elcome to the September issue of Island Magazines and as you know I always like to give a little mention about the weather...
In this last month alone, we have had a heat wave that at times was unbearable and we’ve also had monsoon season with serious flooding across the Island. To say it’s been unpredictable is an understatement. Let’s see what September brings us! It seems that almost everyday somebody is being scammed and we have teamed up with IWASP (Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership) to bring you the latest scams that are doing the ‘rounds’. There are some unscrupulous criminals trying every possible way to get people to part with their money. On page 12 you can find some of the latest scams reported to Trading Standards. In this issue you will find the regular news reports for your area and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 & 15 will keep you informed of local and community events happening across the Island. If you have an event coming up, please feel free to send us the details via any of the means below. We have some great advertisers and as always please support them as it’s been a rough 18 months for many local businesses. I hope you have a great September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month

ISLE OF WIGHT
Tractors…. For the past couple of years, the front cover of the September issue has been reserved for anything tractor themed! Two reasons for this… since a very young age I have always had a love of tractors and secondly when you live on an island, during harvesting season, you are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or dare I mention it stuck behind one in traffic.

I have recently moved from my central rural location at Arreton and must admit I miss seeing the tractors, trailers and all manner of agricultural machinery passing my window. Thankfully, I have been able to satisfy my fix of tractors by tuning into the much talked after TV show, Clarkson’s Farm. When this was first brought to my attention I ummed and ahhed about watching it as I was no Jeremy Clarkson fan… However, I can be the first to admit I was wrong, and this is probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time. I take my hat off to farmers across the nation as I have learnt so much about farming, more than I could ever have imagined, much of this is thanks to Clarkson’s side kick, experienced young farmer Kaleb Cooper who also brought the show to life. I won’t ruin it by telling you anything more. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video and I rate it ‘ten thumbs up’.

News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com Cllr Jonathan Bacon In my role as lead Councillor for Heritage and Environment and Waste I have recently been working on the Isle of Wight Council’s Climate Change Strategy. This is timely given that in recent weeks we have all witnessed the effects of Climate Change with the various extreme weather events that have been taking place. We have also seen the recent report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which makes it clear that the actions of humans are directly linked to these events. The Strategy comes before the Isle of Wight Council Cabinet in September when I hope it will be adopted and the Action Plan that sits alongside can be put into effect. As well as being part of steps we must all take, the Strategy will form part of our programme of maintaining and supporting our natural environment, which is so important to the Isle of Wight, both as part of what makes our island special but also as part of our attraction as a tourist destination. In my last report, I spoke about the new Island Plan and the aim to better control development so as to protect life on the island. The Climate Change Strategy sits alongside that aim and together with our recently acquired status as a UNESCO Biosphere will gives us a stronger basis for a better sustainable green future rather than becoming another Government building site, which is something none of us who love the Island want. The recent bad weather has also shown up deficiencies in the way our water system on the Island works and is managed. Our water infrastructure is old, and it seems that elements of it are no longer fit for purpose. The escape of sewage onto some of our
beaches has shown that the system can only cope with so much. It is also of note that we import much of our water from the mainland. The system seems to be failing us at both ends of the scale. However, the water system on the Island is under the control of Southern Water, which is a private company. As a result of this, and perhaps surprisingly to some, the Council has little control over our water system. Nevertheless, we are going to do what we can to take a case to Southern Water in order to try and achieve some action to minimise the chances of this sort of thing happening again. By the time you read this we will have met with senior managers from Southern Water who we are summoning to the Island. Local Southern Water managers and other related bodies, such as the Environment Agency, are also being asked to attend Council Scrutiny Meetings with the aim of finding out why we are experiencing such severe problems and what can and will be done to resolve them. Alongside these big issues I am actively dealing with local day to day concerns that residents wish to raise with me. If you have an issue that you think I may be able to help, please contact me at any time. I always respond to messages and am always happy to come to speak to you. My contact details are above or alternatively you can come to speak to me at one of my surgeries, the next few of which take place as follows: Brading Community Centre 21st September and 19th October, both at 10am St Helens Pavilion 7th September and 5th October, both at 10am

Trading Standards have some more scams for you to be aware of. Residents have reported scams from the following – • A call from someone claiming to be from TV insurance, stating that their insurance had expired and it needed to be renewed. They claimed the resident owed £180 but they didn’t have any insurance and had recently changed their television. The caller then insisted that they needed to pay and they couldn’t pay in instalments, they went as far as to demand they use a credit card, go overdrawn or borrow money from a friend. Luckily the resident reported this to a trusted contact who confirmed that this was definitely a SCAM. • We have received reports of callers ringing residents to say that they want to check their meters, implying they are from SSE. On checking the number online there are large numbers of complaints about it. If in doubt check with SSE to confirm if the call is genuine • Action Fraud has received over 700 reports from members of the public about fake emails purporting to be from the NHS. The emails claim to be able to provide people with a “digital passport” that “proves you have been vaccinated against COVID-19”. These emails are fake, and the links within them lead to genuine-looking websites that steal your personal and financial information. Remember, the vaccine is free of charge. At no point will you be asked to pay. • Emails have been received purporting to be from the HMRC stating ‘ if you do not reply to this email with the details required, you will not be eligible for any refunds from HMRC’ – this is a SCAM and legitimate organisations will never contact you in this way. You can check if a phone number is a scam – put the number that called you into google and select the website who-called.co.uk this will tell you if the number is definitely or likely to be a scam and quite often others who have received it will comment on their experience.
