elcome to the July issue and thank you for picking up a copy of ‘your local community’ magazine.

At the time of writing we are having some great summer sunshine and it’s nice to see so many people out and about enjoying the island while still keeping social distancing practices in place. The beaches have been busy and some favourite picnic sites around the island have been bustling with families and holiday makers making the most of what the island has to offer. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is being slowly reintroduced as a monthly feature, but the events are very much dependent on government guidelines. You will find this section on page 10. If you have an event happening in August, please feel free to email the details to islandmagazines@gmail.com. Inside this issue you will find the latest news and information for your area, our puzzle section, editorials and adverts from local businesses who all appreciate your support when using their services. I hope you all have a great July and hope the sun keeps shining and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

I would like to thank local residents further. for all their hard work in opposing this unnecessary proposal and for formally objecting in large numbers on the Council’s planning portal. I am concerned by the continuing vegetation clearance and tree works and have raised this with the Isle of Wight CPRE branch as well as the Council. As your local Isle of Wight Councillor, I continue to have meetings with residents and groups about a wide range of issues. IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • An email from McAfee stating that you need to update your Microsoft Windows version. Be very careful when you see messages purporting to be support for your device – don’t leap in and click on links. Think about it and chat with somebody who is familiar with IT. • A message from Whatsapp about updating your settings. Take some time to think about what you are doing and are you making sure that your account is protected and private. • Calls about your debit or credit card being used and large amounts taken. These calls will ask you to press for contact with an investigator who will then ask you for all sorts of banking details. Don’t follow the instructions on the call - contact your bank and check with them. • These are all scams. • Hang-up on calls. • Seek advice on scam calls on the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline: 0808 250 5050 • Forward texts to: 7726 • Forward emails to: report@phishing. gov.uk • Report a scam call to Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040

News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com Cllr Jonathan Bacon As I write this report the latest news of what will happen regarding the easing of ‘lockdown’ has just been announced. One thing is clear, and that is the island has opened its doors already and we have a large influx of visitors. Many accommodation providers are reporting record bookings. While this is good for our hospitality businesses (although ongoing restrictions will determine how much benefit they will be able to get) it does bring its own problems. I am particularly concerned about the amount of litter we experienced over the half term week. I am therefore seeking, both through the Parish Council and the Isle of Wight Council, that we ensure there are adequate bins and collections over what will be some very busy months. There has been some confusion over the position in respect of dogs on St Helens beach. In part this is due, for whatever reason, to a failure to install proper signage. This is now being dealt with but, to clarify, the position is now that dogs must be kept on a lead along the full length of the sea wall but there are no restrictions on dogs on the beach. That said, we all hope that owners will be responsible and keep their dogs under control and clean up any mess, particularly as the beach is going to be very busy this summer. I have posted full details of the current rules on my Facebook page. Since writing my last column the balance of power at County Hall has been

determined. We now have a new independently led ‘Alliance’ in charge and I am very privileged to have been asked to oversee the Heritage, Environment and Waste portfolio. I am hoping to be able to use this role to contribute to supporting and enhancing our amazing countryside as well as keeping control over development that threatens it. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I will always respond to messages. You can also speak to me at my surgeries the next few of which take place as follows: Brading Community Centre 29th June and 27th July both at 10am St Helens Pavilion 13th July and 10th August both at 10am

IWASP Update One scam that appears to be quite prolific, with a large number of reports received, is around loft insulation.

If you are concerned about somebody you care about or for more information on scams visit www.iwasp.org.uk

Residents are reporting calls from a Bournemouth number and the caller will offer you a FREE survey to find out if your loft insulation is causing damp issues. If you agree to the survey they will book somebody in to come and have a look and we can almost guarantee that they will find problems and then proceed to do the work for you at in inflated price. The Footprint Trust have advised us that in most cases fibre glass loft insulation does not cause damp issues and if it does it can easily be remedies by pulling it back from where it touches the roof which increases airflow. 12

If you want to broaden your knowledge about scams and doorstep crime go to https://www. friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ and watch a short video Be very wary of any links you click on social media and never give information in this way. Remember to treat any unsolicited/ unexpected communication with caution.
