Slimming World launches new Methodist Church Hall plan to help slimmers Foreland Road in Bembridge stay slim for life Bembridge.
Contact Julie on 07813 635202 slimmingworld.co.uk
A weight-loss expert from Bembridge is excited to help even more people lose weight and keep it off for life thanks to a new initiative to support slimmers who’ve reached their target weight.
As part of a campaign to build in additional support for members who reach their personal target weight, Slimming World conducted a survey that found slimmers are more than twice as likely to describe losing weight as ‘easy’ compared to maintaining weight. Julie, who runs the Bembridge Slimming World group, says people who find maintaining weight loss challenging aren’t alone. Slimming World’s new initiative for target members addresses all of these challenges and aims to help make weight loss maintenance easier. It includes a new Slim for Life plan to help target members to adapt their diet to maintain weight rather than continue to lose. The plan, is designed to be personalised by slimmers, gives members the option of three routes depending on their rate of weight loss and introduces members to the concept of Savvy Syns which are a healthier or safer choice than other high-calorie and high-fat options because they provide beneficial nutrients. Members are encouraged and supported to make their own choices and a more flexible approach once they’ve achieved their personal target weight. Julie, who supports people to lose weight each week, says: “When members start their weightloss journey, it can be difficult for them to think too far ahead. They’re so focused on losing the weight that they find it difficult to even think about how they’re going to keep it off. This new guidance will really help our members to understand the importance of having the right mindset and behaviours from the very beginning of their journey, so that they can develop sustainable healthy habits and truly make a change for life. 2
Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. When we delivered the first issue last month we received a very warm welcome from everyone in Bembridge and St Helens and I would like to thank the businesses that have agreed to distribute this local community magazine each month and also thank you to everyone that picked up a copy to read. I can’t believe how quickly the year is going and how Autumn is upon us. The weather has changed recently and you can feel the chill in the air especially early morning and in the evening although we have still had some nice sunny days.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Procurement, Waste Management, Special Projects & Forward Planning. Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk Autumn is upon us, but the garden still needs as much work as ever. Luckily with the household garden waste bin the task is a lot easier! If you don’t have yours yet visit the council website to sign up IWC-Green-Garden-Waste-Scheme I have received very positive feedback from residents from my first article in the Island Magazines and hope it will continue to provide up to date information to you. Please do make me aware of any matters or events happening in the Ward which may be of interest. As the Cabinet Member responsible for waste management, this week I and the responsible Isle of Wight Council (IOWC) officers made a site visit to the Forest Park development to see the progress of the new recycling and energy from waste systems (see picture). I was very impressed at the cuttingedge technology and machinery I saw. With regards waste management, this development will propel the Isle of Wight up the league of local authorities in the UK and put us on our target in terms of redirecting waste from landfill to 90% by 2020.
The IOWC recycling has been moving up the UK table of top authorities for waste management. WasteDataFlow has stated that the IOWC have moved from 147th to 130th place (out of 351 authorities) and we are looking to improve that in the next couple of years. The IOWC Community Plastic / Environmental Forum continues to be well attended with themed speakers on the agenda including Surfers Against Sewage and Plastic Aware (two of the members of the Forum) relating to achieving our goal of having a single use plastic free island. I have continued with beach cleans during the summer months and was pleased to see that the annual ‘Isle of Wight Day’ linked its events into our on-going theme with the Isle of Wight Day mascot “Nipper the Crab” often seen helping on the beach. The IOWC Cabinet has already started working with officers to ensure that we continue to balance the budget for 2019/20. We are

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill determined to achieve this to ensure the Island moves forward with a solid financial base and deliver the best available services for residents. With Cabinet meetings now being held at locations across the Island, this gives residents an opportunity to get in touch regarding topics they wish the Cabinet to consider. It is good to see the first Cabinet meeting arranged for the Brading, St Helens and Bembridge Ward giving Town and Parish Council representatives the opportunity for direct discussion with the Cabinet. The Island now has many portable defibrillator devices situated at various locations. These can dramatically improve
survival rates for someone in cardiac arrest by sending an electric shock to the heart; statistics show use within 5 minutes gives a 74% survival rate. I am looking forward to taking part in the CPR and defibrillator awareness workshop which are taking place at Bembridge Village Hall on 20th October (4 separate hourly sessions between 13:00 and 16:00). Thank you to everyone who has been in contact to discuss any concerns or issues. A surgery is held prior to the Parish Council Meetings. Alternatively, please feel free to contact me direct.

Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to his collection of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. His prints are also available to purchase via Available Light Gallery in St Thomas Square, Newport. All of Nick’s photographs are amazing but I am particularly drawn to his hares as there is something captivating and mystical about them. We were lucky enough to feature one of his pictures on the front cover of the October issue last year too... I can’t wait to see what he will pull out the bag for next year. Keep watching this space. 7

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The recent meeting of the St Helens Parish Council discussed a range of local issues, including the IW Council public consultation to amend the common land registry by removing the Station Road toilets from the register. The Parish Council agreed the following comments for the consultation;
Meeting, enabling a go/no go decision by the Parish Council in time for the work to be potentially carried out as part of the planned highway improvements due later that month: improvements to include resurfacing works around the Village Green, as well as other improvements.
- the imperative to maintain the integrity of the Village Green for the benefit of the local community; - if the site is de-registered, and a decision made not to continue usage as public toilets, the land should be re-instated as Village Green and there should be further consultation with residents and the parish council on future usage; and - to address issues raised by residents.
The Parish Council also updated residents on proposals to recognise the 100 years memorial of the end of WW1, involving the local School, Church and Historical Society, commencing with the planting of bulbs for a living cross outside the Village Community Centre, with the support of historical information recognising the sacrifices of local people. Further activities are planned including students producing written commemorative verse to recognise the Centenary and the sacrifices made by the local community; With activities culminating in the Church Service on Sunday the 11th November.
During the IOW Council Ward councillor update, Cllr Brian Tyndall provided a summary of the IW Council proposed Boundary changes under public consultation, where St Helens and Brading would be collectively represented by a single Councillor. Later in the meeting the Parish Council agreed to support this particular proposal in their submission to the public consultation (end date 12th November). The Parish council also endorsed the Village Green Parking Strategy Review, commissioned by the Parish Council and IW Council. In addition, the Parish Council approved the funding for detailed designs, costing & benefits of the option to increase the parking capacity along Lower Green Road, by considering the provision of echelon parking (requiring the introduction of a one-way system along this stretch of highway). The aim being to provide appropriate details of the option for Lower Green road for public consultation prior to the 8th October Parish
And finally it was also noted that the Parish Council is in discussion with the Parish Church and local businesses over the arrangements for a Christmas celebration ‘’lights of love’’ (yes planning already!) connected to turning on the Christmas lights – further details to follow. Next Meeting The next meeting is provisionally set for Monday 8th October, at 7.00pm in the Community Centre. The Meeting will consider the Village Parking option (highlighted above) and also, most importantly, the proposed plans for the Public Toilets at the ‘Duver’. Members of the public are most welcome and encouraged to attend to meet the Councillors (including the IW Council Ward Member) and discuss their concerns and ideas for the Parish. An informal Members’ Surgery is held before each Council meeting, commencing at 6.40pm.
