Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. The year is slowly moving ahead and at the time of writing this we are following a Government roadmap which will gradually bring us out of ‘lockdown’ and let’s hope in the months to come we can start seeing a return to normal life pre-covid. Easter is early this year with Good Friday on the second of April and Easter Sunday on the fourth. I hope we are lucky weather wise and have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors accompanied with a good dose of sunshine. It might even be a chance for either the first picnic or barbecue of the year. This is also a great time to relax and get stuck into our puzzle section on pages 14 and 15.

Chocolate Chip Cookies You can’t beat a homemade chocolate chip cookie and the great thing with this easy recipe is you can adapt it to include fruits, nuts and your favourite sweets. Ingredients • 250g butter, softened • 350g light soft brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 350g self-raising flour • 100g cocoa powder • 200g chocolate chips or chopped chocolate chunks, or 400g for optional dipping Method STEP 1 Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs one at a time. Sift the flour and cocoa powder and beat into the butter mix, then fold through the chocolate chips. STEP 2 Line two backing sheets with parchment paper and evenly place a spoonful of the mixture. Bake for 12-15 mins until spread out and crusty around the outside. Leave to cool slightly and enjoy warm, or leave to cool completely and eat cold. The biscuits will keep in a tin for three days. STEP 3 As an optional extra, the biscuits can be dipped in chocolate. To do this, melt your chosen type of chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave. Leave to cool a little, then dip half of each biscuit in the chocolate and leave them on parchment paper lined trays somewhere THIS SIZE ADVERT cool to set.

Waste of Space Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch public appeal to help turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. Natural and wild places have provided a lifeline for people across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire over the past year, providing essential outside space to relax, exercise, play and spend time with friends and family. Access to these wild spaces and connection to nature is known to benefit people’s physical and mental health, leading to reductions in depression, anxiety and obesity and strengthening people’s immune systems. However, the pandemic has highlighted vast inequalities in access to green and natural spaces. One in eight households have no garden and rely entirely on public open spaces, particularly in urban areas. In a survey conducted by the Trust in June 2020, over 96% of people said that nature played an important role in relieving stress during lockdown and expressed a need for more natural space in our towns and cities. Urban wild spaces create healthier communities, reduce loneliness and social isolation and provide safe places for children to play. They also provide cleaner air, combat climate change, help reduce flooding and act as havens for wildlife as part of a county-wide Nature Recovery Network. The Trust is asking local people to map the ‘wasted space’ in their communities, the unloved scraps of land around our houses and streets that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. This could include tall buildings with the potential to have swift boxes on, paved over surfaces which could be filled with colourful planters or simply a space which needs a litter pick and a place to sit to transform it. The Trust want local people to help find creative ways to make space for nature within our towns and cities. Debbie Tann, CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “Wildlife has been squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces just at the time when people need nature more than ever for their health and wellbeing. Our Wilder 2030 campaign is calling for 30% of land and sea to be restored for nature by 2030, and for people to join us in taking action for wildlife. This must be the decade of nature’s recovery and rewilding our lives. Any area, no matter how small, will contribute to a Nature Recovery Network, and help rewild where we live. This will help transform towns and cities into places where wildlife can thrive and people are happier and healthier.” “Our Wilder Communities Officers, will provide support and advice, including how to talk to your local council, ways to identify what wildlife might already be living in your community, and how to make a space that benefits people and wildlife. We’ll also be engaging with local councils and landowners to get their support so they can work together with communities to make changes which create better urban spaces for everyone.” Together we can rewild where we live. St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk Dear Resident St Helens Parish Council continue to thank businesses and residents for their ongoing observance of the new Covid 19 guidance and hope the work of the community will enable a safe relaxation of the guidance, with local residents being able to get back to as normal a routine as possible. We have highlighted the programme of vaccinations being rolled out from the local medical centre, as well as nearby at Westridge, and thank all involved for making this possible – the contribution of volunteers has been greatly appreciated. Support for vulnerable and shielding residents has continued, and the Parish Council are in discussion with Aspire on possible projects that build on the work of previous months, as well as identifying the potential of any other initiatives. The Parish Council have allocated funds to continue the investment made in the Duver Toilets, and also allocated resources for the maintenance of the greens – the protection of the greens is something the Parish prioritises, and we hope to bring forward projects, like the investment we made in drainage by the Bus Stop on Station Road, in the future. We have received grant funding to complete the Heritage Project and have been contacted with details of Royal Visits to the Parish, as well as some of the historic features from the past, such as the 12

Railway, Pebble House, and how the Green used to look – thanks to the Historic Society and local residents for their ongoing help. Members of the Parish Council have been very active commenting on planning issues of concern to the Parish, including over Guildford Road and Field Lane (applications that may not be current, but representations are still being made to highlight issues of relevance to any future considerations); and members have worked with our neighbours in Nettlestone and Seaview over a possible development in Eddington Road – which would impact on this area. We are also mindful of the forthcoming local (County and Parish, as well as Police & Crime Commissioner) elections, with the Polling Station at the Community Centre – we appreciate the work of volunteers at the Centre to ensure the venue is Covid compliant and ready for May: The Isle of Wight Council will be publishing details nearer the time, and the Parish Council will be arranging an appropriate meeting after the elections have been held. Thanks to all the local residents that have been in touch regarding issues in the Parish, and for understanding the limitations, particularly during the pandemic, and for the efforts to address issues directly or after contacting the appropriate agencies. We hope this keeps residents as informed as possible at this time and hope all take care and stay safe.
