Well Hello There…
SOS Flat Roofing
All I can say about this month’s front cover picture is WOW… I’m sure you will all agree with me that the photo is stunning and is all thanks to local photographer Tara Harvey. Tara knows the secret to such a great shot is waiting patiently while building a trust with the subject. Her patience certainly paid off and she was rewarded with some stunning poses from not just this fox but the whole family.
When Tara isn’t waiting patiently for the perfect photo she is kept busy with her daytime job as a ‘super seamstress’, Contact Lui Tel: 520522 where she does alterations to wedding Mob: 07795 363 534 dresses and also every day wear such as shortening trousers, skirts or adjusting www.primotechnical.co.uk the fit on a piece of clothing. Hello and welcome to the August issue of Island Magazines. It’s hard to believe that over half the year has passed already and I think 2020 is certainly going to be a year no one will ever forget! I would like to thank everyone that got in touch to comment how nice it was to see us back in print. Your kind words mean a lot and thank you for supporting your local community magazine. Lockdown has been a busy time for local charity Feline Welfare who were inundated with homeless and stray cats and new kittens. Nikki and her team of foster parents have been kept on their toes ensuring the cats have stayed safe during this period but the time has come to find forever homes for many of them. Our article on page 8 features just a few of the ones ready to move on and they are eagerly waiting by the phone ready for you to call and meet them. On the subject of animals, don’t you think the front cover picture is amazing? We are lucky to have so many talented photographers on the island and you can find the story behind this months star on page 2. This month we have included a rather unusual recipe. Some of you will already be avid fans but some many never of heard of it - check out page 14 and let us know what you think.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox HARBOUR COMMISSION MERGER: As you may have heard the Cowes Harbour Commission are considering becoming a charity with the Cowes Yacht Haven. I have raised my personal concerns over the power hold they will have on the area. The public access. The transparency over financing and transparency over actions being taken, i.e. not being TOLD about their decisions but being able to help and raise any concerns before they happen. cowesharbourcommission.co.uk/ consultation and cowesyachthaven.com/ news. PLACE PLAN URGENT: WE NEED 300 people from Cowes and Northwood to help us. The two following links work. FB page: https://www.facebook.com/ TheCowesandNorthwoodPlacePlan and https://arc-consulting.co.uk/cn-place-plan/ I cannot stress enough the importance of taking 20 mins out to do this. You can be brief, skip bits you’re not sure of, but seriously this can help rebuild Cowes and give CLEAR direction. MEDICATION: If you have been having your medication delivered due to shielding; please be aware that it may stop for some of you. Please ask at the pharmacy for details of how you can find other ways from August onwards. The government were paying for the service but as we come out of lockdown, that will change. Boots do a service for £55.00 for a years worth of deliveries. £5.00 one off delivery. PLEASE start thinking about what you need now, and start asking questions. 4
DOG POO: What is the matter with some people. No, it is NOT acceptable to let a dog poo in the forest (because it will rot down) or near a river/ sea (because it will wash out) CLEAN UP after your dog; its a small price to pay the for companionship and love they give you. Whoever you are in Northwood, who allows their medium-large dog to foul along Nodes Road regularly and in the field I am on the watch!! Also, Northwood Cemetery, WHAT type of person allows their large dog to run off and foul on graves?? I have people on the lookout. I am absolutely LIVID. HEDGE TRIMMING: Nearly time to be allowed to cut them back. PLEASE if you live on a bend or junction GET THE HEDGE CUT BACK. To allow pedestrians and car users alike to be able to move safely. AND its an awful lot easier to maintain in the long run. One big cut and then maintenance. THANKS to all those that have listened and done this. WIGHT PROMS: Sadly, unable to go ahead, however, there will be a virtual series of online concerts, including opera and musical theatre, arts workshops for children. Register on Wight Proms website: www.wightproms.co.uk (you never know who might pop up on the screen!!!!) ISLE HELP: WOW what a magnificent website to help so many of us. Blown away! https://islehelp.me from eviction, dementia, housing, finance, bailiffs, this site can help you. continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail. Watersedge Café - I have been in dialogue with the café owners following concerns raised over their ability to trade.
Toilets, Gurnard Green - A number of delays occurred before the newly refurbished toilets could be formally handed back to Gurnard Parish Council last month. This followed a number of snagging matters that had to take place before the formal handover from contractors.
In response I have contacted Parks and Beaches, the Planning Department, Licensing and Regeneration hoping that all outstanding matters can be resolved to support the Café. From feedback that I’ve received from Officers there remains a Although there has been comments solid commitment to support the café, their concerning the fact the toilets are now owners and staff. chargeable (20p), the general consensus is that the wait was worthwhile, and although Little Gloster - A very big thank you and charges are not ideal, most residents best wishes to the lovely Ben, Holly and would prefer paying a small nominal fee to young Uffa Cooke of the Little Gloster safeguard the toilets for the future. who are moving on to exciting pastures new from September. Coronavirus Updates - A number of residents have contacted me concerning social distancing markings which appeared in Town Centres in advance of 4th July. As I understand, the funding for this work came from Central Government to remind residents of the (then) 2m social distancing advice, whilst markings are intended to fade during the next few months. With respect to updated guidance, I continue to update my website with evolving advice and timescales. 12
Police Matters - I continue to receive feedback concerning ‘social gatherings’. In liaison with the police, I’ve been asked to suggest residents report all crime related incidents to the police via their website: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/ro/ report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/ In the meantime, the police ask that residents keep doors and outside storage units secure following opportunistic burglaries which take place during the summer. continued over the page

Please note the prohibition order in place applies to all ‘vehicles’ without any exemption for cyclists. To note, signs denoting this are legal, and although Cowes Town Council Following their response to my request for wanted signs to specify ‘no cycles’, these the resumed service, I was advised that ‘Red would not be lawful or enforceable. Cloud Bread Like many others I have recently ‘tweaked’ my diet and one of the main things I’ve given up/cut down on is carbs but one thingt I am really missing is bread. On my quest to find an alternative that wasn’t carb loaded I came across ‘cloud bread’, duly named for it’s light fluffy texture. I was promised it will satisfy my cravings without undoing any of the benefits I have already achieved. For those who don’t know, Cloud Bread is high in protein and extremely low in carbs, making it the perfect sandwich bread for those on a low carb, gluten free, or grain free diet. They take a bit of getting used to but are so easy to make and you can freeze them or keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Here is my simple tried and tested recipe. Ingredients 4oz cream cheese 3 egg yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 egg whites Salt and pepper Method Heat over to 150C/130C fan/gas2 and line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. In a large bowl whisk the egg whites with the baking powder using an electric whisk, until stiff peaks form. In another bowl whisk together the egg yolks and cream cheese until smooth, pale and frothy. Add salt and pepper. Next, fold the egg whites a spoonful at a time into the yolk mixture. Be as gentle as you can so you don’t knock out too much of the air. Carefully dollop the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets and gently spread into even 4 inch circles. If the mixture is a little runny when you get to the bottom of the bowl don’t use the last few spoonfuls - only use the fluffy mix on top. Makes approximately 6. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden in colour. Allow to cool for a few moments before carefully removing with a palette knife. 14
