Welcome to the April issue. I’m not sure where to start this month, but feel that I have to mention the Coronavirus outbreak that seems to be the only topic in the news at the moment. It’s a very unpredictable time with nobody really knowing how this is going to pan out. We must continue good hand hygiene and just take it one day at a time. Now on to something positive... whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining and I have washing on the line and it seems to be drying. Let’s hope this is a sign of what is to come. Easter is just around the corner and there are many Easter themed events happening across the Island. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section can be found on pages 10, 11 and 12. Please note with the ongoing issues around Coronavirus some of the listed events may be subject to change. This month’s issue is once again packed with news and information along with some great features and advertisers. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox LARGE VANS/CAMPER VANS: I had reports of large vehicles parking in pretty unsafe areas around Cowes, particularly on bends and close to the edge of junctions, causing other users to have to cross the white line and into oncoming traffic. The police have been informed, if its you - please be more considerate to other road users! ANONYMOUS: You have no idea how much I understand what you are saying. I have asked Age UK IW to work on the issue - and they are. Please give me a call or make contact; I am happy to come and see you! ANCESTORS?: Would you like to know more about yours (or not!!) Not Gone… Just Relocated! Visitors to the hospital will have noticed that The Friends of St Mary’s have moved from the foyer cafe at the main entrance to make way for a commercial outlet. The new Friends’ cafe is now located in the north end of the hospital, next to the Outpatients Department. Although it is “very much smaller” the volunteers are staying positive. Chairman, Lesley Myland says “it all feels a bit strange at the moment for the cafe not to be in the foyer, but we are determined to carry on serving patients, visitors and hospital staff with our cafes, the twice daily trolley service to the wards, and from our brand new shop. As you know, every penny of profit we make goes to assisting the hospital to buy equipment which makes patient and staff experiences better. Please keep supporting us as you always have so that we can build on the £1.5 million we have already raised in recent years. The new shop is bigger and we are improving our range of refreshments, cards and gifts. We are in a better position now too, as we open directly on to the main corridor opposite the reception area at the front of the hospital. So that has been an exciting challenge”. You can still find the Friends serving refreshments at the Laidlaw Day Hospital and now at their new location. You will find their usual good coffee or tea, sandwiches, toasted teacakes, a variety of snacks and newspapers. And of course the usual warm welcome and good service they have been providing for 32 years at St Mary’s. Don’t forget that they are also in the Ryde Wellbeing Centre.

Lose Weight Without Going Hungry Slimming World Consultant Wendy, who lost over 2.5 stone with Slimming World, knows what it’s like to be unhappy with your weight. Wendy says: “More than two-thirds of the adult population are overweight”. “Lots of people want to lose weight but they often don’t know how or where to turn for help. When members come to my group they tell me that they’ve tried losing weight before and it hasn’t worked so they feel like failures. I reassure them that it isn’t them who failed but the programme they followed, usually because the diet was too strict or because they didn’t get the right support, but members in our Cowes group have lost 65 and a half stone since January”.

Conveyancing O Wills & Probate Lasting Powers of Attorney “You kept us fully and clearly informed throughout. You were exceptionally responsive and very proactive on our behalf. The best experience we have ever had from a lawyer when buying a property.” Mr and Mrs A.

Slimming World members follow the club’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to make small, easy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat so they make healthier choices and lose weight without ever going hungry or feeling deprived. Each week, as well as weighing in to log their progress, members are motivated for the week ahead by sharing recipes, advice and ideas for coping with challenges. Wendy says: “I know the thought of joining a group can be daunting, especially when you don’t feel very confident, but everyone’s welcome and we have a lot of fun”. If you’d like to find out more, go along to the Cowes group, which meets every Thursday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Cowes Primary School or visit www.slimmingworld.com or call Wendy on 07745451899.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Baring Road Planning Applications. Ref: 19/01578/FUL and 20/00188/FUL - I have called-in both parallel applications (the first for 6 dwellings, the second for 4) on fields between Greenacres and the Farm Bungalow. This is due to the fact that any development will close the green gap between Cowes and Gurnard, is outside the settlement boundary and that development would have an adverse impact upon the landscape characteristics of the Jordan Valley.

Bucklers View Update. Ref: 19/00080/FUL - A meeting between Southern Housing and Bucklers View Residents was intended to take place to address concerns over drainage at the site, as well as a hands up on the proposals to extend. In speaking to Southern Housing, I understand that construction will not commence within six months. Therefore, it seems very unlikely that information sharing/ public meeting will not take place until contractors have been procured and a traffic management is in place in draft form. A conference call with officers is due to take place with officers early next month.

Westview Road. Ref: 20/00145/FUL - A further application has been received to create a further ‘residential’ dwelling on agricultural land west of Rew Street. This application is in the countryside, and although ‘prior approval’, was given for Rolls Hill/ Road - A meeting took place residential use of a barn nearby, this is a brand new proposal in an area outside the between residents, the Police and Island Roads to discuss concerns over speeding settlement boundary. traffic using Rolls Hill and Roads Hill Road. Floodlighting, 3G Pitch Cowes Enterprise College - I continue to receive feedback from residents of Ward Avenue and Baring Road over floodlighting, noise and loss of amenity/ privacy. On this, a meeting has been arranged with Environmental Health for advice. One thing that I have noted is the lack of landscaping and screening which was part of the original approval in 2010. From my perspective, this was a key reason for me not objecting, and I have expressed concerns over this.

Following the speed being monitored and in light of average speeds being in excess of 50mph, I am supporting calls for an ‘Emergency Speed Limit’ being in force during the improvements works at St Mary’s junction. On this, I am attempting to arrange a meeting with IW Council Officers, Councillors and residents. Sail GP - Following the first meeting, follow up meetings will take place, whilst updates will take place by email. It was reported that this year there will be no grandstand, whilst an official ticketed area will be in place opposite the New Holmwood Hotel.

Public Spaces Protection Order Consultation - The IW Council are consulting on the above, following initial concerns over access to dogs. The consultation continues until the 15th April Since the meeting Sail GP have met with and can be found at: https://www.iow.gov. Cowes Week Ltd and Island Roads and are working towards a ‘cohesive traffic uk/council/OtherServices/EnvironmentOfficers/Public-Spaces-Protection-Order continued over the page

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued management plan’, which will be developed ahead of this month’s meeting. In addition, progress is being made for a park and ride ‘Sail Bus’. The feasibility of this is being evaluated. Place Road - With houses being built on Place Road, I have been asked for consideration being made to reduce the speed limit to 30mph. On this, before I proceed please let me know your thoughts! Also within Place Road, I continue to chase up the promised Pedestrian Refuge for the Range. I have received confirmation that the tree lost in storms on the grass verge opposite Deauville Drive last October will be replaced in the coming weeks. In addition I’m told that discussions have taken place between the developer of Meadow View and residents following boundary hedges being removed. The developer has advised planners that ‘boundaries and screening will be improved in the long term’… Cowes/ Gurnard Car Parking Charges To raise more revenue, the IW Council are pursuing proposals to charge for parking on Cowes/ Gurnard Seafront. I am totally opposed to these unpopular proposals, particularly given the cost of maintenance and the impact that this will have upon established and new businesses. Despite myself and my group putting alternative budget proposals forward, Councillors from the ruling group agreed to forge ahead with the suggestion. In light of their decision, I am advised that the statutory consultation will take placeHowever timescales have to be agreed.
