I

Whilst writing this the sun is shining, the temperature is in the early to mid-20’s and it looks like Summer has arrived... but I am also aware that this can change at the drop of a hat and one part of the island may be enjoying the sun and yet another area at the same time can be taking shelter from the rain. s summer finally here???

We are very lucky to be surrounded by some amazing beaches that are just perfect for swimming and are ideal on those hot days when nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the sea, whether it’s just your big toe, up to your knees or are really brave and commits fully to the task in hand. Inside this issue you will find news, information, some great advertisers, the puzzle pages, our ‘dates for your diary’ section and much more. Our aim has always been to reach out to the community to share news and information and if you have community news you want to share, please get in touch with us via any of the means below. I hope you have a great August and get the chance to enjoy the freedom of meeting up with family and friends after such a long break and you get to enjoy our beautiful island which, come rain or shine, is one of the best places to live. Keep safe and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Traffic Orders - Thank you to everybody who provided feedback to recent Traffic Regulation Orders.

constituency whilst Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor forms the other.

Proposals to impose double yellow lines on the southern section of Princes Esplanade need to be re-advertised following our new Council’s abandonment of plans to impose parking meters on the seafront.

Jet Ski’s - The use of jet skis has been reported to the Marine Police, who I pleased to report have continued to monitor their use in waters frequented by bathers. Please note a local bye-law exists prohibiting ‘Personal Watercraft’ being used faster than 8 knots and in depths of less than 2 metres.

Island Plan Consultation - In my new role as Cabinet member for Planning and Housing, I am leading consultation on the new Island Plan (this is the Planning Bible for the Isle of Wight). The consultation will continue until 30th September and can be found here: https:// iow.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s3200/ Appendix%202.pdf The timescale has been extended until the end of September to allow Local Councils and residents to be engaged with the process, and for myself and Planners to go ‘out on the road’, to listen to feedback. Headlines for this second consultation is the reduced annual housing target from 1045 dwelling per annum to 486 dpa. Also of note is the removal of suggestions for West Wight Garden Villages. Isle of Wight Parliamentary Consultation - Whilst a strong advocate of the Island having two Members of Parliament, I have objected to proposals by the Boundary Commission to split both Newport and the Medina Valley. In my representation which can be found on my website, I suggested Cowes, East Cowes, Newport and West Wight form one 6

Please report incidents to: www.hampshire. police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-reporta-crime Parish/ Town Councils - Congratulations to Cllr Christine Bustin (elected to Gurnard PC), Cllrs. Alison Carter and Phil Sanders (elected to Cowes TC). Knowing that Christine, Alison and Phil have spent much of their lives actively supporting their communities, I very much look forward to work and supporting our new Councillors. Please note, Northwood Parish Council are also seeking new Councillors. If interested please contact: Parish Clerk, Barbara Herbert at: clerk@northwoodparishcouncil. org before 27th August. Speed watch - A very big thank you to Paul Taylor and his Speed watch volunteers who have been active in recent weeks in Pallance Road and Crossfield Avenue… Eventually, I am looking forward to joining the Team. Litter - Thank you to the numerous residents who volunteer to keep Gurnard Green and Beach pristine. Please can volunteers keep in touch with me (with continued over the page

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued photos if possible!), as otherwise the IW Council will not fully understand the massive issue with litter, given that volunteers are doing such a great job. E-Scooters - I arranged a meeting with officers and Councillors to discuss the issues with e-scooters in Cowes High Street following complaints of the carriage of passengers and the ongoing use by those without a license. During the meeting it was made clear the issue concerning enforcement of the prohibition to traffic using Shooters Hill and Cowes High Street applied to cyclists as well as e-scooterists. In response, I requested a rethink on painting signage on the road surface and publicity concerning restrictions. In the meantime, please report e-scooter incidents (please copy me in!) to the license operator, Beryl via: docs.google.com/ forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeXs1QOiFGEdafpz2 X7L8UccAbiS7XO4cy8FTqiuoRKmvNgw Q/viewform The trial is due to be extended to Sandown, Lake and Shanklin and continues until March 2022. Hedgerows - I have received requests for hedges to be trimmed back following this summer’s rain. In the nesting season trims are allowed to ensure walkways are kept free of brambles etc. In the meantime more substantial work can take place when the bird nesting season ends on 31st July. Also this month: • Local Shops and Pub signage continues to be called for at the Roundhouse junction to Gurnard

• I am in discussions with officers concerning motor vehicle electric charge points across the Island. • I have received a number of reports concerning anti-social behaviour and damage caused to the playground equipment on Gurnard Green. These have been reported to the IW Council, the police and Gurnard Parish Council to monitor. • If you are an owner of a high sided vehicle, please think about where you park your vehicle. Although it may not be illegal to park outside a residents home, it often leads to distress particularly when light and/or access is impeded. Please note if a householder feels the need to approach individuals it is often for good reason. • I continue to receive calls concerning the sale of Battery Copse between The Esplanade and Battery Road. To note this land is protected by tree preservation orders, is designated a SINC (a site of importance to nature conservation) and is well known for its dodgy land stability (hence the regular closure of the footpath!) • I have been in liaison with Island Roads concerning No Mow May, where grass verges are not cut. This has caused concerns, particularly in light of the backlog of cutting regimes. • Now that proposals to implement seafront charges have been scrapped, I am discussing options to create a permissive path connecting Gurnard Primary School with Princes Esplanade. • I have requested details over the Cowes Week Temporary Traffic Order. Once received this will be circulated to Cowes Town and Gurnard Parish Councils and should feature on my website.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox WEEDS IN GUTTERS: You may have noticed the prevalence of these as you walk around. The reason they are worse than ever is because due to pressure the IWC was requested not to use glyphosate in the normal way spraying by the quad bikes. Instead, 4 chaps are going around removing by hand……! ESCAPE ROOM (Aspire): Yes, first one on the Island and the first that is in an actual crypt! Please give this a go and support this amazing charity. Contact them direct: 01983 716020. www.aspireryde.org.uk FABULOUS PLANTS: At Men in Sheds and the Storeroom Cowes. Somerton Industrial Estate. SO CHEAP! Please support this very worthwhile charity. Lovely cacti too. SPEEDWATCH: I took part with others on Crossfield Ave. Quite a lot of people over and some well over speed limit. Another session booked for a couple of weeks’ time. All roads need to be certified safe that we can work from there. We can’t just rock up and do it anywhere! Sometimes, its perception of speed. Next one is in Place Road, after numerous concerns. ASTRAZENECA VACCINE: The Government has confirmed that no Covishield vaccines (manufactured in India) have been administered in the UK and that all AstraZeneca vaccines given in the UK appear on the NHS COVID Pass 10 10

as Vaxzevria (manufactured in Europe). Let’s hope this info from the NHS is correct! LOCKDOWN ENDS!: I know many of you are concerned about us coming out and removal of restrictions. For me, I will probably continue to wear a mask inside busy places like supermarkets; and I do hope they continue to have hand gel and disinfectant for trolleys! I always use these. Indeed, those businesses that continue with good hygiene will defo get my support. PLEASE be mindful of people who are extremely nervous at loss of restrictions. COVID: `Personal responsibility & Common sense’ - stay safe everyone. As always, you’re my extra eyes and ears: lora08@sky.com

Mountbatten are looking for new volunteers able to support patients, families, our shops and our staff across the Isle of Wight. When you ask most of our volunteers why they give up their time and energy to support Mountbatten’s work, most often they will say “to make a difference”. The demand for Mountbatten’s expert care and support is going to increase in the years ahead and that’s why we need your support.
