Hello and welcome to the August issue of Island Magazines. It’s hard to believe that over half the year has passed already and I think 2020 is ertainly going to be a year no one will ever forget! I would like to thank everyone that got in touch to comment how nice it was to see us back in print. Your kind words mean a lot and thank you for supporting your local community magazine. Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 6 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 2. This month we have included a rather unusual recipe. Some of you will already be avid fans but some many never of heard of it - check out page 12 and let us know what you think. The easing of more lockdown restrictions has begun and it is down to us all to play our part in ensuring the virus does not spread. As always please take care and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk Councillor Michael Murwill @cllormururwill Bembridge New Electric Point The new charging point for electric cars, arranged by the Parish Council, is now up and running in Foreland Road. I have received very positive feedback from residents and visitors. This is another step forward and hopefully we shall see more points in every village and town. Tour of Britain 2022 It is excellent news that it has been announced that the Isle of Wight has been chosen to host the final leg of the Tour of Britain in 2022. The road cycling race starts in Aberdeen and will finish on the Island, with a worldwide TV audience of millions from around 150 countries, looking at the Island, as well as thousands visiting the Island for the event. The Island is renowned around the world for its sailing, staging the finale of the Tour of Britain will hopefully be the start of bringing the Island to the forefront of world road cycling. This is another opportunity for the Island to be a leading light in Britain and the world and show businesses and possible future residents and visitors that it is a great place to live, visit and work. The Tour of Britain can be a window for the Island to promote itself and encourage businesses to set up here.
MRW National Recycling Awards 2020. The first nomination is for the ‘Campaign of the Year - Up to £20K’: This relates to the excellent communications campaign to improve recycling at holiday lets across the Island. The second shortlisted category is for ‘Public/Private sector category for Partnership Excellence’: This is as of a result for a project delivered in 2019 for the Island by IWC and Amey. The object of the project was to build the first ‘twin stream’ Mechanical Treatment plant in the UK. As a result of the plant, the Island is now enabled to process dry mixed recycling (such as paper and card), food waste and enables dirty recycling to be extracted from the black bin waste that has been incorrectly disposed of. This is a massive step in improving our recycling rates and move the Island even further up the league table of local authorities (LA’s) for recycling (last year the IWC was 51st out of 345 LA’s). Both categories are a recognition of the hard work of Island residents in recycling waste and the work done by the council officers and Amey. I hope that you continue to keep safe and healthy.

St Helens Parish Council Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council would like to thank residents for their continued observance of the guidance that has been provided during the pandemic, also for their support of the community via the helpline service provided by the Isle of Wight Council Hub (phone 823600), and Community Action website. Volunteers in St Helens, via the local network, have supported vulnerable residents with provision of Shopping, collection and delivery of medications, as well as other support, at a time of need – at the same time information has been provided for other support that is available to local businesses and voluntary organisations this advice has resulted in Government Grants being received by some local organisations. The Parish Council are continuing to monitor and review the situation, maintaining services where it is safe to do so – and have worked with partner organisations and agencies, following the guidance, and ensuring services are maintained where possible. Discussions have been had to continue the maintenance of the public spaces, the Green, and the safety of all involved being the priority – Councillors appreciate the value of Public Spaces at this time, both for exercise and for the environment, and have made budgetary provision to continue this service. Work, within the guidance, has also been undertaken to prepare the Parish owned 8
toilets at the Duver, they are now fully re-opened and include new baby changing facilities, as well as continuing the provision of existing amenities, such as outside tap, dog lead facility, defibrillator and seasonally increased cleaning. Members will continue to monitor and review the situation as guidance evolves, and will work with other local stakeholders to take appropriate action when required – many of the plans for 2020 have had to be delayed due to the pandemic, and the Council appreciate the support and understanding of the community during this time. The application for the nationally prestigious Seaside Award was successful, and the Council appreciate the support of local businesses - it has been very difficult for local businesses at this time and the Seaside Award is recognition of the collective efforts of all involved. Hand litter picking on the beach is continuing and in line with other Councils on the Island, the Parish Council is also mechanical cleaning our beach during the season. The provision of larger recycling waste bins, in 2019 has continued and these are emptied daily with additional collections when required – users of the Duver, and other amenities, are requested to take litter home with them when the bins provided are full, it would be helpful if litter is not placed by the side of bins, as this results in the wildlife scattering it over the continued over the page

Initial work has started regarding VJ Day 75 in August 2020, following the design of a commemorative VE Day 75 by the local primary school. Further work has been undertaken in Station Road, near to the Bus Shelter, which follows the investment of the Parish Council in additional drainage to help address the issue of surface water – the Council have campaigned for this work for some time, and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the remedial work.

Resident concerns regarding incidents of anti-social behaviour have been reported to the appropriate authorities, and members are continuing to monitor areas of concern. The Parish Council are continuing to follow guidance on meetings, working with the Community Centre to plan for future meetings, when possible, and ensure community engagement – a presentation by the National Trust has been postponed due to the current situation but will be re-scheduled for later in the year if possible. Members again wish to thank residents for getting in touch, raising issues, and the support for projects being developed and delivered. Sadly, we must also report the passing away of former Parish Councillor Carole Parker, and Councillor Mike Anderson, both served the community extensively over many years, and our thoughts are with their respective families at this time. Thank you again, take care and stay safe. St Helens Parish Council

Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper
Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife.

Just like a baby sitter, except I care for your animals and home, when you need a break/holiday, business trip or respite. I stay in your house, keep your pets happy, healthy and stimulated, clean up after your pets and myself, leave your home clean and odour free. I’ll look after 2, 3 and 4 legged pets, but no Arachnids or Venomous Snakes . “Do you provide dog walking services?” Yes, if it is part of the house sit, (long stay) Day sit or Doggy Day Care, but not as a stand alone service. “ How much do you charge for your services?” It depends on what type of service you want, what breed/animal or pet you’d like us to care for. It’s best to arrange a ‘Meet & Greet’ appointment so we can discuss your requirements, routines and then agree a fee. You can view our price list on the main website. For ‘First time’ bookings, I’m happy to negotiate especially for longer stays/ bookings. “Do you have any experience with horses?” Yes ... My husband is the equine expert. ‘Horse whisperer’- He has an inner calm, a quietness that horses love. He’s an experienced driver and eventer. Me... I have
some experience and basic knowledge of care and can turn in/out your horse, feed, water, pick feet and muck out pens and I can ride. Please call me if you would like to meet ‘Mr Whisper’. “Why are you providing/promoting this service on the Island, when you don’t live here?” When I first came to the Island in May 2017, to dog & house sit for a client who had just moved to Ventnor from mainland; they quickly pointed out that there wasn’t a professional dog & house sitting service for long stays who provided the services that I do. I then set up ‘Pawfect Sitting Services’ and started receiving bookings from September 2017. The business exploded, I renamed it to ‘For Pet’s Sake’. (Until March 20th 2020 and Covid-19 forced me to close temporarily. We are now open again and look forward to caring for your babies and your home.)
