IW Trading Standards have a few scams for you to be wary of. • Reports of scam texts and emails purporting to be various mail providers, claiming that you need to pay extra for a package or asking you click on a link which could install malware onto your device – the companies all involved state that they would never contact you in this way (how would they know your phone number?) and would put a card through the door. • Reports that the National Insurance scam has been using an 01983 number – please don’t believe that just because it appears to be a local number that it is genuine, numbers can be purchased and are frequently cloned. • A message purporting to be from Google to say that your phone has viruses and you have to click the link to repair the problem – Don’t – this is a scam. • There appears to be an increase in reports of banking texts and some residents are reporting that these messages are being followed up by phone calls stating that there is a fraud on your account, they may even draw your attention to the number they are dialling from – it will be the banks number – again these can be cloned. Hang up do not engage with these criminals and call your bank on a number you have found yourself to ensure that your account is secure. • Lots of reports in the past few weeks about rogue traders. Whether they are looking to carry out work on your property or buy gold or jewellery from you our advice remains the same – Do Not trade on the doorstep you will be conned out of money and if they are carrying out work it is likely to be of poor quality and the price they quote at the beginning will escalate during the process. Remember • Scam texts can be forwarded to 7726 • Scam emails can be forwarded to report@ phishing.gov.uk • No cold calling stickers are available by emailing trading.standards@iow.gov.uk

elcome to the June issue and near enough the halfway point of the year... and what a year it’s been!
Do you feel life is slowly returning to normal with the easing of lockdown? Or are you finding it hard to remember exactly what ‘normal’ life was? There is no doubt that many things have changed in our lives over the last 15 months, some good and some bad. Many people have embraced the time by learning new skills and have seen life through different lenses but how many of these changes are we going to continue with when we completely move out of lockdown. Many of us our re-evaluating what is really important and what isn’t. Local elections are finally over and congratulations to all those that were elected and re-elected. Councillor Jonathan Bacon has kindly agreed to become a monthly news contributor and you can read his first report on page 6. We have some great local businesses advertising with us who will appreciate you using their services and please let them know you saw their advert here. The weather hasn’t been brilliant so far but let’s hope that is destined to change. Whether you are sitting indoors while it rains or sitting on the beach soaking up the sun you can enjoy our puzzle section on pages 12 and 13. I hope you have a great June and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Steyne Park Updates The play area surround has been cordoned off for urgent maintenance. The Lengthsmen have removed the wooden surrounds which were rotting and replaced with turfs, which will be safer and easier to maintain. Works on the gate entrance to the play area are being looked at and quotes sought for a new gate and wetpour surfacing to replace stone/wood path. ROSPA are due to carry out their annual report this month.
commenced. Whilst starting the work it was found that one of the kitchen windows needed major repair and a new fire door was required which should be covered by the contingency.
Following complaints of footballs being kicked into the park bordering properties, a new ball stop net system has been purchased to ease the problem behind the goal posts. Hedging in front of some houses is non-existent which would be a barrier for people entering properties to retrieve balls, as well as making the park look more aesthetically pleasing, so more hedging and trees, donated by Cllr Sullivan, will be planted in the autumn.
Bembridge Friendship Circle Two Trustees, Sheila Weedall and Margaret Donlon, have resigned this month from the Committee. Enormous thanks go to them both for their hard work in securing funding for the new minibus and tireless contribution to both Coffee Mornings and Mystery Tours. Thank You.
Damaged picnic tables are being replaced by the play area and a new bin will replace the burnt bin by the cricket nets. News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk Jonathan Bacon for Brading and St Helens Firstly I would like to say thank you to all of those who voted for me, but more importantly I want to state that my role is to serve every resident in the ward of Brading and St Helens and I promise to do this throughout my term to the best of my ability. At the time of writing, it is only just a week since the votes were counted and only a few days since I attended County Hall to sign my formal declaration of acceptance of Office. As such I have very little news to report, however I hope to use this column to keep readers informed of my activities and to pass on useful information from and about the Isle of Wight Council and what it is doing. I have been able to set up a meeting with the Legal Department of the Council to discuss the pending case over the status of Guildford Road in St Helens. This case is obviously key to the Appeal that has been lodged against the rejected planning application for houses on Guildfork Park. The Appeal has been put on hold pending the determination of the case. I will keep you informed. I can be contacted at any time and I will always respond to messages. I have set out my contact details below. In addition, I will be holding regular Councillor Surgeries. These will take place on Tuesday mornings every two weeks alternating between St Helens and Brading. The first one will take place on Tuesday 1st June at 10am at The Brading Centre and then on Tuesday 15th June at the same time at St Helens Sports Pavillion. I will make sure a full list of dates is published soon.
If you have existing email details for me these are still available to use, but to try and better organise my local Council business I have set up the following addresses: sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com bradingcouncillor@gmail.com You can also use my official Isle of Wight Council email address detailed in the header. Please get in touch if I may be able to help you in any way. I look forward to speaking with you.

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk ST HELENS PARISH COUNCIL – APM – PROJECTS COMPLETED DURING THIS TERM (4 YRS) The Parish Council currently operates a “Lead” Councillor Policy which basically means individual Councillors identify projects which with the agreement of the PC they take forward, reporting on progress at subsequent Parish Council meetings • St Helens Beach – Lead – John Coleman The Isle of Wight Council decided to close the Toilet Facility on the Beach at St Helen’s; the Parish Council subsequently purchased the facility from the IWC. After a full refurbishment programme the facility was re-opened to the Public and has remained open since; the accessible toilet 24/7 and the Ladies/Gents during the Holiday season. Part of the refurbishment programme was the re-installation of the outside tap and we have also put in place an annual planned maintenance schedule. Another addition to the facility was the installation of a De-Fib unit which is another first for our Beach. We increased the capacity of the litter bins and the units are now emptied on a daily basis during the holiday season plus more frequently if required at the discretion of our contractor. We also engaged with Nodes Point Holiday Park who provided manual litter picking on a daily basis around the Old Church area in the Summer Season. All the above measures resulted in St Helen’s Beach being awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Beach award for 2020. *We have just received notification that we have been successful again for 2021.
• General Maintenance within the Village – Lead – Joost Spit Joost has put in place a comprehensive maintenance programme for the Village, this has included the refurbishment of all the benches within the village . The PC has been working with the Community Payback Team on this which is an extremely cost effective arrangement; the work is ongoing with several projects in the pipeline including working with the Church on the renovation of the Lyche Gate/Church yard and the old Church Green furniture. • Village Greens – Leads- Victoria Duckett & Kevin Tutton Our Village greens now have in place a plan for their upkeep and protection going forward. Protection of our greens going forward is an extremely important issue; again we are taking expert advice on this with measures being put in place to take this project forward. The PC has “ring-fenced” funds to cover the anticipated expenditure for this in the operating budget 2021/22. A new drainage system has also been installed in Station Road around the Bus Stop area this has solved the slimy pavement problem, which had been around for several years. • Village School – Lead – Richard Priest ( Clerk). + John/Joost/Victoria We have been actively engaging with the Village School on several projects including the 100 year anniversary of the ending of the Great War. The Children also designed a garden for Armistice Day planting flowers at the Community Centre in the form of a Cross and a shrub in the School Grounds. The Project ‘on the go’ at the moment is a Village Heritage Trail, which was paused continued over the page

Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk during Covid but will start up again once guidance allows. Funding for this project was achieved via an outside source hence had no impact on the PC’s reserves. • Finance – Lead – John Coleman/Richard Priest By diligently managing our funds we managed not to increase the Community Precept for the third year running, whilst also building up our reserves which now stand at £25k approx. These reserves will assist the PC in undertaking its planned projects going forward plus facilitate any new projects that come to light. • Planning - Lead – Kevin Tutton/Victoria Duckett. We have put in place a template which allows for individual Councillors to respond to our Lead(s) on Planning, they then gather the data before forwarding onto the Clerk for onward transmission to the Planning Officer if required. We have also robustly responded on several planning initiatives to the appropriate Authorities, including the Guildford Park Development and the IWC Planning Strategy Document. We are, to our knowledge, one of the few local authorities that have been invited in to meet with the Planning officers to discuss our comments, being that we are one of the smaller authorities on the Island this is quite an achievement! • Website – Lead – Joost Spit Joost has completely refurbished our Parish website; it is now extremely user friendly, with updates being added on a regular basis. When our Heritage Trail Project with the School is completed, the relevant data will also be added.
• Parking Strategy Consultation – Lead – Kevin Tutton Kevin undertook a comprehensive study of the Parking arrangements for the village residents, he instructed an outside expert to formulate the options. The cost of this was partially funded via a grant, several options have been explored and will be taken forward once the current Covid guidance allows. Ongoing Projects for the New Parish Council to Complete/Consider (1) Green Protection – lead – Kevin Tutton (2) Heritage Trail – leads – Joost Spit - ? (3) National Trust Presentation / Engagement – Lead- John Coleman (4) Church Green Refurbishment – Lead – Joost Spit- ? (5) Planned Maintenance of the Village Furniture – Lead – Joost Spit (6) Engagement with IWC Officers / IR – Lead – John Coleman (7) Maintenance of the PC Website – Lead – Joost Spit (8) Continued Management of the Toilet Facility & the Beach in General – Lead – John Coleman. (9) Engagement with local Businesses – Lead – John Coleman (10) Parking Strategy for the Village – Lead – Kevin Tutton (11) Engagement with Village School – Lead – John Coleman/Joost NB. Obviously further projects will be identified going forward, but we have to be careful that we don’t take on to much which could result in failure to complete some of our initiatives already in place 9

The Friends of St Mary’s Need Your Help By Lesley Myland Here we are approaching a second summer of challenging circumstances but the Friends of St Mary’s continue to provide a retail service which the staff at the Trust clearly appreciate. They give us a great deal of support and encouragement which helps to keep us going. In spite of being in a rather reduced situation, we are carrying on and planning for opening up a little more widely as soon as we can. We have hopes of reopening in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre and although it will not be for a while yet, we hope to resume our trolley service to the wards. We know how much this is missed and are working on an ordering service which we hope will bridge the gap in the meantime. The Charity will soon be preparing to ask hospital staff to consider how we can help them again in 2021 from the ‘Friends Fund`. We are pleased to say that we have many donations from patients who have been cared for at St Mary’s during the pandemic crisis and we have been greatly moved by that, but we do need to get fundraising again, particularly as we do not have the range of retail services that we did have supporting our funds. Recently we were overwhelmed by a gesture from a member of St Mary’s pathology staff, Jussna Mateen. She arranged for her colleagues to be able to take home curry dishes made by her family’s restaurant, Spice Central in Cowes. Proceeds from the event which amounted to well over £1,000 were donated to the Friends. The occasion marked the end of Ramadan which is regarded as a charitable month and we were honoured to be included in this way. A huge thank you to Jussna and her family who worked hard to make everything go so well and I can personally say that the food was fantastic! If there is anyone out there who might be able to think of ways to help us like this, please let us know. Our Business Manager, Debs Downer will be pleased to hear from you. You can contact us via email info@fosmiow.co.uk, or telephone 01983 534405 or our website www.fosmiow.co.uk.
