Looking out for Hedgehogs... Some people are lucky enough to have a regular nightly visit from these adorable mammals. The island as a whole has a love for all wildlife and it is good to know that there is a specialist team of hedgehog carers for the island and their work involves offering advice, support and information to the public. They also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. We have got together with Zoe from Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight and Zoe has kindly given some advice below to ensure the ongoing protection of any hoggies we come across. What to do if you have a hedgehog visiting your garden? Always have fresh water available and you can also put out dry cat or dog food. Make sure any netting is secured as they could get tangled up. If you have ponds either cover over or add in a ramp for access in case they fall in. Have a messy patch as they love rummaging in undergrowth. Enjoy them from a far. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble If a hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be walking like they are drunk or unsteady – this is a sign of dehydration. A hedgehog walking with purpose might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest, she would be carrying nesting and then would transfer the babies. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see strimming injury’s, always feel around before gardening. If there is an obvious injury place the hedgehog in a light colour towel, in a high sided box and call myself or Jacquie on 01983 613145 and we will offer the advice you need. Save Our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight often attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and their Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where they provide updates of the hedgehogs they have looked after. www.facebook.com/saveourhedgehogs 2
Hello and welcome to the July issue. I’m extremely excited that this issue is back to being in print as the last two months have been online only due to Covid-19 regulations and although this worked well at the time I know many of you missed going out to pick up your copy from local distributors. I haven’t yet reinstated the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section as most events have been cancelled and everything is still very much ‘up in the air’ but to ensure you don’t get bored I have included a double page puzzle section which will keep your brain active!! Following the great response I had last month on how great the new ‘recipe’ section was I thought it was only right that I give you another mouth watering treat, and you will find this on page 9.

I have got together with our hedgehog carers this month and on page 2 you will find a useful and informative article along with some gorgeous pictures. Inside you will find the latest news reports ensuring residents are kept up to date with news for the area. It is great to see local shops and businesses opening again and shopping will certainly be different to what we are used to, but I think with all that we have gone through the last three month we can adapt to anything. Keep safe everyone and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Residential rubbish is being left beside the public bins in Lane End cemetery, which is unpleasant for those visiting the graves and has to be cleared by the Lengthsmen. Notices have been put on the bins and we are monitoring the issue.

Daisy, Daisy…. A blanket of daisies reaching as far as the eye can see… and what a beautiful sight it is. Although the photographer of this meadow, James Whillier sees this view many times a day he never gets bored of it and certainly doesn’t take it for granted. He was kind enough to capture it and allow us to share in on this month’s front cover. Daisy Valley as James likes to call it is a very special place, and this wild flower meadow was created by Chris Spence the owner of the farm who over the last 50 years has planted thousands of trees and flowers to ensure the continued survival of our birds and bees. James lives in Calbourne and is lucky enough to run his own fishing bait and essential tackle shop from here, so this is the view that welcomes him every day. When he is not working in the shop James can often be seen roaming around the farm taking pictures of local wildlife and the inhabitants of this gorgeous meadow. His business is called Baitstation and is open until 8pm and is located on Newbarn Farm in Calbourne. It’s a traditional shop selling bait and tackle for sea and coarse fishing but with a modern outlook as he likes to promote catch and release.

LIONS CLUBS OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT - WE SERVE In January 1970 the first Lions club was inaugurated in Ryde. There are now 3 more Clubs and a branch club on the Island. Although these clubs are all working to the same goal, to serve the communities of the Island and beyond, they are all autonomous of each other as they can conduct their business and efforts in different ways, yet can also work together on larger projects. This year Ryde Lions Club are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The club, which was first chartered as the Isle of Wight Lions Club on the 13th January 1970 had 17 Members but when Newport Lions Club was set up The Isle of Wight Lions Club was renamed The Lions Club of Ryde and became the Mother club to Newport. Shortly after, two more clubs started up, first at Ventnor then Sandown & Shanklin Club. Finally, another started in Cowes as a branch of Newport some 16 years ago. Many thousands of pounds have been collected on the island to help local communities but also a much smaller amount has gone to help people who have suffered catastrophic disasters all over the world such as Nepal, and the awful tsunami at Christmas 2004, and closer to home in Boscastle and the floods in Yorkshire. 100% of all monies collected from the public is sent to nominated good causes. Volunteers receive no remuneration for their work in the community but give their time willingly while making sure they have fun doing it! The island clubs are part of a much larger organisation called Lions Clubs International (LCI) and they are one of the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in over 200 countries. Collecting money is just one part of what they do, as members of this huge organisation they carry out many other tasks as well, such as painting a room or providing carpets for a deserving family or doing beach cleans, building garden fences for people who are unable to afford a replacement of their own and help run free prostate screening tests for men on the island. They also help charitable organisations such as Mountbatten Isle of Wight to run fundraising events, or work hard with others to help keep the Daisy bus running, so that islanders can attend hospital on the mainland for cancer treatment. They care for the environment by collecting plastic and rubbish around our island and collecting used spectacles for use in emerging countries of the world. There are always opportunities to be part of a Lions club on the Island and they are keen to hear from anyone who has a desire to know more about what they do, how they help people and the enjoyment that can be gained from helping others. You can contact them on the island by calling 0345 833 5789 and you will be contacted by the club in your area.

ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING AMAZING THINGS
Home-Made Ice Cream Summer is here at last... and nothing beats a bowl of ice cream on these sweltering days. Gone are the days of needing specialist equipment and with just two ingredients plus your chosen topping it’s so easy to make yourself. This recipe is a favourite of Sophie Toogood who enjoys making this silky smooth ice cream with daughter Layla. They have been experimenting with flavours and below is the main recipe and some of their favourite suggestions for flavours. Ingredients 1 can of condensed milk 2 cups or 450ml of double cream Method 1) Whip the double cream until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over whip. 2) Add in the can of condensed milk and continue to whip just until the condensed milk is combined with the cream. 3) Add in any flavorings you wish and stir through the mixture. (see ideas below). You can make any combination you wish! 4) Scoop ice cream into resealable tub. Cover the ice cream mixture in clingfilm to stop ice crystals forming, put on the lid and put into the freezer for 6-8 hours until set.

For chocolate ice cream, add in 2tbsp of cocoa powder (it will look light at first, but it soon darkens up while the ice cream is in the freezer) You can also buy some chocolate sauce and drizzle it through the mixture and on top as an extra burst of flavour. 9
News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk As we now enter another month of lockdown the Covid-19 restrictions start to be relaxed and some contact with friends and families is possible. Of course, that is providing we all continue to follow the current Government guidance. During lockdown I for one have appreciated going out and enjoying the good weather and fresh air; the Island really is a beautiful place to live. Council work continues however, and one issue I have received many resident complaints about is people are leaving rubbish around full litter bins instead of taking it home. Every Island household has waste and recycling collections so, if a bin is full please take your rubbish home. The community spirit and determination of everyone to cope and help those who require it continues to be outstanding. As we move into the next phase I hope that spirit continues and becomes the new’ norm’ for the future way of living and working. A robust recovery plan is imperative for the coming months and, the IWC has to consider how it will recover and restart services that have been affected, in the face of a potential gap in the budget. The recovery plan includes: • • • 10
continuing to support care homes during the pandemic continued arrangements to support the NHS Covid-19 app; Continued phased re-opening of Island schools;
•
• • •
managing any increase in visitors to the Island as restrictions are eased; accelerating the Island’s Mental Health Plan with a specific response to Covid-19; reviewing housing support services to tackle the increase in homelessness; and developing funding bids to further improve cycling and walking.
I hope that you continue to keep safe and healthy. Should you need help, please telephone the IWC Coronavirus helpline 01983 823 600 or, for the latest Government advice, please visit the IWC Coronavirus website: https://www.iow.gov.uk/ Council/OtherServices/Public-HealthCoronavirus-COVID-19/Advice1 Island residents can also access mental health support and advice online at www.iwmentalhealth.co.uk Meetings To ensure safety, meetings continue to be held virtually running online via Microsoft Teams. St Helens Parish Council Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council thank residents for their continued observance of the guidance that has been provided during the pandemic, and for the support of the community for the helpline service provided via the Isle of Wight Council Hub (phone 823600), and Community Action website. Volunteers in St Helens, via the local network, have supported vulnerable residents with provision of shopping, collection and delivery of medications, as well as other support, at a time of need – the same information has been provided for other support that is available to local businesses and voluntary organisations. The Parish Council are continuing to monitor and review the situation, and have maintained services where it is safe to do so – and have worked with partner organisations and agencies, following the guidance, and ensuring services are maintained where possible. Discussions have been had to continue the maintenance of the public spaces, and the Green, and the safety of all involved has been the priority – Councillors appreciate the value of Public Spaces at this time, both for exercise and for the environment, and have made budgetary provision to continue this service. Work, within the guidance, has also been undertaken to prepare the public toilets at the Duver, and are now re-opened (initially accessible Toilet) and include new baby changing facilities, as well 14
as continuing the provision of existing amenities, such as outside tap, dog lead facility, defibrillator and seasonally increased cleaning. Members will continue to monitor and review the situation as guidance evolves, and will work with other local stakeholders to take appropriate action when required – many of the plans for 2020 have had to be delayed due to the pandemic, and the Council appreciate the support and understanding of the community during this time. The application for the nationally prestigious Seaside Award was successful, and the Council appreciate the support of local businesses - it has been very difficult for local businesses at this time and the Seaside Award is recognition of the collective efforts of all involved. Beach cleaning is continuing and in line with other Councils on the Island; and the provision of larger waste bins, in 2019, has continued with additional collection when required – and users of the Duver, and other amenities, are requested to take litter home with them to reduce the potential for fly tipping, and impact on other users of the amenities. Initial work has started regarding VJ Day 75 in August 2020, following the design of a commemorative VE Day 75 by the local primary school. Further work has been undertaken in Station Road, near to the Bus Shelter, continued over the page
