Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???

We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Trading Standards have a few scams to share with you this month. • First of all a reminder about the Loft insulation phone calls that have been plaguing Island residents. Do not respond to these calls and do not permit a “surveyor” to visit your property. They would, without doubt, find a problem in your loft and then charge you extortionate sums to “fix the problem” • If you are trying to renew important documents online be very careful as there are many copycat websites out there who will charge you to process the application (The DVLA charge will only be for the Driving Licence or Passport etc) it is likely you will also not receive the documents you have applied for. Always use official government websites when carrying out these transactions • Fake Amazon emails are circulating saying that you need to update your account – this is a SCAM do not click on any links • Be wary when buying items on Facebook from apparently local sellers. Reports have been received about fake accounts who will advertise items for sale, take your money and then you receive nothing. If you have paid through Paypal friends and family you will also have no recourse to a refund • Reports of rogue traders again on the Island. Do not engage with anyone who knocks on your front door and offers to do work for you – they will not be genuine and you could find a £20 job turn into a £2000 job and these traders can be intimidating and persistent. As always forward any scam emails to report@phishing.gov. uk and scam texts to 7726. Ensure that you use valid and trusted websites and that any trader you employ is reliable and trusted.

News Report from Cllr Joe Robertson - Bembridge joe.robertson@iow.gov.uk

I am pleased to have been appointed Shadow Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health by opposition group Leader Steve Hastings. I will be joining both the Corporate Scrutiny Committee and Adult Social Care Policy & Scrutiny Committee at the Full Council Meeting in July. I look forward to working with colleagues across the chamber and drawing upon my own professional and voluntary experiences in these areas.

the Council does not miss statutory deadlines, especially on a planning issue as important as this with over 300 objections. I will also be writing to the Planning Inspectorate drawing attention to the Council’s own reasoning for a refusal in its reports and I will bring together all the well-argued issues contained in the 300 objections from residents.

Looking across the Island more widely I am concerned by some elements of the plans to reconfigure Ryde Esplanade transport interchange. The overall intentions of the plan are positive and there are many progressive elements, however there are some aspects which need changing. These include the proposed demolition of the pier café, public toilets and flower gardens to make way for a larger car drop off area. We should be protecting useful green spaces and public amenities and discouraging unnecessary vehicle movements and congestion. The proposals also include new traffic lights at the bottom of George Street to allow buses to cut across the flow of traffic rather than joining the flow as they currently do. This risks congestion where there is none currently. I have discussed this at I am disappointed to report that the Isle of length with some Council colleagues and Wight Council planning department missed local businesses who agree the plans need looking at again. the statutory deadline for determining the application at Love Lane (21/00224/FUL). I continue to work closely with Bembridge They finally published their report on 7th July and as previously communicated, this Parish Council in responding to concerns raised by local residents. We are in would have been a decision for refusal. dialogue with Tesco to explore options to As the statutory deadline was missed the reinstate the free bus service. I understand formal decision will now be made by the Panning Inspectorate. I have written to the that discontinuing the bus was a decision Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning to taken off Island and I am hopeful that it will be reinstated. ask what he will be doing to make sure With the recent wet weather, drainage has been tested in Bembridge and some properties have suffered flooding and damage. I have met with residents in the High Street and Hillway to have a look at the problems with drainage for myself and the damage that has been caused to properties. It is very apparent from inspecting drains along the High Street that they have become blocked, and the water is unable to properly soak away into a secondary drainage system under the middle of the road. I have had a number of separate communications with Island Roads and have asked that an extensive drain clearance operation be undertaken so that it does not happen again. I will continue to monitor this.

News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com Cllr Jonathan Bacon At County Hall the new Administration has just launched a major consultation about a new Island Plan. This is the document that sets out the local rules dealing with planning and development. As such it is one of the most important documents for the Council and indeed all residents. It is not in its final form yet by a long chalk, but we have decided the best thing, rather than keeping working on it behind closed doors, is to let people see it, discuss it and comment on it. We want to make sure we receive as many comments as possible in order to shape the document, as far as possible, to match the wishes of the community. To this end, local consultation events will be being held across the Island. Details of events in this area should be announced soon. Because the Central Government controls aspects of the planning system it would be unrealistic to say we can accommodate everyone’s wishes but, alongside this consultation process, arguments that the Island should be considered differently to the mainland are being actively advanced. We have a good case. One thing that has already been achieved in the new document is to bring down the number of houses that need to be built each year. The new figure is 486. This is a significant reduction from the previously suggested figures of 641 and 1,045. In my role as lead Councillor for Heritage and Environment I want to make sure that the Plan protects and enhances our natural landscape and resources. I am pleased 10

that the version now being consulted on contains, for the first time, policies to support Dark Skies and our Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). These follow on from work I did in 2018 - 2019 on the AONB Committee. I now want to make sure the Plan also recognises and supports the fact we are a UNESCO Biosphere, which is still not sufficiently recognised. I hope all residents will take the time to consider the document and contribute their views. The consultation will run until 30th September to give plenty of time and opportunity for this to happen. Alongside these big issues I am actively dealing with local concerns day to day. If there is anything at all you want to speak to me about, please feel free to contact me at any time. I will always respond to messages. You can also speak to me at my surgeries the next few of which take place as follows: Brading Community Centre 27th July and 24th August, both at 10am St Helens Pavilion 10th August and 7th September, both at 10am

Gus Jonsson is one of the Isle of Wight’s most sensitive and descriptive storytellers. Vectis Days, his second volume of autobiographical memoirs is out now. Like volume one, Vectis Voices, it continues his childhood memories of growing up on the island, exploring themes of family, friendships, forbidden loves, health and wellbeing and social acceptance in a post-war working-class society. Vectis Voices and Vectis Days are essential reading for islanders and available now from Ryde Bookshop - 135 High St, Ryde, W.J. Nigh & Sons - Shanklin, and direct from www.brandicat.com
