The Easy Things in Life Are you partial to a bit of yule log over the festive season but just don’t have the time to make it from scratch and at the same time you know some of the shop brought ones just don’t have that homemade feel? Well yule love this idea... All you need is a shop brought chocolate swiss roll of any size, ready made chocolate frosting, spoon full of icing sugar and some decorations. Simply cut a small end on the diagonal off the swiss roll and position on the side and sandwich together with a small amount of frosting. Cover the remaining swiss roll with the frosting and using a fork along the length to give a log like effect. Sieve some icing sugar over the top for a snowy feel and decorate as you wish with either marzipan or plastic decorations. It’s ok to cheat at Christmas... it’s called good time management.

Do you want to make some changes in your life? Not sure where to start? Work with me, Maggie Currie, Professional Transformational Coach. Learn how to live life like YOU and not how you think other people want you to be. This will bring you more freedom, more fun and less stress. What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox LIGHT UP A LIFE: Thursday 5th December. 6.30pm Birmingham Rd Methodist Hall. Proceeds to Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Come and have a sing, listen to a fabulous saxophonist, enjoy a cup of tea and a warm mince pie - and nearly forgot, come and see some fab decorated Christmas trees! VERMIN - RODENTS: There seems to be a huge spike in reported numbers of both small and large vermin. Particularly along Mill Hill/Belle Vue. As we know if you see one, it means there are another 12...Gardens and houses are becoming over run. A lot of this is due to overgrown gardens; feeding wildlife, hoarding in areas. I urge you all to be even more careful with food waste, and be mindful that some people are UTTERLY petrified beyond imagine, so do all you can to resolve the causes. BECKFORD CENTRE: In the heart of Cowes sits a rather fabulous place! VERY good to meet up with like-minded people; get out of home, help some good causes. Waiting with a nice hot drink and lush cakes and a very BIG welcome, please pop in. I thank them for their super hospitality, and EXCELLENT exhibition. OUR ISLANDS PAST - every Monday 10.00am-12noon. ART FOR ALL Monday and Thursday 1.304pm CRAFTY COWES Tuesday 10-12noon STITCHCRAFT Tuesdays 2-4pm 6

DISCUSSION Thursday 10-12 ranging from staff pay at BBC and charities, foreign aid budget, royal travel, driverless cars... ohhhh errr!!! SCAMS: I receive daily emails from sky to amazon to paypal. Most are very convincing... If it does not appear right, DO NOT REPLY. Check with your operator direct with numbers you already have for them. CHRISTMAS TOMBOLA & COFFEE MORNING: Friends of Northwood Cemetery 10-1pm Friday 6th December. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY: 7th December. All I.W. LONG stay car parks FREE 12noon till 8am. Again, please support the fabulous shops in our town. POLICE: I have heard many say ‘ no good calling police, you wait ages for them to answer or come out’. WELL...try this link for a VERY quick response! https://www.hampshire.police.uk/ro/ report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/ HEDGES: I know I keep on, but this is a good time to trim that hedge down, or back - especially at pivotal junctions or hidden bends. ELECTRIC POWER CUT: Fortunately we do not have these often anymore. However, I was without power for over 11 hours last week. The VITAL importance of having a torch or candles at hand is a must. Even more so, if you continued over the page

have an elderly relative who only has a portable phone IT DOES NOT WORK DURING A POWER CUT. You NEED to put in a hard wired phone for such emergencies. Fortunately I have always had one hard wired phone in house; so was able to keep neighbours up to date with what was going on. Having a battery pack for mobile was also very needed. It was a long 11 hours, and frozen food only just made it!!

Abuse has Evolved You don’t need a bruise to be abused. You don’t have to hit to hurt. Abuse is no longer just physical! Just because a person doesn’t put their hands on you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t abusive. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words.

It doesn’t just happen to women. Men can be victims too. Break the Cycle CIC has been running since 2016 and was founded by Maggie Currie after she realised there was a gap in the support needed by people who had suffered domestic abuse. She has worked tirelessly to obtain grant funding and donations to run the FREE Mind the Gap courses which are aimed at anyone who has suffered abuse in any form. Their regular 12 week courses are attended by local men and women and they can learn how to rebuild their It is NOT okay confidence and move forward positively in their lives on their • To be humiliated in public own terms. The sessions help • For you to be forced to do something you do build support networks, learn not agree with new skills and increase • To be told you are ugly or unattractive self-belief.

• To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.

These FREE to attend courses have produced amazing results by those attending. They have changed the thinking of some people in such a way as they have made the decision not to commit suicide. Others have discovered they are valuable members of society after continuously being told how worthless they were and some have gone on to start their own businesses, gone back into education or, just as importantly, escaped from their abusive relationship and now live confidently on their own terms.

The next courses begin in January 2020. The women only course begins on Tuesday 7th January at 10am and the men only course begins on Thursday 9th January at 6pm. Both courses are run at The Riverside Centre, The Quay, Newport. For more information or to book your place call 01983 754666 or email hello@breakthecycle. org.uk 8

One Great Island of People, Living in Many Communities Caring and Creative, Inclusive and Dynamic Striving to achieve equality of opportunity in all things and living life to the full

INSPIRATIONAL FUTURES

Our Island is steeped in history, has a workforce and community spirit to be proud of and its location inspires innovation and creativity I Believe that Island people deserve to be listened to and have their issues and concerns strongly represented at the highest levels of Government. By putting Island People First and at the centre of democracy. I will be voting for what best fits the needs of our Island People, in a way that is transparent, inclusive and community focused.

Our Health and Well-Being comes first

above all else and we must support our local NHS, and health workers in finding new ways in addressing the shortfalls of staff and funding. We must invest if we are all to live a good and long life. I will continue to fight for better funding with improved Health and Mental Healthy Services.

I Will Inspire Island Residents, encourage community development, raise peoples spirits and help improve our Island’s Profile. Our people are innovative and creative. I will seek to promote all that is good about our Island. The World We Live In Is The Source Of All That We Are And Hope To Be.

The Isle of Wight and United Kingdom is well placed with its innovation technologies and can make a significant contribution in supporting the reductions of pollutants. There are financial and employment rewards for our businesses in creating environmental innovations. Our Island is in a great position to test new technologies and green innovations. We must take climate change seriously.

ple when peo s en p p ha ly on , Change te, are engaged get involved, voer to demand it. and join togeth I would want to see a small Island visitor tax introduced to fund Cross-Solent Patient Transport and environmental projects. We need to assertively address safety concerns, have more police on the streets and respond quicker to criminal activity. Restorative justice needs to reflect the wishes of victims better. Environmental Health requires improved enforcement powers. Our Cross-Solent ferry operators need a centralised, co-ordinated out of town vehicle check-in. We cannot block Yarmouth, Fishbourne or East Cowes highways. We need to raise education attainment standards across the board, in Schools Higher Education and within existing workforce populations. This requires diversity of learning. We do need a fixed link feasibility study. The outcome of which must be put to our Island people in a referendum. Our people will decide what kind of Island they choose to live on in the future. Our Island is well placed for green innovation and testing technologies. We cannot keep building houses without providing services, jobs or infrastructure.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Planning. • Bucklers View - Discussions are ongoing regarding proposals to extend Bucklers View. Myself, neighbours and Gurnard Parish Council felt that although the size, scale and dominance had been downscaled, this had not gone far enough to reduce its visual impact at the gateway to the village of Gurnard. • Albert Road - Proposals to build four flats on the plot of a former bungalow is causing concern to residents. On this, Planning Officers are liaising with the applicants agent. I have requested both these applications are considered by the IW Council’s Planning Committee. Cowes Traffic Order - Earlier than anticipated, new orders are in-situ at Baring Rd, Woodvale Rd and Crossfield Avenue.

Items discussed included police resources, traffic enforcement, non-visible policing and how technology supports the constabulary. One issue raised was the importance of online reporting of offences to the police. For details, please visit: www.hampshire. police.uk New volunteers are needed for Community Speedwatch to train and assist monitoring speeding traffic. Please contact Cllr. Lora Peacey Wilcox for details at 01983 645765 or email lora08@ sky.com Winter Gritting Routes - At the time of writing this report the Isle of Wight Council has responded to feedback on gritting routes and decided not to make any changes this winter. With imminent works at St Mary’s Roundabout the road from Pallance Road to Shalfleet and Whitehouse Road will now be gritted due to the uplift of vehicles using this route to and from Newport.

Whilst recognising restrictions can frustrate some parents dropping off and collecting children, the reason for their need was to improve the safety of children following traffic incidents outside Details can be found at: http://www. the school. islandroads.com/27-winter-service-.html In response to free up parking space I Floodlighting, Cowes Enterprise have again requested that contractors College - I have put two households working at Gurnard Primary School and in touch with Cowes Enterprise College The Dottens to adhere in full to the concerned about the floodlighting respective Construction Management spillage onto properties in Ward Avenue Plans. and Baring Road. I am hopeful with the Police Meeting - With other Councillors, intervention of floodlighting specialists that disturbance will be restricted. I attended a meeting with the police. 14
