JuneseesthemainemergenceofoneofourmostspectacularinsectsintheUK,theStag Beetle.Itgetsitsnameasthemale’simpressive-lookingmandibleslookliketheantlersofa stag.Theyareusedtoattractamateandtorepelanyrivalmaleswhichcanseethemlocked incombatbeforeoneofthembacksdown.

StagBeetlesarenationallyscarce,withmostrecordscomingfromsouthernEngland.Oneof thereasonsfortheirdeclineisourgeneraltendencyto'tidyup'deadorrottingwood,timber andgreenspaces.Asplacesforthemtoshelterarelostorbecomeisolated,fewersuitable habitatsforStagBeetlesexist.

Theyspendmostoftheirlifecycle undergroundasalarva.Thiscanbe anywherefromthreetoseven yearsdependingontheweather. I’vepreviouslymentionedinotherissues howIliketogetoutandexplorethe islandonmybicycle,enjoyingregular stopsatlocaltearoomsandonother daystakingapicnicwithmetoenjoy eitherinthecountryside,oneofthe manyparksordownontheseafront.TheIslandisagreatplacefortravellingontwo wheelsandmyfoldinge-bikemakescyclingapleasure.Myselfandmyhusbandeven takeourlittledogwithuswholikestotravelinstyleinhisownlittledogtrailerbeing towedbymyhusband!!Honestly,heisn’tspoilt!

JuneisalsothemonthoftheIsleofWightFestivalandifyouaregoing,Ihopeyou haveagreattimeandenjoythemusicandatmosphere–obviouslynoteveryoneenjoys thefestivalperiodespeciallytheextratrafficbutit’sonlyforacoupleofdaysandifyou havetogoouttryandplaninadvancesoyoumissthe‘extrabusy’times.

Weactuallygottheawardanditsassociatedtrophyoverayearago,butwe’veonlyjust receivedourpersonalawards.

TheIWCBP providesthree routes,the22,24 and32.Allthe busesaredrivenby volunteers,hence theaward.

AnewWCfacilityblockhasbeeninstalled byShanklinTownCounciladjacenttothe CliffLiftexitbytheSpaCarPark.The facilityincludestwotoilets,oneaccessible andoneunisex.Italsohasfreetouse showersforthosecomingoffthebeachand wishingtoremovesandandsaltbefore leavingthearea.Thepay-as-you-usefacility hasalreadyseensignificantfootfallintothe buildingsinceitscompletionafewweeks ago.CCTVandanewdirectionsignfrom theesplanadewillbeinstalledinduecourse. TheTownCouncilhasalsocommissioneda fullstructuralsurveyoftheArtDecoWC blockatChineBluffnearbytothe Fisherman'sCottage.Thesurveyhasnow beencompleted,andalthoughthebuilding requiressignificantworktobecarriedouton itsroofandinternally,thegoodnewsisthat thebuildingisstructurallysound.TheTown Councilwillbeconsideringthefutureofthe buildingatforthcomingmeetings.

Irecentlyattendedabriefingfromthe organisersoftheSandownSprintwithnews ofsomeproposedchangesfor2024.As Easterfallsearly,inMarch,nextyear,the eventwilltakeplaceinAprilandit’shoped thattherewillbemorelocalbusinessesopen asmanycafeswerestillclosedinMarch. AnotherproposedchangeisthatFortStreet carparkisusedasthebaseforthedrivers andtheircrewinsteadofYaverlandCar park.It'shopedthatthiswillalsobringthe eventatmosphereintothetownandbenefit localbusinessesbybothspectatorsand competitorscomingintotown.
