JuneseesthemainemergenceofoneofourmostspectacularinsectsintheUK,theStag Beetle.Itgetsitsnameasthemale’simpressive-lookingmandibleslookliketheantlersofa stag.Theyareusedtoattractamateandtorepelanyrivalmaleswhichcanseethemlocked incombatbeforeoneofthembacksdown.

StagBeetlesarenationallyscarce,withmostrecordscomingfromsouthernEngland.Oneof thereasonsfortheirdeclineisourgeneraltendencyto'tidyup'deadorrottingwood,timber andgreenspaces.Asplacesforthemtoshelterarelostorbecomeisolated,fewersuitable habitatsforStagBeetlesexist.

Theyspendmostoftheirlifecycle undergroundasalarva.Thiscanbe anywherefromthreetoseven yearsdependingontheweather. TheIslandisagreatplacefortravellingontwowheelsandmyfoldinge-bikemakes cyclingapleasure.Myselfandmyhusbandeventakeourlittledogwithuswholikesto travelinstyleinhisownlittledogtrailerbeingtowedbymyhusband!!Honestly,he isn’tspoilt!

existingtarmacroadandit islikelythatthisnew surfacewillmirrorthetile slabsbeingusedaround theInterchangearea.Thereareplansto extendandimprovetheseatingand greeningbywayoftrees,shrubs,and plantsverymuchintegraltothescheme. IntalkswithSouthernWater,moreareas ofsoftdrainagewillbeprovidedinan efforttopreventwaterrunoffdownthe highstreetandintothedrainnetwork systemthusreducingpressureonthe systemandpotentialdischarges.

Andthefinalgrantfundingsuccesshas beenforAppleyTowerwherearound £400,000hasbeengiventocarryout renovationsandimprovementsoverthe comingyear.

Intotal,intoRydeasgrantfundinginthis pastyear,around£1.8mhasbeen awardedwhichwillmakeamarked differencetothetownandcommunity oncetheprojectsarecomplete.

Andwearenotstoppingthere.We constantlyresearchandapplyforgrant fundingandthenextprojectislikelytobe acompletelynewskateparkbuilt alongsidetheexistingoneclosetothe Marina.RydeTownCouncilareintalks withtheIsleofWightCouncilabout acquiringenoughlandtobeabletobuild anOlympicsizeandstandardskatepark andpreparingagrantfundingbidforup to£500,000toconstructthisbrilliantasset forouryouthandothersinthe communityofRyde.Further announcementsaredueshortlyandIam hopingthiscanbeaddedtothe achievementsalreadymadeinRydethis pastyearorso.

TherearelotsofthingsbuzzinginRyde alongwiththebeesinthebloomingarray ofRydeflowers.Rydehasapacked programmeofeventssuchasMardiGras, ArmedForcesDay,RydeCarnivals,IW Pride,ClassicCars,ScooterRally,Beach SportsFestival,SouthIslandSevensand muchmore.Althoughcertainbusinesses haveclosedsuchasthreebanksinthe Town,newbusinessesarepoppingupall thetime.Anewartgalleryhasjustopened onUnionStreet.RydeBusinessAssociation hashadachangeofpersonnelandthereis anexcitinggroupoflocalbusinessowners puttingenergyandvitalisationintheTown. BuildingworkhasstartedonSt.Thomas’s ChurchforittobecomeRydeyouthand communitycentre.

Iwasdevastatedtohearaboutthesad deathofVicGalluci.Vicwasthefounder andorganiserofRydeandIWClassicCar Extravaganza.Hewasaretiredactorand closelyassociatedwithTV’sTheBilland hadmanypartsonTVandfilmsincluding beingaleadStormtrooperinthefirstStar WarsTrilogy.Vic’sreallovewashisannual IsleofWightclassiccarextravaganzahe hasbeenrunningeverySeptemberforthe lasttwodecades.Hekneweveryoneinthe classiccarworldandwasdeterminedto maketheannualeventthetopeventinthe UK.Ihadweeklycontactwithhimeven theweekbeforehissaddeath.RydeTown CouncilandIarecommittedtomakesure theeventnotonlycontinuesin2023butit isrebrandedastheVictorGalluci’sIW classiccarextravaganza!.Heraised£1000s annuallyforlocalcharitiesandwillbevery sadlymissed;ashesaidthe“showmustgo on”andRydewillseetheeventcontinue.

WestAcrePark–Residents nowseekJudicialReview!

Onthe24th April2023,IW PlanningCommitteemetand approvedagaintheplanningapplicationto build470housesonWestridgeFarmsitein myward,RydeAppleyandElmfield.The votewas6forapprovaland5against.Again thiswasacontroversialdecisionandclear errorsofprocessweremade.Onthe4th May, therewasaresidents’meetingandresidents votedunanimouslytocontinuewiththeir crowdfundedcampaigntobringthiscasein frontofajudgeandseekjudicialreview.

RydeCommunityDevelopmentTrustto supportlocalinitiatives!

TheRydeCommunityDevelopmentTrust wasfullylaunchedonMay13th 2023ata RydecelebratoryMayor’sGaladinnerat RydeSchool.Ihaverecentlybeenelectedas ChairoftheTrust.Thecharitabletrusthas beenestablishedtosupportcommunity-led localinitiativesthatimproveopportunities forallRyderesidents.Thefirstplanned projectsincludeaccessibilityforallonIsland beaches,anOlympicstandardBMX/ Skateboard/andScooterParkonthe Esplanade,a“WorldisMyOyster”travel acrosstheSolentprogrammefortalented youngpeopletoaccesscompetitions/training

IhavenowstooddownasMayorandCllr RichardMay(representsRydeWest)has beenelectedasMayor.Richardwasthe HeadmasterofGreenmountPrimarySchool fornearly30yearsandwillmakean excellentMayor.CllrJennaSabinealsostood downafter2yearsasDeputyMayor.Jo Elliott(representsRydeSouth-East)was electedDeputyMayor.JolivesinOakfield andworksfortheUniversityofPortsmouth.
