Welcome to the January issue of Island Magazines. I hope you all had a great Christmas and although you shouldn’t wish your life away, I know I am not alone in saying goodbye 2020 and hello 2021. I know the current Covid problems aren’t going to disappear just because it’s a new year, but I hope that 2021 is kinder to us and we can hopefully see some light at the end of the tunnel, with the possibility that life may just return back to normal...

This month’s issue is packed with news and information and we have some great advertisers offering a variety of services, and they will all be pleased to hear from you. Do you like this month’s front cover? When I first saw this photo, I just knew that this was going to be our front cover star. I mean how often can you get up this close to highland cattle. Find out more on page 4. The puzzle section on pages 12 and 13 will keep you busy and keep your brain active. I find January is usually one of the worst months of the years and seems to last for about 60+ days. I hope it stays dry so we can at least get out and about for some fresh air. Have you made any new resolutions this year? I haven’t bothered as I know I won’t stick to them. I think the first couple of months of each year are hard enough as it is. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Have your priorities changed recently? Are you considering changing direction in your work and/or personal life? Are your many thoughts overwhelming? Work with me to gather your scattered thoughts and pinpoint what it is you really want.
Lianne is a full-time mum and when she is not running around after her 4 children, 3 Labradors, a pug, a French bulldog, the cat and finally her 4 guinea pigs she can indulge in her passion of photography. She has lived in Wroxall for 6 years and loves nothing more than being in the countryside, she has previously had her own horses and for the past 2 years she has been training her puppy to become her first ever working dog.
Lianne originally started out taking photos with her camera phone and quickly became hooked and last year she upgraded to a Canon camera and hasn’t looked back. With all this countryside on her doorstep and knowing many of the local farmers, it’s no surprise that Lianne is a regular visitor to photograph the Highland Cattle and her photos are being shared across social media and websites. If you would like to see the great collection of photos Lianne has accumulated, you can follow her on Instagram @countrylife_and_labradors.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 45 Oxford Street, Northwood, PO31 8PT. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail. Pavement Parking - I have received countless enquiries concerning pavement parking and recently responded to a recent Government consultation concerning transferring enforcement powers to local Councils.
Planning and Housing - Following news of this Government’s Planning For The Future white paper, I continue to receive feedback over proposals to increase Island housing targets from 525 (5 years ago) to 1045 new dwellings per year.
Following this, at Full Council all Councillors unanimously voted in support of this.
Opposing these new figures, it was noted in 2019/20 261 dwellings were completed, with only 3 being ‘affordable’. To me, these new figures demonstrate they are neither Cowes Medical Centre - I continue to environment nor ‘need’ led, as I believe they offer support to Cowes Medical Centre concerning communications, and the roll out should be. First of all, the Friends of St Mary’s wish everyone a much better 2021. As 2021 begins, the Friends are getting used to their new retail set up, and they still live-in hope that at some time in the future they might serve drinks somewhere in the hospital and of course get their trolley service running again. In the meantime, they have been very busy serving mainly staff at St Mary’s who have been wonderfully supportive. They were delighted that the shop could remain open during the second lockdown and Lisa, the Manager continues at the helm, supported by her wonderful band of volunteers. The shop continues to provide a much-valued service to hospital staff and to the small number of the visitors to the Trust. They are receiving some lovely Facebook comments stating how much the shop is appreciated and for the service that they provide. Well done and thank you to Lisa and her team for all their work in keeping the shop going so well. Christmas seemed to start very early for the 2020 season and seeing the decorations up and Christmas merchandise about, was a real morale booster for them all. They were able to distribute over 370 gifts to patients who had found themselves in hospital for Christmas Day and for staff who were working hard looking after them. These were delivered just before the big day as they had to be ‘rested’ for 72 hours before being distributed. Moving forward the Friends of St Mary’s hope that in spring 2021 they can again start the process of helping the Trust to buy things which will make life little easier for both patients and staff. If you find yourself at St Mary’s soon please don’t forget to pop into the Friends’ shop - every purchase helps! 8

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox I think we all welcome 2021 to get back on our feet, and try to find a semblance of normality. I wish you all good health and prosperity for the coming year. CHICKENS: Do you have them at home? The Isle of Wight Council will be directly contacting owners with larger flocks, but the new rules apply to everybody, right across the Island, even if they only have a few birds. Anybody who keeps poultry, including chickens, ducks and geese, should check the Government website for updates and full information on the new rules. Updated information is available from GOV.UK: www.gov.uk/guidance/ avian-influenza-bird-flu Please can you let your neighbours know! DEBT: Don’t hide the bills. Get in touch with citizens’ advice. They can unravel and help. You will feel better when you do! Islehelp.me a super site for EVERY issue you are going through…Tel: 0800 144 8848 9-5 Mon-Fri. Or the online link 24hrs a day 7 days a week. HEDGES/FENCES: Again, please consider neighbours and pedestrians in keeping your hedges and fences clear for visual ease of walking and driving. Now is a good time to have a good cut back. It amazes me how much easier life would be if people took time to realise what an inconvenience some of the hedges are. (Equally I love to see birds nest!) BIN DAY: We have to be so grateful to our bin men for the superb job they have done during the whole pandemic to keep 10
the bins emptied. PLEASE can you ensure your bin is removed from obstructing pavement as soon as you can. I hear of bins being left out, causing dreadful problems for the partially sighted, and mums pushing prams not to mention disabled in mobility scooters. PLEASE THINK! Arctic Road residents please take note! BREXIT: As I write, we have no idea how this is going to affect us. We hear of shortages, price hikes etc. I have for many years advocated being as self sustaining in our own countries, as much as we can. I am hoping our, very clever, astute residents will think about how they can provide for us, not just locally but as a nation. PLEASE think as you complain about lack of medicines or ‘your favourite food item’… businesses will be doing all they can to help, but shortages and delays will be inevitable until we ‘find our feet’! THINK BEFORE YOU THROW AWAY: Daily I see people asking where to ‘give away clothes and other items’. Please ensure you give to local charity shops first. With Brexit items could become VERY useful. Likewise, if you have items of furniture, glasses, cutlery, clean bedding, curtains, etc contact the STOREROOM at Somerton Industrial Estate 01983 298679. DON’T automatically think of taking to the tip. continued over the page
What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox MAY ELECTIONS: Yes. Four years have flown by and we have local elections here on the Island. That means you will be choosing your local councillor for your town; and your local councillor to represent you at the IW Council. You can apply for a postal vote if you would prefer (I’ve done this for some years now, SO much easier!) Contact your local councillor or the Isle of Wight council for a form. Thursday May 6th is the date for your diary.

Then and Now Isn’t it great looking at old photographs of places on the Island and then comparing them to how they look now. Thanks to Adam Thompson who has happily shared some ‘Then and Now’ photos with us. Do you remember these two location in Cowes; The Duke of York and the Cowes Train Station. Adam has been sent many photos from local residents and he goes out to match the location, or in some cases when he can’t get to it, he uses the help of Google Maps. If you have any old photos feel free to email them to Adam at Tadam388@gmail.com and hopefully we can show you some more locations in future issues.
