Have a Flippin’ Great Pancake Day This year Shrove Tuesday falls on the 25th February. The exact date varies each year and can be any Tuesday between 3rd February and 9th March inclusive. One thing that remains the same is that it always falls exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday. The name comes from the old word ‘shriving’, which means to listen to someone’s sins and forgive them. In Anglo-Saxon England, Christians would go to church on Shrove Tuesday to confess their sins and clean their soul. In other words, they would be ‘shriven’ In the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day! Traditionally during Lent, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat would be given up. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat them – and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake! Today, we continue to whisk up these treats - but nowadays we add all kinds of tasty toppings, too, such as fruit, honey, chocolate and ice cream. Pancake races are a super-fun Shrove Tuesday tradition. In this mad-cap activity, people race each other whilst tossing a pancake in a pan. The story goes that it originated way back in 1445, in the town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England. A woman was so busy making pancakes that she lost track of time. When she heard the church bells ringing for the Shrove Tuesday mass, she ran as fast as she could to make it, and arrived still carrying her pancake in the pan! On this day, a whopping 52 million eggs are used in the UK alone! That’s 16 million more than the average day. 2
Welcome to the February issue which arrives with a big sigh of relief that we made it through January; the month that goes on and on and on, which wasn’t helped with all the rain and wind that we’ve experienced recently.

IWC Housing Needs Survey Have your say on the Island’s future housing needs by taking part in an online survey or collect a hard copy from the Parish Office, 5 Foreland Road, Bembridge. Forms need to be returned by 16th February 2020.
growing and aging, and that currently we don’t have the right mix or number of homes available. We also know that building homes takes time to plan and to deliver which is why we’re doing this now as part of the core planning Island Plan review.”
The Isle of Wight Council wants to give residents the chance to share their views on the housing needs of their area to help understand what homes the Island might need in 15 years’ time. The results will form part of an evidence-based case being prepared by the council to demonstrate the real housing needs of the Island and challenge government-driven housing targets.
Households are encouraged to complete the online survey as fully as possible at https://www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/IWHousingNeeds2020
The six-week study asks for information about current households, for example the number of people living there, number of bedrooms and whether the home is rented, mortgaged or owned outright. It also looks at future household needs, such as whether children might move out of the family home in the next few years and if so, what their plans could be and needs from Island housing. Council leader Dave Stewart added: “Different people, families and individuals will have very differing needs — whether it’s starter homes, flats or supported living and extra care opportunities. If we don’t know what this is, then we cannot start to plan effectively. We know the population is

Help from One Island to Another Since hearing about the news of the raging fires in Australia and having family out there herself, local resident, Amber Taylor-Wilcox is asking anyone who can knit, sew or crochet to help her make pouches, wraps, nests and blankets to be used by rescue centres in the rehabilitation and rescuing of native animals. She is working closely with the Animal Rescue Craft Guild and below are details of just some of the items needed.
The views and opinions expressed by contributors and advertisers are their own and do not reflect the views of the Editor or Island Magazines unless stated otherwise. Island Magazines reserves the right to refuse or alter material where necessary.
Crochet birds nests - A variety of sizes (from 3-12 inches in diameter). Use acrylic or wool in 8 ply or DK. No yarns that are ‘fluffy’ like mohair. With the walls up, it’s a nest for birds or a flat bottomed pouch for an animal. Pouch sizes needed - 10cm x 15cm; 15cm x 20cm; 25cm x 35cm; 35cm x 40cm and 50cm x 65cm. Closed on the two longer sides and one end, and open at the top. Knitted Outer Pouches:- 8 ply or DK wool (they are unable to use pouches made from synthetic materials as the joeys cannot breathe in closed synthetic pouches). Fabric Outer Pouches:- Cotton, flannelette, polar fleece, wool, jersey, sweatshirt material, etc. Poly blends and synthetics are OK. French seams are not needed for outer pouches. All Inner Pouches:- 100% natural fibre only (cotton, bamboo, linen, silk). Flannelette or plain cotton are great as well as stretchy t-shirt cotton. Fabric should be very soft (what you would give to a baby). French seams are a must for all joey pouch liners. The lining should not be attached to the pouch as it will need to be changed regularly. Onward shipping has been arranged to the ARCG and her family will also deliver to local hubs for distribution across Australia. You can drop your items at any of the following collection points, IOW Zoo, Sandown; Lanesend Primary School, Cowes; Vic Tavern, East Cowes; Dog Grooming Centre and Monkey Haven, Newport; 4c Oakvale, Oakfield, Ryde; Tapnell Park Farm, West Wight. 5
Bereavement is the period of grief and mourning after a death. Grief is as unique as you are, and as individual as a fingerprint. Each person will be affected in his or her own way because everyone is different – even in the same family. Butterflies Bereavement Support is a community-based bereavement charity and was set up 3 years ago to meet the growing demand of supporting the emotional and physical needs of those aged 16 plus who have experienced the loss of a loved one or a friend through death. Butterflies is inclusive, everyone is welcome. They are not a religious organisation or connected to any other charity. They are here for bereaved families and individuals who need care and support following the passing of someone special in their lives. Butterflies Bereavement Support is made up of volunteers who have experienced their own loss, and each of them have received varying levels of training and continue to be trained in all aspects of bereavement. It is the invaluable support of a growing team of dedicated people locally who are giving their own time, skills and talents to be there to listen, counsel and support throughout the year. They offer accessible Counselling Sessions, drop in and chats, evening bereavement support groups, bereavement cafe’s, Suicide Prevention and Support, Dementia and Bereavement Support, Pre-Bereavement Support and activities to alleviate loneliness. Bereaved people, even those who have witnessed the peaceful death of a loved one, often need to tell their story repeatedly, and at that important part of transferring the experience they endured into a memory, instead of reliving it like a parallel reality every time they think about it – they are here to encourage open discussion with all people. Butterflies is transforming the lives of many – and many more will be transformed in the future. Butterflies Bereavement Support are looking for volunteers to become Bereavement Buddies. Their bereavement buddies have the chance to become trained listeners and achieve Level 2 counselling skills and then further development and training opportunities. They also are looking for welcomer’s, team leaders and people who can help with admin and fundraising. If you or indeed you know of someone who would benefit from support call them on 07889009393 or 01983 619503. If you are interested in volunteering email Paul at info@butterfliesbereavement.co.uk or for more information about Butterflies Bereavement Support visit their website www.butterfliesbereavement.com 6

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk As we entered 2020 I felt it was a good time to reflect on all that has been achieved since the 2017 election. When I was first elected and joined the Cabinet in 2017, my aim was to bring the Isle of Wight into the top 50 authorities in the UK (out of 345), regarding waste management. As of 2019 we have moved up to 36th, according to figures recently published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for 2018/19 – rising from 51st the previous year. The Island’s percentage of household waste sent to reuse, recycling or composting has improved to 55.7 per cent, compared to 53.4 per cent in 2017/18. Nationally there was a 0.3 per cent improvement indicating the great commitment our residents are making to recycling initiatives throughout the Island. With the pending go-live of the Forest Road recycling site, we are on target to be the best local authority in the country, regarding recycling and waste management. Garden Waste – Spring is just around the corner and the waiting list is open for the green garden waste kerbside collection service. If you don’t already have a garden bin and want to join please provide your email and postal address online: https://bit.ly/2QAbOKQ. Subscriptions will open in mid-February to start collections for April – March 2020/21. 8
Over 7,000 households already subscribe to this fortnightly kerbside collection service. Planning – this continues to be a concern which residents raise with me. I would urge all residents to complete the island-wide Housing Needs Survey recently launched by the Isle of Wight Council. This can be found online at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ IWHousingNeeds2020 Alternatively, paper copies of the survey are available at the Bembridge Parish Council office. The findings of this survey will inform our approaches in the Island Planning Strategy and Housing Strategy. Please take the time to complete the survey – this is a crucial plan for the future of our island. Dog Fouling - I have received a number of complaints from residents regarding an increase of dog fouling which can lead to an on the spot financial penalty for the owner. The Council promotes and monitors responsible dog ownership and, whilst many dog owners act responsibly it only take a minority to cause an issue. When taking your dog for a walk, particularly in these dark mornings and evenings, take a torch and please respect that other people are using the pavements and parks.
News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill Annual Waste Survey - the annual residents recycling and waste survey is now open and is an opportunity for householders to put forward suggestions for future improvements or ideas on how the Island can reduce our waste and recycle more.

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council continue to work towards improvements to the Public Toilets on the Duver, and local residents have welcomed the accessible toilet remaining open over the winter and into the spring, Plans are being developed to continue the renovation programme, and consider the installation of babychanging facilities, as well as amenities that will better provide for visitors and residents. The Parish Council have taken part in discussions to better protect the boundary wall at the Parish Church, which, due to its location, is regularly damaged by vehicles – creating health and safety issues, as well as expense for the church. Working is ongoing with the Community Payback team, benches around the Parish have been renovated and the area near the Village Map, on the road to the Duver, also repaired, has been the subject to much positive comment and appreciation by local residents. Following lengthy local consultation, and working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, there has been new drainage and surface water protection work undertaken on Station Road, near the Bus Shelter, to help address the ongoing issues – the situation will be monitored and members recognise the historic background to the issue and the 12
number of wells that used to be on the greens. Further discussions have also been held over the protection of the Greens, recognising the usage of the greens but also clarifying what measures could be taken to ensure the future of the much needed green spaces in the village: recent road works have also helped improve the public realm, and members have highlighted the need to ensure projects protect the Green at the same time. Progress continues to made on the Heritage Trail and the potential development of a further historic project for the Village, and involving the local school. This has included discussions with Isle of Wight Council regarding the need to ensure appropriate usage of the Car Park adjacent to the Sports Pavilion, and the introduction of new signage with clearer enforcement guidance could help address the issues raised by residents and taken forward by the Council. At the next meeting of the Parish Council in February 2020, members will discuss the precept, local planning issues and ongoing public realm improvements in and around the village. Members will also discuss the co-option process for a new Parish Councillor, and work programme for 2020/21.
