InStHelensonMondaythe8th ofMaywe joinedinwiththenationalBigHelpOut andnearlythirtyvolunteerscametogether togarden,tidy,weed,washandcarryout otheractivitiestosupportandenhancethe Village.Thesuccessofthiseventhas inspiredaproposaltomakethisanannual eventonforthcomingMayDayBank Holidays.Welookforwardtothe‘Spring TimeSpruceUp’onMay6th 2024!

Theresponsibilitytoremovesuchrests withtheIsleofWightCouncilwho‘own’ andmanagethebeach.Wehopesuch eventsdon’thappenagain,butifyoudo findsomethingthatneedstoberemoved fromthebeachforhealthsafetyreasonsit shouldbereportedtotheIsleofWight

Lastlytherehavebeenconcernsabouttrees beingcutdownandconsequentbonfiresin theVillage.Unfortunately,Tree PreservationOrderswerenotinplace,but theForestryCommissionhasotherrules andregulationsandtheyareactively investigatingifthesehavebeenbreached. Asfarasbonfiresareconcerned,contrary topopularbelief,therearenotmanyrules governingthese,buttheymayconstitutea ‘statutorynuisance’.Thisissomethingthat canbereportedtoanddealtwithbythe IsleofWightCouncilEnvironmental HealthDepartment.

JuneseesthemainemergenceofoneofourmostspectacularinsectsintheUK,theStag Beetle.Itgetsitsnameasthemale’simpressive-lookingmandibleslookliketheantlersofa stag.Theyareusedtoattractamateandtorepelanyrivalmaleswhichcanseethemlocked incombatbeforeoneofthembacksdown.
StagBeetlesarenationallyscarce,withmostrecordscomingfromsouthernEngland.Oneof thereasonsfortheirdeclineisourgeneraltendencyto'tidyup'deadorrottingwood,timber andgreenspaces.Asplacesforthemtoshelterarelostorbecomeisolated,fewersuitable habitatsforStagBeetlesexist.
Theyspendmostoftheirlifecycle undergroundasalarva.Thiscanbe anywherefromthreetoseven yearsdependingontheweather. Whatawonderfulweekendforthe Coronation. AllplansfortheBarnDanceontheGreen werechangedduetoinclementweather andtoowetunderfoot,sowasmovedto theCommunityCentre.Agreattimewas hadbyallwhoattended.
Sundaysawthesunandmanypeople bringingtheirlunchtoPicnicontheGreen. Somecamewiththeirowntablesand properlunch-othersapackedpicnic.With musicinthebackgroundaveryrelaxing timewasenjoyed.Agoodselectionof prizesintheraffle,theprofitshelpingfund someoftheweekendexpenses.TheSt HelensHistoricalSocietyheldan exhibitiongivingaglimpseintoStHelens past.
Monday-TheBigHelpOut-Over20 villagerscameouttohelpoutdespitethe weathernotbeingthebest.Clearedupand packedawayfromtheprevioustwodays. ThelocalPavilionhadaclean,weeds removed,brickpaversreset,‘Latimer Garden‘givenamakeover,litterpicking aroundthevillage,theshelterhavinga cleanandagainvegetationremoved.A continuoussupplyofrefreshments,teas, coffeesandhome-madecakes-allbythe wonderfulfolkwhoattended.An enormousthankyoutoallinvolved.

Therehasbeenalotinthelocalnews recentlyabouttheshiftingpoliticalsceneat CountyHall.Thereisalagtimeofjust overaweekbetweenwritingthisarticle andpublicationsothingsmayhave changedagainbutasIwrite,one ConservativeCouncillorand3Alliance haveresignedfromtheirrespective groupingsandcreatedanewgroupwhich theyhavecalled“EmpoweringIslanders.” AnotherAllianceCouncillorhasdefected totheLiberalDemocrats.Thisleavesthe Conservativesasthelargestgroupwith16 ofthe39Councillors,theAlliancewith13 whichincludes2Greens,Empowering Islanderswith4,theLiberalDemocrats with3andafurther3Councillorsnotina groupincludingonewhoisinprison.
AlthoughtheLeaderoftheCouncilisnow inaGroupwhichaccountsforonlyathird ofallCouncillorsandisthereforewell shortofamajority,shewillonlyleaveher positionifsheresignsorisremovedbya voteofnoconfidencebyamotionon noticenaminganalternativeLeader.Until suchtimeshecontinuesasLeaderandall theCabinetMemberswhoruntheCouncil areappointedbyher.TodatetheCabinet, haveallbeenAlliancemembers notwithstandingtheAlliancedidnotstand asapoliticalgroupingatthelastelection andtheyhaveneverhadamajorityonthe Council.

Havenstreetisbeingpublicisednationally asasuccessstorywithSouthernWater’s slow-releasewaterbuttschemeyetthere arenoplanstorollthisoutinBembridgeor RydeMonktonMeadanytimesoon.These weretwoofthethreeareasthatwerethe subjectofparticularlyseverefloodingin 2021andbothhaves19FloodReports.I

SouthernWateracceleratetherolloutof thewaterbuttschemetoBembridgeand comeforwardwithplanstoimplement recommendationsofthes19FloodReport. Iwillfollowthispublicmotionupin privatewithSouthernWaterandthe Council’sOfficers.
WitheachmonthlyreportIexpecttobein apositiontosaymoreaboutthestatusof theplanningapplicationfor67homeson thelandbetweenSteyneRoadandHillway Roadhowever,theapplicationdidnot comebeforethelastPlanningCommittee andIhavenotseenanyindicationthatit willcomebeforetheJuneCommittee meetingalbeittheagendahasnotbeen publishedatthetimeofwriting.Withthe changesofpoliticalgroupsontheCouncil theCouncillorswhositonthecommittee arelikelytoundergosomechangesand theremaywellbeanewChairwhohelps setthetimetable.
