Thank you for picking up a copy of ‘Your Local Community Magazine’ and welcome to the February issue. Without wishing my life away, I am always pleased to see the back of January - it’s always a bit of a dreary month and seems to go on forever!!! At the time of writing this there is a warning that a cold spell is heading our way so remember to keep warm and take care of yourself when you are out and about. If you have older relatives or neighbours please always take the time to pop in and check they are ok and to see if they need anything. This issue is packed with news and information and if you are looking to keep your brain active and alert I can recommend trying the puzzles on page 10. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13 will keep you informed of events happening locally and across the Island throughout February. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council are working with the local school and historical association on developing a heritage trail for residents and visitors, with the support of a grant from Down To The Coast. Major Landmarks, such as the Fort, former Railway Station and track, the Duver and original Golf Course, will all feature on the trail, together with local characters and former residents: hopefully, the project will involve other community groups and organisations, and we will welcome contributions from parishioners. The Parish Council are also working on a response to the draft Island Plan, which is subject to consultation by the IW Council, and our meeting of February 11th 2019 will focus providing a comprehensive response to the plan and associated documents - we encourage all residents to view the document and comment, as the plan has implications for the village for years ahead (the Parish’s response will be on our website). Residents have also highlighted plans for Guildford Park and Fakeham Farm, and consideration will be given to these and other proposals of interest to the local community - in addition, there is an opportunity to comment on local infrastructure related to any development. Progress has also been made on the renovation of the Duver Toilets, legal guidance has been commissioned, as has a survey of the drainage at the Duver - preferred providers have been selected to undertake the renovation, and it is anticipated any work will be completed by Easter.

NB - No further information is available on Station Road Toilets - as soon as there is information it will be published. Members of the Council are also working on further protection for the Greens, options for the provision of a Meadow, as well as ensuring the limited resources of the Parish providing for grounds maintenance - working with the Sports Association to ensure the needs of residents are met. The Parish Council are also focused on ensuring next years Budget continues to protect the services provided by the Parish, as well as develop the quality of provision secured by limited finances - discussion will include investment in the Duver, alongside the renovation of the Public Toilets, and provision of waste collection amenities. Colleagues from the National Trust will also be attending the meeting, on Monday 11th February 2019 in the Community Centre, to outline their plans for the Duver and residents will have the opportunity to contribute to the discussion - the Duver is a environmental landmark of the village and the Parish are actively involved in working with partners to ensure the continued maintenance of this area. Hopefully, residents will contribute to the consultation on the draft island Plan, the proposed Heritage Trail, or take part in the next (or future) meetings of the Parish Council - the Parish values the contribution of residents and help at a time when difficult decisions are having to be made.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Procurement, Waste Management, Special Projects & Forward Planning. Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 It has been a busy start to 2019 and with very positive news for the Island. Part of my cabinet portfolio is Waste Management and, I make no apology for focusing this month’s article on recycling across the Island.

authorities across the country to improve their recycling rates. We are delighted to be exceeding the government’s recycling target and we are proud to share our best practices.

According to new figures from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), household recycling rates have dramatically improved on the Isle of Wight in the last year.

On a similar note, recent media reports have focused on food waste collections being introduced by central Government for all LA’s – yet again the Island is ahead of the game here. Food waste has been collected at the kerbside since 2012.

In a league table featuring 345 Local Authorities (LA’s) from across the country, the Island has jumped from 130th to 51st between 2017/18 In 2017/18, 53.4% of all household waste was recycled on the Island; this is above the national average and indicates an increase of 6.9% in just one year.

It is our goal to be the best LA in the country for waste management and being known as the most environmentally friendly county in the UK, to help protect our beautiful Island. Diverting waste from landfill also re-enables us to direct funds to other areas of the IWC.

These initiatives have been assisted by the implementation of a monthly IWC Community, I would like to thank the Island residents for Plastic and Environmental Forum, which has taking on the task of recycling their waste so brought together organisations and businesses diligently by separately recycling food, paper across the Island to discuss the relevant issues and card, textiles and plastic and metal and to help us reach our goal. Amongst others, glass. This indicates to me the positive results representatives from the IWC, Amey, Surfers of our recycling promotion gained through Against Sewage, Plastic Aware have attended events, social media campaigns and the the forum. We are looking forward to future council and our partners supporting Islanders. presentations from the Ellen MacArthur Accordingly, working in partnership with the Foundation, Red Funnel, IWC (outlining the council, Amey and Island Roads, we have most recent strategy) and Transition Island. achieved such a leap up the recycling league Anyone wishing to attend should contact me table in such a short time. for details. The national recycling target for LA’s in England is to reach 50% by 2020 – the IWC has already met this. The IWC effort to beat the national target for recycling household waste has recently attracted attention from central Government. DEFRA has invited the council to share best practice and help other 6

Further improvements are expected to our recycling rates with the completion of the Islands new waste facility at Forest Road, Newport, which is due to open later this year. Another important topic to note is that

Three tasks are underway: the iconic front doors of the hall are being re-painted, whilst inside the kitchen is being refurbished to make it more 8

user-friendly and up-to-date to serve the needs of its many users, with the blessing of the Village Hall Management Committee. At the same time the Parish Council are at last providing a unisex, disabled accessible toilet in the middle of the village. Given that the Village Hall was built in the 1920’s and the fact that the premises are not open 24/7, the public accessible toilet will be our effort to provide accommodation that will be open to both sexes and to those disabled people currently unable to use the toilets in the village centre, which will be an improvement and appropriate for the space available and within the limited funds of the Parish Council budget. There will also be a baby changing facility. At last disabled residents and visitors will be able to relieve themselves in the village 24/7! Wildlife verges The Village Partnership is exploring wildlife verges in and around the village. This follows on from the successful daffodil bulb planting at Lane End. Over the spring the Village Partnership will be surveying suitable verges and entering into further discussions with Island Roads. 2019 Litter Picks & Beach Cleans The Village Partnership is busy organising a schedule of beach cleans and litter picks around the parish. Keep Britain Tidy has organised the nation’s largest ever mass spring clean between 22nd March – 23rd April. To coincide with and take part in this initiative a litter pick has been planned in Bembridge for 6th April. continued over the page

The Bembridge Belles WI by Christine Behan It was thought that there may be a need for a second WI in Bembridge and two taster sessions were held during the autumn to test the water. The response was unfailingly positive and it was decided by vote that the new group would be established. On 14th January the inaugural meeting was held at The Spinnaker, Steyne Road. We had no idea how many ladies would attend and it was an amazing result to see 55 ladies attend the meeting. This was an almost over-whelming number and twice The Spinnaker had to provide extra seats in the room. 40 ladies signed up and paid their subs and we have further ladies wishing to join at the next meeting. We ran out of Welcome Packs but more are on their way. There was an astonishing feeling of goodwill, positivity and enthusiasm which is marvellous. We have a Committee and it is indicative of the enthusiasm for success, that when we issued an SOS for a Secretary, we received within minutes one volunteer and within a couple of hours a second one. So we are in the very fortunate position of having two Secretaries who are job sharing. At the meeting we appealed for a Programme Secretary and immediately got another volunteer. So we have a President, a Treasurer, two Secretaries, a Programme Secretary and a Committee Member who will be greeter/welcomer as well as supporting the Committee in every way possible. So The Bembridge Belles WI now exists and will meet on the second Monday of each month at 2pm in The Spinnaker, Steyne Road. The Spinnaker has made us extremely welcome and we appreciate their marvellous co-operation. Nothing has been too much trouble and every request has been 14

fulfilled with a smile. Our future plans are already fixed until June. The next meeting will be on Monday, 11th February at The Spinnaker at 2pm. We are very grateful that Steve Warburton has agreed to give us an illustrated talk ’60 Birds in 60 Minutes’ . Many Bembridge people already appreciate how the Warburton family’s supermarket ‘Welcome’ contribute to the village in many ways. Steve walks home from the shop in Lane End to his home by the harbour. He is a keen bird watcher and his talk will show us the birds he sees on the way home. Later in the Spring, the Bembridge Belles WI will recreate Steve’s walk in reverse, so that they can finish with refreshment at either The Tollgate or the Pilot Boat. In March we are visiting the Island Cheese Company. Some ladies will meet at The Pointer for either a late lunch or early tea before the visit and some ladies will meet at the Cheese Company. This visit is already oversubscribed as the Cheese Company can only accommodate 30 ladies at one time. We will try and fit in a second visit later on. In fairness, we have had to give priority to ladies who are already members of the Bembridge Belles WI. We would be delighted to have new members or visitors at our next meeting on 11th February. There is no charge for visitors and you will be warmly welcomed. So its full steam ahead for the Bembridge Belles WI.

Watching you, Watching him... It appears that something has caught the eye of this magnificent kestrel on the front cover and luckily it caught the eye of local photographer Neal Staley who was able to capture this amazing shot. This remarkable bird of prey was spotted from the bird and squirrel hide at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve and is just one of the many species of nature that Neal comes across when he volunteers at the hide a couple of mornings each week. Neal has taken to photography as a means of therapy following a serious car crash in 2012, which then resulted in him being medically retired in 2015 from the RAF after 24 years of service. His life changed dramatically on many levels and he has now found comfort in the nature and wildlife that surrounds us. Neal is in the process of going live with his website but you can also see his work via Instagram and Flickr under the names Neal Staley Photography.
