Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue and I can’t quite believe where this last month has gone! Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere, with bursts of colour from daffodils, crocuses and spring flowers on hedges and banks all around the Island. The Island is coming alive again and many tourist attractions will be opening their doors as the Easter seasons begins. There are a variety of events happening across the Island during April, and you will find details of these on pages 12 and 13. As the weather is getting warmer and whilst many people are taking this opportunity to sit and relax in the sun please can I urge you to read the article on page 19 to ensure you stay in the best of health.

PAUL FULLER - INDEPENDENT ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCILLOR FOR COWES WEST & GURNARD PUTTING YOUR NEEDS FIRST
About Me - I am 48, married to Karen and have two children. I was raised in Gurnard, attended local schools and returned to Cowes because I wanted to give my family the same opportunities I had growing up.
My Track Record - I have 14 years’ experience as an Independent Isle of Wight Councillor, representing our Cowes and Gurnard community since 2009. Since 2001 I’ve been a local Town/ Parish Councillor, serving Cowes Town and Gurnard and Northwood Parish Councils.
Being Independent - I consistently defend the need for our Councils to put our communities first. I have no activists, sponsors or businesses scrutinising me, so my loyalty to represent Cowes & Gurnard first is absolute. I have no political party to hide behind. If I get things wrong, I’m directly accountable to residents. Because of my political impartiality residents/ stakeholders are happy to work alongside and trust me, Transparency - I write and deliver newsletters (and listen to feedback!) for residents affected by issues in their area. I write monthly reports for local magazines whilst, Annual Reports are delivered to all residents.
Making Myself Available - I am contactable 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I aim to respond to ‘local’ calls within 12 hours. I meet residents at their Standards - One complaint, is one too convenience- not mine! I’m the only IW many. If I get something wrong, I will rectify Councillor to hold weekly surgeries. These this... are held in 8 Cowes & Gurnard venues. If Re-elected, My Priority and My Enthusiasm - In the last 8 years, I’ve Promise - To be an effective, visible attended more IW Council summoned and hardworking Councillor. If privileged meetings, than any other Councillor. I’ve to be re-elected, I promise to continue attend Gurnard Parish Council and Cowes representing our community in County Hall, Town Council monthly meetings. This rather than County Hall in our community. enables me to relay resident’s concerns As Councillor, I will not fob residents off, and informs me of local issues. I do this and will continue to be conscientious and because I enjoy it. I hope this shows and I ‘hands-on’ fighting for our community, achieve the right outcomes! wherever and whenever necessary. Inclusiveness - After 8 years, I’ve built a strong network of residents supporting me with their knowledge and expertise. I have 25 years’ experience working alongside Officers, businesses, community groups & outside agencies, and enjoy a positive relationship with our M.P and Councillors from all political backgrounds.

A Feathered Friend
The last few issues we have had the pleasure of sharing pictures on the front cover from some local talented amateur photographers and this months issue is no exception. The fabulous front cover picture was taken at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve by Viki Taylor who has been very lucky to get regular close up photos of these feathered friends as well as the red squirrels who are also frequent visitors. Viki is Island born but lived away for a while, returning in 2011. As well as having a love for fur and feather Viki has a passion for landscapes, seascapes and event photography such as Round the Island Race, Cowes Week and air displays, particularly if the Red arrows are involved. Viki’s husband rides trial bikes and she has become the unofficial Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club photographer, spending weekends (sometimes in the mud) capturing the riders as they manoeuvre through the courses.

Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) 1 handful dessicated Coconut www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. But by reducing the fat content in this dish by using Olive Oil – Monosaturate - and only a little at that and using Turkey which is one of the healthiest meats available – and less expensive than Chicken. We have used a low fat version of Crème Fraiche to add at the end instead of Cream and we’ve also added Apples and Onions in the recipe as well as part of our FIVE A DAY. Instead of accompanying the Curry with fat laden Naan bread, try brushing a Wholemeal Pitta Bread with a little Garlic Olive Oil and placing in a hot oven for a few minutes. 14

LORA PEACEY WILCOX Cowes Medina Ward
Your LOCAL and VOCAL candidate My family have been traced back in Cowes to 1761, so far! I attended the local schools in Cowes, and a resident in Medina Ward for 47 years. I became a Town Councillor in 1999, and was proud to be MAYOR for two years. I was elected as an IW Councillor in 2004. I retired early from my business to concentrate on ward work. As many of you will know, I have been involved with numerous voluntary groups within Cowes for many years, ranging from youth groups to the cemetery! I am married with two daughters and have two little dogs, Prada and Hugo Boss.
YOUR concerns are MY priorities
KEEPING YOU INFORMED
PARKING – or rather lack of it! Is it legal or not? Who is responsible for enforcing? DISABILITY – I receive many calls from residents about elderly relatives who can no longer manage in their own homes. I am here to guide you through the process. DOG FOULING – A number of you would have seen me cleaning up after other people’s dogs! If I don’t have a pooh bag handy I am able to call to have it cleaned by Island roads. SPEEDING – I regularly go out on speed watch This is to confirm whether there are issues with speeding in the area. SCHOOLS- I have been working with local schools to make them safer for the children and residents.
I NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO CONTINUE FIGHTING ON YOUR BEHALF.
I write each month for Cowes Magazine (available from various local shops and online at www.cowesmagazine.co.uk) and when permitted in The Beacon. I hope you have found them useful. I regularly call the local radio stations to keep them updated on current issues as they arise. I also report to Cowes Town Council each month. Cowes Medina consists of 1987 properties and has 3015 electors. I apologise if I have not met with you personally, as I have tried to meet as many of you as possible.
If you would like to meet or speak with me, then please get in touch as I DO value and need your views! Please call me on: 01983 645765 or email me: Lora08@sky.com
PLEASE come out and VOTE FOR ME ON Thursday 4th May. (see you at the Polling Station. Scout Hut, Smithards Lane)
Thank you, Lora. Promoted by Lora Peacey Wilcox, 29 Pallance Road, Cowes, PO31 8LW
News Report from Independent Isle of Wight Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Elections - Please note the very last date to register is 13th April 2017. As Councillor I will be seeking the privilege of being reelected and true to form it is my intention to canvass at every address. If you do not wish me to disturb you during the coming weeks, please let me know. Alternatively, please call me if you miss me!! Coastal Footpath - It has been necessary to close the coastal path linking Gurnard to Thorness. This is due to a landslip occurring. Council Tax to increase by 5% - As a result of making further savings, the IW Council agreed to increase Council Tax by 4.99%. The alternative Independent budget I supported, proposed a 4% increase. Independent proposals were legally set and spent less capital on County Hall, would increase financial support for Rights Of Way, Planning Enforcement, investment in Beach Huts, whilst freezing Floating Bridge charges. Highways Matters - I’ve been asked to contact Island Roads regarding the configuration of the junction where Cockleton Lane meets Pallance Road. Please let me know your thoughts on this! In the meantime, Princes Esplanade and Egypt Esplanade was resurfaced last month, and I cannot thank Island Roads enough for the support provided to residents of Briary Court through the advance notice given! Continuing to watch this space, I’ve had it confirmed and reconfirmed Parklands Avenue will be reconstructed in April. Grateful thanks to Cowes Town Council colleagues who have supported in full 16
suggestions for Traffic Regulation Orders. Cowes Post Office - At the time of writing The Post Office has advised that the Temporary facility at Cowes will close 6pm, Tuesday 25th April. The new Post Office will be relocated to the Co-op at 155 Mill Hill Road, Cowes on 1pm, Friday 19th May. The Post Office advises that although ‘the decision has already been made to move the Cowes branch’, a 6 week ‘consultation’ will take place on the suitability of the new location, particularly: · Are the premises easy for you to get into, and is the inside easily accessible? · Do you have any concerns about the new location? · If so, do you have any suggestions that the Post Office could make it better for you? · Any local community issues which you think could be affected by the proposed move? · Anything you particularly think about the change? This consultation takes place until 11th April. If participating online via the: www. postoffice.views.co.uk, please enter the branch code: 19592599. You can also comment by: email to comments@ postoffice.co.uk or through the customer helpline: 03457 22 33 44, Textphone: 03457 22 33 55 and by post to freepost Comments, Post Office Ltd. On this matter all four Cowes Councillors (and the MP) have voiced their concerns over the length of the closure, and the fact the new Post Office is not centrally located and accessible to the Town Centre for both residents and businesses.
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller Stick and Flick… Dog Poo in the Countryside. Many thanks to residents who have contacted me concerning dog fouling and this initiative which has gained the support from some landowners on stick and flick disposal. This view was opposed by both the Country Landowners Association and farmers. In light of this the Local Access Forum has agreed good practice is for dog walkers bagging their dog mess up and taking the poo home or to the nearest dog bin for disposal. Planning Matters - I have been approached by residents of Marine View Close, Baring Road, Albert Road and Woodvale Close concerning current Planning applications. I also understand that it is unlikely for the Planning Application, adjacent to Dottens Farm will be considered within the term of this Council. Elsewhere, within the Planning Committee a reconvened meeting took place to reconsider decisions concerning Red Funnel proposals at East Cowes (which I supported) and proposals for 80 new dwellings Westridge Farm (which I had concerns about). On both applications Officers implemented a callin, as reasons given by members to refuse applications were considered unsustainable. Promoted by Paul Fuller, 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it...
Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk 19
SPRING FORWARD WITH YOGA by Judith Didham
Spring is just about with us now! The signs are all around us. Change is definitely on its way! As in nature, this is often the time of year when we instigate new changes in our lives. For some of us, the New Year’s resolutions we made are now dim and distant memories! I don’t make them myself; the timing always seems wrong – however, Spring seems to be a perfect time to embrace new changes and remind ourselves of how important it is to look after ourselves and Yoga is a wonderful way to do that.

Yoga combines stretching our bodies, correct breathing and deep relaxation. It can also improve our flexibility, bring us a sense of peace and calm, and help increase our overall wellbeing.
