Thank you for picking up a copy of ‘Your Local Community Magazine’ and welcome to the February issue. Without wishing my life away, I am always pleased to see the back of January - it’s always a bit of a dreary month and seems to go on forever!!! At the time of writing this there is a warning that a cold spell is heading our way so remember to keep warm and take care of yourself when you are out and about. If you have older relatives or neighbours please always take the time to pop in and check they are ok and to see if they need anything. This issue is packed with news and information and if you are looking to keep your brain active and alert I can recommend trying the puzzles on page 6. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 12 and 13 will keep you informed of events happening locally and across the Island throughout February. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

MY THANKS to those of you that came up with ideas to help the situation regarding business permits.

Watching you, Watching him... It appears that something has caught the eye of this magnificent kestrel on the front cover and luckily it caught the eye of local photographer Neal Staley who was able to capture this amazing shot. This remarkable bird of prey was spotted from the bird and squirrel hide at Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve and is just one of the many species of nature that Neal comes across when he volunteers at the hide a couple of mornings each week. Neal has taken to photography as a means of therapy following a serious car crash in 2012, which then resulted in him being medically retired in 2015 from the RAF after 24 years of service. His life changed dramatically on many levels and he has now found comfort in the nature and wildlife that surrounds us. Neal is in the process of going live with his website but you can also see his work via Instagram and Flickr under the names Neal Staley Photography.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Gurnard School - Work has now commenced on the new Gurnard Primary School in Baring Road. Due to restricted onsite parking, this has meant less parking availablity close to the school. Following complaints please can I ask that children are dropped off and collected in a safe location away from the school. Please note that double (and triple!) parking is dangerous for little people crossing and the very last thing anybody wants to see is for a child being hurt by an impatient motorist. In the meantime, I’ve contacted the Planners to ensure the construction management plan is adhered to and parking is monitored, with action taken against offenders! Worsley Road - The Council still continues to receive complaints regarding bad parking in Worsley Road. As a result, high sided vehicles are not always able to pass. When parking (especially when using the shops and the village hall), where the road narrows, please avoid parking parallel to other vehicles, whilst it is ever helpful to park hard against the pavement. What I am trying to avoid when requesting your support on both these issues, is for more restrictions which only transfers the problem elsewhere. Cold Weather - With recent cold weather, I’ve received a request to ask residents older/ infirm residents to please avoid going out in cold and icy conditions. If you, or somebody you know needs support, please let me know so that I can ensure residents receive the support they need, deserve and are entitled! Island Planning Strategy - Consultation on the 10

new Isle of Wight Planning Bible continues until Monday 25th February. For details please visit: www.iow.

gov.uk/islandplanningstrategy

Within the Plan, of note to me is the IW Council are suggesting increasing the numbers of new homes being built from 525 per year to 641. I personally feel this is too many and consider there is insufficient evidence to increase existing numbers. In our ward, there are two potential housing allocation sites being suggested to fulfil housing targets, these connect the proposed development adjacent to Dottens Farm to properties on Baring Road north west of the junction with Tuttons Hill. It is envisaged that this ‘linear development’ will provide 25 new dwellings. In addition there are proposals for 20 dwellings on the Parklands site opposite Rashley’s in Park Road. As such, the Housing Allocations suggested are not planning applications, rather than sites identified that may (or may not) be developed during the 15 year lifetime of the new plan (2019/20 - 2033/4). Please let the Council know your views. At the same time, let me know if you feel my views are wrong! Land Clearance, Woodvale Road - Support was requested following clearance on a site off Woodvale Road where tree preservation orders exist. Following site meetings which took place, action has been taken to ensure that safeguards are in place to protect this site, its protected trees and wildlife habitats.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller Public Toilets - Before Christmas, I was gutwrenched to report a further incidence of vandalism which occurred to the newly refurbished baby changing facility and toilet in the Cut at Cowes. This mindless vandalism has meant that the cost of damage caused has fallen upon precept payers of Cowes. If you have any information on this, please contact the police on 101. I have asked that the stiffest financial penalties are imposed against those responsible.

Isle of Wight Budget Consultation - Residents are being asked to give their views on how the IW Council should spend its money next year. You can give your views by attending one of the public stakeholder meetings being planned and can respond to the budget paper presented to Cabinet in November 2018 via budget@iow.gov.uk. Alternatively, please take part in the online consultation at: https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6LTTQJK. Abandoned Vehicles - There remains a number of so-called abandoned vehicles which in recent months have been drawn to my attention. In all cases the registered owner has been notified. Please note when an owner is found, if the vehicle left is insured, the Council/ DVLA has limited powers

Councillor Vacancies: Gurnard Parish Council - Three vacancies have arisen for new Councillors on Gurnard Parish Council. For details please contact Katie Riley, interim clerk at: gurnardparishcouncil@gmail.com or call 01983 294606 or 07443 656480
