Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time. Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come. Easter is just around the corner and there are many Easter themed events happening across the Island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section can be found on pages 12 and 13. Please note with the ongoing issues around Coronavirus some of the listed events may be subject to change.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk Well what weather we have endured as of late, hopefully with the clocks changing at the end of March we can enjoy lighter nights and more time to explore our lovely Island. That is of course Coronavirus permitting... at the time of writing the UK and worldwide situation was in decline on a daily basis, but there is plenty of preventative advice available. Stay safe and of course, we must keep up that regular hand washing. On a brighter note... Proof that Bembridge is the best village Of course, we always knew this to be true and indeed, over the last few years Bembridge been at the forefront of winning awards; having been voted Village of The Year (UK) by Countryfile viewers/readers in 2019 and Village of The Year twice for Hampshire & Isle of Wight. I can personally vouch that Woodford’s Butchers has some very tasty food, especially the sausage rolls which the television chef James Martin included on his show having enjoyed on his visit last year. We are very lucky to have so many good eateries and shops within one village, all with excellent reputations across the Island and with visitors. The latest award has been made to ‘The Olde Village Inn’ which has just been voted ‘Best Pub of the Year’ at the 2020 Isle of Wight Radio Best in Business Awards. 4

Well done to everyone who helps makes Bembridge a great place to live and visit. Island Deal Some members of the Isle of Wight Council Cabinet, led by the leader, Dave Stewart, recently met the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and other senior government ministers, including Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Alok Sharma, Business Secretary and Chris Pincher, Housing Minister. The discussions included the Prime Minister confirming his commitment to an Island Deal for the Isle of Wight. It is up to this administration to keep the pressure on Westminster to treat the Island as a special case; we are all aware that our island status does increase the costs of supporting all the residents so let’s watch this space for further updates. Among other issues discussed with the Prime Minister was the housing policy. We need to make sure that the Government realises that the Isle of Wight is looking at providing the right homes, in the right places, at affordable prices, for key workers and utilising brown field sites. FREE Mind the Gap Courses Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and their ‘Mind the Gap’ courses are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and will help you to move forward with rebuilt feelings of self-worth, self-esteem and confidence in yourself. The sessions help build support networks, learn new skills and increase self-belief. These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. If you are being, or have been, subjected to domestic abuse - emotional, psychological, financial, physical, sexual etc. then take the first step and get in contact via hello@breakthecycle.org.uk or by calling 754666. Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We “An excellent team are in a better position offering an now too, as we open invaluable service” directly on to the main NEW! You can still find the Friends serving refreshments at the Keyhole CT Laidlaw Day Hospital Surgery Scans and now at their new Watergate Rd, Newport, PO30 1XP 01983 212999 location. You will find their usual good coffee or tea, sandwiches, toasted teacakes, a variety of snacks and newspapers. And of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre. 9

St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council have kept the precept at the same level for this year, as in 2019-20, following prudent financial management, which has allowed for a further investment in Duver toilets before Easter – the toilets are now formally owned by the Parish Council. Improvements will include baby changing facilities, a deep clean and work on the drains, as well as replacement of tiles and other fixtures & fittings – this reflects an ongoing commitment to maintain the standard of the amenity as best as possible within the resources available. Extensive work has been undertaken to highlight concerns about the protection of the Greens, with the reporting of incidents high on the actions list of the Parish – the increase in size of motor vehicles, home delivery vehicles, and inconsiderate driving and parking have all exacerbated the problem – Councillors are working with partner agencies on a series of options which can be costed and considered in the future. There is also consideration of a Commons Council, but this would take some time to develop, and would require considerable support – and will be discussed at future meetings. Planning remains a concern, both in terms of individual applications on which members comment, reflecting local views and concerns as appropriate; and the wider issue of the draft Island Plan and 10

the number and type of housing proposed. The Parish has actively campaigned for realistic targets, and recognition of providing accommodation for local people, alongside the impact on the infrastructure and the economy. Investment in the Duver (including recycling bins, review of Dogs on Leads, maintenance of Church Green, and Public Realm improvements, as well as Public Toilets), with sponsorship and other support, has enabled the Parish to take forward an application for the Seaside Award – considerable work has been undertaken on this project and progress will be reported in future magazines and in Parish Meetings. The Council has also worked with the local school to enable a student to present a special VE Day @75 Mug to Prince Edward during his recent visit to the Island – students are also working on other projects to commemorate and celebrate the Anniversary, with VE Day falling on Friday May 8th 2020 – this year a Bank Holiday. Work continues on Station Road issues, with the recent installation of a drain helping alleviate a long term issue with surface water: work with the IW Council and Island Roads is hoped to further address the issues, as well as clear the pavement and bus shelter area. Councillors will continue to monitor the situation, and take appropriate action, if required. continued over the page

St Helens Parish Council The Council continues to monitor the changes in local healthcare provision following the closure of the Brading practice, and have highlighted local concerns – members recognise the need to maintain the provision in the village and how vital the service is to the local community. Councillors have also worked with the National Trust to arrange a presentation meeting, in the Community Centre, with a provisional date of Tuesday April 7th in the evening – details are being finalised and will be on the public notice board and website once agreed. Members again wish to thank residents for getting in touch, raising issues, and the support for projects being developed and delivered. Thank you again and best wishes for Easter
