Welcome to the November issue of your local community magazine which is bursting at the seams with news, information, event details, advertisers and so much more. November 5th is Guy Fawkes and although watching the fireworks is great fun please remember that animals aren’t keen on them. If you are holding your own event please let your neighbours know in advance so they can take the appropriate action of keeping any family pets indoors. For an amazing time without the hassle have fun at one of the many organised events happening across the island. You will find all the information on our ‘dates for your diary’ section on pages 6 and 7 which is filled with an assortment of events including Christmas fayres and winter carnivals. If you are holding a community event in December please email us the information and we will include it in next months diary section. I hope you all enjoy this months issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month with the Christmas edition. Have a great November...

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The October meeting of the St Helens Parish Council was held on the 8th October and discussed a range of local topics, including the conclusion of the due diligence on the toilet block on St Helens Duver. The Parish Council subsequently approved the recommendation to acquire the Duver Toilets on a freehold option from the IWCC and to adopt a conventional toilet model for refurbishment, with a budget set of £15,000; which is available from allocated Reserves. The Parish Council agreed with the decision to suspend the village parking review option to increase the parking capacity along Lower Green Road, through the provision of echelon parking. Initial feedback from Island Roads had indicated complications with the road layout that reduced the additional capacity and also increased the estimated costs beyond the resources of the PC. The Parish Council also approved funding of various projects to recognise the 100 years memorial of the end of WW1. The planting of bulbs on the 14th September to create a living cross outside the Village Community Centre, will be followed by a special School assembly involving the presentation of a commemorative mug to the children (designed and chosen by them). A Commemorative Plaque recognising the sacrifices of local people will also be
placed outside of the local Community Centre; with activities culminating in the Church Service on Sunday the 11th November, where local School children will have the opportunity to read their poems specially written for the occasion. (please see opposite for a small selection of poems written by some of the local children) St Helens also received the Silver Award, from South East England In Bloom, for the appearance of the Village, and recognising the contribution made by residents to the provision of welcoming environment and maintenance of the Greens – they highlighted the work of the Horticultural Society and the countless Gardens that made the Village a highlight of South East England. Plans are also being developed for a special December event involving the local Church, Parish Council and other stakeholders – the Parish has allocated some funds and will update residents in future editions. Initial work, with the Historical Society, is in hand to develop an innovative and imaginative heritage project involving local school students and the wider community – this will harness the key features of the Village and link to trails and walks in the area, as well as use new technology to create a unique visitor and resident experience.
We will remember Upon our tears and far away Where we stand and pray Bomb them down and bomb them up They shall live forever To not be forgotten Live on and on For they are not forgotten or dead They are alive For the great they did We will remember
Sadness Lives lost forever, bombs, you will never be Forgotten soldiers lay dead Explosions, war, braveness, grateful Courage, cities devastated, houses burnt Loves ones gone, silence terrifying for the Families, they shall not grow old They fell facing their enemies to the end We will remember soldiers lay dead on this day
Darkness falls over the red valley Trumpets blare as I stand, gunshots sound as you fall I will die with my family around me but You died with your face in mud You loved so much, you gambled your life for us. We will remember As we remember soldiers brave We see the poppies and the grave We still hear the Trumpets sound And Glory that shines upon us All the lives and people killed As the stars that shine bright The buildings burnt and cities gone The sadness and the poppies We will remember you We will remember We will remember The sacrifices you made for everyone of us We will remember We will remember They will always have a place in our hearts To stand and pray To show that we remember who fought for us You risked your life, you lost your life And we are grateful for that They sleep beyond England’s foam Love and hope for the future And the glory that shines upon our tears Poppy fields stretching for miles and miles Just for you! You never looked back
The Glory The Bombs We Are Grateful Buildings down the lives are lost Why, we shan’t know. Thank you The poppies have grown. The gun shots Are loud. I remember, we all remember So The Glory The Bombs We Are Grateful The did their part, ours for silence.

BEMBRIDGE PARISH COUNCIL
The Clerk to the Council

Sadly Emma Goldring has resigned as Parish Clerk and has been replaced by Jacqui McDade, an admin officer is currently being recruited. Bembridge Village Partnership has been successful in being awarded nearly £4,000 towards the Bembridge Wave Sculpture project from Down to Coast. As part of the project a competition took place for local artists to paint a mural on the currently unattractive walls facing out to sea, beside the Lifeboat station, that encapsulates the wave theme to celebrate coastal arts. Verena Sparrow, a local Bembridge artist, won the competition and throughout the summer has brought the design to life. During the challenge many passers-by were interested in the mural taking shape with local children contributing by painting the eyes of the fish and some of the shells; a memory we hope they remember. Look out for the next phrase. The War Memorial restoration will be completed by 11th November and there will be new plaques from the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (ABCT) and the Comrades Plaque will be relocated to the rear planted bed. Then the ‘Tommy’ will be installed within the rear bed with a new up light and planting in readiness for the 100 year commemorations in November. Following the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial, Church Road on 11th November, there will be cakes, sandwiches 8
and refreshments whilst listening to the Bembridge Village Band commemorating the WW1 Centenary. STAR COMPETITION Following last year’s successful Village Star Competition, help Bembridge twinkle even brighter this year by placing a star in your window or garden. To enter the Village Star Competition hang an original star in your home, business or group window or garden, complete a form and return to the Parish Office by 7th December and judging will take place on Wednesday 12th December. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in Foreland Road 1883, he was a frail child, who strove Bembridge. to improve his health by training in gymnastics. In 1912 he moved to England Contact Julie on and became a circus performer and 07813 635202 boxer. He was a prisoner during the First World War, and utilized this time in supporting prisoners with poor health to slimmingworld.co.uk exercise, using prison beds (early Pilates reformer machines). He then moved to the USA and continued to teach Pilates (known as ‘Contrology’) with his wife Clara. Pilates works within the principles of breath, concentration, centering, control, precision and flow. I use these principles within my classes and fully embrace the mind/body experience to support physical and mental improvement. I qualified in 2016 with the level 3 Diploma in Mat-based Pilates and ran my first class in Bembridge in January 2017. I now hold classes in St Helens, Bembridge, Brading and Seaview, catering for all age groups and levels. Each class is a pleasure to teach, and a joy to observe. I offer a mixture of mat work and equipment and vary each class. The age range varies from 16 years old to 83 years of age and all classes can be adapted to meet the needs of individuals. The venues are varied and based in the community which ensures a ‘family’ feel to the classes. We attend social events together and fully support each other in our continuing journey towards health and happiness. My aim is to offer each person the ability to improve their quality of life by increasing flexibility, muscle tone, joint mobility and core strength, thus improving posture and body awareness. ‘Change happens through movement and movement heals’ (Joseph Pilates 1880 – 1967). News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Procurement, Waste Management, Special Projects & Forward Planning. Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk The main news has been the proposed changes by the Boundaries Commission, with Bembridge separating from Brading and St.Helens to become a single ward. If this goes through it will mean that there is a dedicated County Councillor for each ward. The Local Government Boundary Commission is asking local people and organisations to comment on draft recommendations for new division boundaries across Isle of Wight. From my perspective I think that a split ward will have a positive impact, not just for Bembridge, but for the Brading and St Helens residents also. This stage of the consultation closes on 12th November, to submit comments please go to https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/ It has been a busy month with many events held in the ward. To name but a few Nunwell House hosted a charity event in aid of the great Brading Community Partnership and the Rainbow Trust which included a gifted performance by Gerald Dickens, great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens. I was invited by Aspire, Ryde to attend the visit by the Countess of Wessex. I am hoping to work with Aspire and other similar charitable organisations on the Island on how we can improve and expand the distribution of perfectly good food which is currently being thrown away. I also attended the Wight in Bloom Awards organised by Visit Isle of Wight. It was great to see some local ward winners including The Limes, Bembridge in the Best Senior Citizen Complex and The Bembridge Coast
Hotel in the Best Commercial Garden. Well done to all the winners. Although the weather was not very kind for the Isle of Wight Day, there was good turnout for the annual Bembridge Food Festival. It is always good to see so many Island businesses promoting their excellent goods and produce. I attended the reopening of the Causeway at St Helens on 8th October, which will be a great relief to all who use this footpath. I know this may have been an inconvenience to those who use the pathway, but the repair works undertaken will ensure that it will be robust and safe route in future. The recent IWC Cabinet tour had a great success with the inaugural meeting held in Brading. The meeting was well attended by residents and all three town and parish councils in the ward also attended and provided positive feedback. I would encourage anyone who is interested in their area to attend one of the monthly IWC Cabinet meetings. I continue to chair the monthly IWC Plastic/Environmental Forum, which now includes town and parish councils. We have had informative presentations from Surfers Against Sewage, Plastic Aware and Plastic Free Shanklin. The Forum has also been attended by Amey and Island Roads who gave the latest updates from work planned across the Island. continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill I am talking to several organisations, both charitable and commercial, about providing presentations to the Forum, to keep us updated on their plans on how they are making the Island a more environmentally friendly place to work and live. If there are any issues you would like to have raised, please get in contact. On that note I have instructed IWC officers to remove any single use plastic from any Local Authority offices and properties. If you do come across any instances where this does not happen, please let me know. Finally, a date for your diary. We are all looking forward to the Bembridge Youth and Community Centre fireworks night being held on 2nd November at Steyne Park.

Lots has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s as nearly all the equipment we granted funds for last year has been delivered. These items include: An Accuvein vein mapper which is a portable piece of equipment designed to find elusive veins without distress to the patient by holding the equipment above the skin. This is particularly useful for patients with conditions involving communication difficulties, which make them anxious during medical procedures. Sunshine Radio has been able to replace an outdated studio. The station broadcasts daily and handles many patient requests – a service which can be a great morale boost to patients and their relatives.

A tonometer has been purchased for the eye department. This makes the measuring of pressure in the eyes much less uncomfortable and stressful for patients. The Friends have been delighted to support Care in the Garden, and this has been done by funding the purchase of 15 attractive planters from them to place around hospital grounds. And last but not least for now, the Friends have funded four more vacuum mattresses for the Ambulance service. They are comfortable, warm and adaptable and provide a secure means of extraction for immobilised patients. We continue to raise funds with the help of the Island’s very generous public, and by far our biggest source of income is our shop and our cafes. Please do come in when you visit the Hospital, Laidlaw Centre or the Ryde Health and Wellbeing Clinic. And if you have a few hours to spare why not think about joining our lovely team of volunteers.
