CEO MESSAGE
In preparation and planning it can easily be forgotten what Hajj is for. It is an act undertaken purely for the sake of Allah and for His pleasure alone. Our beloved Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayi wasalam) said that ‘If your Hijra is for Allah and His Messenger then it is indeed for Allah and His Messenger.” And the ultimate reward of a Hajj Mabrur is nothing short of Paradise and returning with the purity of a new-born child.
Dear respected brothers and sisters Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu With the month of Dhul Hijjah approaching, millions of Muslims will be retracing the sacred journey to Makkah. In Arabic, Hajj means “to continuously strive to reach one’s purpose”. It is the ultimate journey to the House of Allah - mentally, physically and spiritually. A journey of not so much going but in essence returning to our source - Allah.
Islam Channel is now in its tenth year and from news analysis, to religious and spiritual series, lifestyle shows and hard-hitting investigative documentaries, the Channel’s programmes offer a fresh and alternative approach to broadcast media. During the Hajj period, Islam Channel brings live daily broadcasts from the Hajj, the pinnacle of the Islamic calendar. The Hajj season offers viewers special programmes about the historic cities of Makkah and Madina, as well as crucial tips to performing the Hajj and important travel and health advice. Just as Hajj revives the spirit of unity, solidarity, understanding, empathy and generosity, let these be qualities which we
“The ultimate reward of a Hajj Mabrur is nothing short of Paradise and returning with the purity of a new-born child.” encapsulate in our lives and towards our fellow mankind. My prayers are with those that are undertaking this spiritual journey of a lifetime. May Allah make it easy for you and accept your Hajj. Praise be to Allah, we thank Him, seek His Help and His forgiveness. Ameen.

Patience
“Oh you who are patient, bear a little more, for only a little more remains.
(Ibn al-Qayyim)
By Yasmin Khatun Islam Channel Journalist & Producer
A month of sacrifice and obligation, Dhul alHijjah is the last month in the Islamic calendar, a month full of splendid history and one with an inescapable complexity and different showings of strength, both symbolic and beautiful but also a reminder of triumph.

A
s the year comes to an end, you may feel it hasn’t gone the way in which we may have planned or you haven’t been able to complete the acts of worship which you have wanted to pursue or on the reverse all that you may have wanted may be taking place, our reminder when in any of these states is that this dunya is but a temporary abode. This month symbolizes renewal, new beginnings and a cleansing and purification of our souls.
Dedication and patience are elements significant in Islam and there are no better examples of this than in our beloved prophets. Examples to us all, they are the deliverers of our faith and this month is engulfed with so much history. The last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (sallahu aluyhi wa salam) our RasulAllah at the top of Mount Arafat in which he reminded men of their duties, duties towards their women duties towards their people and their ultimate duty towards Allah.
The Hajj - our pilgrimage is enveloped inside of this time, a ritual practice and standing pillar of our faith. Over 3 million people annually travel to the sacred cities to perform their acts of worship, people not just from London or Astana but from each and every corner of the planet, all travelling for the sake of Allah. A time when you see people brown, beige, saffron and milk, rich and poor all bare with nothing more than single sheets, a time where adornments and plenty make no difference, where all that matters is but your dedication to your faith.
A story standing with many others, there is not one example but plenty, the symbolic unification of our parents Adam (alahyi wasalam) and Hawa at the top of this peak after calling to their for forgiveness and the day of Arafah when Musa (alayhi wasalam) led the Israelites through the sea and presented his courage, faith and ultimate trust in Allah. Examples to us all, we should remember the sacrifices made by those before us, and at this time of the year none comes to mind more so then Ibrahim (alahyi wasalam) when leaving his wife and young son he put his faith in Allah and did Allah not provide? Gushing springs of water lay where people to this day drink from, when asked to sacrifice his son he put his trust in Allah and was his strain not removed? Stories for us all
“So remember me, and I shall remember you”
(Surah Baqarah Verse 152)
to take from, the journey of the hajj and the month of Dhul-Hijjah is but a reminder to the names that Allah calls himself by and our obligations towards him. Around the world we may see much difficulty around us but Allah is our Lord, our protector and The Just. Remember your duties towards him and do your utmost to strive towards all that is good, after that; just trust Allah. As Allah says “So remember me, and I shall remember you” (Surah Baqarah verse 152).

A SHORT HISTORY OF
HAjJ By Tasnim Nazeer Freelance Journalist, Author and Poet
H
ajj is a spiritual pilgrimage to Makkah that sees an unprecedented number of Muslims, from all over the world; convene to perform the religious rites with the manner prescribed by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
is now known as Zam Zam. Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Palestine and was content that his family were safe and well provided for. Allah (Swt) then entrusted Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) to build the Kaaba with his son Is’mail and this was to be a place to gather and worship Allah (Swt). As the years passed Is’mail was blessed as a
The Hajj and the religious rites were first revealed by Allah (swt) to Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him), Is’mail placed his foot on the ground and as a miracle when he was infrom Allah (Swt) a spring of water gushed forth from the structed to bring his wife Hajira and earth, which is now known as Zam Zam. their son Ism’ail from Palestine to Makkah. Prophet and he delivered the message to the citizens of the desert toworship Allah (Swt). Allah (Swt) told Prophet Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) to leave his wife and “And remember when we showed Ibrahim child with some food and water, however the the site of the sacred house: Associate not sustenance soon ran short as a test to Haanything [in worship with me and purify My jira and her child. Hajira ran up the two hills House for those who circumambulate it [i.e. called Safa and Marwa seeking help in desperform tawaaf] and those who stand up for peration and then prayed to Allah (Swt) with prayer and those who bow down and make her child Is’mail to provide them with suste prostration (in prayer etc).” nance. Is’mail placed his foot on the ground and as a miracle from Allah (Swt) a spring of [Surah Al-Hajj 22:26] water gushed forth from the earth, which

Prophet Ibrahim would come to Makkah to perform Hajj every year, and after his death, this practice was continued by his son Is’mail.
The beloved Prophet rid the Kaaba of all its idols and reinstated all the rites of Hajj that had originally been prescribed by Allah (Swt) at the time of Prophet Ibrahim.
However, following the death of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Is’mail the Hajj rites were forgotten and changed as “And when you have completed your rites (of Hajj) then idolatry spread throughout Arabia, remember Allah as you remember your forefathers; nay the Kaaba was with a more vigorous remembrance.” filled with over 360 [Surah al-Baqarah 2:200] idols and immorality was spreading throughout the land. Centuries later Prophet Muhammad May Allah (Swt) grant us all the opportunity (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was born in the to perform Hajj in the manner of the Prophet same city as Prophet Ibrahim and spread the Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon message of monotheism and the oneness of him) and may our Hajj be accepted by Allah (Swt) throughout the land for 23 years. Almighty Allah (Swt).

Preparing For Hajj
Aside from the actual logistical aspects of the trip, pilgrims need to prepare spiritually, physically, mentally, and financially for this great act of worship.
Taqwa
Disease of the Heart
Taqwa is defined as a believer being aware of Allah in all that he does regardless of where they are. The term taqwa comes from the Arabic word ittaqa “to protect oneself”. Our Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa salam) also taught us to frequently ask Allaah to grant us guidance and also Taqwaa:
Hajj should be undertaken in a pure state. Ask forgiveness from people who you may have spoken ill of and safeguard your tongue from backbiting, arguing and complaining. “During Hajj there should not be obscenity, nor wickedness, nor arguing.” [Surah al-Baqarah 2:197]
Allaahumma innie as-alukal hudaa, wat-tuqaa, wal-‘afaaf, wal-ghinaa “O Allaah! I ask you for guidance, piety (at-Taqwaa), chastity and self-sufficiency.” (Muslim)

Hajj is a once in a lifetime pilgrimage to the house of Allah and like any great journey it requires preparation.
Hajj Brochure 2013 | Islam Channel
Prepare Yourself for the Physical Aspects
Study the Rulings (Fiqh) of Hajj
There will be times during Hajj which will require you to walk for great distances and also require you to stand. This journey requires stamina. Prepare yourself by establishing a walking routine at least 2 to 3 months before Hajj.
It is vital before undertaking such a great journey that one prepares for it to ensure that you are able to have a valid Hajj carried out with awareness and the significance of the rituals involved. There are a number of excellent courses available and local Islamic centres also hold classes. Studing the rulings will also help increase ones Taqwa.
Devotion Your pilgrimage should be only for the sake of Allah. It is vital that you undertake this journey with the correct intentions.
Funding Your Hajj in a Lawful Manner This includes not using money from interest, alcohol, gambling and other means which may not be deemed lawful. Take everything what you will require (do not depend on others or ask them to fulfill your needs).
Return all Amanahs If someone lent you something in the past, an amanah (i.e. personal belongings) then this should be returned. Also clear all debts. Hajj is only obligatory if a person has the funds to pay for this journey.
Make sure you have enough money to suffice yourself during the journey and secure the needs of your family members whom you may leave behind. Nowadays, people try their best to take along all things of comfort for Hajj. They take all kinds of precautions but the best precaution is piety, fear of Allah and righteousness. Allah says: “Take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O men of understanding! [Surah al-Baqarah 2: 197] Hajj Brochure 2013 | Islam Channel

Talbiyah The Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alahi wa sallam) said:
“When any Muslim utters talbiyah, everything - every stone or every tree or every pebble - on his right side and on his left side responds with a (similar) talbiyah, until the whole earth resounds with it.” (Reported by Ibn Majah, Al-Baihaqi, Tirmizhi, Al-Hakim, who considers it a sound hadith)
“Here I am O Allaah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”

Day 1 8th Dhul Hijjah The first official day of Hajj is 8th Dhul Hajjah in which pilgrims travel from Makkah to Mina. Prior to this, pilgrims put on Ihram and complete Umrah (if performing Hajj Tamattu’). They spend the day and night in large tents.
Makkah Al Mukarramah
STAGES OF HAJJ Day 4 & 5 10th-13th Dhul Hijjah
Mina
Mina
Pilgrims return to Mina after Dhur and spend the 11th, 12th and 13th day of Dhul Hijjah there in which they stone the three Jamarat starting with the smallest using 7 pebbles for each. The act of stoning commemorates the three attempts the devil made to tempt the Prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salaam). The Prophet rejected all three of the devil’s attempts, stoning him and driving him away. Pilgrims may leave after the 12th if they wish.
After the 12th Dhul Hujjah Pilgrims return to Makkah and make a farewell Tawaf. Sa’ee does not form part of the Farewell Tawaf. All pilgrims are required to leave the country by 10th Muharaam which is around a month after Hajj. 20

Day 2 9th Dhul Hijjah
Arafah (Mount of Mercy)
Pilgrims leave in the morning and travel to the plain of Arafat. This is known as the ‘Day of Arafat’ where pilgrims stand or sit near the Mount of Mercy asking Allah for forgiveness, devote time to prayers and repent for their sins. The Prophet (saw) said:
”The best du’aa is the du’aa in the day of ‘Arafah and the best thing I and the Prophets before me have ever said is: Laa Ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa Shareeka lah!” [Malek and at-Tirmidhi]
Makkah Al Mukarramah
On this day Muslims from around the world also join them in spirit by fasting. After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah which is between Arafat and Mina. It is here where they collect small stone pebbles to be used the following day.
Jamaraat
Day 3
Muzdalifah
10th Dhul Hijjah On the third day pilgrims move back to Mina to Jamrat al- Aqabah and throw stone pebbles at pillars and remember the story of Shaytan when he tried to persuade Ibrahim (alayhis salam) not to sacrifice his son. The stones represent Ibrahim’s rejection of Shaytan and his steadfastness. It is here that men shave their hair and women trim their hair. Meat is slaughtered and given away to the poor. This is symbolic of Ibrahim who was ready to sacrifice his son upon Allah’s command. This day also marks Eid ul Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice). Pilgrims return to Makkah and perform Tawaf around the Kabah which is known as Tawaf al Ifadhah. They also perform Sa’ee which is walking 7 times on the Safa and Marwa hills. After Tawaf Al-Ifadhah the state of Ihram is completely ended and all restrictions are lifted. Hajj Brochure 2013 | Islam Channel

Maqam Ibrahim
Directly above the Kabah is an exact replica in Jannah. This Ka’bah was mentioned in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa salam) during his journey to Isra wal Miraaj when he said: “Then I was shown Al-Bait-al-Ma’mur (i.e. Allah’s House). I asked Jibraeel about it and he said, This is Al Bait-ul-Ma’mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and when they leave they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).”
DID YOU
KNOW The very first construction of the Kabah was done by Prophet Adam (peace be upon him)
The other names for the Ka’ba are Bait ul Haram and Bait ul Ateeq The Ka’ba has been a variety of colours including green and white
The doors of the Kabah are open twice a year for dignitaries and guests. It used to be open twice a week and people would be able to enter and pray inside
The Kabah used to have two doors one for entering and the other for exiting and a window The current Kabah only has a single door, and no windows.

uring the time of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salaam) various rites related to the Hajj were in the hands of different groups of the Quraish. Every one of these groups eventually lost control of their guardianship of a particular rite except one. This was related to the keys of the Kabah.
down to the Prophet with the following verse: “Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they belong to .....” An Nisa 4:58 The Prophet ordered the keys to be returned back to Uthman after opening the Kabah’s doors saying “Take it, O Bani Talha, eternally up to the Day of Resurrection, and it will not be taken from you unless by an unjust, oppressive tyrant.”
On the 8th year of Hijra a day known as the the Victory of Makkah, the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) wanted to pray inside our most sacred house, the Kabah. But upon Upon witnessing the character of the Prophet finding the doors locked he ordered Ali ibn Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa salam) Talib to obtain its keys. Uthman ibn Tala from Uthman immediately said: “I bear witness that the Bani Shaiba family had the keys in his indeed Allah is one and Muhammad (peace possession, be upon him) not a Muslim is none other “Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts at the time he than messendid not be- to whom they belong to.....” [An Nisa 4:58] ger of Allah. lieve that the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) was a MesTo this day, the key keepers remain in the senger of Allah, his reason behind locking Bani Shaiba family- a miracle of a revelation the doors he didn’t want the Prophet (sallahu that was made 1434 years ago. alayhi wa salam) to enter. Ali ibn abu Talib returned back with the keys and the Prophet The key is used twice a year in the month (sallahu alayhi wa salam) was able to enter of Muharram and the second is on the first and remove all of the idols from inside the day of the month of Sha’ban for washing the house and at this point Angel Jibreel came house. Virtues of Hajj Compiled by Shaikh Abdul Majid Ali (IslamiQA Presenter) There are many Ahaadiths which speak of the virtues of Hajj. Below are just a few of them:
HADITH 1 Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked which deed is best. He said, “Belief in Allah and His Messenger.” He was asked, then what? He said, “Jihad for the sake of Allah.” He was asked, then what? He said, “An accepted Hajj.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 26; Muslim, 83). An accepted Hajj means: 1. It must be paid for with halal money. 2. One should keep away from evil, sin and unjust disputes during Hajj. 3. One should observe all the rituals according to the Sunnah. 4. One should not show off by doing Hajj; it should be purely and sincerely for the sake of Allah. 5. One should not follow it with acts of disobedience and sin.

HADITH 2 Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever does Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), commit sin, or dispute unjustly during the Hajj, will come back like the day his mother gave birth to him. (Narrated by al-Bukhari: 1449; Muslim: 1350)
HADITH 3 Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “‘Umrah is expiation for the time between it and the previous ‘Umrah, and an accepted hajj has no less a reward than Paradise.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1683; Muslim, 1349)
HADITH 4 ‘Aishah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said, O Messenger of Allah, can we not go out on campaigns and fight in jihad with you? He said, “But the best and most beautiful of jihad is Hajj, an accepted pilgrimage.” ‘Aishah said, I never stopped going for Hajj after I heard that from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1762)
HADITH 5
HADITH 6
‘Amr ibn al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Hajj wipes out whatever (sins) came before it.”
‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Keep on doing Hajj and ‘Umrah, for they eliminate poverty and sin just as the bellows eliminate impurities from iron and gold and silver.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 121)
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 810; al-Nasa’i, 2631)

A woman should only trim her hair and not shave at the end of her pilgrimage
Fiqh of Hajj for Women
It is permissible for a woman to wear any coloured clothing whilst in Ihram and does not need to wear white
Women are not required to jog (in Arabic known as ramal) in the first three circumambulations (Tawaf) around the Ka'bah. It is sunnah for the men to do so
A woman should not cover her face or wear gloves during Hajj. However it is permissible for her to cover her face if she fears the gaze of non-mahram men
Imam An-Nawawi said, "Our ‘Ulama' have said that it is not desirable for a woman to kiss the black stone, nor to touch it, except at those times when the Tawaf area is light or empty, like during the night or at other times. This is because in her crowding the men it would bring hardship upon her and hardship upon the men."

My Personal Hajj Experience By Abdul-Latif Shamsudoha
H
aving been weaned as a young adult on ‘The Road to Mecca’ (Asad, Muhammad) and ‘The Difficult Journey’ (Thomson, Ahmad), the Hajj had always been a great aspiration of mine. In 2007, Allah Most High invited me to His Sacred House. Excuse the cliché, but it was a journey which transformed my heart and my life. The Kaa’ba has been divinely honoured and our tradition tells us of many Messengers and Prophets who fulfilled the rites of pilgrimage to Mecca. To be able to follow in their footsteps was a great honour indeed. The Hajj is composed of several physical activities, but it’s the spiritual ones which
make the pilgrimage special. Each pilgrim is promised coveted opportunities for their supplications to be granted by the Almighty. It is an indescribable feeling to be part of an ocean of worshippers calling upon Allah Most High, in a variety of tongues. One of the many things that I took from my pilgrimage, is that worship in all its forms, is so much more sweeter when done out of love for that act and of course, for the Almighty. That journey helped me to fall in love with Allah Most High and His Beloved (May peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and I am forever grateful for that blessed invitation.

CHARITY TESTIMONIALS
Islamic Help In 2013, Islamic Help is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In the 10 years of our existence, our Qurbani programme has reached millions of people in some of the world’s most impoverished regions. Our philosophy is Reaching People in Need. Our Qurbani programme, part of our iHelp Feed the World campaign, allows donors to select those they would like to see benefit from their Qurbani on the occasion of Eid Ul Adha. We organise the distribution of fresh meat to vulnerable communities affected by natural or man-made disasters. Many of the recipients struggle throughout the year to get even the most basic of necessities and this is one of the few – and in some cases the only – occasion on which they get to enjoy meat. Last year our Qurbani teams distributed meat to more than 210,000 people in the world’s poorest regions. This year, we will be carrying out Qurbani on behalf of our donors in 10 countries, including Syria and for Syrian refugees in Jordan. Help us to help them. Join us in Reaching People in Need.

Orphans In Need Qurbani: fulfil an obligation and feed destitute orphans That time of year has come again where we are blessed with the opportunity to carry out our religious obligation of Qurbani (Udhiyya). With your support, last year we were able to carry out your Qurbani in several countries throughout the world, ensuring that the meat is distributed to the most needy widows and orphans. This year, we hope you will continue to support us to provide them with much needed food and assistance ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. We have thousands of widows and orphans in desperate need of our help. At this special time, we hope to be of those who receive the blessings of their sincere duaas. By performing your Qurbani with Orphans in Need, you will ensure that a smile is brought to their faces. Help us to help them, and earn the rewards and pleasure of our Lord.

Muslim Aid Thanks to the great response from our supporters, we were able to raise over £550,000 in donations and managed to perform over 8,500 Qurbani’s worldwide in 2012. Once again with their support and generosity, Muslim Aid field offices and partner organisations continued to carry out yet another successful campaign and distributed fresh Qurbani meat on Eid, enabling the poor and hungry in over 40 countries to join in the festivities. Through our Reach More Feed More Qurbani campaign, we were able to reach countries as remote as Mongolia and Madagascar to countries affected by conflict in Syria and Palestine. This year, in the context of worsening humanitarian situation in Syria, Mali, Myanmar and many other conflict and disaster affected countries, the need is much bigger than last year. Muslim Aid is committed to reach and provide Qurbani meat to more refugees and needy people than last year. We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters and well-wishers.

Moazzam Begg Former Guantanamo Prisoner & Director of Outreach for Cageprisoners “Eid is a time of celebration for Muslims. But often we forgot what we’re commemorating: a father prepared to sacrifice the thing most beloved to him for the sake of his Creator. There are many Muslims today who continue to make sacrifices on such a scale, some we know of and others only Allah knows. This Eid, whether we’re spending it at home or in the confines of the Sacred Mosques, please remember those whose sacrifices have been so immense that few of us could imagine bearing them.”
Murad Qureshi AM London wide Assembly Member at the London Assembly, GLA “I would like to wish the Muslim community Eid Mubarak. We live in one of the most diverse cities in the world and this is an opportunity to reflect on the benefits this diversity brings to all our lives. Manzila Uddin Hon Baroness Uddin - House of Lords “In 2010 my husband and I were blessed to be part of a delegation and Alhamdullillah offered our Hajj, with every prayers I plead that Inshallah the promise of acceptance is answered, Oh Allah, I am at Your door, I trust in You and I beseech Your Promise of Acceptance. The experience of witnessing collective prayers and expression of love of Allah SWT was unimaginably peaceful, yet I had never seen before an assembly of so many hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in prayers. It has been almost three years yet I can recall all of the moments in Kabbah, Mina, Arafat and Mujdalifah as though it is now. In solitude of prayers I hold on to that sense of belonging to our Islam and the pride of being a Muslim, I felt honoured and privileged to have been able to touch and feel the same earth as that of our beloved Prophet SWA. May Allah’s blessings be the Noor that enlighten our heart, May the Almighty Allah SWT Accept all our prayers and offerings this Eid. I ask my brothers and sister to remember my family in your duas, Eid Mubarak!”
