KEEP IT SIMPLE: LOOK GOOD. SAIL EASY.
WE COMBINE DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Our leather loops are just one example for our credo. CompAred to conventional handrails, they have several advantages. They are safer because they run in a rail and offer a much better grip. They are more elegant and blend in as a stylish design element in our first-class interiors. And they are lighter, helping to keep a YYacht as light as possible and able to set sail in light winds. These leather loops are just one of the hundreds of details that make our yachts faster, more beautiful, and mark our experience. Bringing simplicity to the water means hard work for us, but the most fun possible for you.

The Islander #308
Note from the Editor.
April… ah.. Spring is here… Here comes the sun, doobi doobi… and the Mediterranean shipyards are bustling with activity. Well, that’s a poetic way of saying that workers and suppliers are clocking up extra hours, while captains, engineers, project managers and chief stews have increased blood pressure as they see the first guest trips coming closer.
For those who are not inundated with spreadsheets, schedules and accounts, April must be the number one FOMO month. The Caribbean season is still in full swing.
Meanwhile, excitement is growing in the Med for the upcoming yacht shows and races. There is the Antigua Classic Regatta which overlaps with the MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona, which overlaps with the Palma International Boat Show and its Superyacht Village! If you want to attend this event that keeps growing from strength to strength, you’ll miss out on at least a part of MEDYS. The 8th edition of the Napflion-based show is firming up its position as the Eastern Med’s main event. You can’t race at both the Palma Vela and Antigua Race week either.
However, you can always pick up The Islander Magazine as we aim to cover all of these events. It’s always great to read about what you missed out on!
Our main focus will be, of course, on the Palma International Boat Show. And as the media partner for the Palma Superyacht Village, you will be able to find The Islander team members there networking with industry insiders, yacht crew and owners. Speaking of which; Industry Insider, Crew Life and Owners World are the three sections we have decided to focus our content on. Owners and crew can stay abreast of the new developments shared by the yachting industry insiders. Industry professionals and owners can gain insight into the world of yacht crew life. In Owners World, you can find attractive profiles of charter and brokerage yachts, and other luxury lifestyle info.
Good luck to all of those finishing up their refit and maintenance projects against the clock. Good luck to all of those racing in the upcoming regattas. Good luck to those attending the upcoming yacht shows.
Don’t forget how blessed we are to be working in a fun, luxurious and economically strong sector that keeps trucking on, even in times of turmoil. In fact, it keeps growing and many of us often wish there were 48 hours in a day. Remember to take a break once in a while, stay hydrated, breathe, put the phone down and read The Islander!

Let's do something different!' That's what we thought when the irresistible idea arose to use Niklas Amundson's illustration on our April cover. A classic yacht anchored in front of Palma's cathedral -also the backdrop of the Palma International Boat Show this month- represents the Yachting Industry as we know it. A lady in luxurious dress and hat breathes the Luxury Yachting Lifestyle that we are infusing into our publication with the new Owners World section.
Niklas Amundson, the artist behind the cover, was born in 1967 on the Swedish east coast, close to Stockholm. At an early age, he moved with his family to a serene and beautiful island named Marstrand on the west coast of Sweden. There, he followed in his father’s footsteps and began painting almost as soon as he could keep a brush in his hand. Through the years, Niklas’ association with the sea has continued and has taken him from the deck of the 138ft sailing yacht S/S Gloria to a Marstrand pilot boat, and later to the Swedish Coast Guard.
In recent years, Niklas has been spending more time in Mallorca where he has found new inspiration.

“What began as a show for local brokers is now attracting brokerage houses from the US, UK, South of France and Italy who want to show their boats and meet with clients in Palma. It has become an important show on an international level.”
The Islander #308
-Arne Ploch, Managing Director of the Palma Superyacht Village
“ The setting for PIBS is spectacular,” says Arne Ploch Managing Director of the Palma Superyacht Village. “In the heart of Palma, surrounded by amenities, luxury hotels and worldclass restaurants in the springtime sun, clients are flying in from all over Europe and further afield. It is a really enjoyable time and a great way to start the summer.”
And clients are not only flying in to enjoy the boat show atmosphere, but they are also coming ready to buy. Arne explains, “Having PIBS in the springtime is a great opportunity for buyers. They can potentially sign a contract right after the show in May and a month later, be out on the water fully enjoying the Mediterranean season aboard their new vessel. That's a unique and very alluring prospect.”
Arne continues, “What began as a show for local brokers is now attracting brokerage houses from the US, UK, South of France and Italy who want to show their boats and meet with clients in Palma. It has become an important show on an international level.”
Of course, Palma also has the distinction of being the sailing yacht capital of the world. An unrivalled pedigree of not only sailing yachts but also motor yachts from 24-55m+ will be found at the Superyacht Village in-water display - for sale and also for charter.
In fact, there are more yachts to charter at the Superyacht Village than ever before as the brokerages respond to the evergrowing client desire to spend their vacation time in Balearic waters.
The yachts are not the only attraction at The Superyacht Village. Food-loving visitors can enjoy the return of the popular ‘Tast Out’ catering, which brings its delicious take on local and international cooking to the 2023 show. It will be offering first-class catering services to exhibitors and boats, as well as a happy hour with fixed price open bar. Another foodie favourite -Fosh Lounge- will be back too, bringing the
restaurant's iconic gastronomy, excellent wines and creative cocktails to the show with its new brand partner, Bentley Barcelona.
Not only a show for clients, but the professional yachting industry also converges en-mass in Palma to meet, network, collaborate and exchange ideas.
Along with the ever-popular re-fit and repair area -this year sponsored by Estrella Galicia-, new for 2023 is the Innovation Corner in collaboration with the entrepreneurial community Yachting Ventures. The Innovation Corner will provide a space for yachting startups to showcase new technologies and promote dialogue between companies and the wider yachting industry.
Arne Ploch commented on the partnership “We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, will be featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show. As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative."
"We are eager to meet the selected startups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year.”
Also commenting on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures said, “We're delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There's always a real buzz at this show and I grew up in Mallorca, so the event is personally one of my favourites in the yachting calendar.”
So whether you are coming to Palma to do a little yacht shopping, to meet with industry colleagues and friends, discover new technologies and innovations, or to sit back, a glass of rosé in hand and soak up the atmosphere of all things nautical, the place to be is the Palma International Boat Show and The Superyacht Village.
The Islander team will be in attendance throughout the show and we look forward to seeing you on the dock!

Innovation Corner to launch at Palma Superyacht Village
Recognising the importance of supporting startups in the yachting sector, PIBS will premier an Innovation Corner for the duration of the 4-day event. This new initiative should promote a dialogue between startups and wider industry professionals, sparking conversation around the future of yachting and what we can expect from technology in the years ahead. Palma Superyacht Village has generously allocated a large space for the Innovation Corner, which will be equipped with an outdoor terrace and should attract significant media attention.
Yachting Ventures will support the efforts by helping to shortlist startups chosen to participate, and organise logistics on the ground. Arne Ploch, Palma Superyacht Village Managing Director, commented on the partnership, “We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, will be featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show. As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative. We are eager to meet the selected startups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year.” Yachting Ventures is a global startup hub for the leisure marine and yachting industries, providing the network, education, and opportunities that founders need to scale and raise investment. Commenting on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures said, “We’re delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There’s always a real buzz at this show, and I grew up in Mallorca so the event is personally one of my favourites in the yachting calendar. Bacan Cafeteria
Just off of Avenida Jaime III, this cafe opened during the pandemic and quickly became a “go-to” place for coffee lovers. They make a perfect cortado and have some great brunch options - the acai bowl, hummus bowl or Turkish eggs are all excellent!
The ‘King of the House’ is their flat whitea double shot of espresso combined with creamy whole fresh milk or oat milk. Their main roaster is FRIEDHATS (Amsterdam) whose 65% Brazilian and 35% Ethiopian blend works like a charm.
Last season they launched their own 'nitro cold brew' and it was an instant hit. They infuse their 24-hour cold brew with nitrogen to create a super creamy icecold drink. Perfect for the 300+ sunny days available to enjoy on this wonderful island!
Carrer del Baró de Santa Maria del Sepulcre, 12, Bajos 2, 07012 Palma
The Barn Berlin
Nanø Coffee Lab
What this tiny café lacks in size, it certainly makes up for with its continuously excellent coffee, impossible-to-resist ‘small bites’, and vegan snacks. It is hidden in a tiny alley off Avenida Jaime lll, but you will easily spot it by the crowd spilling out onto the street, coffees in hand. Their signature drink is the Cold Brew, brewed in their cold drip tower, which is, apparently, the only one on the island. The beverage is a very clean and juicy glass of cold coffee, perfect for those sunny days. Carrer de Can Asprer, 2, 07012 Palma
Surry Hills Coffee
This is mostly a takeaway place and is nestled in a cool little street just behind La Rambla. The Shakerato -a double espresso mixed with grapefruit juice, shaken and served over ice- is superb. If you fancy something sweet, they often have freshly baked cakes by the lovely Julia. The peanut butter and jam cookie is also delicious! Not only can you enjoy single-origin coffees here, but you can also purchase the roasted beans. The Kenyan blend offers wonderful acidity and rich berry flavours, whilst the Ethiopian Blend features floral notes coupled with refreshing peachy flavours. Costa d'en Brossa, 5, 07001 Palma
Mistral Coffee House and Roastery
Nestled in a small square opposite the Teatro Principal, this coffee house is a great meeting place. Not only can you enjoy a ‘Brazil’ -their all-star classic espresso- but they also sell the beans to take home. They are just about to launch a new coffee label ‘Tramuntana’, which is very smooth with notes of dark chocolate, caramel and praline. Pick up a bag and try it for yourself!
Plaça de
Weyler, 2A, 07001 Palma
This place has some incredibly tasty open sandwiches, while their cortado is as close to perfection as it gets. The cinnamon roll is also a must try! Their signature beverage is the ‘magic coffee’. Invented in Melbourne, Australia -where these guys learnt their trade before coming to Palmait consists of a double ristretto with slightly foamed milk served in a 5oz cup. Apparently, the secret is the base -two sweet and delicate ristrettosthat make this coffee richer, stronger and more complex. It is perfect for those who enjoy all the flavour of a flat white with much less caffeine.
C. del Carme, 12, 07003 Palma
Cachao
If you fancy a good, raw, organic (even vegan) chocolate treat, you will absolutely love Cachao in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood. Master Chocolatier Tino Wolter makes all of his chocolate by hand with the whole process taking four days. The results are incomparable to any commercial chocolate. Try the Apricot and Lavender for an unusual but exquisite match or the Orange Bar, which has gently dried and finely ground oranges delicately blended into expertly tempered chocolate, infusing it with a mellow citrus aroma. They use Sóller oranges - the best one can find on Mallorca! Plaça de la Navegació, 14A, 07013 Palma

APRIL
Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta
19-24 April
Antigua Sailing Week was formed in 1967, the days when all of the yachts were classic. However, over the next 24 years, the classic yachts were slowly outnumbered by the faster, sleeker modern racing yachts. Captains Uli Pruesse (+2004) and Kenny Coombs hosted a meeting with other classic skippers and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta was born. This year the regatta is being organised by a new team headed by Paul Deeth. They are
making it their mission to recapture its original concept which was “like-minded people getting together to share their passion, racing stunning yachts in superb sailing conditions”. Local and international participants will enjoy three days of exhilarating yacht racing – Old Road race on Friday; Butterfly race on Saturday; and the modified Kenny Coombs Memorial Cannon on Sunday.

More than 30,000 ocean lovers and industry professionals attended to network, see the large selection of new vessels and attend industryfocused seminars and events.
The Islander's Lucie Gardiner was there and brings back the latest news from the MENA region in her report.
Sunreef Yachts chooses UAE for global expansion
With a large focus on future technologies in the UAE, it's no wonder that industryleading luxury eco multihull-builder Sunreef Yachts chose DIBS to announce its global expansion into the region. Not only did they inaugurate their new offices in the heart of Dubai at the beginning of the show, strengthening their presence in the Middle East, but they also signed a historic deal to develop a new facility in cooperation with RAK Maritime City in Ras Al Khaimah. Developed on a 65,000m2 land reserve, the new facility will incorporate the latest technologies in luxury yacht building and will meet the highest standards of sustainability and energy efficiency. As part of the cooperation, Sunreef Yachts and RAK Maritime City will work together to carry out the development of the facility, which will be able to offer a 360-degree approach to yacht manufacturing. This will include a modern paint shop, carpentry, upholstery and stainless-steel workshops, all equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and the latest robotics.
Francis Lapp, Founder and President of Sunreef Yachts, said, ''We couldn't have hoped for a better location to pursue our journey in shaping a greener future for yachting. We can now further expand in an environment that merges the perfect strategic location, skilled workforce and proactive mindset. The yachts produced in Ras Al Khaimah will elevate eco-responsible yachting to a new level and showcase industry-first technology. I would like to thank the RAK Government and RMC management for their invaluable support in making this dream possible and look forward to building a better future for yachting here.''

Sunseeker Gulf
Established Dubai brokerage and consultancy Bush & Noble, has partnered with Sunseeker International and launched a Sunseeker Gulf dealership. This exclusively represents the British motor yacht builder in the UAE, Saudi Arabia. Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait. Sunseeker Gulf debuted the Sunseeker 74 Sport Yacht XPS at the show.
Andrea Frabetti, Chief Executive Officer of Sunseeker International, commented, "Dubai is becoming an increasingly popular destination for yachting. With no shortage of client entertainment, the Dubai Boat Show is a true reflection of this growing trend. The high quality of Sunseeker Gulf's customer service and expert knowledge in the luxury motor yacht sector is unmatched, and we are confident that the Gulf team will offer best-in-class representation in the GCC."
European Custom Yacht Builders at DIBS
The Dubai show has also become an important destination for heritage custom European builders as capital continues to flood into the region. Although without its usual in-water displays, intimate lounges were created and became a hub for client activity, offering stylish and unique spaces for conversation, discovery and the showcasing of its newest concepts. Oceanco debuted its floating sanctuary concept, 'Aeolus'. The elegant and structurally efficient design struck a balance between feminine curves and masculine presence, and at the heart of her design is a reference to the J Class sailing yachts of the last century.
"Aeolus's design sculpture is harmonious and borne of the function and flow envisaged for her future owner. Her curves do not make her overly feminine because there is a masculine quality to her bold, forthright architecture. Apart from the deck surfaces themselves, not one surface is flat or brutally geometric, which
provides a unique aesthetic that sets Aeolus apart," says her exterior designer and former Rolls Royce Phantom designer Giles Taylor. Aeolus's interiors were designed with sustainability in mind by Njord by Bergman Design House in collaboration with Oliveri Home and her naval architecture by LATERAL. Meanwhile, Feadship showcased their concept 'Slice' with a scale model. The concept design has a continuous glass centre panel throughout the superstructure, allowing for the whole vessel to be flooded with natural light. The adjacent Feadshipsponsored Marine Art Gallery displayed incredible sculptures fashioned from polished precious stones and fossils.
The Dutch brand is ''Firmly planting a flag in the UAE'' as Farouk Nefzi, Head of Marketing at Feadship explained ''We have sold 17 Feadships into the region and Dubai is becoming an important regional hub with an international appeal."

Mohamed Hussein Alshaali, Gulf Craft Chairman said, ''At Gulf Craft, we never shy away from out-of-the-box thinking. This innovative spirit inspired our growth from a builder of small fishing boats to one of the world’s leading yacht builders. The Majesty 111 is a nod to our legacy while reflecting a bold, forward-thinking stance. Our visitors can experience the future of yachting built with a clear focus on sustainability.''

Exceptional Dining in Dubai
As well as a very busy Nikki Beach outpost at DIBS and the buzzy VIP bar sponsored by AIX Capital, Dubai proved its dining prowess with some exceptional venues and delectable dishes on our visit to the Emirates. Standout experiences were: New opening La Mar by Gastón Acurio who served up world-class Peruvian dishes in the spectacular setting of Dubai's newest luxury resort, Atlantis The Royal. We ate some of the best ceviches I have ever tasted on the 14th floor of this awesome 43-story resort property, while watching the sunset over the Dubai skyline.
Glamour, incredible cocktails and the OG black cod were on the menu at Nobu Dubai. After 15 years in the city, its brand new location at the former Bridge Suite at Atlantis The Palm is not to be missed. A private elevator takes you to the 22nd floor, where you are greeted by the stunning dining room and terrace with iconic views (you can see the Burj Khalifa on a clear day). Incredible cocktails are imagined by expert mixologist and bar manager (and Mallorquin) Angelo Immorlano. The quality of food and service at this breathtaking, wow-factor venue would rival that of any superyacht!

Russian sanctions
The Russian sanctions imposed as a result of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have had a significant impact on various industries, and yachting has certainly not been spared. Over the past year, we have witnessed various arrests of yachts, asset freezing and forced deletions from registries. The appetite to provide services to Russian individuals has drastically dwindled, primarily because of these legal restrictions and the potential reputational damage associated with doing so. Compliance requirements have intensified, and these are even more prevalent in the yachting industry because Russian nationals make up a significant proportion of the world’s superyacht owners.
‘The Superyacht Agency’ identified around 370 superyachts over 30m in length that are Russian-owned, equating to 8.8% of the superyacht fleet.
Furthermore, Russian nationals own 29% of all superyachts over 90m in length. In light of this compelling data, one cannot dispute the Russian
dynamic in this space and the reason that legislators are keenly looking at yachting to ensure that it’s also playing its part in adhering to these restrictions.
The Richard Masters case was an eye-opener for the yachting industry as it shed a negative light on the modus operandi of service providers regarding their obligations as gatekeepers.
The ripple effects caused by this matter resulted in further apprehension amongst service providers in their dealings with Russian nationals. Whilst it is the service provider’s prerogative to determine who they are prepared to offer services to (as long as these are not in breach of laws), it is wrong to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach - particularly when offboarding existing customers.
Service providers have an obligation to adhere to sanctions and laws, yet they should also take time to understand them and apply them intelligently. Whilst it is good to err on the side of caution in this respect, it is just as wise to make an effort to comprehend who you can and cannot service.

Improving Connectivity at Sea and Digital Decarbonisation
written by IEC
LEO Satellites
Gwenaël Lohéac Chief Procurement Officer and President of Europe & West Africa at IEC Telecom Group
“Low earth orbit constellations are helping yacht owners to harmonise the demand for top-level connectivity with the drive towards green goals,” says satcom specialist IEC Telecom.
High-end yacht guests now expect connectivity without compromise, and as the yachting industry rapidly expands, this demand is predicted to escalate. Some of the largest and most exclusive superyachts can spend upwards of $80k monthly on VSAT connectivity alone.
Starlink technology is on its way to transforming the status quo. The tariff plans for high-speed browsing will be comparable to GSM bills, unlocking new technology for the sector and paving the way to a more sustainable future.
Rising from a record of $5.3billion in 2021, superyacht sales are expected to reach more than $13bn by 2030. Ocean connectivity is helping to drive this growth since the ability to actively engage in real-time business operations from anywhere in the world encourages more wealthy or corporate clients to enjoy sailing.
This fast-moving expansion has resulted in an increased carbon footprint, but digitalisation can play a crucial role in reducing this.
Today’s yacht operations are increasingly conducted via cloud-based platforms, reducing paperwork
levels while increasing operational efficiency. Smart yachts equipped with high-speed connectivity solutions such as IEC Telecom’s XPAND portfolio, powered by Starlink, support a range of remote services. This enables the crew to run maintenance, manage network settings, and comply with regulations without calling into port.
This significantly optimises fuel consumption and reduces the CO2 footprint per yacht.
XPAND comes with Starlink’s 350mbps high-speed and low-latency connection enhanced by onboard remote-accessible network management, reliable back-up, high-spec cyber security, 24/7 support, and a range of customisable value-added services and applications. This enables yacht owners to seamlessly manage their vessel and guest connectivity.
In the on-board domestic setting, iPad-controlled lighting and sound systems are now becoming standard. IEC Telecom takes this trend up a level by offering a more immersive experience for guests with its bespoke onboard information system. This technology allows synchronised reading from multiple devices and offers guests a range of useful information such as route, weather, menus, announcements from the captain, etc., via customised dashboards.
Gwenaël Lohéac, Chief Procurement Officer and President of Europe & West Africa at IEC Telecom Group explains:

Bailing the Keel, Watching the Mustang
written by Oscar Siches photo by Oscar Siches
Oscar says D
own there in the bilge, a parallel world was happening. It was a world of noises – the water against the hull, the snapping of ropes in and out of the cleats, and short, sharp shouts to the bailing crew. All of this an opportunity to forge the first steps in becoming a real crew member. I remember two boats where I ran such duty: a Lightning, an open dinghy 5,95m of USA design, and a Dragon, for me one of the most elegant designs of all times. The big difference with the dragon apart from the 9m LOA, is that she has a keel - no centreboard box in the middle. A higher freeboard made a better resonance box and the water noises sounded like thunder, surrounding the cockpit box where the helmsman and the crew danced their magic with ropes, weight shift and the genoa sheet bronze winches with the under-deck handles.
This story tells the emotional part of starting sailing, a practice that is disappearing. With more efficient building techniques using very light and strong materials, the improvements to the performance of modern craft have reached levels unimaginable 20 years ago. Today, you could find in any EU boat an instruction book to learn to sail, in 14 languages. But you can always tell when someone has been through the basics, no matter what position the person now holds in the industry. Norwegians, for instance, grow up through the nautical business often starting with clinker-built rowing or sailing boats. They also have the history and the culture in their blood. Most of Northern Europe shares nautical history and tradition, but the tendency is fading when we go South towards the Med.
It was, for many of us taking our first steps in sailing, the price to pay if we wanted to earn the right to peek overboard, act as a counterweight, or be assigned the responsibility of tending a jib sheet. Different dinghies would carry tin or plastic containers, and the novice sailor’s duty was to collect the bilge water and throw it outside. The scooping was done by rubbing the bailers opening against the keel, which due to the constant friction kept the area in bare wood, no matter the layers of paint applied.
Norway has a recreational boat for every 7 inhabitantsthe figure for the UK is 55, and for Spain 135!
I had a similar emotional experience a few months ago at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. There was a car and mobility exhibition called Motion, curated by Sir Norman Foster. The cars exhibited were built from very early 1900 to this day. Some of the cars of the ‘50s and the ’60s triggered my admiration. Why? Because I remember seeing some of them on the street, admiring them in magazines and movies (like the Aston Martin DB5 James Bond drove in Goldfinger, an E Type Jaguar, or a more mundane Ford Mustang 68 with Anouk Aimee enjoying a ride on a beach in “A Man and a Woman”). All of these became icons and dreams that would stay forever unachievable, yet fully enjoyable. They are class and tradition, and they define an epoch and a way of living. Life takes us through unique experiences, but we don’t always immediately see them as such. Time must bring up the treasure from within them and present it to us for our full enjoyment, which leaves its impression forever with us.
It is the same with some of the boats during your early yachting times. It is easy to recognise an authentic nautical experience: you hear the person; you recognise the body language, and you witness those smiles across the whole face. You communicate with a language behind the language and feel immediately comfortable with it. Your yachting roots are those of a boy being invited to bail the bilges - that is part of your personality, a whole definition of old-fashion yachting tradition.

Valencia's Monzó leads the way in race-boat paint projects
Monzó Yacht Painting carried out some important paint projects for various high-profile racing yachts in 2022 before being put to the test on the world's most prestigious race courses. These yachts competed in world-class races such as Les Voiles de Saint Tropez and The Ocean Race. Noted vessels such as Cannonball -a regular on racecourses and winner in the Maxi 2 at the 2022 Les Voiles de Saint Tropez- decided to base themselves at Varadero Valencia. Here, Monzó painted her hull and transom extension before she set sail for Saint Tropez.
Flying Nikka, the world's first foiling Mini Maxi, designed by Mills Design and built by King Marine, commissioned Monzó Yacht Painting to carry out all her paint jobs. With a final finish completed in exposed matte carbon before her launch, she made a resounding debut on the world's top race courses.
Meanwhile, S/Y Camiranga was hauled out at Varadero Valencia for Monzó to apply antifouling and polish the hull. This included preparation for her participation in Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. Another visitor, this time before racing in The Ocean Race 2023 in early January, was the VO65 WindWhisper, who had topcoat applied to her hull and non-skid paint to her deck.

During the last month, we went walking around Cuber reservoir in 0C with snow on the slopes of Puig Major. The puddles were iced over, and there was a heavy frost on all the grass and shrubs. Fast forward two weeks, and we’re sitting at anchor in Portals Vells in 24C. That’s the air temperature, by the way, definitely not the water temperature. The first sea swim of the season was very brief indeed!
The satellite industry has also been warming up over the last month. Starlink has been in the limelight creating all the news for the last 6 months, but it’s now time for the other kids on the block to tell us what they are up to.
As expected, the Satellite 2023 Show in Washington DC has been the venue for many new launches, the most relevant and interesting of which has been the first appearance of Amazon on the world satellite stage. Jeff Bezos’s team explained the progress of its LEO constellation Kuiper, and launched its new flat panels. Intellian also launched its new range of flat panel antennas at the show.
Outside the show, Viasat has announced 8th April as the date for the launch of their first huge satellite. The acquisition of Inmarsat by Viasat has been approved as has the Eutelsat acquisition of OneWeb. There is news from OneWeb, and where would we be without further news and changes from Starlink! So, I’ll start where I left off last month with Starlink!!
2023 is warming up fast - in more ways than one!

Starlink RV becomes Starlink Roam
Starlink is shaking things up for mobile RV users again. The latest is that the Starlink for RVs plan has now been wiped entirely from SpaceX's website, and replaced with a new offering called Starlink Roam. Initially, it looks just like a re-branding as certainly not everyone who has the Starlink RV is using it on a motor home.
The Roam plan states explicitly that it is for use on land only, but will this really be the case? In 2022, Starlink stated that they would be geo-fencing the RV to land use only, but this was never enforced, so will it really happen with the Roam?
The Regional Roam coverage is still at variable prices in different locations; $150/m in the USA; €85/m in the EU, and will work only within the same continent as the customer’s shipping address.
There is a Starlink Roam Global option for those who travel further away from their home continent. It is important to note that Starlink Roam is still offered as a best-effort service, and is always de-prioritised behind other Starlink services.
Starlink Roam – will it really be geo-fenced for land use only? It might well happen this year, so all of you using an RV (aka Roam) - be aware. Over the past 6 months, Starlink has never specified this limit on its website, but it does now. Under the FAQs, it now describes Starlink Roam as a geofenced land-based service, implying it will not work at sea. "Regional plans are geo-fenced to work on land within the same continent as the registered Shipping Address, while the Global plans work on land anywhere there is active service coverage…..."
We hear the enforcement is due to start on 1st April! I am sure many of you will hope that’s an April Fool! Please let us know if you experience any change in the service after this date.
There are still plenty of grey areas that Starlink needs to sort out, including regulatory issues in certain countries. Even though they are close to global coverage, some countries have not provided regulatory approval and the service cannot be used legally in those countries. Starlink has now published a list.
Kymeta OneWeb update
Kymeta has completed its first shipment of Hawk u8 antennas to OneWeb for use with its network. It will soon be available for use on land and at sea. OneWeb is putting the finishing touches on its constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites and is planning to offer its commercial broadband service in the summer - we should have pricing soon.

Amazon Kuiper shows off its new flat panels at Satellite 2023
We have been watching Amazon in the background over the past couple of years and we believe that some of the Starlink hype that SpaceX has managed to create has been due to major competition from Amazon just waiting in the wings.
Amazon is investing €10 billion in project Kuiper, its LEO constellation of 3,236 satellites, and has made some significant steps forward, which were announced at Satellite 2023 in March.
The first two prototype satellites will launch in May this year, with the start of the production satellites in the first half of 2024. The satellites are larger than the Starlink ones and are capable of processing 1 terabit per second (1Tbps) of traffic, which will outperform the Starlink satellites by a long way and have a lifetime of 7 years. They expect to have an initial beta service starting with only a few hundred satellites in space towards the end of 2024.
One advantage which Starlink has is that its satellites are launched by the parent company SpaceX, using its own launch rockets. However, Amazon has booked 77 launches, which is far more than they need, from a variety of companies, to deploy all their satellites by mid-2026. Amazon is well-funded enough to consider buying its own rocket launch system to support Kuiper. There were three Kuiper flat panel antennas launched at Satellite 2023.
The Standard design measures under 28cm square and 2.5cm thick, and weighs under 2.25kg. Amazon says the device will deliver speeds to customers of up to 400 megabits per second (Mbps).
It stated that it expects the cost of this Standard antenna to Amazon to be $400!! This is considerably less than Starlink Maritime at €2,500. Will there be a price war?
An Ultra-Compact model, which Amazon says is its smallest and most affordable, is an 18cm square design that weighs about 0.5kg and will offer speeds up to 100 Mbps. This is slightly larger than a Kindle! In addition to residential customers, Amazon plans to offer the antenna to government and enterprise customers for services like “ground mobility and the internet of things.”
Amazon said the Ultra-Compact model is materially less expensive to make than the standard model. Its largest Pro model, at 48cm by 76 cm, represents a high-bandwidth version for more demanding customers. Amazon says this antenna will be able to “deliver speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps)” via space. Interesting years ahead!!
Intellian Flat Panels
Intellian launched its flat-panel antenna at Satellite 2023. This flat panel is designed to operate across fixed land, land mobility, maritime, government and defence sectors. The full-duplex ElectronicallySteered Antenna (ESA) user terminal will operate on the OneWeb satellite network, with production slated to commence later this year.
Why is everyone developing flat panels to work with LEO constellations? If you have been a reader of mine, you will know I have been advocating flat-panel satellite antennas as the next big thing in satellite communications for years – and on top of that, they eliminate the carbuncles from the face of very beautiful yachts!
Flat panels are ideally suited for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) networks. The OneWeb LEO satellites require satellite handovers approximately every two to three minutes, depending on the user terminal’s geographical location. As such, a flat panel is designed to electronically scan over a wide field of view within hundreds of microseconds for seamless handovers. A conventional parabolic antenna is too slow on its own so multiple parabolic antennas are required. The flat panel product design focus is on the optimisation of size, weight, power and cost, with seamless connectivity.

e3 Systems / Yachting Gives Back Cycling
As mentioned last month, we are holding the 5th instalment of our extremely popular e3 Systems Cycle Challenge on Friday 21st April, focused on captains, engineers, crew and colleagues in the industry. I am pleased to say that it was fully signed up in less than 3 days this year.
We are riding from the superb new Marina Tramuntana in Puerto Soller, westwards along the Ma-10 -one of the world’s most beautiful cycling routes- through the picturesque village of Deia and onto the Mirador Sa Foradada, then back for lunch in Soller.
This challenging ride of around 40km has been fully funded by us and our supporting partners; Speedcast, Swisspath Yachting and Intellian. It is free of charge to enter; the caveat being that riders donate generously on the day, every cent of which goes directly towards the work of the fine folk at Yachting Gives Back. So far, we have raised over €10,000 for YGB, which has provided food, computer equipment and even an industrial oven for homeless centres in Mallorca – and we’ve had a great deal of fun doing it!
We also look forward to seeing you at the Palma Superyacht Village at the end of the month.

Nikita Achkasov is the CEO of DeckProject and partner in Mida Yacht Concept Group. They are specialists in both modern teak deck technologies and installation, as well as intricate interior furnishings for yachts. Nikita was recently the star of the Miss Yacht Show through a documentary filmed in Dubai, showcasing the exciting expansion of his yachting company in the Middle East. Today we'll be talking about the challenges and opportunities that come with expanding into this dynamic and growing market, and gaining insights from Nikita's wealth of experience in the industry.

Let's start with the big questionwhy did you decide to expand your business to Dubai?
Well, Sophianna, the Middle East is one of the fastest growing regions in the world for luxury yachts. Dubai, in particular, has become a hub for yacht owners and enthusiasts, with its world-class marinas and infrastructure. We saw a great opportunity to bring our expertise in yacht refit and construction to this market and provide the same level of quality and service that we offer in Europe.
So how would you describe the market for yachting services in Dubai?
It's definitely a competitive market, with many est ablished companies offering a wide range of services. But we believe that our experience and expertise in both traditional and modern techniques set us apart. We're also very focused on customer service and ensuring that our clients are completely satisfied with the work we do.
What about the labor market in Dubai? Is it easy to find skilled workers?
It can be a challenge, but we've been fortunate to find s ome really talented individuals who are passionate about yacht building and refit. We're also investing in training programs to help develop the skills of our workforce and to ensure that we can continue to offer the highest level of quality.
What about the materials? Are there any differences in what you use in Dubai compared to what you use in Europe?
There are some differences in brands and quality. The only thing we should understand is how to adapt the temperature during the production process. Then on superyachts is everything under perfect climate control so as not to affect any material.
So what are some of the benefits of expanding your business to Dubai?
Well, for one, it allows us to tap into a new market and re ach a whole new group of potential clients. It also gives us the opportunity to work on some really exciting projects, like refitting and upgrading some of the incredible superyachts that are based in Dubai. And of course, there's the potential for growth and expansion as the market continues to develop.
And what about the challenges? Are there any particular obstacles that you've had to overcome in expanding to Dubai?
There are always challenges when you're starting a new business in a new market. One of the biggest challenges for us has been building relationships and establishing ourselves as a trusted and reliable partner in the industry. We've had to work hard to prove ourselves and earn the trust of our clients. But I think we're on the right track and we're already seeing some great results.
So how do you see the future of the yachting industry in the Middle East?
I think it's a very exciting time for the industry in this region. There's a lot of growth and development happening, with new marinas and infrastructure being built all the time. I believe that Dubai and the rest of the Middle East will continue to be a major player in the yachting world for years to come, and we're excited to be a part of that growth.
Nikita , it's been a pleasure talking with you. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences with us.

Chef's Chat Dean Harrison
Dean Harrison hails from a small beachside town in Australia. Maybe this explains his calm, positive and adventurous attitude. At age 18, he left home and travelled straight to the other side of the world, Europe. If it was adventure he was seeking, he definitely got it! His travels on both sail and motor yachts, big and small, motorbikes and cargo planes have taken him through rough seas - even got him captured by Libyan rebels! But Dean is focused on the positive and beautiful things in life, like his encounters with nature or having royalty visit him in the galley. Whether he’s putting dishes together or capturing his travels on photo and film, he definitely likes to make things look appealing!
The Islander #308
Why did you want to become a chef on yachts?
In short, it was the only thing I was good at. The usual story of the chef that hated school but loved cooking. Growing up and working in a small beachside town, I fell in love with the ocean. I always crave being near it. My other passions are scuba diving, free diving and anything on the water, basically. So, combining my love of all these things it made sense to work within the yachting world. As a freelance yacht chef, I can create the work/life balance that suits me. I can go anywhere in the world when I want to. The geographical independence and following the high seasons wherever they are, offers the financial freedom of being able to secure jobs all year round.
How would you describe your culinary style?
Honestly, I feel very comfortable with my cooking style after catering to so many clients. I started my first boat trying to do all crazy molecular stuff, but that's just not me. It may sound cliché, but I just focus on sourcing amazing ingredients and putting my spin on them with a lot of Asian influence and without too much fuss. I see the focus on sourcing good ingredients as the future trend and I hope the leading chefs don’t go back to overcomplicating things. My signature dish is probably my Big Mac Bao Bun!
Many chefs with their own restaurants always talk about food cost. As a yacht chef, is this on your radar?
Well, I still have a bit of a small boat mentality so I’m still cautious about how I spend the budget. Saying that though we are in the industry of providing the best of the best experience for the guest and there shouldn’t be restrictions when it comes to food. It’s different from owning a restaurant, which I have no intention of ever doing. Possibly a cafe, as I love work/life balance more than anything. Owning a restaurant takes all of your time and I'm not about that. I've never been one to "chase Michelin stars" so to speak. I want to chase life experiences. I’ve already had Prince Albert visit my galley for a chat, which was a proud moment as a chef. But I have a lot of other passions and projects within the yachting industry that I would like to undertake in the future.

I’ve seen your videography and photography work on Instagram @theyachtchef – well done on securing that handle! And for illustrating nicely how you go from one adventure to the next. Tell us about your most frightening, bizarre, magical moments.
I've had two frightening moments. The first one was ge tting caught in a storm between Australia and New Zealand for 6 days and losing the stabilisers. I truly thought we were going to capsize! The other one was getting captured by Libyan rebels and being held for almost 24 hours while our home states negotiated our release. As for magical moments; I've had tons and tons
of these! Being face to face with whale sharks in Papua New Guinea; swimming with the friendliest dolphins in New Zealand; handing out presents and candy to the locals in Vanuatu – these are just a few that come to mind from the past 12 years of yachting.
I’m sure that reading this interview will make people dream of food and travel! Which country would you recommend for a great culinary experience?
Not so much a country, but these are the cities I love for foo d exploration: Singapore, Mexico City, Melbourne, Bangkok and New York to name just a few.
…. Let’s start booking flights and tables!

Raising the Bar
Engaging, Inspiring and Retaining Superyacht Talent
Passman
‘Raising the Bar’ consists of a diverse group of Superyacht industry professionals who came together in February 2021 and formed a ‘Thinktank’ with the purpose of identifying issues and putting forward suggestions for ways to improve our industry. Over the course of the past two years, the members have given freely of their time and expertise, and continue to do so. Some of the ideas they have put forward include the creation of industry career maps (soon to be hosted at www.SuperyachtIndustryCareers.com ), to help manage crew expectations and rates of progression. In addition, they have researched why crew suddenly leave positions, as well as what the true cost of crew turnover is.
Last month, two of our Raising the Bar Thinktank members, Fiona Maureso of Northrop & Johnson and Chloé Collet of YPI Crew, presented some of our findings during Quaynote’s Improving Yacht Crew Retention conference in Nice. Over the course of the next few months, we will be sharing this data both here and through various social media outlets.
The more informed we are as an industry, the better decisions we can make to encourage owners, owners’ representatives and other key stakeholders to do so too.
The nature of our industry is changing. As it grows and matures and we welcome the next generation of crew into the fold, the industry will also need to change to support crew in new and different ways, as well as better manage guest and crew expectations.
Overall crew turnover within the industry remains stubbornly high. In Impact Crew’s 2015 survey, it was revealed that 78% and 69% of Junior Interior and Deck
Crew respectively, left within 12 months of taking on a new position. Average shoreside staff turnover rates are between 6% and 13%. Yes, Amazon does beat them all at 150%, but it costs Amazon a quarter of its profits.
The cost of replacing crew and staff runs far higher than the tangible expenses of recruitment, travel expenses, severance pay, etc.
There’s a raft of other costs that fly under the radar. What about the ‘little’ mistakes a crew member makes because they were unfamiliar with a piece of equipment or product, or the extra time they take to complete tasks as they become familiar with the intricacies of that particular yacht? Are additional day workers taken on, or do the expenses ramp up as they ‘update’ the stores to their standard? Not to mention the time they ‘steal’ from more senior crew with their questions.
From the surveys undertaken by the members of Raising the Bar, it is estimated that on average it costs about €60,000 to replace a Captain and even junior

crew are around the €15,000 mark – and that’s without factoring in time on board and day workers.
If you lose three junior interior crew in one year, that’s about the same, or less, as employing a fourth person!
Now that 3:1 rotation/structured leave doesn’t sound so expensive after all if it prevents burnout and increases longevity. It’s not going to work for every yacht, but it might be worth considering for some.
The industry attracts some amazing individuals, but we also lose them for a variety of reasons. Not just on board as they surf from one yacht to another, but from the industry altogether when it’s time to step ashore. Retaining more ex-crew within this unique industry will be hugely beneficial, with the wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding they can bring.
By appreciating and addressing the reasons, finding a range of solutions, and spreading the word, we will
hopefully fulfil our aspiration of Raising the Bar –Engaging, Inspiring & Retaining Superyacht Talent. There is still more work to be done. How to become a
written by The Crew Coach photos by The Crew Coach
Confidence is one of the most important traits a leader can have. But it is about having the right confidence. Arrogant leaders believe they are better than others and have nothing more to learn whereas confident leaders are secure in themselves and are dedicated to serving their teams. Confidence inspires trust, inspires others to follow you and gives a positive impression that helps you achieve your goals. But how do you become confident as a leader?
Focus on your team's needs
• Listening to your team is the first step in becoming a confident leader. The more you know about your team and their needs, values and strengths, the better equipped you'll be to help them leverage them. This will lead to increased productivity on board and better morale.
• Ask the crew how they feel about their job, what they want from it and whether there's anything that can be done to make things better for them. A great time to do this would be during their performance review.
• Ensure you have a 2-way communication channel rather than following a top-down communication. (Given the hierarchical structure in yachting, the one-directional communication approach is quite common.)
• Facilitate a culture whereby crew are encouraged to voice their opinion and for their opinions to be heard and considered. This will help build trust between everyone on the team because they know they won't get shut down or ignored when voicing an opinion that differs from yours (or anyone else's). In addition, it promotes inclusivity and collaboration.
Empower others
When you empower others, you're giving them the tools they nee d to succeed. You're trusting them with responsibility and allowing them to make decisions on their own. You're helping them develop as leaders by providing guidance and feedback when needed.
Empowerment is not just about letting go of control; it's also about creating a culture where people feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes without fear of being reprimanded or punished for doing so.
Practice self-awareness
Self-awareness inspires greatness. You need to be open to re ceiving feedback and have an awareness of how you come across in order to lead effectively. Self-awareness is a skill that takes time and practice, but it can help you become more confident in your leadership role by increasing your understanding of:
• Your strengths and weaknesses
• What your team needs from you
• Your blind spots
• How to lead by example - if you are not leading by example then it's hard for anyone else in the company to follow suit!

Be authentic and transparent with your team
Being authentic and transparent with your team is a gre at way to build trust. As a leader, don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and share aspects of yourself that you normally keep hidden. This helps build rapport and trust. Ask your team for feedback, being open about what you don't know allows others on your team to help fill in those gaps for you - and that's something that will make them feel valued and respected. Remember, being a leader doesn't mean you have to be perfect.
Delegate tasks
Delegating tasks is a great way to give your crew opp ortunities to grow. If you don't delegate, you will be stuck doing everything yourself and that can fast-track your way to burnout! It's important to trust your team and give them the freedom to do their jobs; they will feel valued and trusted.
If they make mistakes or don't do something exactly as you would have done it, don’t belittle or punish them for it. Rather, give your time and guidance to show them how you would prefer for it to be done. Treat it as an opportunity for growth.

How to become a Plastic-Free Yacht
written by Save the Med photos by Save the Med
Yacht owners and crew are all too familiar with the ever-present plastic pollution in our oceans. Whilst many have a genuine desire to reduce their plastic footprint, the reality is that going plastic-free can be a challenge. One such challenge is trying to navigate the sea of greenwashing and false advertising. Products marketed as “plastic-free” or “eco” alternatives can still be harmful to the environment.
Enter the Plastic Free Balearics Certification program. This project is all about plastic reduction made easy - a handy toolkit for businesses in the hospitality industry to reduce their consumption and use of single-use plastic, or even get rid of it for good. This project is geared to help business owners make the right choices and avoid “fake” alternatives. They have done all the research, so you don’t have to.
Developed by Save the Med and Ibiza Preservation Foundation, it launched in June 2021 in collaboration with Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera, and Plastic Free Menorca. The programme already assessed over 150 Balearic businesses in their journey towards becoming establishments free of single-use plastics.
To date, 81 hospitality sector companies (a total of 97 establishments) including hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés, and now yachts, have earned certifications. This resulted in preventing more than 21 tonnes of plastic waste!
When it comes to reducing plastic pollution, the programme is even more ambitious than the recently passed Balearic waste law (8/2019), which bans the sale of single-use plastic products in the hospitality sector. This positions the Balearic hospitality sector at the forefront of the fight against single-use plastics and contributes to the transformation of the islands into a green and responsible tourist destination.
The Falcao Uno is the first yacht to be certified “Plastic Free Guardian” in Mallorca.
“We decided to get certified because the programme was well aligned with the measures that we were already taking, such as reducing our waste generation and
keeping our carbon footprint at a minimum. The PFB team did a thorough job to ensure we were doing it the right way and guided us on the alternatives we had when eliminating single-use plastics. The certification puts us in a pioneering position among our customers and we have received a lot of positive feedback about it,” said Carlos Samblás, owner of Falcao Uno Yacht Events.
It’s with this objective in mind that the Plastic Free Balearics program is also being implemented in the fast-paced world of yacht racing.
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue in sports, as the industry recognises its role in promoting positive environmental and social change.
In 2022, Save the Med joined the SPAIN SAILGP TEAM as Race for the Future Partner, working with them throughout the year to reduce their plastic footprint. Indeed, organisations such as 11th Hour Racing and SailGP have demonstrated that sailing fast doesn’t mean you have to forget about the planet. In the end, who wants to race across an ocean of plastic?
But whether on a racing yacht, a luxury cruise or a llaüt, we all have the shared objective; a clean and healthy Mediterranean Sea.
With its ambitious new program to regenerate and restore biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea, Save the Med sees Mallorca as the perfect place to begin practising a regenerative lifestyle - free of unnecessary waste and pollution and filled with hope and good practices.
The “Plastic Free Balearics” team is now offering a unique opportunity for 15 businesses in Mallorca to participate in the Certification Programme for free until September 2023, thanks to the support of CaixaBank and Fundació Sa Nostra. Want to jump aboard?

Feeling Pressure
The Islander #308
In life, every challenge is there to teach us something. View them as lessons instead of punishments. Take what you learn to benefit your future and never feel discouraged.Work on achieving the best version of yourself and learn to take responsibility for yourself instead of trying to escape it.
Staying professional
Although professionalism represents something different for everyone, there are some things that you can always do to save time and energy. One of them is having a clear ‘To-Do’ list not just for yourself, but also for the crew you work with every day. Make sure you and your crew mates are well aware of their tasks; especially deadlines!
One of the most important things to avoid is blame and negative talk (including negative self-talk). Instead, use a moment to clear your mind and calm yourself before proceeding to tackle a problem. A great piece of advice I can offer is the ‘3 min rule’. When under extreme pressure, your brain blocks and everything seems blurry. In situations like these, take 3 minutes to breathe and stabilize the level of oxygen, enabling you to think straight again. The importance of breathing to reduce stress is often underestimated.
this has been the case, find a polite way to communicate how you feel without being insulting or attacking in return. In a lot of situations, the other side will be unaware of having offended you. This is quite often the case when there are cultural differences. Always remember – we are not mind-readers! If the offending party does not want to understand how you feel, or even tries to deny they said it/did it, then it is appropriate and important to report the problem to the captain to avoid any reoccurrence. Never feel bad about protecting yourself!
Learn to develop a thick skin and not take things personally
It is absolutely OK to be emotional! Do not feel bad or we ak for having certain emotions - you are a human being.
But it’s very useful to learn your triggers and weaknesses so that you can manage them better and recognise when you are taking things too personally.
Always remember - you cannot and should not do everything! Working as a team allows everyone to excel and enjoy doing what they’re best at.
A challenge for some is to always be mindful of your actions and words. Whilst under pressure, our 'demons' may surface! Learn how to control and manage them to save you potential problems. My tip for you is to think twice before you respond. You may have misunderstood the point, or may be feeling defensive. Take time to process the information before responding.
Dealing with criticism and disrespect on board
Understand that not all criticism is negative. Mostly, it should be constructive and help you to see things differently and improve. But there may be occasions when the criticism is clearly destructive - or even offensive.
It is extremely important to know yourself before you step on a new 'adventure'. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Have a clear image of what you will not tolerate and remember that communication is key. Make sure you communicate clearly and receive instructions correctly. If in any doubt, communicate to avoid misunderstandings.
There are situations where it's not about criticism, but more about feeling offended or disrespected. If you feel
If you are facing (or have faced) anxiety while on board, try to see it as an opportunity to face your fears - instead of avoiding them. It’s very important to allow yourself to go through this process and learn from it (remember the 3 min rule!) The only thing that will NOT help is to turn your back on yourself. Growth and wisdom often come from uncomfortable situations. Always be your own biggest support in difficult times - practice self-love and self-care whenever you can!
When emotions and logic conflict with each other, confusion occurs. Before allowing your emotions to take over, tune into logic and look for facts that may (or may not) support your emotions. Chances are that you’re simply putting emotions before clear logical reason; taking things personally. Don't jump to conclusions and assumptions as you are more likely to regret impulsive reactions. Remember - patience is key!
In life, every challenge is there to teach us something. View them as lessons instead of punishments. Take what you learn to benefit your future and never feel discouraged. Work on achieving the best version of yourself and learn to take responsibility for yourself instead of trying to escape it.
Vice versa - do not take on others' actions as your own. Allow people space and time to recognise and resolve their own issuesunless you are asked to help.
83 Crew Life
Even when you’re feeling the pressure, don’t forget to support your crew! Working as a team will usually overcome challenges more than working as an individual.

Little Sewn Facts
written by Lucie Gardiner
photos by Ian Herdman Design
Ian Herdman has been designing and making bespoke sewn products for yachts for the past 10 years. His background in luxury merchandising has helped him to create yacht-specific solutions that are highly practical, but also look great. Here he gives his top tips to Chief Stews and HOH on the small products that help to make a big impact, improve efficiency, save precious time and help to further refine the guest experience.
Laundry Bags
Ordered in robust canvas these are durable, smart and easy to wash. For extra ease with sorting and returning laundry quickly, make sure to add a number or name for each cabin. Deep colours are more practical as less likely to show any marks.
Bed Linen
Consider having the same colour sheets throughout to make it easier on the laundry. Have an identifying label sewn in the reverse instead or distinct coloured piping to help speed the process.
Use a Caddy
No one wants to see cleaning products inside guest cabins or being moved around onboard. Instead of visible cleaning cloths and sprays, invest in easy-clean caddies with compartments for all your essentials and a discreet flap that covers any unsightly accoutrements.
Water-Resistant Beach Bags
These look smart with the vessel’s logo embroidered an d are loved by guests. They can also help avoid wet swimwear and towel marks spoiling a freshly made bed.
Table Protectors
This fine layer not only softens the impact on expensive easily marked surfaces but also helps whiten the look of tablecloths and gives a soft 'fine dining' feel to the table. Get them made-to-measure in soft towelling with a drawstring elasticated edge This allows quick changes when needed and the ability to be washed along with a standard white laundry load.
Quilted Drawstring Bags
When packing up the boat, these are your best friend as they protect fragile items that need to be stored. They are reusable, drastically reduce the need for bubble wrap and are compact enough to be easily stowed when not in use.
Be Cautious with Velcro

The rough side will ruin other fabrics, especially towelling. It is handy, but think carefully about where and how you use it. It can also destroy expensive fabrics in the wash and the tumble dryer. If you use Velcro for seating covers, ensure only the soft part is on the fabric, leaving the rough textured side on the furniture structure only.

Ship to Shore Interview with Darren Hunt
Yacht Captain to Yacht Management
interview
10 happy years on first yacht!
Darren was working on board an ocean-going tug in Den Helder, Holland, which was tied up alongside a beautiful old Feadship that had all British crew. He got talking to them and thought “that beats working in the North Sea”. So, whilst on leave, he spent the next few weeks trawling the local newsagents for yachting magazines. Darren tells me, “I spotted a crew agent’s advert and sent them my CV. Six months later, out of the blue, I got a reply. I went for the interview and landed a job on the world-famous yacht, Midnight Saga! I spent ten very happy years on board, travelling the world with a great crew and owner. Most of us have remained in touch all these years later.”
Darren Hunt is 53 years old and originally from Leicester but has lived on and off Mallorca since 2000. He has two wonderful grown-up children, Corinda and Danny, who currently live in the UK. He has been in yachting for 35 years, having fallen in love with sailing at an early age when his grandfather used to take him sailing when visiting his grandparents in Falmouth.
Darren’s family always wanted to live by the sea, so eventually, they moved to Gorleston on Sea, Norfolk. He joined the Sea Cadets at the age of 12, with a dream of joining the Royal Navy when he left school.
Darren says, “After leaving school, I was accepted at the Nautical College in Lowestoft where I trained for 2 years. For the next 6 years, I worked on board supply ships, cargo vessels and oil rig standby vessels. Throughout my 35-year yachting career, I worked my way up from Deckhand to Bosun, Officer of the Watch to Chief Officer and eventually to achieve my goal as Captain. The rest, as they say, is history!”
Email Darren: Darren@7ps.net
Great memories and experiences
If you ask any ‘yachtie’ about their highlights, their answer will always be the same; “The travel and the people.” Darren was lucky enough to be employed on board a yacht that did a 5-year around-the-world trip. He explains, “We covered pretty much everywhere but the Pacific Islands. My favourite destinations were Alaska, Canada, South East Asia and Chile. My favourite personal experiences were just as diverse - diving with Manta Rays in the Maldives and exploring fantastic cities such as New York, St Petersburg and Ho Chi Min, to name just a few, But let’s not forget lying on exotic beaches drinking Pina Coladas and having a laugh with a great crew, who have now become lifelong friends! Most of whom I’m happy to say have decided to call Mallorca their home.”

It started to feel more like a job than the ‘lifestyle’ I had previously been so lucky to have!
Crew
Islander #308
When he was working on Midnight Saga, they used to host an array of amazing guests such as, “Legends like the late Robin Williams and Eric Idol (and yes, both were as funny in real life as they were on the screen). We also had a multitude of 1990s Hollywood stars, TV stars and the odd supermodel!” Darren remembers.
Disasters and Disappointments
Darren experienced his share of rough times and tells me , “The lowest point for me (and all the crew on board) was almost making it to Antarctica. Whilst crossing the Drakes Strait, we encountered some seriously bad weather. So bad, it was decided we had to turn the yacht around just 150 nautical miles from the Antarctic Peninsula. Everybody cried tears of frustration as this was going to be the highlight of our global cruise! So near, but so far…I never got the chance to go back. So this destination remains firmly on my bucket list!”
He also had a pretty hair-raising experience when trying to navigate a 50-metre yacht through hundreds of small fishing boats off the coast of Vietnam. “Those of you familiar with this area know the men sit floating in small woven baskets that are carried by the fishing boats and are virtually impossible to see by sight or by radar. I’m happy to say we managed to sail through them without incident!” Darren explains.
Transitioning to Terra Firma
Like many, Darren eventually started to feel he was missing out on other aspects of life. Yes, he had travelled the globe and had the most amazing experiences, but he’d also missed out on so many important events. Darren recalls, “We used to spend 10 months a year at sea and although my yachting years are still some of the best years of my life, I just got tired. I also felt the dynamics between the crew, owners and guests started to change. It started to feel more like a job than the ‘lifestyle’ I had previously been so lucky to have! The yacht was your home and pretty much your whole life, and back when I started, they were like floating works of art that we took great pride in and learned all the skills to keep them looking pristine.”
Landing the perfect combination
The yacht refit and winter shipyard period was a time Darren also really enjoyed, so when he was approached to become a Project & Operations Manager by a very successful management company here in Mallorca, it
seemed like a natural progression. “The role definitely put my life skills to good use because, as an ex-crew member, I know how to run a boat! After gaining valuable experience working for one of the industry’s most reputable companies, my business partners and I now have a wonderful opportunity to set up our own Yacht Management company and are currently in the process of opening an office in STP Shipyard. Watch this space for 7P’s Yacht Management,” Darren excitedly tells me.
Back in the Day
For Darren, the crossings are the thing he misses the mo st. He recalls how special it was “…back in the day before 24hr satellite comms. I miss not having internet and phone access for 3–4 weeks! We were completely incommunicado from modern life! We got to read books (we couldn’t stream movies), watch DVD box sets, play cards and board games in the crew mess, and used to fish off the foredeck when lying at anchor. The ’Ode to Neptune’ (halfway) parties were pretty epic too!”
There are other things Darren misses about being at sea, “In the middle of the summer, when it’s roasting hot in Mallorca, I still really miss being out on the water! Also, the all-expenses-paid travelling! But spending more time with my kids, partner, family, and friends -and sleeping in my own bed- more than compensates.”
It’s all in the Planning
When Darren transitioned to land, he prepared well but still learned a few things. “I would advise people to be prepared financially because it’s a lot more expensive ashore than you might think. Also, have a plan and remember your 7Ps: Proper Prior Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Performance!” He also recommends having a budget and re-educating yourself for life ashore otherwise, you will keep returning to on-board life.
Darren’s final words are:
“Initially, I went into yachting for the lifestyle - not as a career move. I wish I knew back then what I know now - hindsight is a wonderful thing. But all in all, I have no regrets - I got to see the sea and travel the world! All my boxes were ticked!”

A Checklist to get yourself Boat Show Ready!
written by Clair Minto photos by Clair Minto
Boat show season is upon us and there is so much to think about, especially if you’re going straight from busy trips or charters. Here’s a handy checklist to help you out:
Try to find out in advance if you are hosting any events during the show; Brokers’ lunches; theme parties; are you part of the yacht hop, etc.?
What can you research and get ready for those events? Do you need to hire tables or equipment? Is the theme something you already have to hand or do you also need to plan this?
Will you need to organise extra help for any of the days? Do any of your crew know somebody? Try the new green deckie that just came from the crew house – he’ll have lots of unemployed friends! Or do you need to put an advert out or ask your favourite crew agent?
Do you need to liaise with your chef regarding meal services? Are you serving canapes throughout the day for visitors? How often will these be ready and how will they be served?
Will the chef be able to provide lunch for the crew each day or can you make an alternative plan? Lots of companies at the shows offer free lunches for crew. Find out from the captain or organisers what the logistics are for getting provisions or large items on board during the show. This may only be at certain times and you might not be able to get a car or van close to the boat for offloading.
How are you going to set up the cabins? Will you stage one room as ‘the kids’ room’? Will you show off different ways of configuring the beds? What will you have playing on the TVs?
Will you have a table fully set up? What décor are you planning to use and do you have a backup if it’s windy or you see the boat next door doing the exact same thing!?
Clair Minto info@chiefstewshop.com
Florists will be busy around boat shows – can you get at least a rough order in early? Are there any small arrangements you can do yourself?
Do you have a plan of who will be doing showings and a schedule of when they are? It’s always great to try and let everyone have a little break during the day to look around the show, where possible.
If you’re going to be doing tours, it can be helpful to have a trial run or get the person who’s done the most or who knows the boat best. Do a trial run so you know which route to take, and any fun facts to point out.
Are you ready for questions? Read through the boat spec so you know the draught; what engines you have; when the last refit was, etc. These are all favourite broker questions and never fear falling back on your stew training….”let me find out for you”!
Can you get yourself and your team involved in any workshops or training that will be going on? There are normally some really interesting things happening, but you may need to sign up.
Similarly, are you or the chef going to enter any of the competitions? They can be so much fun and great for team bonding but also require some pre-planning!
Are you handing out any giveaways? If so, do you have enough and where are you planning on displaying them? Finally, advice from an old captain… ‘if you’ve got time to lean, you’ve got time to clean’! Make sure the boat is spotless at all times!
With both the MYBA and Palma boat shows fast approaching, take a deep breath, make your lists and put your boat show smile on (you know the one!)and enjoy! I’ll see you there!

Yacht Incident Crew Interview Series
BRADLEY WOLSTENHOLME
Over the next few months, I would like to share with you interviews with crew members who have responded to medical incidents on board luxury yachts. These true life stories are of course a good reminder of the challenges of maritime medical care. From casualties on board for hours or even days, to potentially complex medical care carried out by nonmedical professional crew - and on a heavily moving platform. However, they also highlight the benefits of preparation and good simulation training. Also, the difference this can make to the first response to an incident and the longerterm recovery and effect on the rescuers themselves.
All interviews have the full permission of the persons involved to share their stories and experiences.
Bradley, thank you for your time today. Please tell me about yourself and your time in the yachting industry...
I am 34 years old, born in Manchester and have lived in Mallorca for the past 25 years. I have been working in the yachting industry for over 10 years, mainly on motor yachts of various sizes, and I have cruised worldwide during my time in the industry
So I am speaking to a veteran.. Well, a young one!
You were involved in a serious medical incident onboard a yacht. Bradley, can you describe the events to me as you remember them?
I was working on a motor yacht on a short crossing from Mahon to Palma, and we had to urgently evacuate the captain, with the assistance of Coastguard Search and Rescue. We had eight crew on board, all fairly new, and the sea was calm, as I remember.
It was early evening, dark already, I was on the bridge
with the captain, when he suddenly complained of severe pain in his chest and abdomen. I immediately asked a crew member to contact a telemedical ‘call the doctor’ service. Once on the line, a doctor supported me through the immediate medical first response. The doctor made a full assessment of the captain and then proceeded to make the decision to call for evacuation. From callout to point of evacuation took five hours, meaning we had to care for the captain onboard for an extended period.
What treatment did you need to provide and what actions did you take while he was onboard?
He remained conscious at all times, and in a lot of pain. We administered pain relief under the doctor’s instruction, monitored vitals, and made a full medical history report including symptoms in the lead-up to the pain, which was vital information for the telemed doctor to assess the severity of the situation. For the next few hours, we maintained a close eye on him

‘WHEN THE CAPTAIN IS THE CASUALTY’
until the coastguard arrived. We kept him warm and were advised to raise his legs in a shock position to assist with circulation and reduce the chest, leg and back pain.
What was the most challenging part of this situation?
I was the mate at the time and I had never driven the yacht alone before, so I had to take responsibility for the care of the casualty as highest in command, prepare the crew for the evacuation, and safely navigate the vessel into port. So it became a huge responsibility very suddenly!
This situation pushed me to my absolute limits. It felt overwhelming because the captain was also a close friend, and the situation could have resulted in a very bad consequence.
But as I understand Bradley, you kept a cool, calm head, put your training into motion and handled the situation quite heroically, leading to a positive outcome. Well, I handled things to the best of my ability. We carried out regular medical drills and annual training with a medical professional, so I think that made me more prepared in the moment.
A few hours after the captain reached the hospital, I spoke with his medical team and they said that he was suffering from an inflamed aorta, (this is the largest artery running through the central core of the body). Without urgent evacuation to the right facility, there was a risk of a serious stroke or heart attack, or the aorta could have ruptured, which would have likely been unsurvivable.
So your actions truly were life-saving for the captain - and everyone onboard in keeping them safe. Can you tell me a bit more about how the casualty was transferred from
the vessel? Was it on a stretcher, and do you remember any challenges with the evacuation procedure?
It was quite a simple procedure because it was planned and controlled and not an emergency maneuver. We all assisted to help them transport him from the bridge to the side birding access where the coastguard had come to transport him. We had to be careful to plan our route, remove obstacles and ensure the vessel was as steady as possible, and it all went smoothly.
You mentioned earlier that you put great importance on training regularly. Do you feel this was of benefit in the real scenario?
I believe so. Most crew are not medical professionals, an d as you have told me before in training, even the best medical team does not work well together without any prior training and simulations. Crew always need a regular reminder of how to quickly assess a casualty so they can respond quickly and efficiently.
And did you receive any emotional support after the incident?
I am still in touch with my ex-captain. We have a close relationship as he lives in Mallorca with his family. I think having this friendship helped me as we could talk about the incident afterwards. I think it would be important to talk to someone if you could not talk to the casualty after the incident or if you need further support.
What did you take away from this experience, Bradley?
A medical incident can go from a small concern to a serious situation very quickly. Being reminded of how to act quickly as a team in this situation with regular thorough medical training is key.
Thank you for your time, Bradley.

How to squash your Limiting Beliefs
written by Virtual Pursers photos by Virtual Pursers
We can only achieve what we believe. Limiting beliefs are thoughts/opinions that one believes to be the absolute truth. They tend to have a negative impact on one’s life by stopping them from moving forwards and growing on a personal and professional level.
Everyone has the potential to achieve great things, no matter their circumstances. But fear often holds us back - we tell ourselves stories, play it safe and end up living only half a life. We create stress and internal conflict by holding ourselves back. When we change our stories to create a new truth about who we really are, then we start to feel happy and fulfilled. But why and how does this occur?
As humans, we are constantly aiming to make ourselves as comfortable as possible. This includes avoiding negative emotions like frustration, anxiety, anger, etc.
Limiting beliefs acts as a defence mechanism to avoid these emotions. Often they are triggered by situations where you have experienced suffering in the past.
Our tendency to interpret new information as confirmation of our pre-existing beliefs is called confirmation bias, which means that we often believe what we want to believe.
How to Take Back Control of Your Limiting Beliefs
• If you find yourself feeling fearful or resisting an activity, stop and be aware. You’re currently in a state of ‘low mood’ thinking.
• Write it down! What is it that you think you cannot do? Understand that what you are thinking is not necessarily true.
• Look for evidence. Why aren’t you able to achieve XYZ? Are these legitimate reasons or just excuses? Are you able to overcome these? Is it just difficult and you are not willing to? That’s also ok, but it doesn’t mean you can’t.
• Be accountable. Thoughts and feelings come and go. They are not the truth about who you are. There are plenty of tools to help you combat negative emotions such as stress and anxiety - use them! Breathe and recentre.
• Talk it out! As the saying goes, friends are better than therapy. Find someone you trust to share your thoughts with.
Of course, changing a belief doesn’t automatically result in changed behaviour - you still have to do the work. For example, change “I’m not good with money” to “In the past, I haven’t been good with money, but I’m working towards changing my spending habits.” Or, “I am learning how to be financially responsible.” Take one step at a time.
Create a new mindset and a new narrative. Become confident and courageous - what have you got to lose?

Adds Rolex to its Luxury Brand Range
ROUGE Mallorca opened its doors in the heart of Palma in 2019 in one of the most iconic landmark buildings in Paseo del Borne. The luxury store has generated excitement among fashion enthusiasts, who can find a wide range of high-end brands such as Hermès, Chanel and Dior all under one roof.

Thanks to the good feedback from clients and following their requests, ROUGE Mallorca decided to include Rolex as another exclusive brand that can be found at the flagship store.
Rolex is one of the most renowned luxury brands in the world, famous for its iconic watches. With an annual production of around one million watches, one might assume that there should be plenty of Rolexes available for purchase. However, this is not the case, especially for the Daytona, Pepsi and Batman, among other models which are in short supply around the world.
Rolex watches are designed and built to last thanks to the dedicated watchmakers, designers and engineers whose skills and knowledge are transferred into every Rolex timepiece. Rolex is proud to present the work of these outstanding specialists.
Wearing a Rolex watch enables entry into a world of unlimited possibilities. Rolex’s story began when founder Hans Wilsdorf created the first waterproof wristwatch –the Oyster– and developed a range of timepieces that have become icons of watchmaking. Invented by Hans Wilsdorf, the Oyster Perpetual was brought to life thanks to the knowhow of employees sharing a passion for excellence, innovation and improvement.
The exclusivity and limited availability of Rolex watches add to their appeal, making them a universal status symbol that is highly coveted and recognisable worldwide. Rolex has deliberately put limits on the production of its watches, creating a sense of desire among consumers and generating long waiting lists. This exclusivity also prevents the market from being saturated with Rolex watches, maintaining their status as luxury items that hold their value.
At ROUGE Mallorca, clients can find a carefully curated selection of Rolex watches, chosen one by one to ensure their exclusivity and quality. They are collector's items and represent an excellent investment opportunity.
These exclusive models offer a unique chance for customers to own a piece of history and luxury that will hold its value over time.
Thanks to a unique collaboration with one of the best suppliers in the world, ROUGE Mallorca can offer inaccessible Rolex models that are obtained from the best auctions. All watches undergo an exhaustive quality control process to ensure they meet the highest standards, and customers can enjoy the immediate availability of new watches with their guarantee and full box set.
In case you're searching for a particular model or a highly coveted product, don't hesitate to get in touch with us. Our knowledgeable team will go above and beyond to find it for you using our extensive global network. We understand the value of your time and the importance of obtaining precisely what you're looking for, and we're committed to providing exceptional service to all of our clients.
We recognise that certain items may be challenging to locate, and that's why we've established a worldwide network of reputable suppliers and partners. Our team members are trained to communicate effectively and negotiate with these sources to ensure that you receive the best possible price and quality. With our expertise and resources, we are confident that we can fulfill your needs, no matter how rare or difficult to find the product is.
If you can get one of these watches, you will own a piece of history and luxury!

The Science of Photoprotection
written by Sylvia Wynans photos by Earthchild
Three types of molecules determine the colour of our skin: melanin - our skin pigment, haemoglobin - our red blood cells, and carotenoidsthe yellow, orange and red plant pigments.
These molecules not only give our skin its unique tones but also play a vital role in protecting it from environmental stressors, such as UV radiation. Together with flavonoids, polyphenols and vitamins C and E, carotenoids fuel the Antioxidant Network of our skin, the first line of defence against environmental stress and UV damage. The antioxidant network is a key component of the overall Photoprotective System in our skin. This is a sophisticated network of processes designed to limit and repair sun damage.
Studies on human skin show that the majority of dietary carotenoids accumulate in the outermost skin layer - the stratum corneum. Situated there, carotenoids work as antioxidants as well as sunscreening molecules, absorbing UV radiation and dissipating it as heat, just like in plants.
But, you don't just have to eat plants to get these benefits. Studies show that the most effective way to increase the levels of phytochemicals in our skin is by applying them topically.
Defend your skin with Plant Phytochemicals
Two of the biggest benefits of topical antioxidant application are:
• The skin attains much higher antioxidant levels than is possible with oral supplementation. Topical application of carotenoids or vitamins C or E can result in levels 10-40 times those achievable with supplements.
• The reservoir of antioxidants cannot be washed off and stays in the skin for up to 10 days after application.
From Scientific Enquiry to Skincare Innovation
After years of studying the Photoprotective System and the phytochemicals that support it, Quantum Pi was born: a concentrated and waterless All-inOne serum formulated to increase hydration, even skin tone, and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while protecting the skin against UV and Blue Light damage.
Unlike traditional sunscreens that use chemicals or minerals to form a shield on top of the skin, Quantum Pi supports the built-in defences of our skin, making it more resilient to UV damage.
Think about it this way: If traditional sunscreen is like putting up a shield to protect yourself from a storm, Quantum Pi is like reinforcing the foundation of your house to make it more resistant to the storm's impact. The formula is powered by three Clinically Tested Actives and 30+ of nature's most Phytonutrient-rich botanical extracts to deliver visible results.
Sun’Alg® uses Astaxanthin to protect against UV & Digital Blue Light skin damage, Sytenol® A (Bakuchiol) boasts anti-ageing and regenerative potential superior to retinoids, and Algomega Np® repairs and strengthens the skin barrier function.
Quantum Pi's unique approach to photoprotection goes beyond its impressive ingredients. By boosting the Antioxidant Network of our skin, Quantum Pi helps combat the harmful effects of UV light and protects against collagen and elastin depletion while increasing your skin’s resilience to damage.
With Quantum Pi, you can protect your skin from UV and Blue Light damage at all times - not just when you apply it. So if you're looking for a skincare solution that supports the most important protective system in your skin, try Quantum Pi today.

Ibiza JoySail signs up J Class Fleet
written by IPM Group photos by Ibiza JoySail
Ibiza JoySail will be joined by J Class yachts for their 2023 event from 28 September to 1 October, alongside a strong contingent of returnees from 2022, and some new entries as well.
"It is early days, of course, but we have had significant interest from almost all of the boats who participated last year and who want to do it again, which is a great tribute to Ibiza JoySail," said Regatta Director Nacho Postigo.
An invitational regatta
Due to the success of the 2022 edition, Ibiza JoySail is already receiving many requests to join the fleet in 2023. This is why, in order to maintain the essence, quality and spirit of this event, the organisation has decided to limit the number of participating boats. You can find the rules and conditions in the NOR published on the website www.ibizajoysail.com
The grace of the J Class
We can confirm that Svea , Topaz and Lionheart will join the I biza Joysail regatta, with others sure to follow. "We are super-excited to be going to Ibiza JoySail and are really looking forward to racing against the other Js," said Lionheart's captain Toby Brand. "It's always great to be racing with them, and this event is the kind where the owner can race with family and friends alongside the core crew. We know Ibiza and Formentera well and have been there many times in cruising mode. We consider STP to be part of the Lionheart family. We have been there for years and they always look after us extremely well, especially the office team there – we are big fans."
It is clear that the presence of the J Yachts represents an unambiguous nod of approval from one of the highestprofile superyacht sailing groups and follows a visit to the 2022 event by their new class secretary, Stuart Childerley. The world champion sailor and international race officer was clearly impressed by the excellent facilities and widespread expertise on offer at both STP Palma and Marina Ibiza.
Racing with new technologies
Keen not to rest on their laurels, Ibiza JoySail organisers have introduced an interesting change to the format of the opening race. Event Director Nacho Postigo explains:
He continues: " We will use robotic racing marks for that, so if the conditions in the Bay of Palma are too light to start, the race committee will hoist the 'follow me' flag and start motoring towards Ibiza. If the wind gets up in the channel, as it did in 2022, then we will set a start line with the robotic marks and go racing. The race committee could also shorten the course in the same way. The important thing is that the owners and crews have a good time, and it is not a struggle.”

"I always say the regatta is called Ibiza JoySail for a reason; it is not about having a hard time, so we will be using a new technology for the long race between Mallorca and Ibiza."

Legal Consequences
written by Dr Tim Schommer
of Delay in Yacht-Building Agreements
Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine have caused serious disruptions in supply chains worldwide. Not surprisingly, the yacht-building industry has been heavily affected. Even though many within the yachtbuilding industry have shown to be resourceful and found alternative options for their clients, many building projects are still affected by severe delay issues. Yacht builders often purchase their supplies from a multitude of manufacturers worldwide. Due to the complexity of a yacht-building project, delays of just one supplier often become a real issue. How can you deal with delay legally?
108 Owners World The Islander #308
In principle, the legal background is fairly simple: The parties of a yacht-building contract have to fulfil their contractual obligations in time. If they do not, specific circumstances, as well as the relevant clauses in the building contract, will clarify what the legal consequences are. These consequences may be additional payments to be made by the party in default. Additionally, or alternatively, a remedy can be the right to terminate the contract.
The main contractual obligation of the buyer is to pay the instalments on time. The main contractual obligation of the shipyard is to deliver the yacht to the buyer without defects at the agreed delivery date.
Delays on the part of the shipyard can have a variety of reasons. As a matter of principle, one can differentiate between reasons which are caused negligently and those for which the shipyard is not at fault. With respect to the first category, the parties normally agree that damages to be paid by the shipyard for the delay are either excluded (for some time), or limited, and/or capped.
Permissible delay and force majeure
It is not uncommon to include clauses in a building contract that allow the shipyard, under certain circumstances, to postpone the delivery – so-called “permissible delay”. For instance, a delay caused by a change order request by the buyer would be considered a permissible delay. Furthermore, shipbuilding contracts often grant the shipyard a few days of additional time to deliver the yacht without any legal consequences, a socalled “grace period”. However, not all delays can easily be attributed to the one party.
When negotiating and agreeing on a shipbuilding contract, special attention should be paid to how delays caused by third parties, such as suppliers, are dealt with. Additionally, so-called acts of God can interrupt the building process.
Such events are normally enumerated (exhaustively or not exhaustively) in so-called “force majeure” clauses. Due to Covid-19, force majeure clauses and related questions of interpretation have become the cause of many disputes. Not only should the definition of a
force majeure event be carefully considered, but also the notification obligations that fall upon the party intending to rely on it. Usually, the party that intends to rely on a force majeure event has only a specific amount of time after the event to inform the other party about the circumstances.
Consequences for non-permissible delay
If the delay does fall within the responsibility of one party, it is normally not considered permissible delay. Therefore, the responsible party has to bear the legal consequences of such delay. As mentioned above, most often the parties agree on a limitation of the legal consequences. Three principal legal consequences can be found in yacht-building agreements that might apply exclusively or simultaneously:
1. Liquidated damages : By agreeing on liquidated damages, the parties ex ante agree on which amount of damages is to be paid by day or week in case there is a breach of the obligation to deliver the yacht on time.
2. Contractual Penalty: Some parties agree that contractual penalties are to be paid in case of delay. The concept is similar to that of liquidated damages. However, it is not permissible in every jurisdiction. Depending on the wording of the contract, further damages can be claimed in addition to the penalty.
3. Termination/ Recission of the contract: The ultimate consequence of delay is the right to terminate and/ or to withdraw from the contract. Even though such a right to terminate the contract might seem like the ultimate tool to abandon a delayed project, it is always important to diligently consider the particular circumstances as well as the solvency of the involved parties when considering rescinding or terminating the contract.
In a nutshell:
Factually, delays can never be ruled out. Legally, the consequences of delay are manageable by negotiating appropriate compensation.
However, pay attention to the applicable national law. Also, plan ahead and agree under which circumstances extensions of the delivery date are permissible. In addition, make sure that the wording of the force majeure clause is appropriate.

SAILING WITH THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN 50 FOOT YACHT
Enjoying the luxury of your ‘own’ 50ft yacht but without the drawbacks of owning one yourself. It almost sounds too good to be true, but it really can be done. “By joining the Scorpion Yacht Club, you can sail away and enjoy the privacy of your own boat,” says yacht builder Dirk Oerlemans, founder of Scorpion Yachts. “But without all the hassle and additional high costs.”
As a member of the Scorpion Yacht Club, you can have access to the latest Scorpion Yacht designs, ranging from 40 to 50 feet, which are ready and waiting for you in Mallorca and Ibiza, among other places. “We take care of mooring, insurance, maintenance, service, any repairs and cleaning, so that all you need to do is enjoy all the benefits.” Including first and foremost, of course, a big financial advantage. “If you are the owner of a 50ft yacht, the costs per month can quickly add up to around €10,000 and, when chartering, around €3,000 per day. As a member of the SYC, however, you only pay €2,800, with guaranteed sailing at least eight times a month, from any port where the SYC has moorings.” And if you choose not to sail in July and August yourself, you can even recoup up to 20% of your annual cost as a charter bonus…. “Because then we can use the boats for external charters,” Dirk says.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
As a member of the SYC, you can book a boat very easily via our mobile app, in all the ports where we have moorings - with or without a skipper. Initially, you always sail with a skipper on board who also takes care of the cleaning, until you pass our ‘skipper exam’ and are allowed to sail on your own. The idea, then, is that you are always on board yourself, taking a maximum of eleven guests along with you. With your party, you can then enjoy a wonderfully casual day -a half-day or a full day- on the water, using everything on board at your disposal, including snorkelling gear, wakeboards, sups, tubes and a scuba jet, to then simply return the boat (fully refuelled) to the harbour afterwards.

Odyssey III was built by Benetti in 1967 and began life as hull number FB67. She is one of the iconic Italian shipyard’s Mediterraneo 33 series and was first launched as ‘Admiral Bolitho’.
Odyssey III was purchased by the Sykes family in 2016, and the UK’s premier superyacht builder, Pendennis Shipyard, was tasked with restoring her to her full majesty.
The Sykes family was fully aware that the scope of works to be carried out was extensive. With plans to transform the deck spaces into desirable alfresco living spaces, reconfigure the crew quarters, upgrade all the internal systems and completely refurbish the interior, first, the structural integrity of the yacht had to be assured. Upon further inspection, the extent of the corrosion became evident.
What ensued was an intensive and painstaking process of steelwork repairs and structural works before the more cosmetic aspects could even be considered. The yacht needed to be returned to Class for commercial operation as a charter vessel.
“The rebuild and refit of Odyssey III was an incredible journey for all involved,” comments Toby Allies, Managing Director at Pendennis Shipyard. “For us, it was a precious opportunity to meet a family who shared our passion for restoring vessels such as this to their former glory.”
The project was managed by A2B Marine. “Odyssey III arrived in Falmouth in need of a serious refit. It’s thanks to the vision, dedication and creative input of the owners, along with the tremendous effort of all involved, that this fantastic little ship has emerged as a triumphantly individual and truly gorgeous yacht,” commented Chris Roberts.
Creating exterior decks that optimised the available space and offered versatility of use would be key to the yacht’s future as a charter yacht and add to her appeal for a future owner. Great care was taken to enhance the available amenities whilst not detracting from the yacht’s original style and subtleties.
113 Owners World The Islander #308
Odyssey III now boasts a reconfigured sun deck with a u-shaped dining area to aft and freestanding sun loungers amidships to make the most of the view.
Towards the bow, there is a smaller elevated deck space with casual seating and barbecue facilities.
Significant to the boat’s exterior amenities and one of the greatest structural changes to take place was the integration of a side-boarding ladder. Not an original feature, the design replicates one used aboard early Feadship motor yachts and improves access to and from the water, particularly when the boat is at anchor.
Other enhancements to take place during the refit included new teak decks, an exterior repaint, underwater lights, the installation of atanchor stabilisers, upgrade of all mechanical and technical systems, new audio-visual systems, a refurbished interior and new tenders.
Odyssey III can accommodate eight guests across four suites. The arrangement comprises two doubles and two twins, all of which are en suite and appointed to the same superlative standards.
In the main saloon, there is a spacious lounge, intimate dining table and a bar. To aft, a handmade polished teak table is the centrepiece and meals can be enjoyed here whilst benefitting from the shade provided by the deck above.
Rich wood panelling runs throughout the interior and is complemented by neutral carpets and furnishings. Discreet audio-visual systems ensure entertainment without detracting from ambience, and the separate crew quarters provide ample living space as well as functional service areas for a team of up to seven.
This emblematic canoe-stern motor yacht has charm and elegance in abundance. The yacht
114 Owners World The Islander #308
is in immaculate condition and, thanks to her commercial certification as a charter vessel, presents a new owner with enormous scope of possibility.
"Words really can't do justice to her magnificent splendour", says Tim Langmead of Camper and Nicholsons, who has the yacht listed for sale. “Her pristine exterior profile cuts a majestic vision when underway or at anchor and, enhanced with all the luxurious comforts of modern life, she is arguably something of a collector’s item.”
Today, Odyssey III embodies classic yachting glamour exactly as intended. Restored to her full former glory and indeed surpassing it, Odyssey III is a yacht with a new lease of life.

The Live-in Superyacht ‘Mogul’ Designed by Denis
Suka
written by The Islander photos
Social media influencer Denis Suka is the latest star for superyacht enthusiasts, surpassing even some legends in terms of fame. However, before we get to know more about why he is making the most noise in the yachting community, it is important to learn a bit more about the person behind the name.
Denis hails from Norway and began his journey in yachting in 2018, when he launched his Instagram page @theyachtmogul . Over the next three years, Denis achieved over 1 million followers on his account. Rightly so, considering that Denis Suka has shown an intense dedication to studying and understanding how yachts are much more than just passenger vehicles, but also a marvel of design. This is when Denis decided to change things up and address the gap in the market.
According to him, there were not many yachts that were worthy of being mentioned solely upon their design and creativity, and this is why Denis wanted to make something that would stand out as one in a millionfar more than what people had seen him achieve with @theyachtmogul.
However, since he knew that his talents were mostly as a social media influencer, he teamed up with Bhushan Power Design Studio, one of the leaders in the luxury boating industry, to make his dream come true. The result? A spectacular marvel of a yacht known as ‘Mogul’ measuring 295 feet with a 26-foot infinity pool,
owner's suite with floor to ceiling windows, a private hot tub and a touch-and-go helipad.
Although this design is quite expensive and has an expected build time of 3 years with a price of $180 to 200 million, Denis says:
“There is a huge demand for designs like Mogul as it complies with the current market trend for futuristic designs.”
Although there is a lot of scope for Denis to develop in this field, he wishes to play it low and dedicate his time to his Instagram account, as he believes there is nothing more important than learning on the job. This is why Denis continues to stay in touch with his audience and improve his talents until he is ready to release the next banger. Until then, make sure you follow him on his social media profiles linked below.

written by Linda Cartlidge photosbyAsiaPacificSuperyachts& TourismAuthorityofThailand
Seychelles is a tropical paradise awaiting discovery. It is made up of 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean and is 900 miles off the East African coast. Seychelles offers something for everyone, from island exploring and sampling the Creole cuisine to active adventurers who love nothing more than hiking.
118 Owners World The Islander #308
Seychelles’ granite and coral islands are scattered across a secluded corner of the Indian Ocean and serve as havens for some of the world’s rarest flora and fauna. So rare, that the Vallée de Mai, which grows the legendary coco-demer, was formerly believed to be the biblical Garden of Eden’s original location!
Seychelles is a virtually untouched archipelago that boasts perfect white-sand beaches, turquoise seas and lush forests. The islands are commonly associated with exquisite natural beauty, wonderful harmony, and a near-perfect climate with temperatures ranging from 26 to 33 degrees Celsius, earning the archipelago the nickname “land of perpetual summer”.
Seychelles brims with activities for both the adventurous and the laid-back. It is, indeed, the ideal location for doing everything - or nothing at all! If you enjoy diving, sailing or fishing, there are opportunities aplenty. Hikers, too, will find both challenging and casual, well-marked trails leading through lush greenery and along granitic coastlines. There’s everything from island-hopping
on your yacht to a luxury spa at a high-end, beachfront resort - there’s no better place if you want to recharge your batteries.
Boasting over 491 kilometres of coastline, the most identifiable feature of Seychelles is its beaches.
Visit the popular Anse Source d’Argenton La Digue, which is frequently coined “the most beautiful beach in the world” and was the backdrop of major Hollywood films such as Castaway.
Or if you would prefer to live the private island fantasy, visit the hidden gem, Anse Major found on the northwest coast of the most populated island, Mahé. With no roads leading to this haven, you can either hike up or treat yourself to a water taxi to be greeted by dramatic, yet tranquil scenes.
Although the image that Seychelles conjures up is one of beaches and relaxation, the reality is that it’s an active and adrenaline junkie’s paradise! With so much ocean to explore, there’s just about every water sport you can think of, from snorkelling and scuba diving, to paddle boarding and whitewater rafting.
The Islander #308 Owners World 119
However, it’s not just water activities that Seychelles offers. As fifty percent of Seychelles is a national park or reserve, there’s ample opportunity for hiking and wildlife spotting. Hike up Mount Copolia in Mahé Island, or for more experienced hikers, the Morne Blanc trail is an uphill climb through mist forests with a stunning viewpoint overlooking the coast.
Wildlife lovers might encounter any of the 12 endemic species of birds, some of which were saved from extinction. The island is home to over 7,000 species of animal, plant and fungi, with research and conservation efforts taking place across the islands to restore and maintain the wildlife of Seychelles.
If birdwatching is a favourite past-time, then Seychelles is full of opportunities. Whether it’s the elusive Seychelles black parrot -the country’s national bird- or the bare-legged Scops owl, which is so rare that it was thought to have been extinct until it was spotted back in 1959, you can experience once-in-a-lifetime sightings.
Otherwise, Seychelles is home to over 1,000 recorded species of fish, which is why snorkelling and diving are particularly popular activities.
As Seychelles is just 900 miles off the eastern coast of Africa, many visitors use this opportunity to combine their island paradise getaway with an equally once-ina-lifetime safari experience. Combining a Seychelles visit with a migration safari or a ‘Big 5’ safari offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. As Seychelles International Airport is served by numerous direct flights to safari bases such as Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa, the logistics of combining your Seychelles visit with a safari is incredibly simple.
The best time to visit Seychelles is between April-May and OctoberNovember, as these months are much less windy than other months.
However, as Seychelles is just below the equator, all the islands benefit from warm, optimum beach weather all year round. Temperatures rarely drop below 20°C and the Indian Ocean boasts an average temperature of 26°C, guaranteeing a pleasantly warm day on the beach.

Have a Heart

photos by Marc Fosh
They might look intimidating, but artichokes are simple and delicious. OK, I know they can be a little fiddly and they do need a lot of care and attention to prepare, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s easy and you’ll wonder why you never bothered to prepare and cook them before.
The artichoke has a long and interesting history. For many years, although it was cultivated and eaten in Italy, it was unknown in France. During the 17th Century, it was thought to be an aphrodisiac and women were not allowed to eat them! Fortunately, that myth is no longer believed. Artichokes are rich in fibre, vitamin C, potassium and folic acid, as well as being naturally fat and cholesterol-free. Moreover, the leaves of the artichoke are known to reduce levels of bad cholesterol and increase levels of good cholesterol (HDL or Omega-3 fatty acids).
After Italy, Spain is the largest producer of artichokes, growing about 30% of the world’s supply and is the major exporter. Several different varieties are grown around the world and cultivation is grouped geographically.
In Spain, the type that is most widely available is known as “Blanca de Tudela”. The varieties vary slightly in shape, size and colour (green and/or purple). They are generally harvested in autumn and winter in Spain, although they can be found in markets through spring.
When buying artichokes, look for ones that seem heavy for their size. Artichokes with a tight leaf formation are also preferred and the leaves should “squeak” when pressed together. Heavy browning on an artichoke usually indicates it’s past its prime. They do not keep very well in their fresh state but once cooked (traditionally in a Blanc), they will keep for 2-3 days.
So, is all the effort worth it? Absolutely! But the first step is to simply roll up your sleeves and get on with it. To prepare whole artichokes for poaching, pull off the lower, outer and discoloured petals. Trim the stem to form a flat base so that the artichokes will stand upright. Cut off one-fourth to one-third of the leaves straight across the top. Rub the cut surfaces
122 Owners World The Islander #308
with lemon juice to prevent browning. Stand the artichokes on their flat bases in a non-aluminium pot with about 2 inches of water, lemon juice and seasoning. Cover, and gently simmer the artichokes for 15-20 minutes. Once cooked, they should be eaten within 24 hours. If all that sounds like too much hard work, you could outsource the job entirely and start with jarred or frozen artichoke hearts.
Artichokes are incredibly versatile; they can be used as a garnish with other ingredients, or as a first course in their own right. They are fantastic in risotto, make a great soup and are often eaten with hollandaise or aioli. They also make great partners for potatoes, truffles, mushrooms, bacon and anchovies. In Italy, raw baby artichokes are finely sliced and tossed in olive oil, lemon juice and shaved parmesan to make an excellent appetiser that’s bitter, sharp and salty. Here in Spain, they are known as “Alcachofas” and the Spanish love them fried with Serrano ham and garlic. In my recipe, I’ve added wild mushrooms, truffles (optional) and a little dry sherry.
ARTICHOKES WITH WILD MUSHROOMS, TRUFFLES & SERRANO HAM
Ingredients: Serves 4
8 globe artichoke hearts, cooked (you could use good quality artichokes from a jar)
80g Serrano ham, diced
200g mixed wild mushrooms, cleaned and chopped
8 thin slices of fresh truffle (optional)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
Juice of one lemon
2 tbsp chopped chives
120ml dry sherry or white wine
150ml vegetable stock
1 tbsp flour
4 tbsp olive oil
Seasoning
Quarter the artichokes and scoop out the hairy centre with a spoon. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic until soft and add the wild mushrooms and Serrano ham. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then add the flour and stir well. Add the dry sherry and vegetable stock, stir well and cook for about 2 minutes until the sauce thickens. Add the artichokes and lemon juice and warm them through. Scatter with sliced truffles and chopped chives. Season to taste and serve immediately.
