StagBeetlesarenationallyscarce,withmostrecordscomingfromsouthernEngland.Oneof thereasonsfortheirdeclineisourgeneraltendencyto'tidyup'deadorrottingwood,timber andgreenspaces.Asplacesforthemtoshelterarelostorbecomeisolated,fewersuitable habitatsforStagBeetlesexist.
Theyspendmostoftheirlifecycle undergroundasalarva.Thiscanbe anywherefromthreetoseven yearsdependingontheweather. Thelastyearhasseensomeextraordinary grantfundingcomeintoRydeandweare goingtoseethebenefitsofthatinthe comingmonthsandyearastheprojects theywillassistcometofruition.The successfulbidfortheStThomas’schurch projectwasawardedjustrecentlyandwill seealmost£600,000beinvestedinthe Rydeyouthservicewhichwillberunfrom thechurchbuildingonceadaptedand upgradedtosuittheneedsoftheyoung peopleusingit.Currently,thestainedglasswindowsarebeingremovedtobe repairedandworkisstartingshortlyon internalmodificationswhichwillinclude heating,lightingandsoundsystems,a cinematypeprojectorsystem,newtoilets andwashfacilitiesandanewpurpose-built kitchen/caféfacility.Inadditiontothe worktomodifyandimprovethefacilities insidethebuilding,moreequipmentsuch aspooltablesandtabletenniswillbe providedalongsidenewandextended computerequipmenttobeinstalledbefore theyouthservicemoveintothebuilding. existingtarmacroadandit islikelythatthisnew surfacewillmirrorthetile slabsbeingusedaround theInterchangearea.Thereareplansto extendandimprovetheseatingand greeningbywayoftrees,shrubs,and plantsverymuchintegraltothescheme. IntalkswithSouthernWater,moreareas ofsoftdrainagewillbeprovidedinan efforttopreventwaterrunoffdownthe highstreetandintothedrainnetwork systemthusreducingpressureonthe systemandpotentialdischarges.
Andthefinalgrantfundingsuccesshas beenforAppleyTowerwherearound £400,000hasbeengiventocarryout renovationsandimprovementsoverthe comingyear.
Intotal,intoRydeasgrantfundinginthis pastyear,around£1.8mhasbeen awardedwhichwillmakeamarked differencetothetownandcommunity oncetheprojectsarecomplete.
Andwearenotstoppingthere.We constantlyresearchandapplyforgrant fundingandthenextprojectislikelytobe acompletelynewskateparkbuilt alongsidetheexistingoneclosetothe Marina.RydeTownCouncilareintalks withtheIsleofWightCouncilabout acquiringenoughlandtobeabletobuild anOlympicsizeandstandardskatepark andpreparingagrantfundingbidforup to£500,000toconstructthisbrilliantasset forouryouthandothersinthe communityofRyde.Further announcementsaredueshortlyandIam hopingthiscanbeaddedtothe achievementsalreadymadeinRydethis pastyearorso.
