AlthoughtherewerenoelectionsontheIsle ofWight,therehasstillbeenashiftinthe council’smake-upsincelastmonth.This hasbeenintermsofthegroupsrepresented.
InearlyMay,aConservativeresignedfrom hisgroup.AfewdayslaterCllrMichael LilleyoftheAlliancegroupjoinedmy group,theLiberalDemocrats.Theformer Conservativethenjoinedwiththree councillorsfromtheAlliancegrouptoform anewgroup!
Since2021’selectionsnogrouphashadan overallmajorityonthecouncil,andthese changesreinforcethat.AlongwithmyLib Demcolleagues,Ihavestressedthatwecan workwithanyoneforthegoodofIslanders andtheIsleofWightparticularlywhenthat isinlinewithourliberalvalues.Our prioritiesremaintacklingpoverty,gettinga supplyofhousingthatistrulyaffordableto rentandbuy,togetgreeneconomic development,andtoprotectandenhance theIsland’senvironment.
LastmonthIreportedthatakeydatewas comingupregardingadecisiononthedraft IslandPlanningStrategybyIsleofWight councillors.However,althoughthecouncil’s ForwardPlanindicatedadecisionwastobe takenbythefullcouncil,thatwas subsequentlywithdrawn.Thecouncil’s Cabinetinsteadresolved,ineffect,towait forfurtherinformationfromthecentral governmentonchangesitproposesto nationalplanningguidance.

Floodinghasbeenahottopicthesepast fewmonthsandrightlyso.DuringanIWC scrutinymeetinglastmonth,Isecured agreementfromthecommitteetorequest informalmeetingsbetweenthecouncil, SouthernWaterandtheEnvironment Agency.Ihopethatthecouncilcanhelp facilitateconstructivecommunication betweenthetwoparties,inaneffortto tacklethestormoverflowissueswe’re havingintheareaandthewiderIsland. Thiswasinadditiontothecommittee recommendingthecouncilrequests SouthernWaterspeedsuptherolloutofits slow-drainwaterbuttschemeandthe councilalsoadoptsaDesignCodeto supplementplanningguidance,which wouldrequiretrulysustainabledrainagefor allnewbuilds.
InadditiontothisI’vebeenworkingwith thecounciltounderstandwhatflood preventionsolutionsarebeingconsidered forourareaandalsoinvolvingresidents withvariousexpertisetoensurethat valuablelocalknowledgeisinputtedinto anydecisionmaking.
AtthetimeofwritingthisIhadreceived nocommunicationfromresidents regardingThompsonHousesincethe demolitionstarted,whichwouldindicate thattheprocessisrunningsmoothlyand sensitively.However,ifyoudohave concernspleasedogetintouchandIcan followthemupwiththecounciland relevantcontractors.
I’mchasinganumberofhistoricalandnew enforcementissueswithregardstomatters attheWhitecroftParkestate.Oneofthe immediateissuesisthesafetyofthe scaffoldingandnettingsurroundingthe chimneyasresidentshavepreviously
reportedfallingdebris.I’m alsoincommunicationwith themanagingagenttoexploresome potentialandamicableresolutionsfor residentsgoingforward.
