Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines. The year is chugging along nicely and Spring is definitely in the air. April is sometimes a wet month but ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers’ and if we are heading into a lush summer like last year then the flowers and trees will appreciate this extra bit of rain that may or may not happen. Easter is a bit later this year with Easter Sunday on the 21st April. The shelves in the shops are full of chocolate goodies and traditional eggs (and some have been this way since Boxing Day). Hopefully the weather will be good and perhaps this will be the start of the barbecue and picnic season. The Island is definitely coming alive again after a sleepy winter and you can find details of events happening across the Island on pages 8 and 9. Watch out for April Fools on the 1st day of the month!!!! I hope you enjoy reading your local community magazine each month and please where possible support the advertisers by using their services and telling them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a cracking April and look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Procurement, Waste Management, Special Projects & Forward Planning. Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 The last month has been a great time for the Island. The BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards announced that Bembridge has been voted ‘Village of the Year’ and Sandown beach was voted ‘Beach of the Year’. How incredible, though very deserved, that the Island has won two such prestigious awards. The award judges described Bembridge as a “Wonderful coastal setting with a pier and lifeboat station, plus a busy village community with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. With three great beaches and the white cliffs of Culver Down on the doorstep, the village is a perfect base for exploring.” The delights of Bembridge were publicised further by TV chef James Martin in his recent show ‘Great British Adventure’. James visited the Isle of Wight and showed viewers how lucky we all are to live on an Island with such a wonderful climate, produce and lifestyle. How brilliant to see local Bembridge business highlighted amongst other Island producers. The show (episode 17) is on the ITV hub for anyone that missed it. I was privileged to recommend Dr Desmond Murphy to receive the Freedom of the Isle of Wight. Dr Murphy played a leading role in founding and developing Mountbatten Hospice, formerly known as Earl Mountbatten House and latterly as Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Mountbatten is part of the DNA of the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight Council (IWC) held an extraordinary full council meeting on 13th March and conferred the honour for Dr Murphy’s dedication to improving end of life care for Island residents. Dr Murphy, Consultant Respiratory Physician was at the forefront of the creation and development of the hospice - and helped lead its expansion

into the much valued and praised facility that it is today. Nationally the Great British Spring Clean is being led by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and the aim is to have nationally half a million volunteers litter pick during this period. You can find the nearest event (or arrange your own litter pick) to you on the IWC website. The campaign, which runs from 22 March to 23 April, will not only see tonnes of litter being removed from the environment on our doorstep, it also aims to rescue thousands of the plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans that are simply thrown on the ground but could, very easily, be recycled. Using the ‘three bags full’ approach, volunteers will be asked to separate the litter they pick into three bags: one for plastic bottles; one for aluminium cans and a third for the rest of the rubbish. The Isle of Wight Council, in partnership with Amey, will then collect these bags to ensure that they are recycled appropriately. I would encourage as many people, organisations, including businesses, parish/ town councils, schools/colleges, cubs, scouts, brownies, churches and pubs to take part. Last year, the council’s waste service team supported several litter picks, in partnership with Amey, through the supply of litter bags, free litter pick waste collections and promotion of event. For further information about collections and how the council could support you, please contact media@iow.gov.uk continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill continued I continue to Chair the monthly IWC Community Plastic Environmental Forum which is well Qualified Practitioner attended with informative speakers including recently The Ellen McArthur Foundation. The Home visits available Forum is currently liaising with Planet Aware to link up with Ventnor Town Council for the Call Shan on inaugural water refill campaign following the 01983 406403 restoration of the old water fountain originally donated by the Temperance Society. The Forum has also enabled the Transition Island group OPEN FOR BUSINESS link up with Amey to discuss Black Soldier flies, with regards Deacons Nursery to food combustion and also to discuss planting edible plants in the flower beds outside County Hall.

Finally, on a subject close to my heart, I am very happy to announce that St. Helen’s Primary School where I am a governor is now a central collection point for recycling crisp packets and clothes. Feel free to take your unwanted items along. Future dates for your diary:

Have you seen that the IWC has signed up to Love Food Hate Waste’s new campaign ‘Compleating’? The main aim of the campaign is to eat the whole ingredient or food with no edible parts going to waste. Watch out for top tips, facts and advice that the IWC will be sharing over the next few weeks.

St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The renovation of the Duver Public Toilets is well underway (and hopefully completed by early April and certainly by Easter), and the contractors have worked to ensure minimal disruption, as well as add value to this much needed amenity. The project includes more durable fixtures, improvements to fittings, upgrades in the décor, external decoration and new doors, the re-introduction of a tap (hopefully part of the environmental re-fill initiative), and work on the surrounding area: after many years of noninvestment, the parish council, in response to local consultation, have prioritised funding for the future provision of this facility, and hope to add further improvements in due course. Parish Councillors have also discussed potential funding for mechanical cleaning of the beach, improved signage for beach users, as well as working with partner organisations and local businesses to develop other projects and initiatives. Councillors have worked with the National Trust to secure the renovation of the Poulton Stone (dedicated to members of the Poulton family – including former England Rugby Captain Ronald Poulton), as part of the Gaggen Path and a highlight of the Heritage Trail.

future initiatives. The Parish Council have helped establish a group that will meet regularly to discuss Duver issues and report back to the Council and the Parish. Work has also been undertaken to increase waste bin capacity along the Duver, as well as introduce dual use recycling bins – part of the ongoing commitment to environmentally beneficial initiatives within the resources of the Parish. The Parish has also taken forward discussions regarding the maintenance of the greens, with a service specification being produced and published – this is intended to clarify expectations and enable all stakeholders to be clear of responsibilities and standards of maintenance. Representation has also been made about proposed significant planning proposals within the Parish, meeting with appropriate officers to outline the concerns of the community, as well as the need to ensure investment in the local infrastructure for the benefit of current and future residents.

Uncertainty remains over the future of Station Road Toilets, and the Parish continues to seek clarification of the outcome of the consultation on the de-regulation of the site and what options may be available – like The Heritage Trail, supported by grant funding, the Duver toilets, there has been a lack of includes reference to the Fort, Church Green, investment in the amenity which requires Railway Station and Rail History, the iconic Rail significant funds to address, and members are very mindful of securing clarification in order Carriage Beach Huts, The Sophie Daws Blue Plaque, the Memorial Shelter, Town Map, and to make an informed decision if and when appropriate. other sites of historic interest. Work has also been undertaken to make safety improvements on National Trust land, introduce new dog bins and working on other

These items will be discussed at the April and May 2019 meetings, with Police Representation invited to the April meeting.

BEMBRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL

5 Foreland Road, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, PO35 5XN Tel: 01983 874160 Email: clerk@bembridgepc.org.uk

BEMBRIDGE WINS VILLAGE OF THE YEAR! We are delighted that Bembridge has won Village of the Year in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2019. Thank you to everyone who voted for Bembridge to win this prestigious title and huge congratulations to our neighbours in Sandown for winning the Beach of the Year category for Sandown Bay. 5-7 HIGH STREET UPDATE The Parish Council accepts that the sale of 5/7 High Street has attracted significant media attention and local interest lately. At the Extraordinary Council Meeting on 13th February the following public statement was resolved, which we hope will put an end to speculation regarding the sale of the building: “Bembridge Parish Council has found itself in an untenable position due to the threat of on-going legal challenges, therefore we have agreed to reject the increased offer for 5/7 High Street, rescind the decisions of 22nd January regarding the sale of 5/7 High Street and remove the building from the market pro tem.” BREAK-INS AT FORELANDS BEACH HUTS The Parish Council has received information from the Police that there have been a number of break-ins recently at the Forelands beach huts. The Police are advising residents to be mindful and to avoid keeping valuable items and property in the huts unattended. Thefts can be reported on the Police non-emergency 101 number. 10

BB3 FOOTPATH Our lengthsmen were incredibly busy in March, in particular with five days of hard labour at the start of the month repairing a 100-metre section of the BB3 footpath, where it joins with BB19. This is a well-used footpath and we are pleased these works are now complete. This was a joint project co-funded by the Isle of Wight Council. Well done to our lengthsmen for braving the inclement weather to finish the project in the allotted week.
