The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Update By Lesley Myland You may have recently heard via various sources about the Friends’ foyer cafe moving to another location within the new outpatients department in the North Hospital. Naturally we are sad about this - we have been serving our customers in the foyer for 32 years. However, our amazing team of volunteers and staff have a very positive approach to this development. We are working hard together to ensure that the Friends’ charity will keep on functioning to support the patients and staff at St Mary’s. We plan to keep our amazing team together as far as we can. We will have a bigger shop and will still be running three cafes. Ward trolley services will still go round daily, sometimes twice daily. So there is still lots to do and we will do our best to maintain our reputation for a caring attitude and good service. In the meantime, here are some of the things we have given grants for, as always with the objective of enhancing care and staff well being. We have provided the maternity unit with 5 relaxing and reclining chairs so that partners can wait in comfort for their new babies to arrive, no matter how long it takes! We are very proud of our contribution of £1500 towards the Memory Room for dementia patients in Colwell Ward. This provides a place to relax and enjoy distraction therapies especially designed to be familiar, calming and absorbing. The room is also used by non dementia patients. Note the twiddlemuffs which were made by Friends volunteers and customers with wool kindly donated by members of the public after an appeal. We gave Children’s Speech and Language Therapy 2 iPads and a range of toys designed to help with speech, attention and listening skills which in turn help with other communication skills. As soon as we are settled in our new home in the North Hospital we hope that all our customers will still come and join us for their cuppa! That way we can continue with this support for the patients and staff at St Mary’s Hospital.

Calling all Knitters... Dementia Patients need your help The IOW NHS Trust is appealing for knitters to help create blankets for people living with dementia whilst they are in hospital. Blankets help patients, particularly those living with dementia, to recognise their hospital bed and help provide a more homely feel in a normally clinical hospital ward. Having blankets on the bed will also help patients to see the edge of the bed more clearly when getting in and out and therefore reduce the risk of falls. The scheme has been tried and tested at other NHS hospitals and the IOW NHS Trust is keen to roll it out locally with trials on Appley and Colwell wards. The Trust is now looking for people to help knit or donate wool or new blankets. They need to be brightly colour or patterned and no more that 3 ft wide. There is no restriction to length but to help reduce the risk of falls, short lengths would be preferable. Due to infection control, the blankets are single-use items and will be taken home by the patient when they are discharged. The must be knitted using new wool, or if anyone is donating blankets they must be brand new. People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep them occupied. The blankets (also known as sensory or comfort blankets) can also provide a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for those with dementia or even sight impairments. The blankets can have additional items stitched on with different shapes and textures. If people would like to be part of a dedicated knitting group, please let the IOW NHS Trust know; if they receive enough interest they will happily look into providing a knitting night so it can also become a social event for people too. Any donations of knitted blankets, new blankets or wool can be left at the main reception desk of St Mary’s Hospital, Newport. For more information contact mandy. blackler@iow.nhs.uk

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk Members of the Parish Council have installed a Defibrillator at the Duver Public Toilets, as part of the National Restart A Heart campaign, recognising the need to provide this much needed resource for the benefit of residents and visitors to the village – the investment has been supported by local businesses including Baywatch Cafe and Old Mill Caravan Park.
Work continues on the repair and maintenance of all of the benches in the Village, in partnership with Community Payback, and appreciate all of the positive comments from residents who have welcomed the work and how this has added to the appearance of the Village – helping secure a South East England in Bloom Silver Gilt Award for the appearance of the Parish.
Training is also being arranged for the Spring, involving local volunteers, and additional training will be provided for students at the local school, as part of a wider public engagement initiative being undertaken by the Parish Council.
Discussions are also in hand for repair of the greens, recognising the need to protect the area for the benefit of current and future residents, and also help ensure these amenities are available for community usage.
The Parish are also working on Remembrance Day projects with the local school, involving the historical association, and the Remembrance Day service planned for Sunday 10th November 2019 at the Parish Church, will involve representatives from the School, as well as the wider community: and will develop into a commemoration to mark the Centenary of the Parish’s War Memorial in 2020.
This includes the Annual Carnival, and residents are encouraged to contact the Carnival Association if they would like to be involved in the organisation of the 2020 Carnival – volunteers are welcome and details are available through the Parish Council, as well as through the associations facebook page. The Parish is continuing to champion the concerns raised by residents regarding plans for increased housing in the East of the Wight, including St Helens, and the implications this has for local residents, and is making representations to the local planning authority reflecting these views, and would encourage residents to also forward their comments.
Following meetings with the Local Authority, and other stakeholders, the Parish are working on proposals to improve and alleviate the ongoing surface water issue on the pavement by the Bus Shelter in Station Road – although the Parish are not responsible Public notices are also in situ advertising for the area, there is a need to work a vacancy on the Parish Council, and on viable solutions and have identified residents are encouraged to contact the funding to contribute to a solution.
