Save our Hedgehogs Isle of Wight We are hedgehog carers for the island and our work involves offering advice, support and information to the public and we also take in injured or sick hedgehogs to help them recover before releasing them back to the wild. Hedgehogs are at threat of extinction with numbers declining rapidly so helping everyone be more aware is really important. If you want to encourage hedgehogs into your garden make sure you have small square entry points, always have water available and you can provide dog or cat biscuits too. If you think a hedgehog is in trouble. Place in a light coloured towel in a high sided box and call Jacquie or Zoe on 01983 613145 who will offer the advice you need. Some key things to be aware of. If a Hedgehog is seen in the daylight it might be in trouble, as they are nocturnal animals. They might be a new mother moving a nest especially if she has been disturbed. Watch for signs she is moving her nest. If not, it probably needs checking over. In the autumn the juvenile’s born will likely be too small to hibernate so they will need to come to us for the winter. Be careful when clearing your garden too as we see many strimming injuries, always feel around before gardening. If there is obvious injury or you are just not sure always call us so we will take them in. We visit vets if need be and rehabilitate them often releasing them back to where they were found.

We attend events across the island and take hedgehogs along for people to see and our Facebook page has lots of helpful hints and tips and is the place where we provide updates of the hedgehogs we have looked after.
Another month has flown by and here we are with the June issue. As I write this introduction the sun is shining and I really hope that June is the start of the summer season and we get to enjoy many more sunny days here on the Island. I have already had my first picnic of the year at the beach, it was lovely and sunny one moment and the next it was raining, thankfully not heavy but I was in a difficult conundrum; do I pack up and run to the car as quickly as I could or do I ride it out and get wet. Well, I did the latter but after 20 minutes I gave up! This months front cover is amazing and all thanks to local photographer Nick Edwards. You can read all about Nicks passion on page 5. Keeping on the wildlife theme, on page 2 you can read all about helping to save hedgehogs here on the Island.

This is especially important if you have a medical condition, especially diabetes. Cutting them incorrectly can result in an ingrown toenail, which can be extremely painful. Even if you don’t have a medical condition, just reaching down and getting the correct angle can be difficult and sometimes that is why it is best to seek help from a professional. Shan McManus is a qualified practitioner and offers a Toenail Cutting Service in the comfort of your own home. For more information call Shan on 01983 406403.

BEMBRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL Bembridge Friendship Circle The group is now actively fundraising for a new community bus. The current one is 10-years old and will require money spending on it shortly so the trustees of the organisation are hoping to replace the minibus in the near future. The recent Jumble Sale was a huge success and just under £400 was raised which has been ringfenced for the replacement vehicle. A Grand Plant sale is taking place at the Village Hall on the 1st June again to raise funds. Thanks to Marianne Sullivan who is donating the plants. Please come along and support the group on the first Saturday of the month. They have a variety of different stalls and our fabulous 150 Club draw takes place.
