Rotary Shoebox Appeal

Thanks to a tremendous effort by schools, clubs and members of the Island Community the Island Rotary Clubs collected 2,438 shoeboxes together with an assortment of warm clothing which has all been loaded onto a lorry kindly provided by Steve Porter Transport and delivered to the mainland. From there the shoeboxes will be transported to Moldova to reach Rotary Clubs there for distribution to children in Moldavan communities in time for Christmas. Thank you everyone and we look forward to working with you next year! Rotarian Paul Wheeler

News Report from Independent Isle of Wight Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Cowes Medical Centre. With Cllrs Peacey-Wilcox and Nicholson I attended a meeting with managers at Cowes Medical Centre. Like other GP Surgeries nationally and islandwide, Cowes Medical Centre are finding it a real challenge to recruit doctors, following retirement. In response, the surgery has been successful in the appointment of Advance Nurse Practitioners to support the team at Cowes which has over 15,000 patients and is the largest GP practice on the Island. A further change that has occurred at the surgery, is that reception staff are to navigate calls to ensure that patients receive the best advice. In light of this, the Centre has asked that residents are patient and supportive as these new changes are rolled out.

Egypt Esplanade and the junction with Parklands Avenue in Park Road. It remains my intention to investigate the removal of surplus lines elsewhere. On this, a number of residents have forwarded suggestions which I’ve requested Town and Parish councillors to consider, prior to meeting with Island Roads in November. In the meantime, please let me know your thoughts! Place Road development. Many thanks again to those residents who responded to the request for ideas for street names. The road names shortlisted, in liaison with Gurnard Parish Council are: • • • • •

Cordelia Close. Jennys View. Mermaid Avenue. Spencers View. Sunset Close.

In the meantime, I’ve offered to support the Patients Support Group, and have made representations to the IW Council concerning better use of future developer contributions. In the meantime, I will keep residents updated Given feedback received, I’ve also added as to how these challenges are resolved in the Deauville Drive, given the number of requests months ahead. received to recognise Cowes’ Twin town. These suggestions are currently under consideration Parking Matters. by developers. Following residents feedback, I’ve formally asked for a review of double yellow lines. This follows requests being made for minor changes in Gurnard, (shared with Parish Councillors) at the junction of Baring Road and Cow Lane in Woodvale Road, the junction of Church Road and Worsley Road and on Marsh Road.

Solent Deal Update. Last month Full Council narrowly voted against the Solent Deal, which relates to the combined authority for the Isle of Wight, Southampton and Portsmouth.

At Executive following Full Council’s decision, the point was made that although the Council In Cowes, I’m hoping to work closely with Town may not be in favour of any final proposal, it Councillors for proposals at Crossfield Avenue, was important to remain at the table to help

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller negotiate the terms of the Solent Deal. Therefore the Isle of Wight Council’s Executive considered it important to remain involved.

What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox COWES SEA CADET ROYAL NAVY PARADE: Well done to everyone at TS Osborne on a brilliant exhibition of the achievements by our local youth. OIC Jacky de Bruyne and her small but dedicated team of staff do a tremendous job. If you have an hour to spare and would like to help out at the Unit then please contact me. SOUTHERN WATER HELP: As with all business’ money has to go a long way and as a business they have to prioritise where money is spent. WE CAN HELP by not putting any fat/oil/wipes/cotton buds/hair etc down the sinks and toilets; this would save many thousands of pounds, so money can go towards ensuring good clean water supply to our homes, or towards flood schemes… SOUTHERN WATER MAY BE ABLE TO HELP WITH: A medical condition that means you have to use extra water: contact SW on: 0800 0270800. OLD CEMENT WORKS ON RIVER MEDINA: The pictures on the recent gifttonature.org. uk are truly great. Do have a look and they are always looking for volunteers to help at sites across the Island.

LITERARY FESTIVAL: My thanks and congratulations to the ENTIRE TEAM that make this event happen. Once again an extraordinary amount of really top authors here in Cowes! COWES MEDICAL CENTRE: Due to a national shortage of GP’s, it is important for reception staff to ask brief details to assess if your needs can be met elsewhere in the medical centre, not necessarily with a GP. The surgery has over 15,000 patients. Cowes has been lucky to recruit a number of new Advanced Nurse Practitioners who are more than capable of dealing with a lot of complex issues. You will also have a MUCH better chance of being seen more quickly! CULVER DOWN ROAD: Is being strengthened and resurfaced by Island Roads. Please be patient if you have to go that way. AMEY WASTE CONTRACTORS: I recently visited the ‘tip’ and had a behind the scene tour. The WHOLE TEAM up there are doing a brilliant job. Well done to all of you who are separating your waste, it really does make all the difference.

IW FESTIVAL 2017 Dates announced 8-11th June.

The new vehicles they have are also fitted with Cycle Safe cameras, to make it safer for our cycle users.

COWES YOUTH CLUB SITE: UKSA are moving forward to leasing this site from the IW Council. The sports centre will be available to hire by the public within 6 months. I encourage you to get in touch with UKSA about hiring it!

STOPOVER: Its estimated 22,000 over 16’s smoke on the Island; of this 850 will be admitted to hospital (we only have 250 beds!!) and 115 will die from Smoking related illness’. If you need help and support in quitting contact: www.mylifefulllife.com

I took part in this survey; if you are computer smart I urge you to fill it in. The NHS is struggling nationally with the increase in obesity; we all need to try harder - Easier said than done!!

PASSPORT ONLINE SCAM: Again, same as above, there are a number of scam websites who claim to fill in your details, charge you £40.00+ and do not fill them out correctly. the .gov.uk websites are the correct ones. PARKING SEAVIEW ROAD: I have received a complaint about the number of cars parked in the area on a Sunday morning for football.
