more inclusive narrative for all right minded people. This year, the theme is ‘Freedom for All’. If you look at the word ‘freedom’ in the dictionary, you’ll find a range of meanings, several of which resonate with the GPU’s aims. For example ‘freedom’ is associated with the promotion of shared values, understanding and respect for all, ‘freedom’ is associated with having the right to participate in democratic processes whether in the UK or internationally, being free to enjoy political or civil liberties.
Message from Chairman Dear respected Brothers and Sisters, I greet you with greetings of Peace, Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu With a fresh line up of individuals and organisations spanning the social, political and religious spectrum, we welcome you to The Global Peace & Unity Festival. Over the past five Festivals, The Global Peace and Unity Festival has established itself as a landmark event and is now recognised as the largest gathering of its kind across Europe, with over 100,000 attendees in 2010. The core aims of the GPU are to promote dialogue, exchange ideas and information, and work towards dispelling misunderstandings surrounding the multiculturalism and co-existence of faiths. With the insight, skills and experience that our internationally renowned speakers bring, the GPU is now better equipped than ever to help shape a 4
GPU 2013
The revolutionary waves of demonstrations and protests in the Eastern & Western hemispheres have created an ever increasing need for conveyance of ‘Freedom for All’. Citizens around the world are unjustly held captive for exercising their right to ‘freedom’ of speech, association, assembly, thought, religion, expression and choice. Today, the need for effective, inclusive vehicles to shape a more progressive and forward thinking society has never been greater. All of us have an important role to play in supporting such initiatives; we must recognise that non-action is simply not an option. Our current climate is such that it makes events like the GPU increasingly paramount. Now more than ever, it is imperative for us to unite and take a stand against oppression and the injustice that is taking place. The GPU offers a crucial platform for interfaith exchange of ideas towards fostering mutual understanding between people from every faith and background in a bid for greater community cohesion. I hope that you have an enjoyable time at the festival.
Mohamed Ali Harrath Chairman of The Global Peace & Unity Foundation

Muslim Debate Initiative Presenting Islam in the West Saturday 23rd November 11am - 12.15pm | Location: Main Exhibition Hall
To aims of the workshop is to equip Muslims to intellectually respond to questions and criticisms that they are increasingly finding themselves needing to address today. The format for this workshop will include an interactive presentation and Q&A session divided between two MDI Speakers: Abdullah al Andalusi - an international speaker, thinker and intellectual activist for Islam and Muslim affairs. Zara Faris - a graduate in Arabic & Islamic Studies from SOAS University (School of Oriental and African Studies). She has lived for a year in Egypt studying the Arabic language. She is now a Researcher and Speaker for the Muslim Debate Initiative (MDI).
Debate - “Is religion more trouble than it’s worth?” Sunday 24th November 6pm - 8.30pm | Location: Main Exhibition Hall
We increasingly hear prominent public figures make claims about the relevance of religion in modern society. For example, earlier this year, Prof Richard Dawkins attacked religion as ‘’redundant and irrelevant’’ during a debate against the former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams. MDI’s debate with a prominent Humanist will deal with the subject of the relevance of religion in society today - and will include discussions of the role of religion in public, and questions of whether it benefits or harms society overall. Speakers: Sami Zaatari - an international senior speaker for the Muslim Debate Initiative, and has taken part in several debates in both the United Kingdom, and the United States. Sami has extensively engaged in the field of inter-faith apologetics, both in a debate setting, as well as writing hundreds of articles on the related subject. Bob Churchill - Having worked professionally for two national humanist organisations, the British Humanist Association and the Uganda Humanist Association, and lately at the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), Bob has a unique perspective on “global Humanism”. 28

Islamic Help This year commemorates Islamic Help’s 10th anniversary, 10 landmark years which have seen a grassroots initiative flourish into a UK-registered charity and international NGO that has brought hope and help to countless numbers of people in 20 countries. Since Islamic Help was officially registered as a charity in the UK in October 2003, we have played a significant role in the delivery of aid and assistance during major crises including the Bam earthquake in Iran, the Pacific Ocean tsunami, the Pakistan earthquake and floods and the Haiti earthquake. We have provided food programmes, water projects and medical aid in some of the world’s poorest countries, from Africa to Asia. Most recently we have been, and continue to be, involved in aid delivery programmes in Syria and helping Syrian refugees in Jordan. Over the years, our Ramadan and Qurbani programmes have provided food for millions, but our desire to help those in need is not limited to just emergency aid or food and water. Our commitment to education has seen schools established in countries like Pakistan and Sudanand the rebuilding and restoration of the Darul Fadilah complex in Gaza. Other campaigns include Smiles Better and Mission Possible. 46

SKT Welfare SKT Welfare - a UK-registered charity - strives to help some of the world’s most deprived communities. Its patron is the world-renowned Syrian scholar, Sheikh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi. Along with its 100% donation policy, one of the key features of the charity is its insistence on not outsourcing any aspect of aid distribution; meaning members of SKT Welfare’s international team are present at all points in the supply chain, from donation, up until the handover of aid to its intended target audience. Having launched in 2008, SKT Welfare has provided aid in the UK, Pakistan, Morocco and Somalia. Since 2011, much of the charity’s work has focused on the crisis in Syria, and the spillover into neighbouring countries, most notably Turkey and Jordan. Help SKT Welfare save lives and make a difference; help us, and together, let’s #Stand4Syria.
