And that’s it. 2019 - done. Welcome to the January issue and Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a good Christmas and you managed to grab a little time to relax with family and friends. It’s not just a new year to celebrate but also a new decade. It’s been an amazing year for Island Magazines, we are continuing to grow and reach more islanders every month. I enjoy hearing the positive feedback from readers, advertisers and contributors. I am very lucky in that I can say, I do love my job and enjoy every minute of putting each issue together. Although January tends to be a little quieter our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section still has plenty to offer including regular community events. Take a look at pages 10 and 11 to find out what’s on. I hope you all have a great January and remember to keep warm and well as I’m sure there is cold weather on the way. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

I’m sure you will all agree with me that this month’s front cover is exceptional and this is all thanks to the wonderful and talented Darren Harris who is a wildlife enthusiast with a passion for birds of prey, who sits quietly observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. Darren has created an amazing portfolio of pictures which are now available to buy at Forest View Nursery in Newport. His photos show every tiny feature and detail of the subject and they come to life in front of your eyes which makes it very tempting to reach out and touch them. They make wonderful gifts for family, friends or just for yourself and every household should have a masterpiece like these adorning their walls.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Bucklers View - My request to call-in the decision to ‘approve’ proposals to extend Bucklers View to Planning Committee, in line with resident’s concerns over mass and over development was refused by the Planning Chairman. In light of this decision, I place on record my gratitude to residents and Gurnard Parish Council for their support. Egypt Light Update - Many thanks to all residents and organisations that have been in touch concerning information and interest in the light. This matter will be discussed by Cowes Town Council’s Project Committee. Following feedback it is my intention to set up of a small group of organisations and individuals, interested to oversee and safeguard the Light’s future. Whether the group becomes a Trust, or an Association is still to be agreed.

Social Isolation and Loneliness - With more people living alone, and that number growing please keep an eye out for your neighbours. If you know of any issue that causes concern, please let me know and I can take steps to ensure residents are supported! Register for Priority Services - In the meantime, Southern Water in partnership with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are rolling out a ‘Register for Priority Services’. This register ensures that vulnerable residents are taken care of during water and electricity outages.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Winter is Coming: Support from The Footprint Trust - The Footprint Trust offers free home visits to look for ways in which to reduce fuel and water costs. In some cases The Trust can provide new cookers, fridges and washing machines to those in greatest need. The Trust, and advice offered can save households £100’s. Please visit: http://www.footprint-trust. co.uk/projects.html or call 01983 822282 for free support. • Check you are on the best energy deal. • Ask about the Warm Home Discount • Go onto the Priority Service Register if you have a vulnerable person in your home. • Keep heating in your Living Space between 18C and 21C • Lag your water pipes. • Call 0800 027 0800 and ask about the Watersure Tariff if you have high water use due to a disability. • Make sure your torch is charged, and you have spare batteries. • Wrap up warm. Wear thick socks indoors. • Keep tinned and non-perishable goods in case extreme weather prevents you from shopping. • Make sure you have enough medicine; Don’t leave re-ordering to the last minute • Keep important phone numbers on your fridge. Sail GP to return to Cowes, 2020 Sail GP has announced that they will return to Cowes to host their event on 14-15th August next year. Following this announcement, I have asked for communication with local residents are made a priority.

I have forwarded all concerns regarding last year’s event to those officers who are directly involved with the organisers. I’ve been advised lessons were learnt, and an initial meeting will take place this month. Debt Advice - For support contact Citizens Advice: https://www. citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/ help-with-debt/ or call the Citizens Advice Bureau’s Advice line on 0300 330 1313. Alternatively, you can also contact the National Debt Line for support at: https:// www.nationaldebtline.org or by calling 0808 808 4000. Also This Month • At Full Council, I opposed the motion to limit Council Tax Support. At present (in line with Government guidance) those (esp. families) living on low incomes receive less support than others. This I believe is wholly unfair, and with the recent introduction of Universal Tax Credits unfairly taxes those less well off. • I have been chasing up concerns regarding the closure of Shore Road and subsequent road damage by contractors in Shore Road. • A school Governor is still being sought for Cowes Primary School. Within Gurnard School, I have made a nomination. • Congratulations to Pat Clayton, who has been reappointed to serve, as a Councillor on Gurnard Parish Council. Over the years, I have worked closely with Pat as a former Councillor, representative of Gurnard’s Neighbourhood Watch and as a resident of Westview Road who I have worked closely with residents over on planning applications and ‘prior approvals’. 7

Keep Warm and Keep Well This Winter The next couple of months the weather is likely to turn cold and this is the time to look after yourself, your family, elderly neighbours and friends. The cold weather can make some health problems worse and even lead to serious complications especially in those 65 or older, or anyone who has a long-term health condition. One of the biggest problems for many, especially those living on their own, is not staying warm enough in their homes. When temperatures fall below 8C, older adults can have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, flu, pneumonia, and in serious cases of low temperatures – hypothermia. Older adults can quickly lose body heat and aren’t always aware of their temperature, making it easy for them to become too cold, too quickly. Body temperature below 35C (normal temperature is 37C) can cause hypothermia. Hypothermia is particularly dangerous for those living alone as there’s not someone around to notice the signs.

Later signs of hypothermia: Early signs of hypothermia: • Slow or jerky movements including • Cold hands and feet • Puffy or swollen face trouble walking and clumsiness • Pale skin • Slow heartbeat • Slow or slurred speech • Slow, shallow breathing • Lethargic • Loss of consciousness • Anger or confusion If you notice signs of hypothermia, call 999 and seek immediate medical attention. Check on older neighbours and relatives, and those with heart or breathing (respiratory) problems, to make sure they: • are safe and well • are warm enough, especially at night • have stocks of food and medicines so they do not need to go out during very cold weather Here are a few tips to keep you and your family warm and well this winter:• keep your bedroom at 18C all night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed • use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to keep warm in bed – but do not use both at the same time • have at least 1 hot meal a day – eating regularly helps keep you warm • have hot drinks regularly • draw curtains at dusk and keep doors closed to block out draughts • get your heating system checked regularly by a qualified professional • wrap up warm and wear thick socks indoors.
