Welcome to the September issue which marks a special day for Island Magazines. You can find out more on page 6. I don’t think anyone can say we haven’t had a summer - at the time of writing this we have just come out of a heatwave and I like many others are thankful for the drop in temperature. It was at such an unbearable level but like with many things this year we got through it!!!

text or call Island Magazines on 07880 587 931 islandmagazines@gmail.com www.islandmagazines.co.uk facebook.com/islandmagazines

I always rave about the wonderful scenic views and the countryside on the island. Just a five-minute trip out of any town centre and you will be greeted by fields and countryside of varying shades from the recently sown to the just harvested.

I like nothing more than watching the tractors and machinery working the land, there is something calming about watching them cut, dry, turn and bale hay. I know some people do not like being behind tractors and trailers on the road but I think they are a great sight to see and at the end of the day they are only doing their job like we all are. This month’s issue is packed with news and information. I am always happy to receive emails and phone calls from readers and if you have anything to share with others please feel free to get in touch. I hope you all enjoy reading this issue and thank you to all advertisers, contributors and readers for supporting Island Magazines. I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Electric Charging Point - Bembridge Parish Council is delighted to announce the completion of Project Pod, the first public highway installation on the island of a new state of the art Dual Electric Vehicle Charging Point called Suki-Dean. The new Pod is situated outside the Parish Office in Foreland Road, Bembridge which is conveniently located just a one-minute walk to the village centre. Although this facility is provided for everyone, it is envisaged that it will be mostly used by those visiting from the mainland where they can park in the dedicated charging bay, spend a couple of hours having a spot of lunch and perhaps do a bit of shopping in the High Street. The Pod has already proven popular even whilst waiting for the bay marking to be implemented (now complete). For further information on the Pod, how to access it, charging tariff and availability, please download the Pod-Point or Plugshare app from Google Play (Android devices) or your App Store (IOS devices) VJ Day Socially Distanced Flag Raising - The Union Flag was raised in the War Memorial Garden on Saturday 15th August to celebrate 75th Anniversary of VJ Day. Due to the Covid situation no large celebrations could be organised, but a small group gathered in the War 4

Memorial Garden observing a two-minute silence at 11am before the flag was raised and wreaths laid. Beach Cleans - A very hot beach clean took place on 8th August with socially distanced volunteers starting at Lane End slipway and The Point, participants logging their details with the Parish Office prior to the clean. Refreshments at the Harbour View were most welcomed! Bembridge Friendship Circle Bags and Tea Towels - These are being sold to raise funds for a new community mini bus. They can be bought from the Parish Office on Foreland Road. Large Tote bags are ÂŁ6 each and small tote bags and tea towels are ÂŁ5 each

The September issue marks Island Magazines 10th Anniversary and never in my wildest dreams did I think back in 2010 that it would grow from just the one area to seven, covering pretty much the whole of the Island. The very first area was East Cowes & Whippingham and this was because at the time it was my hometown and had a real community feel. It was so well received amongst residents that I launched the Cowes, Gurnard & Northwood area in November 2011. 2012 was a very busy year and this was the year Island Magazines really stood out and a further three areas were added, Sandown & Shanklin launched in February, Ryde & Wootton in July and finally in October 2012 Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth. These five areas kept me very busy for the next couple of years and then I started to receive requests from Newport residents asking if I was going to be producing a magazine for their area? How could I refuse... and Newport & Carisbrooke was launched in April 2014. Fast forward 4 years until September 2018 and the Bembridge & St Helens area was launched. There is real community spirit in these two villages and as this is what the magazine is all about it, it was only natural that this area would become the seventh area to be added to the family. I am lucky that I can say I love my job; I love what the magazine has become and how it has taken shape. When I sit down and think about the people involved each month it’s quite astonishing... Firstly, you have myself, all the wonderful advertisers, news contributors which are made up of Councillors and Parish/Town Councils, some of them I have been working with since the start, then the team of printers who print and pack it every month and then all the wonderful distributors who kindly allow me to fly in and out of their premises every month (now wearing a mask) and deliver a pile to them which they kindly display ready for the thousands of readers who come and pick up a copy to take home and read. THIS SIZE ADVERT Without them all playing their part there really wouldn’t be a local community COULD BE magazine and we all work together like YOURS FOR JUST £13 well-oiled cogs. For more info email I hope everyone is looking forward to the next 10 years of Island Magazines, as I know I am! 6

News Report from Cllr Michael Murwill - Member for Brading, St Helens and Bembridge. T: 07754 463040 E: michael.murwill@iow.gov.uk Councillor Michael Murwill @cllrmurwill During my regular walks around Bembridge it is good to see how well the businesses have adapted and acclimatised to the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are so lucky to live on such a beautiful island and especially when 2020 is officially all about the “staycation”; we have everything we need right on the doorstep. The only remaining windmill on the Isle of Wight, the RNLI station, Bembridge Harbour, a designated site of special scientific interest, the beautiful views from Culver Down and the variety of shops in the village. These are some of the reasons why I am very proud to represent Bembridge within County Hall. I know some residents are concerned about holiday makers coming to the Island, it is the responsibility of everyone to play their part to keep us all safe. In this time of lovely weather this also includes residents and visitors keeping safe on the beaches, in the sea and ensuring that no litter is left behind. Following hot on the news that the final leg of the 2022 Tour of Britain is to be held on the Island; it has now been announced that the Diamond Races is due to take place in October 2021 and looks set to be yet another global event that will attract people to the Island and promote us as a key venue. The race is developed by the Isle of Wight Council in partnership with leading motorcycle experts and is increasing the Islands global 8

footprint on attracting people to visit us and bring their businesses and staff to the Island. The Council is also celebrating being shortlisted in two categories at the MRW National Recycling Awards 2020. The first nomination is for the ‘Campaign of the Year - Up to £20K’: This relates to the excellent communications campaign to improve recycling at holiday lets across the Island. The second category is for ‘Public/Private sector category for Partnership Excellence’ Both categories are a recognition of the hard work of Island residents in recycling waste and the work done by the Council officers and Amey. I hope that you continue to keep safe and healthy. Should you need help, please telephone the IWC Coronavirus helpline 01983 823 600 or, for the latest Government advice, please visit the IWC Coronavirus website: https://www.iow.gov.uk/Council/ OtherServices/Public-Health-CoronavirusCOVID-19/Advice1 Island residents can also access mental health support and advice online at www. iwmentalhealth.co.uk Meetings To ensure safety, meetings continue to be held virtually via Microsoft Teams. continued over the page

120 years of Isle of Wight retailing comes to an end Beardsalls has been a household name on the Isle of Wight since 1901. Their first retail shop started on Shanklin Esplanade by John Beardsall. This family business has waxed and waned over the years, through 2 World Wars, storms, floods and numerous recessions. The retailer has always developed it’s offering to match the times, but now alas, with the advent of internet shopping and the near total collapse of high street business due to the Covid pandemic the time has come to shut its retail doors for ever. Four generations of the Beardsalls family have been custodians of the business. John’s son Bernard inherited the Esplanade shop upon his death and soon expanded into another unit in Regent Street, Shanklin, quickly becoming the Island’s very first ‘lending Library’. Bernard’s premature death meant that his widow and youngest son, Michael took over the reins and were soon joined by Mike’s wife Iris and his elder brother Peter. The shop expanded taking on new premises in Ventnor and developing the range of goods to include books, greeting cards and photocopy services. In 1999 Michael’s son Toby joined the team and further expanded into Ryde, Sandown and Newport. Toby Beardsall says “We have been on an exciting journey with Beardsalls. Some of our long standing loyal customers who dealt with my parents in the 60’s and 70’s have supported us through good times and bad, but now we must move on and develop a new business for the modern age” Beardsalls move into printing has enabled them to build on the heritage of the Beardsalls brand, maintaining the core belief of great customer service. Its Print Studio in Orchard Street, Newport opened in 2018 and will remain open and continue to develop services as Beardsalls has always done in the past. Printing is done on site and ranges from wrapping and signwriting vans to printing the magazine that you are reading now. Beardsalls retail may be gone, but the name should not be forgotten. 10

Putting the Needs of Children First Jigsaw Family Support is a community based; small charitable organisation on the Island. They are a child focused organisation but work with all family members and extended family to provide a safe, stable and happy living environment during and following the separation and divorce of parents and other life changing issues. Their services include supervised and supported contacts as well as handovers, DNA testing, mediation, family counselling, workshops and parent/child support groups. Their team is made up of committed professionals with years of experience and cover a wide range of services. They are recognised by the courts, social services and all national agencies and have enhanced NACCC accreditation and can provide a safe, caring, and relaxed environment where non-resident parents can spend time with their children on a regular basis. Many parents who use the services of Jigsaw Family Support have lost the ability to communicate with their partner and have trouble agreeing on what’s best for their children. The range of issues they can help with include relationship breakdown, child protection concerns, mental and physical health problems, drug and alcohol misuse, housing issues, debt, poverty, court issues (now legal aid has stopped), contact issues and domestic violence. There is a small fee applied when using their services but Jigsaw Family Support understand that families on low income and those experiencing financial difficulties during this unusual time may find this an added stress and are therefore willing to accept donations. They understand the number one priority is the children and providing a safe community haven with professional help to guide the family through the difficult times is their main aim. During lockdown many of us took to our gardens and enjoyed the pleasure of growing a variety of plants, veg and fruit. One plant that was really popular with both adults and children was the humble sunflower. You don’t have to go far to see one of these cheery plants peering over the hedge or fence.

These wonderful flowers can reach heights of up to 12ft with heads bigger than your hands, unless of course you are growing the dwarf variety which has a height of about 2ft. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone’s (or your) day. Young sunflowers track the sun, also referred to as heliotropism. A young sunflower’s face follows the sun from sunrise (east) to sunset (west) every day and repeats the cycle until maturity. As sunflowers reach maturity, it behaves differently. The overall growth of the plant slows down gradually, the circadian rhythm (their internal biological clock) ensures that the plant reacts more strongly to sunlight early in the morning than the afternoon or evening. A mature sunflower does not move with the sun throughout the day; rather, it just faces east. I feel that during lockdown the island experienced a ‘sunflower boom’… we have another few months to wait to see if a ‘baby boom’ also occurred!!!!! 15
