CEO MESSAGE Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters Assalaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu Alhamdulillah, the blessed month of Ramadhan is upon us once again. I send my warmest greetings to Muslims in the UK and around the world during this sacred time, and pray that Allah (SWT) gives us the opportunity to make the most of this month. Allah (SWT) tells us in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may attain taqwa.” (Qur’an 2:183) Allah (SWT) gives us many ways through which we can get closer to Him and attain taqwa or God consciousness. Besides fasting in a correct manner, other acts of worship such as supererogatory salaah, recitation of the Qur’an, du’aa and giving charity particularly during Ramadhan can all serve to bring us closer to our creator.

Allah (SWT) has blessed us tremendously with the chance to experience His mercy and blessings through yet another Ramadhan. Let us strive to make the most of this opportunity and do as much good as we can. Let us make this a month of seeking Allah’s forgiveness, redemption from the hellfire and gaining entry into paradise. Let us also take some time to pray for those enduring pain, suffering and oppression around the world, remembering that our struggle ends with iftar whereas theirs continues indefinitely. Help us to alleviate suffering worldwide by tuning in to Islam Channel’s daily live appeals as we raise money for charity every evening. Alhamdulillah through the generous support of our viewers, we received over £8 million in donations last year and hope to raise even more this year with your help Insha-Allah. Ramadhan is a time to improve our character, cleanse our lifestyle and refine our habits – but why stop with Ramadhan? When asked which deeds are most pleasing to Allah, the Prophet (SAW) said that they are “the most regular constant deeds even though they may be few” (Bukhari). Let us all make a sincere effort to continue the good habits we pick up this Ramadhan Insha-Allah. Let us strive to make this our best Ramadhan yet. I pray that it is a month of self-improvement, increased taqwa and piety, forgiveness and blessings for all and I pray that Allah (SWT) improves the situation of our brothers and sisters suffering worldwide. Aameen. Praise be to Allah (SWT), Lord of the worlds. Ramadhan Kareem to all.

The month of Ramadhan provides the opportunity for increased rewards of our good deeds. The Prophet said, “Whoever fasted the month of Ramadhan out of sincere faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Bukhari)

2

Read the Qur’an. “Whoever reads a letter of the book of Allah will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward. I do not say that alif-laam-meem is a letter, rather alif is a letter, laam is a letter and meem is a letter.” (Tirmidhi)

3

Perform extra salaah. The Prophet said: "Whoever offers optional prayers throughout the nights of Ramadhan, believing in Allah and seeking His rewards, will have his previous sins forgiven." (Bukhari & Muslim)

ETIQUETTES OF MAKING DU’AA The Prophet

said:

“There is nothing more deserving of regard by Allah Ta’ala than du’aa.” (Tirmidhi) Ramadhan is a chance for us to improve our relationship with our creator and one of the best ways to do this is through supplication and du’aa. These are a few etiquettes to employ when making du’aa to increase its likelihood of acceptance Insha-Allah.

12

Ramadhan Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

01

06

Begin and end your du’aa by praising Allah (SWT) and invoking peace and blessings on the Prophet Muhammad .

Use a voice that is in between a whisper and out loud.

Their call therein will be, “Exalted are You, O Allah ,” and their greeting therein will be, “Peace.” And the last of their call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!” (Qur’an 10:10)

02 Perform du’aa while in a state of wudhu

Say, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names.” And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an (intermediate) way (Qur’an 17:110)

07 Being determined in one’s request and certain for a response:

03 Face the Qiblah

04 Raise both hands while making du’aa. The Prophet said, ‘Indeed Allah SWT is Shy and Beneficent. He is Shy when His servant raises his hands to Him (in du’aa) to return them empty.’ (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).

05 Acknowledge your sins and ask Allah for forgiveness. Make du’aa for yourself first, then others.

‘When you supplicate to Allah you should be sure of being answered. And know that Allah does not answer a supplication that comes from a careless and inattentive heart.’ (Tirmidhi).

08 Insistence in du’aa and repetition (3 times): “Abdallah bin Mas’ud reported that the Prophet loved to repeat his supplication three times, and pray for forgiveness three times.” (Abu Dawud)

09 End the du’aa by saying “aameen”

Sunnah acts of the Prophet during Ramadhan The Prophet was our guiding light and perfect example. What were some of the things he did during Ramadhan that we can emulate?

01

Suhoor Anas ibn Maalik (RA) reported the Prophet as saying, “Partake of the predawn meal, for there is a blessing in it”. (Bukhari)

02

03

Hastening to break the fast

Revive the Sunnah

“Those of my servants who are quickest in breaking their fast are dearest to me.” (Tirmidhi)

“Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.” (Tirmidhi)

06

Supplication at the time of iftar

Performing extra worship in the last 10 days

The Prophet used to offer the following supplication upon breaking his fast: “The thirst has been quenched, the veins are now moist and reward has been gained if Allah wills.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)

“When the (last) ten started, the Prophet would tighten his waist belt (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer), and wake up his family.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

04

Breaking fast with fresh or dried dates, or water Anas bin Malik narrates that Allah’s Messenger used to break his fast with fresh dates before going to prayer. When fresh dates were unavailable, he would break his fast with dried dates. When dried dates were unavailable, he would take a few sips of water. Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off), then all his past sins will be forgiven." (Sahih Bukhari) Allah's Apostle used to practice I’tikaaf in the last ten nights of Ramadhan and used to say, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadhan." Things to do on the ‘Night of Power’: 1

Recite the holy Qur’an abundantly

2

Strive to gain Allah’s forgiveness. Recommended du’aa:

‘Allahumma

innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa’fu anni’

Translation: O Allah you are the One who pardons greatly, and loves to pardon, so pardon me. 3

Perform voluntary prayers e.g. Tahajjud

4

Perform dhikr of Allah. Recite any form of supplications such as Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La illaha ilallah, Allahu Akbar, Laa hawla walaa quwwata illaa billaah etc.

5

Make du’aa.

“And when My servants ask you, (O Muhammad), concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” [Qur’an 2:186] We should devote much of the night of Qadr in du’aa asking Allah for His mercy and forgiveness for all of our past sins and making firm intentions to Allah that we will change for the better and strive to become closer to Him.

Ramadhan facts OBLIGATORY During the advent of Islam, fasting became obligatory in 3 stages: 1. 2.

3.

Muslims were first commanded to fast for the day of Ashura Muslims were then instructed to fast for the month of Ramadhan OR to feed a poor person for every day they did not fast Finally, fasting for the month was made compulsory on all those who were able to

WHEN? Fasting was made obligatory in the year 624, the second year after Hijra, and the month of Ramadhan begins with the sighting of the new moon. Ramadhan is the ninth month from the 12 months of the Islamic lunar calendar.

WHY? During Ramadhan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, impurities (such as gossip and cursing) and other pleasures from dawn to dusk. Removing these comforts from daily routine is intended to focus the mind on prayer, spirituality, charity and to purify the body and mind.

HOW MANY? The Prophet is believed to have fasted a total of nine months of Ramadhan in his life. 34

Ramadhan Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

REVELATION The first revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet took place during the last ten days of Ramadhan. The angel Jibraeel reviewed the Qur’an with the Prophet once every Ramadhan, and twice during the last year of his life.

TARAWEEH It is Sunnah to pray Taraweeh in congregation. The Prophet prayed Taraweeh in congregation but is also known to have prayed by himself sometimes.

I’TIKAAF The Prophet observed I’tikaaf in the last ten days of Ramadhan. I’tikaaf means to retreat in a masjid.

LAYLAT-UL QADR Laylat-ul Qadr is considered the holiest night of the year. It is also known as the "Night of Power," and commemorates the night that the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad .

ZAKAAH Zakaah’s literal meaning is purification. Zakaah is the purification of a person’s wealth and soul.

EID The festival of Eid and giving of Zakaah marks the end of Ramadhan.

Fasting and Dietary Changes During Ramadhan Fasting is an age-old practice that transcends a number of faiths and customs. It is observed by Muslims during Ramadhan and parts of other months, by Jews on days including Yom Kippur, by Christians during Lent and on the fast of the Apostles, and by Hindus on a regular basis. This article will focus on the Muslim fast of Ramadhan. Is fasting obligatory for all Muslims? Fasting is an obligatory part of faith for all Muslims who are fit and well. There are however clear rulings in Islam to exempt a person from fasting where it may have a negative effect on their physical or mental health. Elderly people, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers may also have good reasons not to fast. People with complex or long term medical problems should seek medical advice and consult their Imam or local Islamic scholar to help determine whether they should or should not fast. Additionally, people who have jobs that require them to be in peak physical health, such as surgeons performing complex surgery or airline pilots, are allowed to delay fasting until a time outside of Ramadhan where they can make up these fasts. Despite these rules, many Muslims with complex medical problems and particularly those who do not feel physically unwell, will often choose to fast, even if medical and scholarly advice is that they do not have to do so. This may be due to feelings of obligation or social pressure or guilt, or simply due to spiritual need. One recent medical study showed that up to 79% of patients with diabetes chose to fast during Ramadhan even though there may have been valid reasons for them not to do so. If you are faced with making a decision on whether to fast or not during Ramadhan, you should firstly explore your motivation for fasting with an Imam or religious leader so that you can make an informed decision where you carefully 42

Ramadhan Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

consider the benefits and risks. When you make a decision to fast, make sure that you have clear advice on what to do if you feel unwell. You may also have to change your medication regimen to fit around fasting. This should only be done in discussion with your GP and you should never stop taking your usual medicines unless it is on GP or specialist advice.

Meal patterns and dietary advice during Ramadhan There is a very different meal routine during Ramadhan. Most people eat two meals a day the suhoor (pre-dawn meal) that begins the fast and the iftar (meal at sunset) that ends the fast. Due to the long length of the fast, many people will eat very large meals at suhoor and again at iftar and these will often be eaten very quickly. Muslims in the UK also tend to eat foods that are high in fat and sugar and especially so during Ramadhan, which are not good for your health. It is very important to eat a healthy, balanced diet during Ramadhan at all times that includes plenty of whole fruit and vegetables. Excessive food consumption can be a problem during Ramadhan and you should try to not overeat at night. Foods high in complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, lentils, beans and rice will help to reduce feelings of hunger during the day. Furthermore, try to avoid sugary drinks and instead have sugar-free drinks during non-fasting hours.

Common complaints during Ramadhan Indigestion Due to the intake of large meals early in the morning and late in the evening, indigestion is a common problem among people who fast, and particularly so after suhoor when people return to sleep. To reduce the chances of getting ingestion, you should eat small meals frequently during non-fasting hours. Once again, meals should be healthy, and fatty or spicy foods should be avoided. Weight loss and sleeping on raised pillows will also help. If indigestion is severe, contact your pharmacist or GP for advice. Headaches Many people who fast report headaches, and particularly so during the first week of Ramadhan. This is due to the body adapting to the pattern of fasting, and reasons include disturbed sleeping and working patterns, stress and dehydration. Where possible, you should try to lighten your daily routine to avoid stressful activities. Where stress is unavoidable, for example for those employed in physically demanding jobs such as airline pilots, fasting can be postponed to alternative dates when they are not working. The importance of ensuring good hydration during non-fasting periods is crucial. Constipation Constipation is a commonly reported problem amongst people who fast. A high fibre diet, for example, eating a bran cereal, and good hydration with water will help to reduce the chances of suffering from constipation. If symptoms are severe, laxatives may be helpful.

Ramadhan as an opportunity to improve your health Ramadhan is the month of spiritual renewal where Muslims will pause to reflect on their lives in all

of spiritual, mental and physical dimensions. We know that most people come together to create a vibrant community spirit that is not observed throughout the rest of the year. As such, Ramadhan is an ideal time to use this spiritual high to improve your health and make positive changes in your life. This may be done by improving your diet, losing weight or better managing your health problems. For example, Ramadhan provides an ideal opportunity to pay closer attention to controlling diabetes or to quit smoking. Many GPs and health centres will run events to help you achieve this. Also, working with friends to achieve these goals will give you extra motivation to succeed.

With this in mind, we wish you an enjoyable, healthy and spiritually uplifting Ramadhan Insha-Allah.

About Ramadhan

01

I have asthma and I have to take inhalers twice a day. Can I still fast? It is allowed for a fasting person to use an inhaler if needed. Inhalers are not in the form of food and drink. They resemble non-nutritive injections.

02

I broke my fast two minutes prior to sunset by mistake. Is this fast still valid? A fasting person does not invalidate his fast if he does something to break his fast either in ignorance or out of forgetfulness. The Prophet said: “Whoever forgets he is fasting and eats or drinks something should complete his fast, for it is merely that Allah has given him food and drink. (Bukhari and Muslim)

03

Do the six fasts of Shawwaal need to be observed consecutively? The fasting for the six days of Shawwaal can occur any time during the month of Shawwaal. They may be observed consecutively or separately.

46

Ramadhan Brochure 2014 | Islam Channel

04

I know that it is permissible to use the miswak while fasting. However, can a person brush his teeth with toothpaste, or would this break his fast? There is nothing wrong with a fasting person using toothpaste, as long as it does not go down his gullet. However, it would be better to refrain from using it, simply because it has a strong tendency to go down a person’s throat while he is unaware.

05

If a person misses some Ramadhan fasts for a legitimate reason, does he or she have to make them up before the next fast or is there no time limit? If one capable of performing the fasts missed during the year neglects it until the next Ramadhan, he or she should fast during the current Ramadhan and then perform the missed fasts of the past year. In addition to this, he should also give an atonement of feeding a needy person for each day in the opinion of all the schools except the Hanafi madhab which requires the person to perform only the missed fasts without any atonement.

06

If a person is unsure how many fasts he has broken or missed, how does he calculate how many that he has to make up? A person who is unsure of the number of Ramadhan fasts missed is obligated to fast whatever number it takes to be certain that he or she has made up all the missed fasts. He or she can overestimate if need be. However, the person should also take care not exaggerate the estimate or allow unfounded doubts to cause him or her to increase the number of days unreasonably.

07

Do dental procedures such as cleaning, filling and removing teeth or anaesthetic injections invalidate fasting? The things mentioned in the question do not have any effect on the validity of the fast, rather they are forgiven, but one should be careful to avoid swallowing any medicine or blood. Similarly the injection mentioned does not have any effect on the validity of the fast, because it is not like food or drink, and the basic principle is that the fast remains valid.

This Ramadhan, we are pleased to continue the cycle of alleviating poverty by bringing two new campaigns to Islam Channel viewers: “Honouring Our Mothers” which is aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates and “Supporting Our Sisters“ which aims to provide education opportunities to girls and livelihood opportunities to female-headed households.

Calculate your Zakaah What is Zakaah? Zakaah is one of the five pillars of Islam and a compulsory act of worship that requires Muslims who own wealth at or over a certain threshold (called the Nisab*) to donate a portion of their qualifying wealth, typically 2.5%, to eligible recipients. It is a right the poor have over the rich. Zakaah benefits the giver as well as the receiver.

Who pays Zakaah? In order to pay Zakaah, a Muslim must be adult, sane and possess the Nisab; a minimum amount of wealth for an entire year. If your net assets equal or exceed the Nisab then Zakaah is due at 2.5% of your total net assets.

Who receives Zakaah? The Holy Qur’an (Chapter 9, Verse 60) tells us who may benefit from Zakaah: • • • •

The poor The destitute Administrators of Zakaah New Muslims facing hardship

• • •

Muslims who are unable to pay their debt Travellers who do not have enough money to return home People working in the path of Allah (SWT)

What type of wealth does Zakaah include? Assets to include in your Zakaah calculation are cash (on hand and in bank accounts), shares, pensions, gold, silver, business goods, crops and cattle. You do not need to count personal items such as your home, furniture, cars, food, clothing, which are not used for business purposes.

When should I pay Zakaah? Zakaah becomes payable as soon as the Nisab (minimum amount of wealth) has been held for one lunar year.

Can I pay my Zakaah in advance? Zakaah can be spread throughout the year, for example by setting up a monthly direct debit. However, the total amount payable must be paid by the due date.

I have liabilities, should I include them? Certain liabilities can be deducted from your Zakatable assets before calculating how much Zakaah you owe. These include outstanding or overdue living expenses such as a rent payment or utility bill, as well as debts.
