It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. As always they will be providing a free hot meal and a pudding, to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, or anyone who will be on their own. Organiser Kay is asking for your help - Please see below a list of the kind of things they need. Last year they served 144 dinners on Christmas Day. Alongside this they also provided 140 families with hampers. Volunteers - They need volunteers to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. They need people on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests (time to be confirmed). People to help serve guests and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Drinks (non alcoholic) Pop, flavoured water, Fruit juice. Gifts - Men’s, ladies and children’s. Hampers - Tins of veg and meat, pasta, non perishables as well as fresh nearer the time. They are also looking for people to help with preparing the hampers the week leading up to Christmas. If you can help in anyway or would like to join them on the day please contact Kay via email at Kay.willett@salvationarmy.org.uk for more information. There are drop off points in Ryde and Newport Salvation Army Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10-2 , Salvation Army Ryde & Shanklin Charity Shops Mon – Sat 9.30am – 5pm 2

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Procurement, Waste Management, Special Projects & Forward Planning. Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk I was privileged as both the Ward Member, and also as Cabinet Member, to attend The Minster Church of St. Thomas and lay a wreath at the Remembrance Sunday Service for the centenary of the Armistice. It was a very solemn and poignant event. It brought back memories of when my father (who enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1939) and my mother (who was a nurse and fire warden for bomb sites) recalled stories of the Second World War. There are so many brave people who protected us then and do to this day. I am in awe of them all. On a different topic, it really annoys me when minority groups use the power of social media to spread false messages such as all waste on the island goes to the landfill. It’s a myth! The council currently recycles 55% of waste on the Island. This is ahead of our target and, along with the opening of the new recycling plant at Forest Park next year, will go towards our goal of diverting 90% of waste from landfill by 2020. This will mean that we will not have another landfill site on the island. This has been down to the tremendous effort of residents across the island to separate recyclable and non-recyclable waste. My aim, and that of the council, is to lead the country in waste management. The BBC has identified the Island as one of the authorities that recycle more plastics than any other. So, let’s stop any false or negative messages. This is an achievement we should be very proud of for the island. The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill communicate with charitable organisations, such as, businesses, Aspire, Food Bank, Action 4 Support and others. The Cabinet continues to hold meetings outside of County Hall; November saw a very open and well attended meeting at Ryde, with discussions on the budget. This is the first time that a serving administration published budget options four months before the actual budget was presented to Full Council which demonstrates transparency in the delivery of council services. The next Cabinet meeting will be held on 10th January 2019 at Cowes Enterprise College with members of the public welcome to attend. The festive period is fast approaching, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Peaceful and Happy Christmas and I will see you in 2019.

BEMBRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL
The Clerk to the Council 5 Foreland Road, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, PO35 5XN Tel: 01983 874160 Email: clerk@bembridgepc.org.uk Armistice Day centenary commemorations On Sunday 11th November at 10.45am the village played proud host to a Remembrance Service at the War Memorial Gardens, Church Road to remember the fallen and mark the centenary of Armistice Day, which signified the end of the First World War. The service was attended by over 500 residents who came out in the autumnal weather to pay their respects, giving a strong community feel to the event – with all the knitted poppies and decorations around the village and memorial being made by villagers and local schoolchildren. Following the Remembrance Service, residents enjoyed cakes, sandwiches and refreshments at the Village Hall where there was also music by the Bembridge Village Band. War Memorial restoration project and new ‘Tommy’ During the Remembrance Service, the Parish Council was delighted to formally showcase the village’s new ‘Tommy’ silhouette figurine at the War Memorial Gardens. Stop and take a look next time you’re passing! This is the culmination of a project to restore the War Memorial and the figurine is dedicated as a tribute to mark the centenary of Armistice Day. In addition to the new ‘Tommy,’ the stonework at the foot of the War Memorial has been replaced with new masonry, with the old stonework being re-cycled to provide the base for the new Tommy. The further additions of granite plaques– commemorating the two 10
WW1 airfields in Bembridge – plus woodchippings and extra planting has made this a very attractive added feature to the War Memorial Gardens. The Parish Council would like to thank the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust for providing the two plaques, which sit proudly either side of ‘Tommy.’ In partnership with the Bembridge Heritage Society, the Parish Council has produced a leaflet with information about the two WW1 airfields that were in the parish – RFC Forelands and RFC Bembridge Point. The leaflet is available in hard copy from the Parish Office and the War Memorial Gardens or online by visiting the parish website at www.bembridgepc.org.uk. Hang an original star in your home, business or group window or garden, complete an application form and return to the Parish Office by 7th December.
