Welcome to the September issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe we are here already as it only feels like a couple of weeks ago that summer started. We have some beautiful landscapes on the Island and there’s nothing better than a field of hay bales, wheat or sweetcorn. Just travel less than five minutes from any town centre and you will be in the midst of the countryside with fields of all varying colours and crops.
text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931
No doubt like me you have noticed the tractors, trailers and balers out in force going backwards and forwards at all hours of the day while they frantically work to harvest the crops.
facebook.com/islandmagazines
I’ve always had a keen liking for tractors so I don’t mind coming across them on the roads. I always add extra time to my journey at this time of the year and rather than stress I can relax and enjoy the views over some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country.

West Wight Pet Lifeline West Wight Pet Lifeline, based in Freshwater, not only provides an emergency service for lost, stray or unattended pets in distress across the West Wight area, they also offer an island wide response service for certain types of wildlife casualties, these being the larger or more dangerous species that the public would not be expected to handle, such as foxes, badgers and swans. Recent calls that the group have been involved with include the trapping, neutering and return/rehoming of a colony of stray cats around Golden Hill Fort, with four adults and six kittens all having been taken into care over the last few weeks. They have also been involved with searching for lost dogs, scanning found dogs for microchips and reuniting them with their owners and attending seriously sick and injured stray cats in need of immediate veterinary care. Wildlife tasks in the last few weeks have included calls to badgers involved in road traffic accidents, injured fox cubs from Lake and Cowes, several different jobs involving injured swans and ducks at Freshwater, Ryde, Newtown and Sandown and calls to other birds ranging from a poorly cormorant to a woodpigeon stuck behind a fireplace. Their shop and information centre is located on Avenue Road in Freshwater and they’re always happy to meet people and tell them more about the work they do. You can also follow them on Facebook and, for all emergencies, call them on 01983 717740.

Handmade and bespoke are two words that describe some of the beautiful jewellery made by I.H. Jewellery. Based locally, owner Ian found his passion for jewellery making back in 1996 and then spent a few years obtaining diplomas in fine jewellery and stone setting. Ian works mainly in silver but commissions can be produced in 9 and 18 carat gold. He has thrown out the theory that handmade is far too expensive and has made some eye catching silver stud earrings starting at just £16. These will make beautiful gifts for that special someone and throughout his collection of handmade lockets, pendants and rings you will find affordable pieces to suit all budgets. He believes everyone should be able to wear beautiful jewellery and his online shop is open to everyone to browse to look for that perfect piece and if you have a particular item or idea you would like lovingly created then a phone call to Ian is a must. Visit the website at www.ihjewellery.co.uk and see for yourself the outstanding range and quality of products Ian has created. Please also see his main advert for more information.

News Report from Cllr Brian Tyndall Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. Tel: 07922 565940 E: brian.tyndall@iow.gov.uk The recent good news is the major investment of £48 million by the Government into St Mary’s Hospital. Maggie Oldham, the Trust’s Chief Executive has said: “I would like to thank our local MP, Bob Seely, for all of his support and for working so hard to get the Isle of Wight the recognition it deserves at Westminster”. The Isle of Wight NHS will be working with the Conservative administration at County Hall to “use this boost to ensure our services are sustainable for future generations”. In addition to this during Boris Johnson’s recent visit to the Island he indicated his support for a fairer funding settlement – the so-called Island Deal. He said: “I think it’s right that given what we have, for instance in some of the Scottish Islands, that we should look at doing something like that for people living on the Isle of Wight as well.” The outcome of the Funding Review will be announced later this year – but is this based on evidence given to the Government that living on the Island adds approximately £6 million pounds to its overall costs? The Isle of Wight Council is also introducing a new Homelessness Strategy in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017. This is called Housing First and is an approach that offers permanent, affordable housing as quickly as possible for individuals experiencing homelessness. This is run by council’s Housing Options team, who working with other local agencies, will look to meet the homelessness challenge.
8
The scheme is guided by the belief that people need basic necessities like food and a safe place to live so that they are better able to move forward with their lives if they are first housed. This new approach by the Homeless team has already had some successes and it has achieved its target that no families with children being housed in Bed and Breakfast accommodation other than for a minimum period. Personally I still work and represent all residents and organisations in the Brading, St Helens and Bembridge Ward; supporting both individual residents as well as liaising with the local Town and Parish Councils.

My name is Chris and I am the owner of Ryde Reg Garden Maintenance Services and I have been tending gardens for the last 6 months on the Island and before that in London. I studied for my RHS and City Guilds qualifications while working in Whitehall which was no mean feat! I have a love of gardening from working with my Grandfather who was a good friend of Percy Thrower, who those of a certain age will remember! I am experienced in all aspects of horticulture; lawn maintenance, hedging, weeding, pruning and planting out and topiary (I don’t do hard landscaping, fencing etc.). I may not be the quickest gardener, but what I may lack in speed I make up for in knowledge, quality and thoroughness. I am not a slash and burn merchant and always turn up when I am supposed to! No job is too small. Feel free to call me on 07747615567 for a friendly chat about how I can help you. 9

St Helens Parish Council
Phone: 07563 130185 | E-mail: clerk@sthelensiw.org.uk Following a busy Summer, lead members of the Parish Council have been taking forward projects that have been prioritised by local residents. Members spoke at the recent IW Council Planning Meeting regarding Planning Proposals for Guildford Park, highlighting the major concerns of local residents, as well as the implications for Highways and Traffic within the village; and have also commented on the need to recognise the particular characteristics of the Village, as highlighted on the Parish’s submission on the Isle of Wight Draft Plan, with members continuing to monitor the situation. The Parish Council have also made progress with the Heritage Trail, involving the local school and historical association, and local residents have allowed the use of the Parish Map, which highlights the major features of the Village – this work will continue in the Autumn with Down to the Coast Partners. A postcard of the Old Church, Fort and Pill Box has been produced, with the local school, and plans are in hand to develop this project for next year. Following continuing support from residents, the installation of a defibrillator at the Duver is in hand, and funded by savings made by the Parish in the previous and current financial year – it is hoped to provide a training session for Spring 2020, as part of the package.
12
The Duver project is developing, already regular mechanical beach cleaning is being undertaken and well received, alongside larger recycling rubbish bins – the project will look at options for the Old Church Green for 2020, working with partners and the local school. The Parish is actively participating in discussions about the Fort Walk ‘Happening’, recognising that, probably due to social media, there has been a growth in the numbers taking part, and we welcome working with Statutory agencies to address the serious concerns that the Parish has. Meetings have also been planned regarding the future of Station Road Toilets, with options coming to the September Meeting, and much is dependent on the decision of Defra regarding IW Council’s proposal to deregulate part of the Green. There is a Public Engagement event arranged by Southern Water between 10.30am and 15.30pm on Tuesday 3rd September 2019, on the Car Park next to the Green. The next meeting of the Parish Council is on Monday 9th September 2019, when options for the future of Station Road Toilets will be considered. St Helens Parish Council would like to thank residents for their support and comments over recent months, and hope they have a safe and enjoyable summer.
Feline Welfare Isle of Wight
Registered Charity: 1084722
Feline Welfare have lots of adorable guests staying with them and all these gorgeous cats are looking for love and a place to call home. They range from 12 weeks up to 13 years of age and they all deserve safe, genuine homes with people who REALLY care. Some have had a sad start to their lives so will need time, patience and understanding, but even those who are timid initially learn to trust you and will be WONDERFUL pets. Here are just a few of the really special ones that want you to pick up the phone and call so you can come and meet them. Call anytime on 521778 For more in-depth information about each cat you can visit their website www.felinewelfareiow.co.uk. If you are unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help please consider making a donation to them in order that they can keep doing the good work that they do. You will find all the info on the website. Sylvester has had a tough start to his little life, but he is surprisingly confident all things considered. He is used to being with a large group of cats so would like to go to a home with one or two friendly felines. He will be timid initially but with love, patience and time he will become your friend for life. Vinnie is a mainly white boy and is 13 years young. He is a loving boy and needs a caring home in a safe area. He has always been a single pet and would like to keep it this way as he wants his own personal 'human slave’. He is very affectionate and just LOVES human company. He recently had surgery to remove part of his ear flap. He has recovered well and is raring to go !!!! Rupert (tabby/white) is 6 years old and he is very affectionate. He does get on with other cats but he may well take over his humans lock, stock and barrel, so more than one lap is essential!!! Rupert is such a contented boy and wants a home to call his own.
Garfield is looking for a loving, safe new home with someone who really cares. He is 9 years young and he needs a home as an only pet. He has recently had a tough time but he is still happy and content with life and has plenty of love to give.
Meet Lloyd (black/white) and Harry (white/black). These gorgeous boys are 2 years old and they are looking for a loving home where they can stay together. They are neutered and vaccinated and really are ready to start their new life in a safe and loving home. They are REALLY affectionate boys and will make gorgeous pets for their new ‘parents’ or should we say ‘human slaves’ !!!! 13
