It’s a Way of Life

REDLINE PLUMBING

When I first took the step to embrace and learn Local • Recommended • Reliable yoga I thought that I would be throwing myself into the ‘downward facing dog’ and ‘tree’ For all your plumbing needs positions, and working on ways to make me more supple, but as yet I haven’t tried these Call Graham Ivey on poses and I have now realised that there is so 07792 285936 much more to yoga than I first thought. If I had redlineplumbing45@gmail.com to compare it to anything I would have to say 77, St Mary’s Road, ‘an onion’ ... there are many layers to it and it is Cowes, PO31 7ST very versatile. This may sound like a cliché but yoga really is about physical and mental wellbeing and for now I am working more on breathing, stretching and meditating. The type of yoga I am learning is called Satyananda and is being taught by Nickie Short and each lesson is based around what I need at that present time which is why these one to one lessons are perfect for me but I am looking forward to getting to the stage when I am ready for some ‘traditional yoga poses’. Her weekly classes include posture, breathing, meditation and chanting and although the structure of the class is similar each week, the content takes you through a journey of progression and self-awareness. For more information and to see how Nickie can help you call her on 07799 032824 or visit her website www.yogaisleofwight.co.uk and see her main advert below.

Christmas Recycling Tour By Cllr Michael Murwill - Cabinet Member for Waste Management The IWC, in partnership with Amey, are undertaking a ‘Festive Reduce Reuse Recycle Tour’ around the Island during November and December to inform residents of what can be recycled over the Christmas period. Below are the venues during December: pop along and pick up a free recipe card and recycling booklet.

THIS ADVERT COULD BE YOURS FOR JUST £16 For more info email

islandmagazines@gmail.com or call 07880 587931

They would also like your views on waste and recycling services and an online survey is now open until January 4. It is an opportunity for householders to put forward suggestions for future improvements or ideas on how the Island can recycle more. The council is responsible for the collection, treatment and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island — which is delivered through a contract with Amey. The survey can be completed online by going to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/9Z5GBTY and paper versions are available at County Hall, libraries across the Island and council help centres. Once the closing date for the survey has passed, the information will be reviewed and used to identify possible improvements to the existing services.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Christmas!! My very best wishes that all residents have a fun filled and safe Christmas and a peaceful New Year. For me, this has been a really challenging year, and I am so appreciative of the very kind words, the patience and support that I have received following my illness during the summer. Thank you. Seafront Railings. The corrosion of the railings on the seafront between Cowes and Gurnard, is of concern to the IW Council following complaints raised last year. Because the estimated figure of replacement is so high the IW Council are not financially in a position to replace the railings.

replacement of the railings… Please let me know your views! Heat or Eat? Support from The Footprint Trust. The Footprint Trust offers free home visits to look for ways to reduce fuel and water costs. In some cases the charity can provide new cookers, fridges and washing machines to those in greatest need. The Footprint Trust, and advice offered can save households £100’s. Please visit: www.footprint-trust.co.uk or call 01983 822282 for details. Island Plan Consultation. I’m advised that the consultation for the amended Island Plan (The planning bible for new developments) will commence from 30 November for eight weeks. Please visit: www. iow.gov.uk/consultations/ for details.

The IW Council suggests the railings are ornamental and serves minimal health and safety purpose given these are elevated higher than the pavement and road! Although discussions have taken place with our local councils (who concur the cost is high when compared to community gain). For this reason other options are being considered.

Seafront Cycling. Thank you to the residents who contacted me regarding seafront cycling.

These include: · replacing the metal rails (Cost- Approx. £150,000)

That said, some residents supporting cycling acknowledged anti-social cyclists travelling at speed on the pavement. Adversely, many opposed to cycling felt that it was appropriate that families with children should be permitted providing this was done sensibly and by pedestrians being given priority.

·

using polyurethane posts and chains (Cost- Approx. £88,000)

·

removing railings. (Costs- Approx. £50,000)

Another option is seeking sponsors to fund replacements, or even introducing parking charges on the seafront specifically to fund the 12

Following feedback received to date, 7 residents supported restricting cyclists from using the pavement, whilst 3 residents felt cycling on the pavement should be allowed.

This will be discussed at Gurnard Parish Council’s meeting being held on Wednesday 12th December. Winter Gritting Routes. Now winter is fast approaching, I can confirm

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued the winter gritting route for our area is: Baring Road, Crossfield Avenue, Park Road, Ward Avenue in Cowes West, and Shore Road, Tuttons Hill, Worsley Road and Woodvale Road in Gurnard. Details can be found at: www.islandroads.com/27-winter-service.html In the meantime, I have requested that culverts are cleared of leaves to ensure water can flow freely beneath certain roads preventing the onset of black ice. Beach Huts. Following feedback from stakeholders, the IW Council are proposing to increase Beach Hut fees over five years, rather than three. After the initial new 10 year lease expires beach hut leases can be in joint/ multiple names, either by more than one member of the same family, or for two or more families. In addition, I’m advised there will be an ability to sublet huts, so long as this is not as part of a commercial operation. From my perspective when feedback was sought in May, I suggested that owners with a local address should receive a discount, whilst off-Island residents pay a premium rate lease, as is the case in some other areas. This was suggested to offset any financial loss the Council would accrue. Bucklers View Expansion? Southern Housing has asked to meet to discuss proposals to increase dwellings at Bucklers View by 12. Meetings are also taking place this month with residents to ascertain their views, as how best to proceed. It is anticipated that once proposals are agreed a planning application will follow early 2019.

Parking. With Christmas approaching and yuletide events taking place, please, please, please can I ask residents to be considerate when parking. In the last few months pressure has been put to request additional parking restrictions and increased enforcement- particularly in Worsley Road. If you are parking can I please appeal that motorists park hard against the pavement allowing both the bus and heavy goods vehicles to pass freely! Traffic Incidents, Place Road. I met on site with Island Roads, residents and Cllr Nicholson following a second traffic collision occurring in Place Road opposite the junction to the new Meadow View development. It is hoped there will be no further incidents following residents finding an alternative parking arrangement.

Style in the comfort of your own home. Fully qualified. Over 25 years experience in all areas of hairdressing. For all enquiries please call 01983 539975 or 07773 571187

It’s that time of year again, The Salvation Army in Newport will be holding their Christmas Day dinner. As always they will be providing a free hot meal and a pudding, to all their friends in the Community who may be homeless, elderly, or anyone who will be on their own and families who wish to join them.

Organiser Kay is asking for your help - Please see below a list of the kind of things they need. Last year they served 144 dinners on Christmas Day. Alongside this they also provided 140 families with hampers. Volunteers - They will need volunteers to assist in the preparation of the vegetables on Christmas Eve. This usually takes a couple of hours with a good team of people. They will need people on Christmas Day to help get the room ready for the guests arrival (time to be confirmed). People to help serve guests during the meal and to chat and share fellowship. You may be the only person that has spoken to some of the elderly folk that come in a while. Finally help is needed to clear away. They will also need guests collected from their homes. Could anyone help collect and return guests at the end of the day? Entertainment - They would love to entertain their guests. Food - Carrots, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, turkey, peas, Christmas pudding, cream, custard, mince pies, milk, tea, coffee and Christmas cake. Merry Christmas From Peter of Cowes Taxi As we near the end of another successful year with Cowes Taxis I would like to give you an insight into your local service. Established in 2006 by John and Julia Gange, they ran the business alongside their coach business. In June 2015 I acquired the business and worked solely for eight months, increasing local clientele, until I felt another driver was required. We now have five drivers who work various shifts, and we try to run a booked service between the hours 0600 and 2330 (later on Friday and Saturday).

SOS Flat Roofing

It has been an emotional year losing three of our regular customers - missed by myself and all the drivers. Competition with other taxi firms is fierce but we are more than coping. One bugbear is that companies are advertising on Google as Cowes Taxis which can be confusing for us all, but remember our official website is www.cowestaxis.com and our number is 01983 294444 and our email is info@cowestaxi.com All that is left now is to thank all of our loyal customers (you know who you are) and wish everybody a merry time over the festive period. Please don’t drink and drive, just give us a call. Janice Clark DipCFHP, MPSPract
