tragedy has raged on, atrocities in Gaza have continued, Muslims in Rohingya are still suffering and our brothers

and sisters in China are being tested. We should hold these brothers and sisters close to our hearts during this blessed period. My prayers are with those that are undertaking this spiritual journey of a lifetime. May Allah make it easy for you and accept your Hajj. For those of us who are not performing Hajj, may we use this time as an inspiration to renew our intention to make the journey and to seek closeness to Him, inshAllah. Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have mentioned: “For an accepted Hajj (mabroor), there is no reward besides Jannah (Paradise).” (Bukhari and Muslim) `Abdullah ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) quoted the Prophet as saying: “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House of Allah, and fasting in Ramadhan.” (Bukhari and Muslim) “Pilgrimage to the house of Allah is a bounded duty unto mankind for him who has the means to find the way thereunto, and whosoever disbelieves, then verily Allah is free and independent from the entire universe.” (Surah Aale Imraan, Verse 97).

“Allah has made the Ka’bah, the Sacred House, an asylum of security and Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimage) for mankind...”

Allah (SWT) says in the holy Qur’an:

“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs Umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.” (Surah Al Baqarah, Verse 158) Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I heard the Prophet say: ‘Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly (during the Hajj), will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

The Holy Ka’bah K E Y F E AT U R E S “Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for all kinds of beings. In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham); whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence).”

The Ka’bah ‘Ka’bah’ in Arabic means a high place with respect and prestige. The word Ka’bah may also mean a cube. Other names include Bait ul Ateeq - meaning the earliest and ancient or independent, and Bait ul Haram the honorable house.

TOP TIPS

Tips and advice on how to prepare yourself for the momentous journey of Hajj. Hajj is an act of worship that is performed in peace, and with single minded devotion. There are a number of simple, yet important things you can do to get in the right frame of mind for this unique experience. Since Hajj is a once in a lifetime experience for most people, the importance of early and adequate preparation cannot be over-emphasised. The following guidelines are intended to get you started in the right direction to prepare you as much as possible for this momentous journey of self discovery, self-appraisal, and spiritual enlightenment. Since individual needs and preferences vary widely you will, in all probability, add to the list as you prepare for the journey.

Prerequisites Of Hajj

Preparation before you travel

• •

18

Your intention must be to perform Hajj solely for the sake of Allah. Considerations of pleasing or impressing others with your show of piety should never be a factor All Hajj expenses must be paid out of money obtained through legitimate (Halal) means. Money obtained through illegitimate or doubtful means is not acceptable. All of your debts and financial obligations must be fully discharged before you start your journey You must make an honest effort to resolve your outstanding differences with others and seek forgiveness from those you may have hurt in any way in the past. This is based on specific instructions of the Prophet and must be followed for the Hajj to be meaningful

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

• •

• • •

Make at least 2 photo copies of all your official documents Keep Saudi Riyals and your local currency with you Finding a Hajj group that organizes motivational reminders & guidelines on how to perform the various rituals correctly is beneficial. However it is pivotal that you also educate yourself about every aspect of Hajj, from the day to day rituals and activities to the different Du’as that can be said Make a planner to remind yourself of day to day activities Review the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad and Prophet Ibraheem (AS). Aim to be fit as possible before you go and get into the habit of walking long distances. This will prepare you for long periods of travelling without transport that you will

inevitably endure during your Hajj journey

General Advice while you are there • • •

Get sufficient sleep to maintain your energy levels Keep yourself hydrated and drink plenty of water. In the Masjid al Haram there are plenty of Zam Zam reserves Do no overindulge in food. Eat food that is sufficient to nourish and revitalize you and always keep dates with you.

In Masjid al-Haram • •

When offering Salah, ensure that you arrive early in order to secure your spot for prayer The Sa’ee has several floors and the basement is usually cooler and emptier

How to make the most of your Hajj spiritually •

In Mina, Arafah, and Muzdalifah •

Schedule bathroom trips in Makkah, Mina, Arafah, and Muzdalifah between 1.5 to 2 hours before the prayer at which the queues will be the shortest On the day of Arafah, leave early towards Arafah and travel on foot. When leaving Arafah, leave after the Maghrib adhan and offer your Maghrib and Isha salah in Muzdalifah When pelting stones at the Jamarat, do so in groups and avoid the ground floor – where stampedes can occur

Toilet and wudu •

Toilets around the Hajj sites are mostly squatting toilets, therefore prepare yourselves by wearing appropriate

• • •

Keep a notebook to record names of people, their du’as and your own personal du’as. The notebook can also be used as a diary to record your experiences during your Hajj journey Plan ahead the conversation you will be having with your Lord. Empty your heart and soul to your Lord and weep to your heart’s content Only keep a phone for emergency use and stay as far away from your life back home as possible. Instead, embrace the opportunity that Allah (SWT) has given you and submit yourself to him and this journey for the sake of him. Always stay conscious of your purpose during Hajj; that you are working for the Akhirah (Hereafter) Constantly make istighfaar and remind Allah (SWT) of His supremacy Always aim to go that extra bit further and plan out each day how you could increase your Ibaadah (worship) Be patient! Hajj is a huge physical, emotional and spiritual test starting from the time one makes their intention until the end. Patience is necessary to pass each stage of the test. There will be several situations which may anger you. In these situations, make Du’a and dhikr and keep asking Allah (SWT) for strength and patience. Anytime you endure hardship, don’t panic, just renew your intention and trust that Allah (SWT) will guide you through it inshAllah.

Day 1 8th Dhul Hijjah The first official day of Hajj is 8th Dhul Hijjah in which pilgrims travel from Makkah to Mina. Prior to this, pilgrims put on Ihram and complete Umrah (if performing Hajj Tamattu’). They spend the day and night in large tents.

Makkah Al Mukarramah

STAGES OF HAJJ Day 4 & 5

Mina

Mina

10th-13th Dhul Hijjah Pilgrims return to Mina after Dhur and spend the 11th, 12th and 13th day of Dhul Hijjah there in which they stone the three Jamarat starting with the smallest using 7 pebbles for each. The act of stoning commemorates the three attempts the devil made to tempt the Prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salaam). The Prophet rejected all three of the devil’s attempts, stoning him and driving him away. Pilgrims may leave after the 12th if they wish.

After the 12th Dhul Hujjah Pilgrims return to Makkah and make a farewell Tawaf. Sa’ee does not form part of the Farewell Tawaf. All pilgrims are required to leave the country by 10th Muharaam which is around a month after Hajj.

20

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

Day 2 9th Dhul Hijjah

Arafah (Mount of Mercy)

Pilgrims leave in the morning and travel to the plain of Arafat. This is known as the ‘Day of Arafat’ where pilgrims stand or sit near the Mount of Mercy asking Allah for forgiveness, devote time to prayers and repent for their sins. The Prophet (saw) said:

”The best du’aa is the du’aa on the day of ‘Arafah and the best thing I and the Prophets before me have ever said is: Laa Ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa Shareeka lah!” [Malek and at-Tirmidhi]

Makkah Al Mukarramah

On this day Muslims from around the world also join them in spirit by fasting. After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah which is between Arafat and Mina. It is here where they collect small stone pebbles to be used the following day.

Jamaraat

Day 3

Muzdalifah

10th Dhul Hijjah On the third day pilgrims move back to Mina to Jamrat al- Aqabah and throw stone pebbles at pillars and remember the story of Shaytan when he tried to persuade Ibrahim (alayhis salam) not to sacrifice his son. The stones represent Ibrahim’s rejection of Shaytan and his steadfastness. It is here that men shave their hair and women trim their hair. Meat is slaughtered and given away to the poor. This is symbolic of Ibrahim who was ready to sacrifice his son upon Allah’s command. This day also marks Eid ul Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice). Pilgrims return to Makkah and perform Tawaf around the Kabah which is known as Tawaf al Ifadhah. They also perform Sa’ee which is walking 7 times on the Safa and Marwa hills. After Tawaf Al-Ifadhah the state of Ihram is completely ended and all restrictions are lifted.

Types of Hajj There are three ways of performing the Hajj:

Hajj al-Ifrad (Single) This refers to entering into Ihram only for the intention of performing Hajj and taking it off only at the end of Hajj.

Hajj al-Qiran (Combined) This refers to entering into Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj at the same time. Umrah will be performed first followed by Hajj. The pilgrim must remain in Ihram until the end of Hajj.

Hajj al-Tamatt'u (Interrupted) Pilgrims that come to Saudi Arabia from outside countries usually perform this type of Hajj. This means that the Ihram is put with the intention to perform Umrah only first. Then on 8th Dhul Hijjah, the Ihram is put on with the intention to perform Hajj. Putting on the Ihram Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: A person stood up and asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What clothes may be worn in the state of ihram?" The Prophet replied, "Do not wear a shirt or trousers, or any headgear (e.g. a turban), or a hooded cloak; but if somebody has no shoes he can wear leather stockings provided they are cut short off the ankles, and also, do not wear anything perfumed with Wars or saffron, and the Muhrima (a woman in the state of Ihram) should not cover her face, or wear gloves." (Sahih Bukhari) Al-Ihram means prohibition or making unlawful

Ihram for Men •

At the Miqaat, men need to remove all stitched clothes and on put on two white clothes (usually two long towels)

One of the white pieces of cloth (izhar) is wrapped at the lower part of the body from the waist down to just above the ankles.

A belt can be used to hold up the lower cloth

The second white cloth is draped around the shoulders, covering only the left shoulder. The right shoulder and arm open should be left open for movement

Men may wear footwear which does not cover their ankles or the central bone of the upper part of the feet. Sandals would be the most suitable type of footwear for men to wear.

Ihram for Women Women are not required to wear any specific types of clothing whilst in a state of Ihram. They may wear anything Islamically permissible for Ihram.

Additional Points Ensure you enter Ihram prior to reaching the point of Miqaat (if you are landing in Jeddah, you must have made the intention prior to landing as Jeddah is regarded as being within the Miqaat area) Your Ihram cloth can be changed as often as you like and does not take you out of your state of Ihram. There are various actions which are prohibited in a state of Ihram. These include: backbiting, haunting animals, sexual intercourse, sharing hair or clipping nails. ACWY Vaccination The meningitis (ACWY) vaccination is a requirement for all pilgrims wishing to embark on Hajj or Umrah. Visas to travel to Saudi Arabia are not issued until proof of the vaccination is shown. Pilgrims on Hajj or Umrah are required to present a certificate of vaccination with ACWY, issued at least 10 days, but not more than 3 years before arrival The vaccination is required due to the highly crowded conditions during the pilgrimage which increases the risks of contracting infectious diseases such as meningitis. There are various clinics taking place throughout the UK. To book your vaccination, contact your local Mosques and community centres for further information.

MERS-COV (Corona Virus) Alongside the risk of Meningitis, there are other diseases which require pilgrims to take precautionary measures, including the ‘Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.’ (MERS-CoV). Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a viral respiratory disease that was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012, caused by a novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The Saudi Ministry of Health has recommended that the elderly (over the age of 65 years) and those with chronic diseases (e.g. heart disease and diabetes), pregnant women and children (under 12) should postpone the performance of the Hajj. A full list of those not recommended to travel can be found on their website. As MERS-CoV spreads by close contact, the Saudi Ministry of Health advises all pilgrims to adhere to common public health guidelines, for example: regularly washing hands, avoiding direct contact with infected people, using disposable tissues when sneezing or coughing and maintaining good personal hygiene. For further information please visit the Saudi Ministry of Health website:

By Adama Munu

My Hajj Experience I’ve often joked to people who find out that I have performed Hajj at the age of 21 that many young people go to Malibu and Ibiza but at that tender age, Allah destined that I would go to Hajj Masha Allah.

Alhamdulillah, one of my male relatives, Uncle Minkailu, a government minister in Sierra Leone, decided that he was going to give me the money to go to Makkah (May Allah preserve and bless him). It was absolutely unexpected. But it demonstrated that truly Allah was inviting me as a guest to His house. That was incredibly special for me.

It’s encouraging to see many more young people becoming ‘Hajjis’. A generation ago or more, it was widely expected that you should be aged, and almost certainly you would have committed your life savings towards what is a breathtaking journey to Makkah.

At the time that I went to Hajj, I was going through a particularly difficult moment in my life, which happened prior to the trip. I imagined that my trip would be completely spoilt. But in many instances, the greatest journeys are often taken at the most difficult points in one’s life. As such, we are being prepared for something great. The greatest journey ever undertaken by a human being was undoubtedly Al-Isra wa Miraj by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, and this occurred at a time known as the ‘Year of Sorrow’ where

the loss of two of his most beloved companions took its toll and the onslaught of persecution by the Makkans weighed heavily upon the Muslims. I sought solace in this simple yet illustrious example. Turning my experience into one from which I could grow and be shaped as well as enjoy. Many people refer to the first time that they laid their eyes upon the Ka’bah. How riveting and exonerating it was for their very being. The truth is there are no words. But if there are any to describe that moment, I would say that it was like seeing an old friend. A friend I’d always had, a friend I’d always known. It might seem cliché and maybe even cheesy, but that was how it felt. As if this long standing friendship had always been. But the truth is, the Ka’bah is something that many of us visit 5 times a day-at least on a spiritual plane. Seeing it in person however, is a moment to be treasured.

Insight from the Islam Channel Hajj Crew For the past six years, Islam Channel viewers have been able to watch broadcasts of the Hajj followed by the popular documentary Footsteps of Ibraheem. But what really goes on behind the scenes? What is their daily schedule like? To find out more, The Dawah Project team caught up with some of the Islam Channel TV Crew who shares their thoughts, plans and aspirations for Hajj 2014.

Majid Khan Producer

Leading the crew, Majid’s main role will be taking care of the operation, logistics and content of the programmes. Every day is a new day and thus, the crew is required to be alert and innovative if faced with challenges - the show must always go on! He said, “The Hajj season is a peak time for Islam Channel. We have a big responsibility as millions of people will be watching the Channel. I feel privileged to undertake this year’s Hajj filming as I know there are many Muslims that are not able to perform Hajj this year. We also have a considerable number of non Muslim viewers who are intrigued to know more about the largest human gathering.” 32

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

As done in the past, live Hajj broadcasts will be shown in the morning and in the evening including interviews with pilgrims from various backgrounds. The daily half hour programme Footsteps of Ibraheem, will provide a comprehensive insight into the rites and rituals of Hajj. Viewers appreciate how the team showcases the programme in interesting ways, providing exciting and awe-inspiring footage, yet never failing to keep the subject of reflection at the core of its message. “It is important that we educate the audience about Islam and this year we will be focusing on history and stories based on important events and figures.”

Yasir Khan

Graphics Editor Yasir’s main role this year will be working as Graphics Editor for the Footsteps of Ibraheem documentary, requiring him to edit footage on a daily basis prior to airing on the Channel. That’s a new episode everyday which means he is always working under pressure. Being Yasir’s second time attending Hajj, he described his typical day from last year: “Hajj 2013 was an amazing experience for me. Before we went there, I was told by my production manager that four walls of my room will be my best friend for the next month and that’s exactly what it was! Most of the time, I was the last member to go to sleep because I had to edit a lot of footage within a strict time frame!”

Jonathan Fletcher Camera Operator

Having embraced Islam seven years ago, Hajj will also be a new experience for Jonathan. He is looking forward to visiting the place where Islam was introduced and feels it will be a heartening experience. Jonathan’s duty will include preparing the sets as well as assisting Majid in portraying the narrative through the lenses. It is physically demanding to film live on a daily basis from operating the camera, maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given shot. He did not shy away from stating his fears and humorously said, “I hate the heat! But it is going to be an amazing journey!”

Due to last year’s Hajj, Yasir feels more confident and ready for the unexpected. He explained, “No matter how much preparation we do, things can change depending on the logistics and location. Thus, from my side I will be fully prepared for anything that will come my way. This year we will continue to produce quality content with visuals like you have never seen before.”

Paul Wick

Multi Skilled Operator Paul embraced Islam seven months ago whilst working at Islam Channel. Thus, going to Saudi Arabia and being part of filming Hajj this year, this will be a new and exciting experience for him. He said, “I take my work obligations seriously. This includes everything from camera work, lighting, sound, broadcasting and much more. I am really looking forward to seeing the Ka’bah and the Prophet’s Mosque amongst everything else”.

The Day of Arafah The Day of Arafah is the second day of the Hajj Pilgrimage, falling before Eid al Adha. The standing at Arafah praying and seeking forgiveness is of paramount significance, reminding us of the Day of Resurrection, of how we will all stand equal before Allah.

36

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

At dawn, the pilgrims in Makkah will make their way from Mina to gather on a hillside and plain nearby, called Mount Arafah, which is where Prophet Muhammad gave his farewell sermon in the last year of his life. Often they will set out after sunrise to attend the Khutbah of Arafat which takes place just before Dhuhr prayer. It was on this day, referred to also as the 9th of Dhu’l-Hijja or Yawm Al-‘Arafah that the following verse was revealed to the people of Makkah, when Allah (SWT) says:

“This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favour on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion” (Quran 5:3) There are many blessings that are to be had on this day, with Muslims often fasting together and spending additional hours in supplication

and contemplation, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad who was reported by Muslim to have never missed fasting on this day. We are told in various Ahadeeths that fasting on this day expiates sins committed the year prior and the year following it:

"Fasting on the Day of 'Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year” (Reported by all except al-Bukhari and at-Tirmidhi) However, fasting is prohibited by Muslims who are on the Hajj itself as a mercy to ease the difficulty of their pilgrimage. The Day of Arafah is said to also be a day on which people are saved from the fires of Jahannam. In Sahih Muslim it was narrated from Aa'ishah that Prophet Muhammad said:

'There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, 'What do these people want?' Our Prophet

mentioned that:

"The best invocation on the day of Arafah, and the best of all the invocations I ever offered or other Prophets (peace be upon them all) before me ever offered is; "There is no god but Allah: He is Unique; He has no partner, the whole universe is for Him and for Him is the praise, and He has power over all things." The Day of Arafah is expected to be around October 3rd this year, subject to the lunar calendar.

QURBANI U D H I YA

By Zahra Dulfeker

“And complete the Hajj and 'Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.” Surah Al Baqarah 2:196

S

uppose a man is fortunate to be blessed with the precious gift of a child, whom it is his responsibility to nurture and protect against harm. Imagine if that same man was then commanded By Allah (swt) to slaughter his child, the son that he had loved and cared for, how would he react? And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: “O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allah), so look what you think!” He said: “O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Insha’ Allah (if Allah will), you shall find me of As-Sabirin (the patient ones).” Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead. And We called out to him: “O Abraham! You have fulfilled the dream (vision)!” Verily! Thus do We reward the Muhsinun (good-doers). Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice

40

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

(i.e. a ram). And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times. (Sura Saffat, verses 102-108) Having the will power to conform to such a command, comes down to one simple and righteous act. This act is sacrifice (udhiya or Qurbani) for the sake of Allah (SWT). The Arabic word Udhiya translates to blood sacrifice and Qurbani is a Persian and Urdu term derived from the Arabic word Qurban, which translates to any act that is carried out to seek the pleasure of Allah (swt). The act of Udhiya or Qurbani involves slaughtering an animal and distributing some or all of its meat to the poor, as a means of remembrance of the incomparable sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was willing to make for the sake of Allah (swt). The act of Udhiya is a demonstration of total submission to Allah (SWT) and proof of complete obedience to Allah’s will or command.

of Qurbani Choice of Animal Examples of animals that can be slaughtered in order of righteousness are camels, cows, sheep and goats. The choice of animal is not restricted to its gender, however the animal must be in free from any disability, it must be healthy and above a certain age.

Shares within Qurbani Qurbani animals are bought in shares. Sheep and goats have only one share whereas cows and camels have 7 shares. Therefore a single person’s qurbani can be fulfilled with a sheep or goat whereas 7 peoples Qurbani will be fulfilled with a cow or sheep.

Who is obliged to offer Qurbani? Qurbani is ‘wajib’ (compulsory) on every Muslim who is mature (has reached puberty), who is of a sound state of mind and who possesses 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent in money, personal ornaments, stock in trade or any other form of wealth which is beyond his/ her basic needs. Each adult member of a family who possesses that much wealth must offer his/her own ‘Qurbani’ separately.

When is Qurbani performed? Qurbani can be performed on the 10th, 11th and 12th day of Dhul Hijjah. However , it is best performed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah and is only accepted after the completion of the Eid prayers. If the three days have passed and

a person is unable to perform their sacrifice, then they should give the price of their Qurbani as sadaqah. Pilgrims of Hajj must offer their Qurbani after the stoning of the jamarat (pillars representing shaytan) and before the cutting of their hair in the haram.

The Sunnah Method of Qurbani It is preferable for a Muslim to slaughter the animal of Qurbani with his/her own hands. Nevertheless, if one is not able to do so then they may request someone else to carry out the Qurbani on their behalf. In this instance, it is preferable that they are present at the time of slaughter, however their absence does not render their qurbani invalid. It is a Sunnah to lay the animal with its face towards the Qiblah, and to recite the following verse of the Holy Quran: I, being upright, turn my face towards the One who has created the heavens and the earth, and I am not among those who associate partners with Allah. ( Al-An’am, 6:79)

Distribution of the meat from the Qurbani Although the person offering a Qurbani is permitted to keep all its meat for their own use, it is preferable to distribute the meat into three. One-third should be distributed among the poor, one-third should be given to their relatives and the final third should be kept for personal use. However no product of the Qurbani can be sold.

MUSLIM CHARITY HELPING THE NEEDY

The City

Madinah of

By Rohima Mirza

Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet

said of his Masjid:

“Whosoever performs forty Salaah in my Masjid (in succession), not missing (even) one Salaah, (then) he is guaranteed freedom from the Fire (of Jahannam), redemption from punishment and he becomes immune to hypocrisy.”

T

he holy city of Madinah Munawwarah, formerly known as Yathrib, is a place beloved by the Prophet Muhammad and steeped in religious significance for Muslims all over the world. Madinah was the city that provided refuge to the Prophet and his early Companions, from the oppression of the Makkans, and is where the early Muslim community developed and grew. The Prophet’s mosque, the Masjid Al Nabawi is located in Madinah, which is also where he is buried. Although a visit to Madinah is not an obligatory part of the Hajj, Muslims will generally incorporate it into their pilgrimage package, to benefit from the blessings can be obtained. THE FESTIVAL OF SACRIFICE The celebration of Eid ul Adha falls on the tenth day of the Islamic month Dhul Al Hijjah and is the second annual Eid celebration for Muslims worldwide.

EID

UL ADHA

Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated in remembrance of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismaeel, in response to the command of Allah (SWT). In return, Allah (SWT) stopped Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) from sacrificing his son and replaced him with a ram.

SUNNAH ACTS PERFORMED ON EID There are various Sunnah acts and etiquettes that can be performed on the day of Eid. These include:

DHUL DUA

AL HIJJAH

This is where the ritual of sacrifice came about. Eid-ul-Adha also marks the end of struggle undertaken by pilgrims observing the Hajj pilgrimage each year. There are ample opportunities to gain benefit and reward during the ten days of Dhul Al Hijjah and also the day of Eid-ul-Adha.

This blessed day should be enjoyed by everyone, who by the grace of Allah (SWT) has been given the honour of being able to witness this celebration. Therefore, eat, drink and spend time with your families. But always remember to have a balance and keep the remembrance of Allah (SWT) in your tongues, actions and hearts.

Islam Channel journalist Yasmin Khatun writes about her experience visiting refugees fleeing violence in Chad and the spiritual journey of this world exemplified through the Hajj. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, only 11 out of the 162 countries it covers are not involved in conflict. Over the last two months, Operation Protective Edge in Gaza has led to more than 2,000 fatalities and over the last three years the death toll in Syria has reached at least 200,000. Dealing with loss and conflict should not be treated as strange in Islam but something we have in actuality become accustomed to.

A

s the month of the sacred Hajj falls upon us, unity becomes a prevalent thought. More than 2 million Muslims arrived into Makkah last year in order to fulfill their command and greater numbers are expected this year. That is 2 million people out of more than 1 billion Muslims scattered throughout the world all from different colours, cultures and traditions. There is no doubt in my mind that this year, like many years before it as well as the prayers for ourselves and close ones, our brothers and sisters throughout the world will feature significantly. Earlier this year, I travelled to the Chad with the Islam Channel team to visit refugees from the Central African Republic . It was an unforgettable journey to understand the journey of others 48

Hajj Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

and a means to acquire knowledge. A realisation that we know little of the reality faced by our brothers and sisters came to me very quickly. The blistering heat of the African sun, the lack of accessible clean water, sanitation facilities, and the list goes on. This was the situation they had run too, this was the safe haven away from violence. Whilst in Chad, I sat in a hotel room on the corner of my bed fearful on my first day wondering if someone was going to break in and it came to mind as to what must be going through the hearts and minds of those under the tents I visited in the morning and those in tents all over the world. As I worried about my luggage and not having my preferred shower gel, I thought of the refugees who had fled their homes with

nothing but the clothes on their backs, leaving behind their families, businesses and homes. When I was told on a sixteen-hour drive through a dirt track there was no restroom for me to use, I remembered the fly infested holes I saw in the camps and the fact that 2.5 billion people worldwide have inadequate sanitation facilities. We may be away from our natural home and as travellers in this world, but to be in this world continually running or attempting to hide from violence is something I find difficult to comprehend. For us, here, so far away from so much turmoil sometimes it’s puzzling in what we should actually do. But remembering we’re on this path together is something we must always re-

member. It can feel a heavy burden and I myself sometimes feel like I want to close my eyes and hope not to see any more suffering. I watch it, I read it, I search for it and document it. But I am as you are and we are all a part of one body and this time of the year exemplifies that. The Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon) comes together at this sacred time to wear the same shrouds and wash with the same water, to circle the same box and to run through the same lengths, we are together on our journey. Look at what is around us and don’t forget the suffering of the Ummah. Maybe if we can understand what is taking place we will attain the ability to combat it.

CHARITY TESTIMONIALS

One year ago, the conflict in Syria was at the forefront of our concerns. That crisis continues but alongside it the tragedy of Gaza has left a searing impression on the hearts and minds of Muslims everywhere. Islamic Help has been striving to ease the suffering of particularly the people of Syria and now the Gazan population. As the time for Hajj and Qurbani nears, our efforts in those countries continue. Alongside emergency supplies of food, water, medicines and Qurbani projects, we are working on long term projects including education, sustainability and lately our Gaza 100 Water Challenge. This will see the Palestinian Water Authority constructing a new plant to provide clean domestic water every day to nearly 10,000 residents in Gaza, thereby reducing the risk of disease and ill-health. In many countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, families wait in anticipation for Eid-ul-Adha to arrive so they can receive fresh meat because they are so poor that they cannot afford to buy meat. Eid is the only time of the year many people are able to eat meat. Through the generous support of Islam Channel viewers and our donors, Muslim Charity is able to implement the Qurbani/Udhiya in over a dozen countries around the world. An important aspect of Qurbani with Muslim Charity is the emphasis we have on contributing towards local communities through the utilisation of skins of animals for the manufacturing of leather products. Hundreds of families are able to benefit from work related to animal skin and earn their livelihoods from it, thus ensuring long-term and sustainable benefit to local communities through the Muslim Charity Qurbani programme. On behalf Muslim Aid, I would like to convey our sincerest good wishes to all our supporters on this blessed occasion of Hajj and Eid ul Adha. May Allah (SWT) grant us all happiness and joy on this auspicious occasion. In 2013, Muslim Aid reached over 260,000 people through its Qurbani Programme and in’shaa’Allah we aim to reach even more in 2014. Muslim Aid’s Qurbani Programme is not just about providing people with sustenance, but also supporting the livelihood of local farmers who provide and slaughter animals for the benefit of the affected community. This ensures that people receive continuous support, helping them break out of the cycle of poverty. Let Muslim Aid help you with your Qurbani obligations, and remember us in your duas as we indeed remember you in ours. Hamid Azad, CEO of Muslim Aid

Words cannot express the gratitude that UK Islamic Mission has for your generous contribution in making a change to the lives of thousands of people around the world. The help efforts and concern shown by Islam Channel viewers and the community showed the world that the Muslim Ummah still cares. An overwhelming sense of unity was particularly felt in the holy month of Ramadan where the victims of Gaza were helped by your generous donations. What will you sacrifice this Eid al-Adha? You can share the joy of Eid al-Adha this Dhul Hijjah by distributing meat to over half a million individuals in twenty countries. Many of whom only experienced the taste of fresh meat last year, on the day of Eid, so help UK Islamic Mission to distribute Qurbani to put a smile on the face of orphans, widows, the poor and needy this Eid al-Adha. www.ukim.org/qurbani/

Qurbani: fulfil an obligation and feed destitute orphans For many of the fortunate ones amongst us, our thoughts turn towards the Hajj and Qurbani which commemorates the events of Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail (May Allah Almighty send Salaam upon His Prophets). Not all of us, however, are in a position to enjoy this day; it is our duty to ensure others are also able to celebrate with us. With your support, last year we were able to carry out your Qurbani in several countries throughout the world. Orphans in Need is here to help you fulfil this important duty. We take great care in selecting our animals, ensuring them to be of superior quality. Rest assured that your Qurbani will be offered to the highest standards, with the meat going towards feeding needy orphans and widows. By performing your Qurbani with Orphans in Need, you will ensure that a smile is brought to their faces. Tel: 0207 100 8866 54
