New for 2019

Web: yeoldevillageinn.com

Thank you for picking up a copy of your local community magazine which is filled with news, information, features and much more. There will be no mention of the weather this month, as I really can’t find any suitable words to describe it... I’m simply throwing open the curtains each day and just dealing with whatever season it is! The next couple of months are set to be really exciting as July kicks off carnival season and who doesn’t like a good carnival! There are 18 carnival events happening across the island in July and August with a mixture of children’s, main and illuminated. I think we can safely say there will be something for everyone. On page 11 you will find a handy list of locations, dates and times to cut out and keep so you don’t miss out. On a more serious note we have got together with Andy Hollebon of the Organ Donation Committee, Isle of Wight NHS Trust to bring awareness about the changes happening to organ donation next year and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family. You will find this feature on page 8.

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. I BELIEVE IN YOU Get in touch today 01983 754 666

I have been to many seminars, courses, retreats, conferences, workshops where it is plainly obvious the people running them are using them to upsell their more expensive products. These can cost thousands of pounds and whilst they give you a glimpse of what they offer, you never actually get Email: hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk to benefit from it unless you pay out that money. There is also a lot of claptrap being sold out there that is solely to make money, and is not focused on YOU. I offer coaching and mentoring - for YOU to make changes in YOUR life, to help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it... There is no catch.

If you would like help with your personal development, career development, relationship issues, limiting beliefs or something else, please get in touch via hello@maggiecurrie.co.uk and we can have a chat about how best YOU and I can work together. Sometimes it can seem to be too scary to be coached on your own, so I also offer group coaching. There is a powerful energy when groups get together for growth and transformation, both personally and collectively. I offer face-to-face, phone or skype coaching sessions for a minimum of 3 sessions as I believe building trust with each other takes time. The 3 sessions of coaching include interim email support. Coaching sessions are anything from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on how much is covered or how much time is PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL needed.

BEMBRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL

5 Foreland Road, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, PO35 5XN Tel: 01983 874160 Email: clerk@bembridgepc.org.uk

Bembridge North Ward Election Mr Jay Chapman was declared the new Parish Councillor for Bembridge North Ward at the election on Thursday 13th June which had a 35% turnout. Best Kept Village The Green Towns Group are always busy making sure our village looks its best. If you are concerned with litter/untidy areas/bushes overhanging the footway or anything else please let the Parish Office know. Campaign for our Community – Bob Seely MP The Island is currently facing a grave threat from an Isle of Wight Council 2018/19 consultation plan that represents a manifesto of destruction of our much loved Island character and landscape – with the proposed building of nearly 10,000 new homes in a 15 year period, destroying hundreds of acres of much-loved Island countryside and with no provisions for jobs, infrastructure or community balance. The IWC plan includes a provision for 180 homes in Bembridge, despite the objections of our community and Parish Council. Please complete Bob Seely MP’s survey and petition for a more sustainable housing development plan for the Island by going to www.islandvision.uk/islandplan Bembridge Heritage The Society has grown steadily since the mid 1990’s and is a popular part of village life with meetings throughout the autumn, winter and spring and members providing enthusiastic and knowledgeable support 6

as volunteers to man the Centre through the summer. Visits to other attractions and heritage walks are often undertaken by members. All visitors are very welcome to attend the meetings which are held in the Village Hall. Events are advertised on local notice boards, in magazines and the IW County Press. The Society produces its own publications and these are available for sale through the Centre and local outlets. There is a small annual membership fee of just £5 per annum giving you newsletters and new information and discounted entrance to our meetings. Do your family know whether you want to be an organ donor? Have you ever talked about organ donation with them? If the answer is no, then you’re not alone; sadly, many donation opportunities are lost every year because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor. From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. Even with a change in the law next year we need more people to talk about organ donation to increase the number of transplants that happen. It will be just as important in 2020 to join the Organ Donation Register and discuss your wishes with family and friends as it is now. You can record your decision to opt in or out on the Organ Donor Register. Those excluded will be people under 18, people who have lived in England for less than 12 months or who are not living here voluntarily, and people who lack the capacity to understand the change. Adults covered by the change will still have a choice whether they want to be an organ donor and which organs they would like to donate, and their families will still be involved before organ donation goes ahead. In the UK…… • Around 6,000 people There’s no time like the present to talk about it. Nationally across the UK are waiting for millions of people are on the NHS Organ Donor Register an organ transplant already but only one in every hundred will die in • Three people a day die in circumstances where they could donate, so every donor is need of a transplant due to precious. Here on the Island there are about 60,000 people a shortage of people being on the Organ Donation Register which means there are willing to donate organs around 80,000 people who are not on the register. Last year • Only one in three adults there were 8 organ donors on the Island resulting in 20 has told their partner / family patients receiving a transplant. You could help someone their organ donation decision. waiting for that vital call, by joining the NHS Organ Donor More info www. Register and by telling your family. Register now at organdonation.nhs.uk www.organdonation.nhs.uk. Staff at St. Mary’s Hospital work closely with Specialist Organ Donation Nurses from the national NHS Blood and Transplant organisation to ensure that organ donation proceeds smoothly in a way that meets the wishes of the donor and family. The Island’s Organ Donation Committee want to start a support group for everyone with an interest in organ donation – friends and family of donors, donor recipients and anyone else with a particular interest. This informal group would provide an opportunity to talk about experiences and to participate in awareness raising activities. If you would be interested in being part of the Island’s Organ Donation Support Group then please contact me by e-mailing andyhollebon@nhs.net or on 07544-555839. St Helens Parish Council

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council, together with residents of St Helens, are preparing a strong response to the proposed development adjacent to Guildford Road (Guildford Park) – members understand that the project is due to be discussed by the IW Council Planning Committee at its July meeting, and the Parish Council will be using part of its meeting on Monday July 8th 2019 to highlight its position and highlight specific concerns, as outlined at the Public Meeting in August 2018 and in writing.

renovation of benches across the Parish, as well as other Public Realm maintenance – this follows the work undertaken on the Memorial Shelter in the Village in 2018.

Residents are also encouraged to respond to the Island MP’s consultation and petition regarding the proposed housebuilding programme for the Island – the Parish Council have submitted a full response and met with Council Officers to clarify the position of the Parish Council, highlight inconsistencies in the draft plan, as well as detail the implications the proposals have for the Village. VILLAGE PROJECTS The Parish Council are supporting both the Carnival (26th August) and Village Fayre (30th June) for 2019, recognising the value these traditional events have to the local community, as well as visitors to the area. The Parish also expressed concerns about the decision of the IW Council to introduce overnight parking Charges (£1 between 6pm and 8am), and the impact this will have on users of the Duver, as well as the costs of introducing the scheme.

Members also agreed a programme of mechanical cleaning of the beach, as part of the ongoing parish investment in the Duver – alongside working with the National Trust – benefitting residents and visitors alike.

Working with Community Payback, the Parish have identified a maintenance programme that will include repair and 10

Funding has also been agreed to help towards the maintenance of the Parish Churchyard, and, with Seaview and Nettlestone Parish Council, there is on going partnership work on projects, including planning applications, of joint interest.

One project, that is planned to be in place by the Autumn, is the installation of a defibrillator – sponsorship is being sought, and further details will be available in future reports. The Parish is also being judged for Best Kept Village and South East England in Bloom, recognising the investment made by the Village in the Public Realm, as well as the high standards of private gardens, and the work undertaken by the Horticultural Society. Thanks again to everyone that has been in touch with the Parish, and support for the actions being taken to maintain and improve the village.

News Report from Cllr Brian Tyndall Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. Tel: 07922 565940 E: brian.tyndall@iow.gov.uk The ferries have recently reported an increase in passenger numbers to the Island indicating that it is still a popular destination. How much this was due to the Island’s Derek Sandy performance on Britain’s Got Talent - singing “Welcome to the Isle of Wight” – who knows? Or it may have been the two recent television programmes, James Martin’s Great British Adventure and his visit to the Isle of Wight and his praise for the great food we produce here; or the Escape to the Country, where even the presenter was impressed what the Island has to offer. And the national press seem to be having a spate of articles on island – all good news for our tourist trade. It’s just proving this is a great place to live. Locally I attended the Brading Community Partnership Grand Opening of the new kitchen and was pleased to see that our MP Bob Seely found the time to be part of this momentous occasion; despite his busy workload. Our Mayor Julie Smith cut the red ribbon to open the event. MP Bob Seely is also looking to visit all Town and Parish Councils to discuss the high housing numbers dictated by the Government – which he disagrees. This is supported by the Conservative Administration who will be submitting a counter argument to these numbers. We have been advised by the Government that these numbers are not fixed and can be challenged, but must be 12

evidence based. There is a great deal of confidence that this can be achieved. As an Isle of Wight Councillor my selection as Chair of the Audit Committee has been confirmed – even more papers/reports to read and comprehend! The Isle of Wight Council have received national recognition being shortlisted in this year’s Municipal Journal Achievement Awards for: Care and Health Integration; Best Council Services Team; Corporate Director of the Year; ‘Rising Star’ and Senior Leadership Team – all thanks to the efforts of the IOWC staff. Heather Jameson, editor of the Municipal Journal stated “Being shortlisted for five awards is a major achievement, and the Isle of Wight Council should be proud of its achievements”. And there’s more! The Isle of Wight Council has been nominated as a finalist in the Local Authority Success-Overall Service Change category – in the 2019 Materials Recycling World publication National Recycling Awards. So the Island is punching above its weight on the National Scene, proving again – if we did not know it already – it’s a great place to live, work and play.
