Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines and thank you for picking up a copy. The year is slowly moving ahead and at the time of writing this we are following a Government roadmap which will gradually bring us out of ‘lockdown’ and let’s hope in the months to come we can start seeing a return to normal life pre-covid. Easter is early this year with Good Friday on the second of April and Easter Sunday on the fourth. I hope we are lucky weather wise and have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors accompanied with a good dose of sunshine. It might even be a chance for either the first picnic or barbecue of the year. This is also a great time to relax and get stuck into our puzzle section on pages 16 and 17. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have launched a new ‘Waste of Space’ public appeal and need your help to turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. See page 13 for more information. If you never want to miss out reading ‘your local community magazine’ you can now subscribe to either our printed or digital subscription each month and you can find more details on page 5.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox EASTER: I love this time of year. I always feel it gives hope that the dark, cold days are behind us! Try to enjoy this special time. We are blessed with such beauty on our Island. COVID CARDS: A number of you attended your jab but did not receive a CARD. I have contacted NHS/CCG and am awaiting a response. I will update you. NHS DENTIST: I have had meetings with MP, NHS and others regarding the lack of NHS dentists available, not just in Cowes but across the Island. There IS an issue with recruitment and retention to the Island. I hope after years of making the ‘powers that be’ aware, something can finally be achieved. It is simply NOT good enough. PARKING CHARGES Gurnard/Cowes: Seriously? This is a very short-term gain financially. The health implications both physical and mental far outweigh the finance. I will continue to work with Cllr Paul Fuller to fight against the charges. WALKING ON ROADS: Was I the last generation to be told to walk FACING the cars? Too often I see people walking on the opposite side. If you can’t see the traffic, they cannot see you. Please stay safe. FLOATING BRIDGE: I will continue to raise my concerns over the issues with FB6. We need a solution for an efficient and consistent crossing across the river. (I am VERY concerned about side thrusters as a solution). BERYL SCOOTERS: Should only be used on the road or cycle lanes. You must be over 6
age 16 and have a UK or provisional driving licence. Remove headphones and EarPods. You MUST NOT ride on pavements or use indoors, use another person’s driving licence or use another beryl account. Ride under the influence of drink or drugs. Avoid roads with speed limits of over 30MPH and avoid weaving through traffic. COVID- RETURNING TO ’normal’: For many elderly and vulnerable residents this is going to be REALLY difficult. Please give people SPACE. Please give people TIME. A small amount of consideration goes a long way. IN NEED OF HELP: Whatever you think, or feel cannot be helped……IT CAN! Please do not sit and suffer. Call our wonderful, amazing people at Citizens Advice on the Island. 0800 1448848 seriously, they can help with ANY issue you are worried about, and they have contacts for all organisations to assist. ASK FOR HELP! ELECTION MAY 6TH: If you are worried about leaving home, contact me and I will arrange postal votes to be sent to you. You have until 5pm Tues 20th April to apply. All people wishing to VOTE (unsure if you’re registered) have until midnight 19th April. As always you are my extra eyes and ears. Please keep in touch: lora08@sky.com or 01983 645765

Although Island Magazines has no political agenda, we thought it only fair to make space available to all candidates to advertise their campaigns (should they wish to). Not all candidates took up the offer but for those who did we have produced a handy section for you to pull out and keep.

Please vote LORA PEACEY WILCOX INDEPENDENT Hello! My name is Lora, I live locally and I will again stand for re-election in the Isle of Wight Council elections on Thursday 6th May 2021. This matters in YOUR area! Local councils are the buffer between the government and real people. Being INDEPENDENT gives me the chance to challenge political parties & hold them to account. Currently, one party has had power at local level to satisfy their political masters – if you vote for me I will fight for everything that is GOOD for the Island, not just to satisfy the government! We decide how or when toilets are open, schools are funded, roads are properly maintained or where parking facilities are placed or charged for. These are the things that matter locally, where I was born and bred. I care about issues that affect us all, for our children, residents and older neighbours. All these things can & should be done at LOCAL level, where I’ve fought to benefit Cowes for many years. I chaired the team who built the amazing £½million Sea Cadet Unit; helped to halt the ever increasing double yellow line blitz in Cowes; I keep up the fight against dogfouling, a total bugbear that needs to be thwarted. Every vote (including postal) counts – yours could make the difference. We’re fighting these issues:
Reverse the ridiculous parking charges Focus on housing options for our young in Gurnard, which may cost more than people LOCALLY; they bring; Support efficient accessible pharmacy, Ensure our schools are properly funded and LOCAL; dental and GP provision; Improve on the provision of suitable housing & accessibility for disabled residents, which is in high demand;
Keep our amazing young people interested in Cowes, with the prospect of a LOCAL decent job to aim for;
Find ways to revive our high street with thriving businesses
Maintain LOCAL play parks & open spaces for all to enjoy freely;
I am “Lora - LOCAL & VOCAL”. A vote for me will mean I can carry on fighting to keep Cowes Medina alive & well for all of our families for a long time to come. You can find my summary of actions each month in the Island Magazines & Beacon. I can be contacted by email at any time for you to raise issues that need my help. If I can’t I usually know where to get that help for you and will act as quickly as possible. YOU are my eyes and ears – highlight LOCAL problems & together we can find ways to address them. I need your vote to be able to continue the fight to support Cowes Medina, because I care! Tel: 01983 645765

PAUL FULLER – INDEPENDENT ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCILLOR FOR COWES WEST & GURNARD PUTTING YOUR NEEDS FIRST ABOUT ME: I am married to Karen, and have two grown up children Caelan and Zara. I was raised in Gurnard, and my family has lived in Cowes for generations. MY TRACK RECORD: 2021 is my 26th year as an Independent Councillor, representing Cowes West and Gurnard as County Councillor since 2009. In addition, I’ve served as a Parish Councillor for Gurnard and Northwood and as a Town Councillor since 2001. In the last 4 years, I have relayed/resolved over 5,000 enquiries. BEING INDEPENDENT: It is important for Council’s to listen to and put our communities first. I have no activists, businesses, sponsors or leaders following me, so my loyalty to represent Cowes and Gurnard first is absolute. If I get things wrong, I am directly accountable to you! INCLUSIVENESS: In my 26 years as Councillor, I have built up a strong network of residents who act as my eyes and ears who support me with their knowledge, skills and expertise. BEING TRANSPARENT: I write monthly reports through my website and for local magazines. I deliver Annual Reports to all Cowes West and Gurnard households, this is to ensure all residents are updated on campaigns on their behalf.
IF RE-ELECTED MY PRIORITY AND PROMISE: To be an effective, visible and hardworking Councillor. If privileged to be re-elected, I promise to continue representing our Community at County Hall, rather than County Hall in our community. As a Councillor I will not fob residents off, and will continue to be conscientious and hands-on fighting for our community. The reason why I do this, is because I thoroughly enjoy it. I hope it shows and I continue to achieve the right outcomes! YOUR CONCERNS: MY RESPONSE. • Scrapping Cowes/ Gurnard Seafront Car Park Fees. • Reducing the 1045 Annual housing figure for the Isle of Wight. • Prioritising Local Housing for Local People. • Supporting Working Families on low incomes. • Supporting plans to improve safety outside schools. • Improving access to free and low cost Town Centre Parking to regenerate towns. • Supporting an IW Council that is inclusive and acts on feedback. • Reviewing County Hall expenditure. • Ensuring that Government supports the extra costs needed to support the island.

Waste of Space Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust launch public appeal to help turn unloved spaces in our towns and cities into vital natural space for people and wildlife. Natural and wild places have provided a lifeline for people across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire over the past year, providing essential outside space to relax, exercise, play and spend time with friends and family. Access to these wild spaces and connection to nature is known to benefit people’s physical and mental health, leading to reductions in depression, anxiety and obesity and strengthening people’s immune systems. However, the pandemic has highlighted vast inequalities in access to green and natural spaces. One in eight households have no garden and rely entirely on public open spaces, particularly in urban areas. In a survey conducted by the Trust in June 2020, over 96% of people said that nature played an important role in relieving stress during lockdown and expressed a need for more natural space in our towns and cities. Urban wild spaces create healthier communities, reduce loneliness and social isolation and provide safe places for children to play. They also provide cleaner air, combat climate change, help reduce flooding and act as havens for wildlife as part of a county-wide Nature Recovery Network. The Trust is asking local people to map the ‘wasted space’ in their communities, the unloved scraps of land around our houses and streets that could, and should, do much more for people and nature. This could include tall buildings with the potential to have swift boxes on, paved over surfaces which could be filled with colourful planters or simply a space which needs a litter pick and a place to sit to transform it. The Trust want local people to help find creative ways to make space for nature within our towns and cities. Debbie Tann, CEO of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “Wildlife has been squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces just at the time when people need nature more than ever for their health and wellbeing. Our Wilder 2030 campaign is calling for 30% of land and sea to be restored for nature by 2030, and for people to join us in taking action for wildlife. This must be the decade of nature’s recovery and rewilding our lives. Any area, no matter how small, will contribute to a Nature Recovery Network, and help rewild where we live. This will help transform towns and cities into places where wildlife can thrive and people are happier and healthier.” “Our Wilder Communities Officers, will provide support and advice, including how to talk to your local council, ways to identify what wildlife might already be living in your community, and how to make a space that benefits people and wildlife. We’ll also be engaging with local councils and landowners to get their support so they can work together with communities to make changes which create better urban spaces for everyone.” Together we can rewild where we live. News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Cowes Enterprise College. Families have contacted me concerning the fact that children have not been accepted into the college despite this being their firstchoice school. From experience, I know many families consider Cowes Enterprise College to feature on the pathway from the four Cowes primary schools. I’ve spoken to the Cabinet Member who advises that schools outside Cowes are not as popular as they were, and as a consequence more local families wish to send children to Cowes College instead. Due to fewer children on the Island, the College consulted with parents on reducing the roll from 270 to 210. In the discussion with the Cabinet Member, I am advised that should the College increase their role for September, this could be at a risk for the school. That said, there as always is positive dialogue with the College to resolve issues. In the meantime, I am supporting a number of appeals being made by parents. Cowes/ Gurnard Seafront Car Parking Update. The fight to scrap current Council’s Cabinet proposals to charge to park on Gurnard/ Cowes Seafront continues. Gurnard Parish Council has met and remains in dialogue with the IW Council, whilst Gurnard Sailing Club has requested to meet with Council Leaders. In addition, I’m told that legal action continues, whilst approaches have even been made to the local Conservative Association! 18
Notwithstanding this the Council seems adamant to install meters prior to May. Mornington Car Park. Following concerns raised, the IW Council has no plans to sell Mornington Road Car Park to a developer. Baring Road. Following my request being approved, proposals against the development of 6 dwellings opposite the junction of Crossfield Avenue, will be determined by Planning Committee. What is important and will underpin my opposition to the Committee, is the principle of development on one of three green field ‘Jordan Valley’ sites separating Gurnard from Cowes. This was very much a golden strand of Gurnard’s Neighbourhood Plan and very much needs defending in respect to our Plan. Gurnard Green. With the onset of warmer weather, please can I appeal that when bins are close to being full, residents place rubbish in an emptier bin nearby, or take their rubbish home. This follows foxes retrieving and scattering food waste nearby in advance of collections. This is a huge bug bear for residents nearby and in the meantime will continue to be monitored.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued IW Council Budget: 2021/2 Both myself and others put forward amendments to this year’s budget. These included taking money from speed cameras (£300,000), IT Equipment (£100,000), video conferencing (£30,000) and new vehicles (£150,000). On a personal basis, I had concerns over £500,000 allocated for County Hall maintenance and would prefer seeing extra support being prioritised to support families on low incomes. Coastal Protection.
Gurnard Coastal Path. Officers are hoping that with landowners’ support and with land drying out it may be possible to roll back the footpath following this winter’s landslip, east of Sticelett Farm. E-Scooters.
Five years on from being Executive Member for Planning and the Environment, proposals to upgrade Coastal Protection measures have been tentatively agreed by the Environment Agency. As part of the grant, at Full Council a commitment was required for the IW Council to ringfence £5.8m for schemes (some of which I trust will be used locally). Without that level of support from the IWC match funding from the EA (£34.8k) would not be available and would be spent elsewhere.
Thank you for feedback concerning e-scooters on pavements and being left in inappropriate locations. If you witness anything that causes concern please email Beryl (copying me in!), at: support@beryl.cc Promoted by Paul Fuller, 45 Oxford Street, Cowes, I.O.W. PO31 8PT.

If you witness a regular dog pooper, please let me know the times and location, and I will take this up with our Environment Officer and Island Roads.
