Local business Four Seasons Cooking Academy is owned by nutritionist and food safety specialist Michele Newton and she has some wise words for us all… “The colder months are approaching and now is the time to get your immune system fired up to help you beat any seasonal viruses that will be lurking around and to give you a fighting chance to keep yourself healthy and ready to fight whatever is thrown at you” Michele has kindly put together a few immune boosting foods and health tips to get us going. You can find more information on the Four Seasons Cookery Academy Facebook page. Tip 1. Jumbo Oats topped with Berries and a small drizzling of local Honey will keep blood sugars stable for hours. Tip 2. Please, please take a supplement from now until March at least. Even more important now. Go for a top strength tablet or spray. Many of us are low in Vitamin D, even with the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed. Tip 3. At the first sign of a cold/sore throat, make our tried & tested ‘potion’. 1/2 tsp Turmeric mixed into a paste with half a squeezed lemon and a drizzle of (preferably local) honey. Add enough hot water to make a ‘shot’ and down the hatch! Take 3 shots per day. Tip 4. Sweet potatoes contain your full daily need of Vitamin A and a third of your vitamin C requirements. Delicious baked, they will also keep your blood sugars stable. Tip 5. Garlic not only strengthens the immune system, but also has antibacterial properties. Tip 6. Vitamin C is essential for a strong immune system. Our body doesn’t store or produce it so include a variety of items daily, such as oranges and orange juice, peppers, kiwi fruit, broccoli, blackcurrants, strawberries and bananas. Tip 7. Green tea - rich in antioxidants - substances that can slow - or prevent - damage to our cells. Try to have 2 cups a day. The mint flavoured one is lovely. Tip 8. Dark Chocolate (+70%) is superb for our immune system. It contains iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, zinc and selenium - alongside being a powerful antioxidant. Melt a few squares into hot milk to make a delicious - and nutritious - hot chocolate. Tip 9. Kiwi fruit has a packed list of nutrients. Exciting studies are starting to show that 5 per week can reduce asthma induced wheezing. Wow! Tip 10. WELLBEING...... we have all been sorely ‘tested’ this year and this lowers our immune systems for sure. Talk to family/friends about how you’re feeling; exercise and try to take each day as it comes. 2
Another month has passed, and our summer was extended with some beautiful sunny days in September. As I write this the sun is still shining but there is now a definite nip in the air both early in the morning and late in the evening showing us that Autumn is here. Autumn is a great season and I always use the time to have a good clear out when putting away the summer clothes and bringing out jumpers and boots. The island is a great place for autumnal walks, and we get to see the countryside change with the season. This is also the time of year when you need to give yourself a health check to get you through the next few months. As well as Covid hanging around, now is also the time when colds, coughs and flu viruses are looking for their next victims. On page 2 you will find some top tips on how you can help yourself and boost your immune system from local Nutritionist Michele Newton. Inside you will find the regular news reports and some interesting feature articles and advertisers. On pages 10 and 11 you will find the puzzle section, which is great for keeping your brain active especially while the nights are drawing in. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I hope you all keep safe and well and I look forward to catching up with you again next month and in the meantime if you have any news you would like to share please do not hesitate to get in touch.

First Covid-19 Compliant - Following all Government Guidelines 3
St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk The Parish Council would like to thank businesses and residents for their continued observance of the guidance that has been provided during the pandemic, and for the support of the community for the helpline service provided via the Isle of Wight Council Hub (phone 823600), and Community Action website.
Plans are also in place to work with Partner Councils to provide administrative support until the next election, with a new Parish Council being able to review options going forward – this has secured savings for the Council, as well as increased capacity, which is important during the Covid restrictions.
Some additional work has been completed on the Duver public toilets, improving the facilities in the accessible toilet, in addition to the investment earlier in the season– with additional signage outlining Covid-19 guidance for public safety.
The Isle of Wight Council has re-opened the playground on the Green, and users are reminded to follow the guidance on the notices at the park – the notices highlight actions to keep all users safe: members are considering options to protect the Greens with specific options being developed for later this year/early 2021,
There has been incidents of anti-social fly-tipping and littering at the Duver, and nearby locations, with the Parish Council monitoring incidents and taking appropriate action: new recycling bins were commissioned previously, with frequent collections, as well as working with National Trust, Nodes Point and Baywatch providing additional bins and collections. Plans are in place to review arrangements for 2021 and working with Island Roads and other agencies to ensure best value and most effective locations.
Thanks also to all involved with the local school, as students returned last month, the work undertaken to make the facilities, and learning environment, as safe as possible is appreciated by families and the local community, and hopefully students will be able to be involved, albeit remotely, in the heritage trail project: discussions are also in place regarding what event/ commemoration , within the guidance, can be undertaken to commemorate Remembrance Day in November.
The Parish Council are continuing to work with the Community Centre to arrange Covid Safe meetings, within guidance and capacity limits, and appreciate their efforts to enable groups to return: the recent vacancy on the Council will now be filled following the 2021 Local Council elections.
Work on the Heritage Trail is continuing, and research is being undertaken to produce a local history film, capturing the memories and moments of the area, with anecdotes and eyewitness accounts of key events and local happenings – it’s hoped this will be completed in the Autumn/ Winter.

She allowed me to see that my passions were elsewhere and opened my mind to the possibilities ahead of me. I changed my path and have never looked back. Grade II Listed K1 Telephone Box Restoration The telephone box was installed in the early 1920’s and is believed to be the last surviving K1 box still in daily use. As a ‘building of special historic or architectural interest’, this K1 telephone box was listed on 6th August 1986 by Lord Elton, the Environment Minister of the day, giving it Grade II status. This telephone box is the property of Bembridge Parish Council and the telephone equipment remains the property of BT. Grant funding was obtained from the Eastwight Landscape Partnership for the restoration and after some delays due to Covid, works began in June 2020. These works included repairing the door & all window frames, new glass, clearing off all old paint and repainting with heritage paints, all carried out by local tradesmen. Parish Lengthsmen and Village Partnership Group members were involved with cleaning the box, the surrounding area 8
and publicising the restoration. Works were completed in September 2020, and Bembridge residents and tourists will benefit from the restoration and continued service of the telephone box, whilst saving a small piece of history for the Village and Country. Thank you to George Archer, Duncan Spite, Richard Buckley Decorators, East Wight Landscape Partnership and the Village Partnership for preserving this iconic Bembridge landmark.
CCTV at Steyne Park and Parish Office A new CCTV system is being installed at Steyne Park and outside the Parish Office, 5 Foreland Road in September.

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk Councillor Michael Murwill @cllrmurwill UK Government Consultation – Planning for the Future I believe this is one of the most critical consultations that the UK Government have put forward to the public. It is our chance as individuals (and councils) to have our say. If the government is successful with its reforms, we could see the housing target for the Isle of Wight double to approximately 1,100 new properties per year. You can find the consultation document at: https://www.gov.uk/government/ consultations/planning-for-the-future This consultation will close at 23.45 on Thursday 29th October 2020 Responses can be submitted: 1) On-line (using the above website) or 2) Email to planningforthefuture@ communities.gov.uk or 3) Write to: Planning for the Future Consultation Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government 3rd Floor, Fry Building 2 Marsham Street London SW1P 4DF

Coronavirus update Anyone displaying symptoms of coronavirus, no matter how mild, should book a free test immediately by either calling 119 or visiting NHS.uk Residents on the Island should NOT travel to the mainland testing sites when symptomatic. If the requesting system only offers a mainland testing site, you should either try again early the next day to book a test on the Island or request a home test. The coronavirus testing centre for the Island is based at Newclose County Cricket Ground, Blackwater Road, Blackwater, PO30 3BE. Isle of Wight Council tips Good news. The Island’s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) at Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh, now accept kerbside general waste. The booking system remains in place to maintain effective social distancing measures to protect staff and visitors. Bookings can be made online at: www. iwight.com/hwrcbooking Most items can be recycled rather than being in the general waste and a recent study revealed more than half of general waste dumped at the tip could have been recycled. continued over the page

It’s Good to Have Them Back… It’s great to see the re-opening of The Friends of St Mary’s Hospital Shop. This wonderful community venture touches the lives of many. All the money they raise through the dedicated work of their volunteers is ploughed back into the hospital, buying vital equipment for patients and professionals. It’s been a tough year so far for the Friends, not just with Covid-19 but at the beginning of the year they were relocated from their prime position and had to basically start again. They may have been dealt a blow, but they have bounced back with even more determination. Their new shop is just past reception on the ground floor and not far from the main entrance to the Hospital. Over the years they have raised over £1.5 million and they want to keep building on this and desperately need your help. Please support them by using the shop at the hospital which is stocked full of goodies to tempt you - gifts, cards, news and snacks. They have not been able to re-open their cafes in outpatients, the Ryde Wellbeing Clinic and the Laidlaw Centre as Covid-19 has made this impossible for now. Their ward trolley service which also brought a smile to patients faces has also ceased operating and this has impacted hard on everyone. The staff and volunteers always remain positive and they hope that some time in the future they will be serving you tea and coffee again. They look forward to welcoming you into the shop and please support where you can. You can also donate via the many collection boxes across the island. They have supported St Mary’s staff and patients for 32 years now and with your help they can keep on doing that for another 32!
