StagBeetlesarenationallyscarce,withmostrecordscomingfromsouthernEngland.Oneof thereasonsfortheirdeclineisourgeneraltendencyto'tidyup'deadorrottingwood,timber andgreenspaces.Asplacesforthemtoshelterarelostorbecomeisolated,fewersuitable habitatsforStagBeetlesexist.
Theyspendmostoftheirlifecycle undergroundasalarva.Thiscanbe anywherefromthreetoseven yearsdependingontheweather. Irecentlyattendedabriefingfromthe organisersoftheSandownSprintwithnews ofsomeproposedchangesfor2024.As Easterfallsearly,inMarch,nextyear,the eventwilltakeplaceinAprilandit’shoped thattherewillbemorelocalbusinessesopen asmanycafeswerestillclosedinMarch. AnotherproposedchangeisthatFortStreet carparkisusedasthebaseforthedrivers andtheircrewinsteadofYaverlandCar park.It'shopedthatthiswillalsobringthe eventatmosphereintothetownandbenefit localbusinessesbybothspectatorsand competitorscomingintotown.
