St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The recent meeting of the Parish Council saw Councillors discuss the proposed development at Guildford Park, and restate the objections made when the original proposal was submitted, and the Parish convened an extra-ordinary meeting for residents in August 2018. Members noted the IW Council Planning Committee had recommended refusal of the application on the grounds of highway and other issues – whilst supporting the recommendation, members were also concerned about other related matters and would raise them at the meeting. The Parish Council also noted the progress made with the Heritage Trail, involving the local school and historical association, and the initial trail covers the Blue Plaque (Sophie Dawes), Unique Pebble Cottage, site of old school, Sir Harry Baldwin’s Allotments (and Castle), the Gaggen Path, Poulton Stone, Old Golf Course, Old Church, Pill Boxes, Palmerston’s Fort, Mill Wall and Old Mill, Old Railway Station, and the History of the Green. Work is also in hand to produce a postcard of the Old Church, and details of the Commonwealth War Graves at the Parish Church – all funded from the grant secured by the Parish earlier in the year. Following continuing support from residents, plans are in hand to install a defibrillator at the public convenience at the Duver – for the benefit and safety of residents and visitors – utilising resources identified by the Parish Council. 44

The Duver project is developing, already regular mechanical beach cleaning is being undertaken, alongside larger recycling rubbish bins – the project will look at options for the Old Church Green for 2020, working with partners and the local school. The Parish also have helped fund the forthcoming carnival, following the success of the Fayre, and are working with colleagues on ideas for VE Day 2020. Meetings have also been planned regarding the future of Station Road toilets, with options coming to the September Meeting, and much is dependent on the decision of Defra regarding IW Council’s proposal to deregulate part of the Green. Members also discussed the proposed roadworks (Friday 9th August for 1-3 Days) for the entire length of Vine Road – as well as representations to have kerbing to protect the Green (members are also considering use of boulders on corners, and as part of the meadow areas, which residents have commented favourably on). The next meeting of the Parish Council is on Monday 9th September 2019, when options for the future of Station Road toilets will be considered. St Helens Parish Council would like to thank residents for their support and comments over recent months, and hope they have a safe and enjoyable summer. Best regards St Helens Parish Council

Beach Clean The next beach clean will be on Saturday 3rd August starting at either The Point or Lane End Road. If you wish to start at another location you can call into the Parish Office in the week prior to the clean to collect bags, gloves and litter pickers. Campaign for our Community – Bob Seely MP Bob Seely MP held a question and answer session in the Village Hall on Friday 21st May which was attended by 112 residents. The Island Plan outlines housing targets as well as other key development plans for the Island for the next decade. It is an important document that will shape our future. The plan demands some 9,000 extra houses. Bob opposes this Governmentimposed target for several reasons. In brief, concerns are: • This housing is not being built for Islanders and will be unaffordable for most Islanders. It is purely designed to hit national targets • It is not deliverable due to the lack of Island building capacity and we do not have the infrastructure to cope • Large-scale housebuilding will damage our landscape, quality of life and the Island’s tourism and visitor economy • By accepting targets we cannot fulfil, the Council leaves itself vulnerable to developers to force greenfield development • There is no public support amongst Islanders for large-scale house-building which is not for Islanders 8

For more information on his campaign and to sign the petition to stop the proposed Isle of Wight Council’s Island Planning Strategy Development Plan, go to www. islandvision.uk/islandplan. Village Parking You may have noticed that Parking Enforcement have been making a regular appearance in recent weeks. This is in response to residents and businesses expressing concerns over parking contraventions in and around the village (how many times have you seen the bus stuck on the corner unable to pass due to badly parked vehicles)? It is important to both residents and businesses that all vehicles are parked in the correct places and for the duration stipulated (restricted areas) this way visitors and residents are able to park more easily and businesses in turn will hopefully benefit. A fair few tickets have been issued, and they will maintain their visibility for the foreseeable future. Thank you to all motorists for your co-operation. Upcoming Events Bembridge Harbour Family Fun Weekend – 2-4th August 5 mile BYCC Trail Run – Sunday 4th August, www.evententry.co.uk/bembridge-trail-5 Parish Council Meetings & Events Planning Committee – 13th August, 6pm – Village Hall

Boom Boom!! This month’s front cover certainly shows the trust that can develop between wildlife and a photographer. Whilst relaxing and basking in the sunshine this beautiful creature was happy to be digitally captured by David Cramp. David is a ‘hobby photographer’ but started out in his school days as an artist, drawing and painting subjects that caught his eye and on occasions a bit of photography with a box camera. He then moved on to a different type of art and made a career as an antique restorer/french polisher but when digital cameras first appeared on the scene his interest in photography returned and has now become an extension of his art. What David would have previously painted he can now capture with his camera. His images are for his own personal use but are gaining plenty of attention when shared via social media. David says “there is no way in the world I could take photos to order – the subject has to be something that just catches my eye” and I am sure everyone will agree that this picture really does catch the eye.
