I always like to give a little mention about the weather, and all I have to say this month is wow.... it’s been hot!

Island Magazines Mailbox No 4, Unit B1 Whitecross Business Centre Whitecross Lane, Shanklin IOW, PO37 7EJ

The Island is getting busy and the calendar is full with local events and carnivals and you can find details of these on pages 12, 13 & 14. There is a lot of hard work from volunteers in the preparation of these events and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some or all of the carnivals that the various towns host. It’s what summer on the Isle of Wight is all about. I hope you all have a great August and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox A few enquiries and comments from residents. PARKING: I just wish someone would understand what a HUGE issue this is. I have tried getting double yellow lines reverted to single to free up parking spaces 6pm-8am. I am being blocked by Island roads stating the pavements or roads are not wide enough in most areas. PAVEMENT PARKING: An issue for pedestrians, pram users, partially sighted, and wheelchair/ mobility users. However, a necessity for people living in roads without adequate parking. We are told different things by different people. The police say, it is permitted PROVIDING access is maintained for those needing access as mentioned above. NEWPORT ROAD: I have once again received complaints about drivers too impatient to wait 40-90 seconds (time yourself) and instead mount the pavement between Stephenson junction and the nursing home. I am being requested to put bollards up along that stretch. I am pleased that Island Roads have put down same markings as before... and not the controversial ones that were advertised a few years back. I was ‘on the case!’ Meanwhile, thanks for your patience during the essential works done in the evenings to avoid horrendous disruption. MEDICAL CENTRE: Apparently there have been ’numerous’ occasions that cars have been mounting the pavement in this area; particularly dangerous with a pedestrian crossing and a lot of frail people using. REALLY? is your journey time that important to injure someone?? Meanwhile, PLEASE be patient with the staff there. They are all completely stretched with an issue that is nationally facing our country - shortage of 4

doctors and nurses. You would not believe some of the stories of how people speak and behave, not to mention the hideous requests to see a doctor when the chemist would do! It would make your blood boil. AMEY RUBBISH BINS: The garden waste service has been really over subscribed! So much so, Amey are considering getting a second vehicle. Your garden waste IS NOT COLLECTED at the same time as the recycling bins. It’s a different vehicle and can take up till quite late to be emptied FLY TIPPING: Can you keep alert and contact me if you see it in your area...the council are saying its not an issue???!! COWES WEEK 2018 Sincere thanks to sponsors Lendy! Heres to a good one, enjoy and stay safe. KINGSTON ARMS: Many of you will know Jackie and Ade. For 26 years now they have been landlords at the pub. The ‘civic’ responsibility has BEEN TOTALLY EMBRACED by Jackie, who volunteers to do WAY ABOVE what she needs to for the local community. Many of our local charities would not have survived without the Kingstons’ hospitality and support. I Salute you two!! Thank you. ARCTIC CYCLE ROAD: By the time you read this, it will have THANKFULLY be resurfaced! Long over due (but not as much as Pelham). I did try to have works done overnight or with traffic lights, INSTEAD of the hassle going up and down smithards lane and the restrictions on arctic road. I DID TRY!! RED FUNNEL: Did you know they employ over 150 local people? I recently contacted them continued over the page

What’s happening in our area by Lora Peacey-Wilcox about putting up the LED signs (like Wightlink) have done. Would be good if they could link in with IWC and the floating bridge. Not to mention the local contractors who have been working on site, AND the wight shipyard employing lots of locals!

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Illness After falling ill in May, last month I was taken to hospital and diagnosed with encephalitis following a recent brain infection!. Apologies for not being accessible during this time, and my grateful thanks for the well wishes and support from residents and Councillors Peacey-Wilcox, Nicholson and Bertie for stepping in... Following medical advice, whereby I only now understand how serious my illness was, I need to focus on my recovery, as I’ve had to relearn to walk, reboot my body and communicate. This means that until 4th September hopefully (or when back to ‘normal’), I’ll be working one day each week this will coincide with revised surgeries. Until then, I can only deal with Isle of Wight Council issues dealing with Cowes West and Gurnard, and Parish/ Town Council issues relating to Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood. If I’m not your local councillor, please visit: www.iwight.com/councillor/findCouncillors. If your issues relate to my role as a magistrate, please call 01983 525100. Island Roads Westwood Close. An approach has been made to me to provide access between Westwood Close and King James’ Close. This has been strongly opposed by local residents.

ownership and is not a right of way. Because of ongoing ‘antisocial behaviour’, residents of this private lane can restrict access. Park Road. I’ve again approached officers to request a safe pedestrian access to schools and the Crossfield Estate. Cold Calling and Scams Many thanks again to officers and Gurnard Church for facilitating the two Trading Standards Cold Calling and Scamming Events at Coffee and Chat. Please let me know if (like residents of Westwood Close) scams, cold calling or poor workmanship is a problem! Bonfires If you are considering having a bonfire during the beautiful summer weather, please let your neighbours know. This continues to be a problem for residents that live in valleys and dips in land where smoke lingers. In the meantime my leaflet advising what the law says can be accessed on line by visiting: http://paulfullercc.blogspot. com/2010/09/bonfires.html, whilst hard copies of the original leaflet are available from Cowes Library and Gurnard Press.

Also this month: · I have supported two households concerning Council Tax enquiries. · I have forwarded a helicopter landing enquiry. · I continue to chase up various Planning Enforcement enquiries I have received an enquiry dealing with Woodvale Drive. Please note this lane linking · a vehicular access issue over a right of way. Woodvale Road to Jordan Close is in private Place Road. Island Roads has approved drawings, and Planners advise they are await lawyers to approve proposals under Section 278/38 of the Road Traffic Act. I have asked for officers to chase this!
